Two Vycor glasses of different percentages of the components were liquated between 725 K and 950 K and leached in order to produce pores. Little intermolecular voids characterized by ortho-positronium lifetime valueτ$\text{}_{2}$≈1.5 ns were observed simultaneously. At the first stage of pore formation the intensity I$\text{}_{2}$ decreased considerably for both glasses, while at liquation temperatures higher than 825 K it increased again. The increase in I$\text{}_{2}$ resulted from changes in the properties of the bulk material. The growth ofτ$\text{}_{2}$ in this range of temperatures was also observed.

SBA-15-SO₃H supported tungstophosphoric acid (TPA, H₃PW₁₂O₄₀) mesoporous materials were synthesized by impregnation of TPA into the hydrothermally synthesized SBA-15-SO₃H and the catalytic performances were compared for the esterification reaction. The physical and chemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM/EDX, FT-IR and N₂ adsorption/desorption techniques. The characterization results show that TPA/SBA-15-SO₃H retained the typical mesoporous structure of SBA-15-SO₃H. The experimental results indicated that TPA/SBA-15-SO₃H is a more efficient catalyst than SBA-15-SO₃H for the esterification reaction. The higher activity of TPA/SBA-15-SO₃H compared with that of SBA-15-SO₃H was consistent with the material having the low pKa value, confirming that the esterification rate was mostly dependent on the acid strength of the additional functional groups of solid acid catalyst. Accordingly, the reason for the catalytic activity difference was simply explicated by the effect of TPA, having low pKa value, affecting the pore structure and the total acidity.

Opis:
Concrete is a material which is widely used for neutron shielding in such building constructions as nuclear power stations, particle accelerators and medical hospitals. Concrete is very significant for neutron shielding, because is contains some elements which help to moderate very penetrative fast neutrons. Boron increases the neutron shielding effectiveness of concretes. Boron can be added to concrete in different ways, by addition of boron to the water, used in concrete, or by addition of boron containing natural minerals. In this study, three samples of concrete were produced using B₂O₃ additives material, boron-modified active belite and Portland cement. Neutron absorption coefficients of the produced three different types of concrete samples were obtained through experiments. It is concluded that the addition of boron to concrete is an alternative option to be used for the purposes of neutron shielding.

Opis:
The limits of application of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and low temperature gas sorption for studying nanoporosity of polymer sorbents and membrane materials are discussed relying on the results previously obtained by the authors. For the two methods, limitations are determined by different factors: the dispersion of the material is essential for low temperature gas sorption, while concentration of nanopores of given size is important for positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The both methods came out to be a useful addition to each other in the studies of micropores and mesopores.

Opis:
The boron compounds have been widely used as additives in the production of cement and concrete to enhance their engineering properties. In this study, three series of concrete specimens were produced using B₂O₃ additive materials, boron modified active belite cement and Portland cement. After 28 days of curing period the specimens were exposed to temperatures of 250, 500 and 750°C. Mass loss and compressive strength were determined and recorded after the specimens were cooled to room temperature. It was concluded that the effect of the boron becomes more apparent at high temperatures.

For the adequate shielding of the radiological equipment using X and gamma rays, special materials with high attenuation properties are needed. This objective may be achieved by the use of concrete. Concrete engineers and technologists must take the role of aggregates more seriously, since there are increasing demands of modern concrete mixtures in terms of technological properties and greater economy. Heavyweight concrete contains aggregates that are natural or synthetic. In this study, metal industry waste products such as iron filings and rebar pieces were used to produce heavy concrete. Physical, mechanical and radiation shielding properties of the obtained concrete with barite, aggregates and artificial aggregates were studied. According to test results, the concrete produced with artificial aggregates can provide the desired physical properties. Radiation shielding coefficient was found to be proportional to the density of concrete.

Opis:
The temperature dependence of o-Ps lifetime in the pores calculated from extended Tao-Eldrup model was compared to the experimental data, collected for a set of silica gels synthesized using the polymer template technique. For the sample with average pore radii 2.0 nm rather good agreement between the model and experiment was found. For the sample with narrow pores (near 1.0 nm) the lifetime spectrum was complex. Except the range of highest temperatures the lifetimes are far from model calculations.

Aqueous solution of meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphine was deposited on electrochemically etched n-Si wafers. The morphology of the hybrid systems was investigated by scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope techniques. The optical response of the hybrid systems was studied by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the range of 1-5 eV. Particular features in adsorption process were revealed for meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphine deposited on variously chemically treated Si substrates. It was found that porphyrin J-aggregates can be intercalated into large pores formed in a bulk n-Si as well as into nanopores of luminescent oxide layer.

Opis:
$Sr_3WO_6:Eu^{3+}$ phosphor was prepared at high temperature by solid state method. The phase structure of phosphor was characterized as double perovskite structure. The cell parameters of $Sr_3WO_6:Eu^{3+}$ were determined as a = 8.361 Å, b = 8.288 Å, c = 8.211 Å, α = β = γ = 89.78°. The luminescence properties were studied. The results revealed that $Eu^{3+}$ ions show red emission about 616 nm.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) exhibits excellent biocompatibility but the low mechanical strength of normal HAp ceramics generally restricts its use to low load-bearing applications. Magnesium is an attractive material for use in biodegradable implants due to its low density, non-toxicity and mechanical properties similar to those of human tissue such as bone. Its biocompatibility makes it amenable for use in a wide range of applications from bone to cardiovascular implants. The aim of this work was to produce hydroxyapatite powder with chemical precipitation method and supplement Mg and investigate the effect of magnesium on structure of HAp powders. The Mg content ranged between 1 and 2 mol.%. The Mg+HAp powders were examined for morphology. The scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the specimen powders.

Opis:
Diode-like samples, containing porous silicon structures, were investigated by microwave radiation pulses. The resistance of the samples and electromotive force arising over the samples placed in a section of waveguide was measured. Reduction of resistance of the samples was observed with increase in microwave power. More complicated shape of the electromotive force dependence on pulse power was found. It is shown that both effects could be explained by models based on a concept of carrier heating by microwave radiation.

Smithsonite, ZnCO₃, from Zamantı-Kayseri, Turkey, was subjected to high-energy milling. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to study amorphisation in the structure and the alterations of bands in the structure were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Characterization of milled smithsonite by X-ray diffraction analysis has shown that disappearance, decrease and/or shifting of the patterns occurred with mechanical activation, which means that amorphisation was taking place. Amorphisation was also demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, where shifting of band centers was observed.

In this work, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was used for the structural characterisation of porous materials prepared from amorphous zeolite precursors acting as the starting materials and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide acting as a mesoporous template. The best fits of the obtained lifetime spectra provide a four-component exponential decomposition. The lifetime values of the long-lived components point to the presence of mesoporous voids. Infrared and X-ray analyses show that the obtained materials consist partly of a crystalline zeolite structure.

Malachite, a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with the formula $Cu_2CO_3(OH)_2$ was mechanically activated for different durations in a planetary mill and analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and particle size analysis to investigate the structural alterations in malachite structure. The results showed that decrease in intensity of the X-ray diffraction peaks and some alterations in carbonate and hydroxyl units of malachite occurred with increase in mechanical activation duration.

This work presents porous silicon technology, adapted to improve the characteristics of monocrystalline silicon solar cell. This is achieved by taking advantage of properties provided by porous silicon technology in production of diverse structures in the material. We produce a porous silicon derivative, which is mostly hidden in the emitter of solar cell. Research of the initial and modified solar cells was made by measuring current-voltage characteristics under illumination of a 5000 K xenon lamp. Spectrally resolved studies of current-voltage characteristics were carried out using radiation of halogen lamps and diffraction grating monochromator. Studies revealed that the manufacturing of buried porous silicon structure improves solar cell performance by increasing the fill factor of the modified solar cell current-voltage characteristics, maximum output power and efficiency, when compared to unmodified ones. Spectral studies revealed that the above-mentioned improvement differs for various sections of light spectrum. Largest relative enhancement of solar cell current was observed at the wavelengths of Δ λ = 450-550 nm. We consider the cumulative result of several effects resulting in solar cell efficiency enhancement. Most of them were the influence of porosity on effective optical path length and better anti-reflecting properties of multiple porous structures.
