Opis:
Optical-temperature investigations of stationary and photo-induced absorption in undoped and Al (or Ga) doped Bi₁₂SiO₂₀ crystals are discussed. In the wave-number range 22000-4000 cm¯¹ under temperatures from 80 to 650 K, peculiarities of thermochromic effect have been revealed and temperature dependences of intensity of bands forming photo- and thermochromic effects have been found. A correlation between these dependences and spectra of thermostimulated current is explained.

Opis:
For the last three decades, the phenomenon of four-wave mixing is a significant technique for generation of light at new distinct wavelength. When two distinct laser beams (pump and probe) beat together in a non-linear medium, few modes are increased in the power at same distance from the probe and pump, as a result of four-wave mixing. In this paper, cascading structure of two semiconductor optical amplifiers produces very strong four-wave mixing. This technique is exploited to devise a tunable radio frequency signal generator. The wavelength distance between pump and probe laser beams determines the radio frequency of the generated signal. Using this scheme, it can be observed from the experimental results, that there is an increase of more than 3 dB in signal to noise ratio at 7 Gbits/sec data rate of the 60 GHz generated mm-wave signal. Moreover, the radio frequency can be tuned to hundreds of GHz by varying the distance between the pump and probe signals. This scheme will readily serve as future all optical radars. It is also a key technique for short-range communication systems for military applications. The above scheme can also be monolithically integrated.

Opis:
Millimeter wave (mm-wave) technology is significant for military needs and applications due to its numerous advantages, such as huge bandwidth, deploying small antenna and high radar resolution. Due to atmospheric influence, mm-wave is important in short-range applications such as fire control radar. Similarly for the next-generation communication and military applications, high-speed radio over fiber networks are very crucial. In this paper, a review of the generation and modulation of millimeter-wave signal optically using semiconductor ring laser (SRL) has been done. The phenomena of optical injection locking and four-wave mixing are exploited in SRL to generate radio frequency (RF) optical signals. The signals with huge data rate can be transferred directly from an intensity modulated optical signal onto a RF optical signal with RF frequency tunable in steps of the free spectrum range (FSR) of SRL. They can be converted with flexible RF modulation formats over the optical carrier.

Opis:
The Goos-Hänchen effect is an optical phenomenon defined as a displacement of the reflected beam of linearly polarized light after the total internal reflection, which occurs perpendicularly to the direction of propagation. Due to this effect, when an optical wave propagates through a barrier, tunneling times may change accordingly. In this paper, we consider the impact of the Goos-Hänchen effect on group delay and dwell time for electromagnetic wave propagating through a nonlinear dispersive slab placed inside linear dispersive surroundings. Numerical calculations are performed for the special case, namely a double negative index metamaterial embedded into a material with a saturable nonlinearity, when a background medium is vacuum. The numerical results for tunneling times are calculated when the Goos-Hänchen effect is observed. It is shown that this approach gives more accurate expressions for tunneling times when the angle of incidence has a non-zero value.

We present a detailed experimental investigation on polarization-isotropic and polarization-anisotropic holographic scattering in lithium niobate crystal doped with iron when recording parasitic gratings with an ordinary polarized pump beam. The kinetics of both types of scattering during the whole process of recording are studied. Holographic scattering is presented as a simple technique to monitor the energy transfer between beams of different polarization. Moreover, the spectral and the angular dependence of the transmitted intensity of the crystal during the reconstruction of the auto-generated parasitic gratings are measured.

We experimentally demonstrate a new electromagnetic one-recording-channel time-reversal mirror that can operate at high frequencies and high bandwidths. The experiments are carried out in a 1 m$\text{}^{3}$ ray-chaotic enclosure using two simple antennas. The input is a 7.0 GHz signal that is amplitude modulated with a 60 ns long pulse. The time-reversal focused signal has a peak-signal-to-noise ratio of about 9 dB, and is very sensitive to small perturbations to the ray-chaotic enclosure. The results are consistent with expectations for single-recording-channel time-reversal mirrors, and establish a new platform for study of fundamental issues in time-domain wave chaos, as well as novel applications.

In this paper we analyzed the following model: a thin slab with Kerr nonlinearity placed between two semi-infinite samples of linear and nonmagnetic materials. A general relation between the bidirectional group delay and the dwell time is derived for the thin slab. It is shown that the group delay is equal to the dwell time plus a self-interference delay. Particular attention is given to solving the Helmholtz equation for this case. Detailed and rigorous treatment revealed that the solutions of the Helmholtz equation are given via elliptic functions of the first kind. The boundary conditions at the interfaces are determined precisely. Finally, we provide an overall procedure for numerical calculation of the dwell times.

In this work we present results of calculations concerning bistability of optical polarisation in birefringent media. Second-order optical nonlinearity is assumed to be dominant and represented by one parameter. In our model the second-harmonic generation regime is assumed. Light transmission is analysed in terms of standard Fabry-Perot model of feedback. We derived formulas for the Stokes parameters describing the polarisation state. Numerical results showed that three parameters may exhibit bistable behaviour. This creates new possibilities for optical switching.

In this paper we analyse theoretically the transmission of two strong laser beams through a medium exhibiting optical nonlinearity of the second order combined with a linear anisotropy. A standard model of two wave mixing was applied and closed formulas for intensity and polarisation state were obtained. Numerical calculations show that outgoing beams are very sensitive to the state of incoming beams and to the material characteristics. Under some realistic conditions we were able to obtain bistability of both intensity and polarisation state. The results also show how to modulate the intensity and polarisation state of one wave by another one.

In the paper the efficiency of the light energy conversion from the fundamental wave into its second harmonics is analysed. A standard model of three waves mixing in media without centre of symmetry was applied. It was shown that the full conversion of energy is possible if an appropriate phase difference exists and provided that at least a minimal energy of the second wave is present on the input. The results are expressed both by analytical formulas and a phase space reconstruction. A simple experimental setup to enhance the second harmonics is proposed.

We present a model calculation of optical bistability and polarisation evolution in optically birefringent media based on the interaction of three waves. Second-order optical nonlinearity (described by the third rank susceptibility tensor) is assumed to be dominant. A bistable light transmission is analysed in terms of standard Fabry-Perot model of feedback, and is a direct consequence of the results obtained for a semi-infinite medium. A second effect considered in the paper is evolution of polarisation state of the waves involved in these processes. We derived a closed formula for intensity-dependent refractive index, which corresponds to that used in the case of third-order nonlinear media. As a result, we calculated both intensity and Stokes parameters of transmitted light.

We summarize recent developments in the area of the coherent propagation of laser pulses through dielectric media. We will show that the principle of dynamical adiabaticity opens new avenues to control the non-perturbative and resonant interaction between two laser pulses and a three-level medium. Examples include the formation of stable wave forms that can travel through optical dielectric media in a loss-free manner with arbitrary pulse shapes, novel possibilities to store optical information in dielectric media in the form of spatially dependent excitations and techniques to exploit this information to control laser pulse envelopes
