Opis:
The paper presents a comparison of central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) performance in sound synthesis based on physical modeling. The goal was to achieve real-time performance with two- and three-dimensional finite difference (FD) instrument models. Two abstract instruments, a membrane and a block, were modeled and tested using a CPU and a GPU in the OpenCL framework to find a threshold of real-time model size. Two different algorithms were compared. With a parallelized algorithm, a middle-class GPU outperformed a top-class CPU by factor of 2.5 in 2D and by factor of 7.5 in 3D model. Synchronization issues in parallel GPU calculations were discussed and addressed. The results show that GPUs can significantly speed up real-time musical instrument simulations, allowing for developing more complex and realistic models.

Opis:
Signal processing methods make possible such a mixing of signals that their overlapping in the time-frequency plane is reduced. This can be achieved by reducing the number of overlapping signals by discarding contributions from weaker signals and leaving only contributions from stronger ones. When applied to acoustic signals, this is referred to by the authors as selective mixing of sounds. Previous research has shown, that this rule, when applied to signals of musical instruments can provide some perceptual advantages over simple adding up the sound sources. In this paper, an experiment was carried out to determine the threshold of the value of relative energy of sound sources to control the decision about discarding a contribution from a particular sound source.

Opis:
The paper describes the method that enables to measure acoustic fidelity of audio signals degraded with digital watermarks. Fidelity measurements of degraded acoustic signals is suitable for such applications as distinguishing whether the acoustic record is signed with a digital watermark (watermarked) or not as well as evaluation of the degradation degree affecting the host signal. The test of subjective assessment according to the recommendation ITU BS.1116-1 is the standard that served as the basis for implementation of a dedicated application within the Matlab environment and for development of the concept how to make this application available as an IP network service to enable assessment of degraded signal by a wider auditorium.
