    This article examines the role played by the sea in the policy of the tyrants of Pherae. Although it has often been emphasised that control over the port in Pagasae and the profits from the maritime trade were closely linked to the city’s increasing importance in the late 5th and first half of the 4th century, these issues are yet to be the subject of a more detailed analysis. This article is the first part of a comprehensive study on the maritime activity of the Pheraean tyrants in the period from Jason’s first documented political move to the end of the reigns of Lycophron and Peitholaus. It focuses on political moves, and especially on relations with Athens, as the largest maritime power of the period. One of the most important instruments of maritime policy was maintaining a fleet. The article considers the circumstances of its building, its size and its use.

    Opis:
    Julian (Flavius Claudius Iulianus), called the Apostate, Roman emperor in the years 361–363, was one of the most intriguing rulers. From antiquity to the present day he invariably aroused great interest, both during his life and after his death. He was a just emperor, a wise commander, and a very talented writer. On 26 June 363 Julian the Apostate was mortally wounded during a battle with the Persians. He spent the last moments of his life discussing with philosophers Priskus and Maksimus the nobility of the soul, as we learn from the historian Ammianus Marcellinus. The ruler then showed, perhaps too ostentatiously, his greatest passion: love of virtue and fame. Julian the Apostate died at the age of thirty-two after only twenty months of his rule. Julian’s body, as Gregory of Nazianzus recalls, was transported from Nisibis to Tarsus in Cilicia, which took fifteen days. The subjects greeted the arrival of the body with a mournful lament or contemptuous insults, as the Father of the Church adds. Julian wanted to rest after death in Tarsus, in a mausoleum next to a small temple on the banks of the Cydnus River. Then, at an unspecified time, as the chronicler Zonaras recalls, the body of Emperor Julian the Apostate was transferred to Constantinople and buried in the Church of the Holy Apostles. Constantine Porphyrogenitus in his collection On the ceremonies of the imperial court (book II, chapter 42) mentions the grave of Julian. Today one of the porphyry sarcophagi, kept in the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul, is sometimes considered the Julian sarcophagus. The theme of this article is an attempt to determine the posthumous fate of Emperor Julian the Apostate’s body, i.e. when and in what circumstances it was transferred to Constantinople.

    The aim of the presented paper is to analize the terminology describing humility and pride that appears in the writings of the Greek Fathers of the Church of the 4th century (Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, John Chrysostom). To describe a humility they used the traditional terms that derived from ancient philosophy and were also well known in the Septuagint and in the New Testament writings; and used in the letters by Saint Paul and Saint Peter. The ancient Greek thought didn’t know a virtue of humility, so the philosophers didn’t use the last of these terms. However, the first two were used in the ancient Greek literature, but usually in a pejorative sense and meant „smallness”, „weakness”, „misery”. In the works of Greek Fathers of the Church the adjective and the substantive had a wider semantic field than the substantive „virtue of humility”. They could have meant the virtue of humility, as well as a natural state of abasement of man as a created being; or a humiliation caused by the sin, and even all lowliness in the world of spirit and matter. The terms associated with the pride, used by the Greek Fathers of the Church, remained unchanged since the time of ancient Greek philosophy and literature, which devoted to this fault not less space than later Christianity.

    W artykule tym zaprezentowane zostały wybrane uwagi na temat późnoantycznej społeczności chrześcijan Kościoła Afryki rzymskiej w relacji św. Augustyna. Odwołując się do dzieł biskupa Hippony, mogliśmy zanalizować pewien wycinek obrazu społeczeństwa rzymskiego w prowincji afrykańskiej dotyczący kwestii stosunków religijnych w ówczesnych strukturach kościelnych. Nie jest to obraz pełny, zajęliśmy się w tym miejscu tylko wybranymi zagadnieniami, ponieważ kolekcja źródeł Augustyna jest nader bogata i mimo wielości opracowań na ten temat, wciąż można odkrywać nowe zagadnienia czy problemy, bądź też analizować opracowane już na nowy sposób. W powyższym artykule zajęliśmy się kwestiami związanymi z duchowieństwem afrykańskim, przebiegiem liturgii, ogólnie pojętym laikatem i jego służbą kościelną oraz stosunkami religijnymi, zawężonymi do zagadnień herezji i schizm. Sam temat podjęty przez nas w artykule wymaga dalszych badań, jednak przedstawione powyżej wnioski pozwalają stwierdzić, że mimo problemów z gospodarką w III wieku, kryzysami, uzurpacjami, a nade wszystko z herezjami, schizmami i koniunkturalnymi nawróceniami, Kościół afrykański w czasach św. Augustyna rozwijał się dobrze, a próby walki z problemami podejmował charyzmatyczny biskup Hippony, wspierany przez hierarchię kościelną. 
    This article presents selected remarks that St Augustine made on the late-classical Christian community of the Church in Roman. Looking at the writings of the bishop of Hippo we can analyse a certain section of Roman society in the African province, especially the question of the confessional relations in the Church structures of those days. However, this is not a complete image and we are able to deal only with some selected topics here. This is due to the fact that the collection of the Augustine sources is very complex and despite the numerous studies on this subject, new doubts and questions still arise. The paper contains a study of the African clergy, the liturgical rite, the laity in general and its ecclesiastical functions as well as the religious tensions caused by heresies and schisms. Undoubtedly the subject itself requires further research, yet the conclusions presented in the article allow us to say that despite the economic problems in the third century, the crises, the usurpations of power and, above all, the heresies, the schisms and the opportunistic conversions, the African Church in the time of St. Augustine was developing well. The charismatic bishop of Hippo was doing his best to tackle all these difficulties with the support of his clergy.

    W artykule zajęliśmy się przyczynami wędrówek późnoantycznego duchowieństwa (IV, V w.), które pojawiały się w kościelnych tekstach normatywnych ustalanych na zgromadzeniach biskupich Cesarstwa Rzymskiego. Poruszyliśmy kwestie powodów wędrówek osób duchownych podzielone na te zgodne z prawem kanonicznym i wszelkie inne wynikające z powodów czy to ambicjonalnych, prestiżowych, niezgadzania się na ekskomuniki, czy to różnych skandali. Kanony ustalane przez synody i sobory były naszym głównym źródłem. Kolekcja tekstów normatywnych jest bogata i można na jej podstawie odtwarzać fragmenty obrazu dyscypliny duchowieństwa (i wielu problemów nękających ówczesnych chrześcijan) w interesującej nas epoce. Temat wędrówek potrzebuje dalszych badań, zwłaszcza w analizie innych późnoantycznych źródeł.
    The paper addresses the reasons why the late-antique clergy (4th – 5th century) moved from place to place in the light of ecclesiastical normative texts promulgated at episcopal assemblies of the Roman Empire. At times this mobility had its reasons in the canon law and sometimes in either personal ambition, prestige, disagreement with excommunication, or in various scandals. Canons established by synods and councils were our main source. The collections of normative texts are abundant and from this it is possible to reconstruct the parts of a wider picture of clerical disciplinary issues and of the many problems besetting Christians at that time. The question of clerical mobility needs further research, especially in the analysis of other late antique sources.

    Kwestiom tolerancji i nietolerancji religijnej chrześcijaństwa w IV wieku po Chr. należy się nowe odczytaniem przede wszystkim z ujęciem nowych wyników badań historyczno-kulturowych i literaturoznawczych. W artykule został poddany ocenie dyskurs religijny zwłaszcza Firmicusa Maternusa oraz ocena pisarstwa i działalności św. Filastra przez potomnych. Obaj twórcy byli oryginalnymi pisarzami w środowisku chrześcijańskim IV wieku. Pierwszy zamiast wchodzić w spory teologiczne, które zdominowały literaturę chrześcijańską tego okresu,  nie waha się wyrazić zdecydowanych poglądów wobec krwawych obrzędów różnych kultów, postrzeganych przezeń jako duże zagrożenie osobiste, społeczne i państwowe. Drugi w opisie różnic rozumienia chrześcijaństwa widzi nie tylko zło, ale zaburzenia świadomości. Obaj przez potomnych zostaną ocenieni jako ci, którzy dostrzegli, iż ludzie poszukujący w zakresie religii, nie zawsze świadomie dążą do zła, ale mogą błądzić i ulegać złudzeniom (παρερμηνεῖαι, hallucinationes, errores).
    The issues of religious tolerance and intolerance of Christianity in the fourth century AD deserve a rereading with the inclusion of new results of historical, cultural and literary studies. The article will evaluate the religious discourse of Firmicus Maternus and the assessment of the writings and activity of Saint Filaster by the descendants. Both writers were original writers in the Christian environment of the 4th century. The first one, instead of entering into theological disputes that dominated Christian literature of this period, does not hesitate to express his firm views on the bloody rites of various cults perceived by him as a great personal, social and state threat. The second one, in the description of differences in understanding of Christianity, sees not only evil but disturbances of consciousness. Both will be judged by the descendants as those who have seen that people who seek in the field of religion do not always deliberately seek evil but they may err and succumb to illusions.

    The analysis of the cultural and settlement situation in the Upper San River basin in the Late Roman Period and the early phase of the Migration Period (timespan between phases C2 and D) is difficult due to the small database. In addition to materials from the partially researched settlement in Lesko and recently excavated (during the investment works on the bypass of Sanok) settlement in Sanok 59-60, the materials from these phases are primarily stray finds, such as metal fragments of clothing, such as buckles or coins, discovered outside the archaeological context. It is important to underline that most of the wheel-made pottery finds have a wide chronological frame and it is a rare possibility to narrow pottery dating. Despite the limited amount of data, they provide the basis for the new analysis of the archaeological material and settlement situation in this area dated roughly to the Late Roman Period and Early Migration Period. In this context, wide-scale research, which for the first time allowed observation of the extent and organization of settlements, proved to be particularly important.

    The process of assuming Christianity by those Germanic tribes that entered the western part of the Roman Empire began in the second half of the second century and lasted until the ninth. Their conversion to Christianity occurred in two stages. First, those peoples followed the Aryan kind of Christianity and later the Catholic one. The early missionaries to Germanic peoples were Christians who had been captured in Asia Minor. However, the most important Germanic mission emerged from the Germanic peoples themselves, i.e. from the Visigoths, who instilled Aryanism into their kinsfolk. During the fifth century, as Germanic tribes were settled within the Empire, they were romanized and eventually converted to Roman Catholicism. The Franks were the first numerous Germanic tribe to be converted to Catholicism from their native tribal religion in 498. Since then they began “frankisation” and conversion to Catholicism of the tribes they captured. The Catholic Church, deeply attached to the idea of Romanitas, was not interested in the conversion of Germanic tribes to Catholicism any more. Only after Gregory the Great (540-604) was elected Pope, a Catholic Benedictine mission was established among the Anglo-Saxon tribes. Parallel to that a mission of Irish monks came into being. The formal conversion of the Germanic tribes who entered Imperium Romanum Pars Occident to Catholicism resulted from the monastic activity on the one hand and the Church-State model of evangelization on the other.

    Chociaż koncepcja niepoznawalności Boga zawsze była w Kościele obecna, to w pierwszych wiekach bardziej istotne było ukazanie Boga bliskiego dzięki łasce i wcieleniu. W IV w. wyraźnie widać zmianę w akcentach i roli przyznawanej niepoznawalności Boga przez Ojców. Nie wzięło się to znikąd, ale było ściśle powiązane z kontrowersją eunomiańską, która jest nie tyle częścią polemiki ariańskiej, co osobnym rozdziałem w historii teologii. Wykazujemy w artykule, że podstawą różnic między Aecjuszem i Eunomiuszem z jednej strony a Ojcami Kapadockimi z drugiej były przyjęte przez nich filozoficzne założenia. Zarówno koncepcja osób boskich jak i zagadnienie poznawalności Boga wynikają z przekonania o pochodzeniu nazw: Eunomiusz wierzył, że nazwy zostały stworzone przez Boga, natomiast Ojcowie Kapadoccy utrzymywali, że to człowiek nadaje rzeczom nazwy. Różne założenia doprowadziły ich do różnych wniosków: Eunomiusz uważał, że nazwy oddają istotę rzeczy; Ojcowie, wręcz przeciwnie, byli przekonani, że człowiek nie jest w stanie poznać rzeczywistości, nawet siebie samego. Obie strony zastosowały swoje założenia do możliwości poznania Boga, co nieuchronnie doprowadziło do dwóch rozbieżnych koncepcji: Eunomiusz uznał istotę Boga za całkowicie poznawalną, ojcowie – za całkowicie niepoznawalną.

    In the translation of the Chronicon of Eusebius of Caesarea, St. Jerome firmly lists all the heretics and the heresies which – with the complicity of struggles for political power – affected Christianity, causing a sort of internal „martyrdom” for those defending faith. Donatists, Arianists, Macedonians, Anomoeans, Aetians, Audians, Photinians: none escapes the translation and judgement of the Great Dalmatian, who sometimes – impelled by the concise writing style of a chronicle – expresses his own judgement on heretics and their supporters with a single harsh qualification, failing to provide wider evaluations. The fights for the truth invested even the Synods of Rimini and Seleucia, but his concise and keen exposition of the events provides to the reader the information on the facts as well as on the political interference of many decisions, which were not prompted by religious motivations. Once again, an overview of the events presented in his Chronicon – through his „translation” and „tradition” – confirms how divisions and problems within the Church in the past centuries were caused by external motives, as well as often spoiled by the political events and took advantage of the frailty of the human nature, rather than aiming at seeking the truth.
    Kontynuując Chronicon Euzebiusza z Cezarei, wśród wielu innych postaci św. Hieronim wymienia także błędnowierców i odszczepieńców IV w. Wskazuje przy tym częstokroć na ich związki z walką polityczną i władzą świecką, która w owym czasie nękała prawowiernych chrześcijan, czyniąc z nich swoistych „męczenników”. Donatyści, arianie, macedonianie (duchobórcy), eunomianie, aecjanie, audianie, fotynianie nie uniknęli surowej oceny wielkiego Ojca Kościoła, który niekiedy – ograniczony swoistym, krótkim stylem samej Kroniki – nawet poprzez jeden jedyny przymiotnik wyraża całą swoją krytykę i dezaprobatę względem błędnowierców oraz tych, którzy ich wspierali i im schlebiali. Nieustanne walki o czystość wiary nie zawsze kończyły się zwycięstwem, jak to widać np. w postanowieniach synodów z Rimini i Seleucji. Niemniej jednak przekaz faktów, dokonany przez Hieronima, pozwala czytelnikowi poznać choćby w zarysie przebieg i cały niesprzyjający kontekst polityczny tych teologicznych sporów. Po raz kolejny lektura faktów i ich kontekstu historyczno-politycznego potwierdza, iż rozłamy i trudności wewnątrz Kościoła pierwszych wieków były spowodowane działaniami zewnętrznymi władz świeckich, wykorzystującymi ludzką słabość spragnioną raczej władzy niż prawdy.

    This article concerns the degree of direct involvement in the Athenian foreign policy in the 4th century BC. One of main questions debated by scholars is whether the Second Athenian Sea League was gradually evolving into an arche, to eventually resemble the league of the previous century. The following text contributes to the scholarly debate through a case study of relations between Athens and poleis on the island of Keos in 360s. Despite its small size, Keos included four settlements having the status of polis: Karthaia, Poiessa, Koresia and Ioulis, all members of the Second Athenian League. Around year 363/2 (according to the Attic calendar),anti-Athenian riots, usually described as revolts, erupted on Keos, to be quickly quelled by the strategos Chabrias. It is commonly assumed that the Athenians used the uprising to interfere directly in internal affairs on the island, enforcing the dissolution of the local federation of poleis. However, my analysis of selected sources suggests that such an interpretation cannot be readily defended: in fact, the federation on Keos could have broken up earlier, possibly without any external intervention. In result, it appears that the Athenians did not interfere in the local affairs to such a degree as it is often accepted.
