Opis:
The heat loss at ground contact structures is taken into consideration in building heat loss calculations. However, it implies uncertainties due to the physical properties of the soil as well as the building structure. In this paper, new methods are introduced for calculating the heat loss at ground contact structures. Firstly, it examines the presently used and general calculation methods and their shortcomings. Then a simple-to-use method based on thousands of results of parametrized transient finite element thermal models is shown. In this research, the calculations take the middle-eastern European climate conditions, geothermal gradient and soil properties as well as the relevant harmonized EU standards into account. The equivalent linear heat transfer coefficients, which in this method also contain the effects of thermal bridges, occurring in various conditions are summarized in a table and can be calculated by new formulae also shown in the paper using condition-dependent constants, the ground floor's heat transfer coefficient and the length between the floor and ground level.

Opis:
In this study, the possibility of enhancing heat insulation performance of hollow bricks by filling the cavities with perlite is investigated. A conjugate heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation in different hollow bricks are analyzed numerically to assess their thermal performance. Calculations are performed for three scenarios for each type of hollow brick: (i) cavities are filled with air, (ii) half of the cavities are filled with perlite while the other half is filled with air, (iii) all cavities are filled with perlite. The benefit of filling cavities with perlite is justified quantitatively for each investigated hollow brick type. It is concluded that the enhancement in insulation performance can be up to 15.6% and 27.5% for half-perlite and full-perlite cases, respectively, depending on the brick type.

Opis:
The rectification of the second law of thermodynamics is used to directly relate irreversible heat and work transfers to reversible processes. This permits the construction of thermodynamic functions of state that include entropy contributions due to irreversible processes. A general expression is set up to determine the entropy changes in terms of experimentally accessible parameters when a system is interacting with its surroundings via quasistatic irreversible operations. The procedure is used to determine the entropy changes across a narrow junction in terms of pressure and temperature differences between the system and its surroundings, including cyclic processes.

Opis:
In this paper we demonstrate a theoretical study for photothermal measurements on inhomogeneous coatings. First, a general photothermal mathematical model for thermal gradient materials is presented. Then, we discuss the effects of inhomogeneous thermal properties in photothermal amplitude and phase spectra of coatings. Finally, a method for quantitative depth profiling that makes use of prior knowledge about the type of profile existing in a sample to reduce the instabilities associated with the mathematically ill conditioned task is demonstrated.

Opis:
Although die casting is a near net shape manufacturing process, it mainly involves a thermal process. Therefore, in order to produce high quality parts, it is important to determine casting-mold interfacial heat transfer coefficient and heat flux. In this paper the effects of different injection parameters (second phase velocity, injection pressure, pouring and die temperature) on heat flux and interfacial heat transfer coefficient were investigated experimentally and numerically. Experiments were performed in cylindrical geometry using a cast aluminum alloy A360 against H13 steel mold. Selected injection parameters were 1.7-2.5 m/s for second phase velocity, 100-200 bar for third phase pressure, 983-1053 K for pouring temperature and 373, 433, 493, 553 K for the die temperature. These parameters were used for both non-vacuum and vacuum conditions in the cavity of the mold. The effects of the application under vacuum conditions were also studied. Temperatures were measured as functions of time, using 18 thermocouples, which were mounted at different depths of casting and mold material. Measured and calculated temperature values are found compatible. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient h and heat flux q depending on the experimentally measured temperature values were calculated with finite difference method using explicit technique in C# programming language. In addition to experiments, Flow-3D software simulations were performed using the same parameters. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient and heat flux results obtained from Flow-3D are also presented in the study. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient has decreased as a result of increasing of temperature of mold and pouring. In addition, interfacial heat transfer coefficient values have increased slightly with the increase of injection speed and pressure. It was observed that the values of interfacial heat transfer coefficient and heat flux have also increased when vacuum was applied inside the cavity of the mold. When all injection parameters are considered, it is seen that the interfacial heat transfer coefficient varies between 92-117 kW/m² K.

Opis:
A laser beam is used to heat a portion of liquid closed in a vessel from the top of it to avoid convection. The temperature is measured at the bottom of the vessel by a laser waveguide sensor. The heating and measuring methods allow using a small amount of liquid of the order of a milliliter fraction. The heat flow through the liquid as well as the surrounding vessel and space is modeled by the finite-element method to calculate the temperature at the bottom vs. time. Thus obtained dependence is used then as a fitting function to get the liquid thermal conductivity among some other fitting parameters.

Opis:
This paper presents an optimal boundary temperature control of thermal stresses in a plate, based on time-conformable fractional heat conduction equation. The aim is to find the boundary temperature that takes thermal stress under control. The fractional Laplace and finite Fourier sine transforms are used to obtain the fundamental solution. Then the optimal control is held by successive iterations. Numerical results are depicted by plots produced by MATLAB codes.

The interaction of single-pulse Nd:YAG laser, operating at 1064 nm wavelength and 6 ns pulse duration, with AISI 316L stainless steel target surface was investigated experimentally and theoretically. Surface modification of stainless steel using laser irradiation was studied by observing the effects of varying incident laser pulse intensities on surface morphology. Surface structure of laser treated stainless steel was determined by optical microscopy and profilometry analyses. Numerical calculation by heat transfer equation was performed for single laser pulse irradiation. The results, obtained by theoretical and experimental processes, of the interaction between single-pulse Nd:YAG laser irradiation and AISI 316L stainless steel target surface are reported.
