Opis:
The concept of parametric spectra in electromagnetically induced transparency is clarified. In this context, the possibility for a coupling laser to reach absorption levels below the one-photon absorption is experimentally shown. In this sense, the first results of electromagnetically induced transparency for a coupling laser in a coherent-population-trapping dominated system are presented.

Opis:
The 4S' [1/2]0 → 4P' [3/2]1 transition of Ar(I) in a facing target sputtering chamber is measured using a Ti:sapphire ring laser at several operating conditions. Doppler width and line intensity are determined by analysis using the Voigt function. The thermodynamic temperature determined from the Doppler width increases linearly with discharge current and gas pressure. The population density from the line intensity is reduced to the reference temperature obtained by interpolating the discharge current to zero. The empirical relationship to describe population density at a discharge current and a gas pressure is discussed.

The photon avalanche effect has been recently observed at room temperature in erbium doped fluoride glasses and crystals, in a particularly clear way, displaying simultaneously all the typical features of this effect: (i) existence of a threshold for transmission at the excitation wavelength, (ii) up-conversion excitation threshold, (iii) long delay for threshold establishment. Analysing the first step of the avalanche effect as an anti-Stokes multiphonon absorption, it can be shown why this effect is so clearly observed at room temperature in our erbium studies. Our results are compared with other cases of avalanche, with cases which have been called "looping effects" and "quasi-avalanche" ones.

Opis:
A method which takes into account normalized oscillator strengths is detailed for the calculation of parameters in Judd-Ofelt theory (B.R. Judd, Phys. Rev. 127, 750 (1962), G.S. Ofelt, J. Chem. Phys. 37, 511 (1962)). In the case of a Pr$\text{}^{3+}$ -doped fluorozirconate glass, the Judd-Ofelt parameters obtained in this way do not depend strongly on the transitions included in the fit. Particularly, it is no longer necessary to exclude the $\text{}^{3}$H$\text{}_{4}$ → $\text{}^{3}$P$\text{}_{2}$ transition from the analysis. Three modified theories (F. Auzel, S. Hubert, P. Delamoye, J. Lumin. 26, 251 (1982), A.A. Kornienko, A.A. Kaminskii, E.B. Dunina, Phys. Status Solidi B 157, 267 (1990)) are also considered but do not improve the calculated intensities when the energy of the 5d level is set to its experimentally determined value. Finally, in connection with 1.3 μ amplification, the 1.3 μ reabsorption ($\text{}^{1}$G$\text{}_{4}$ → $\text{}^{1}$D$\text{}_{2}$) oscillator strength is computed from the various models as well as the 1.3 μ emission branching ratio ($\text{}^{1}$G$\text{}_{4}$ → $\text{}^{3}$H$\text{}_{5}$/$\text{}^{1}$G$\text{}_{4}$ → $\text{}^{3}$H$\text{}_{6}$). The best agreement with experiment is obtained with the standard Judd-Ofelt theory.

Opis:
An analysis of the three-level model for avalanche up-conversion in a steady state case is presented. Until now, no quantitative criterion has been defined to distinguish avalanche from nonlinear processes giving rise to anti-Stokes emissions. From our model, we drive a quantitative limit for the ratio between non resonant and resonant absorption cross-section to observe an avalanche process. Application of these calculations to practical cases demonstrates the ability of our model to predict an avalanche behavior. The interest of avalanche to pump up-conversion lasers is discussed by introducing a term in the rate equations due to the stimulated emission.

Influence of two different laser beam profiles, the Gaussian and the Π (top hat) profile on the resonance line widths and amplitudes in the Hanle electromagnetically induced transparency was studied. The laser beam propagates through the vacuum Rb glass cell. Studies were done at $D_1$ line for the open $\text{}^{87}Rb:$ $F_{g}$=2 → $F_{e}$=1 transition. Hanle electromagnetically induced transparency was measured for the two beam profiles with the same total power and beam diameter and experimental results showed that Gaussian and the top hat profiles give different amplitudes and widths of the Hanle resonances. Resonances obtained from the top hat laser beam profile have lower amplitudes and higher line widths.

Opis:
In the paper, a description of two-channel of optoelectronic sensor basing on cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy is presented. In contrast to the typical cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy systems, here a special optical system is applied. It provides possibility to direct more than one beam of laser radiation into a cavity. Thus, special lasers controller system and photoreceiver were developed as well. The setup includes two pulsed laser diodes. The optical signals from the lasers are registered with one special constructed photoreceiver, which is characterized by wide range of the detected wavelengths. Moreover, there was applied time division multiplexing technique, well-known in the telecommunication systems. Every laser is assigned to the suitable channel - the strictly determined temporary window. In this window, the signal from the exits of the optical cavity is registered. In the system, optical signal from many laser sources can be measured and value of absorption coefficient at a few different wavelengths can be determined parallel. Typical cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy system is designed to measure only one gas concentration, while the developed setup provides possibility to detect a trace concentration of two gases at the same time.

Opis:
Application of quantum cascade lasers in NO and $N_2O$ sensor is described. Cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy was used for this purpose. The detection was performed at vibronic molecular transitions in spectral regions of 5.23-5.29 μm and 4.46-4.54 μm for NO and $N_2O$, respectively. In order to avoid interferences by the gases contained in atmosphere $(H_2O, CO_2)$ the lines of 5.263 μm for NO and 4.530 μm for $N_2O$ were selected. Our two channel sensor is designated for simultaneous detection of both compounds. Each channel consists of single mode quantum cascade laser, optical cavity, and a photodetection module. The lasers were precisely tuned to the wavelength of interest. Optical cavities were built with spherical mirrors of high reflectance. The signals from the cavities outputs were registered with specially developed low noise detection modules.

Opis:
In this work we demonstrate confocal fluorescence imaging of hybrid nanostructures composed of silver nanowires and peridinin-chlorophyll-protein light-harvesting complexes. The length of silver nanowires, which reaches 10 μm, allows for determination of the nanowire position and consequently direct correlation with the fluorescence image. In this way we probe the influence of plasmon induced electromagnetic field on the fluorescence of light-harvesting complexes. When the nanowires are spaced from the light-harvesting complexes by a 10 nm thick dielectric layer, we observe a fluorescence enhancement, which depends upon the laser excitation wavelength. The measured enhancement values are 2.5 and 1.9 for 405 nm and 485 nm, respectively. Larger enhancement for the 405 nm excitation is attributed to direct creation of plasmon excitations in the silver nanowires.

This article deals with a new generation of scanning near field optical microscopes (SNOM), called apertureless SNOM, based on metallic, semi-conductive or dielectric probes. The classification of the apertureless probe among the usual SNOM probes is discussed in the first part. Then, we present the different apertureless SNOM configurations that we develop, with various commercial AFM and home-made tungsten tips, and several illumination and collection modes. Finally, after a preliminary result in near field imaging, we propose a promising application of such microscopes dedicated to the near field fluorescence spectroscopy.

Opis:
Investigation of nitric oxide and nitrous oxide optoelectronic sensors is described. The detection of both components was done by measurement of absorption that occurs due to transition between vibronic molecular transitions. The improvement of the sensitivity was achieved due to application of cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy. Two optical cavities (each one for each gas) built of high reflectance spherical mirrors were used. While the spectra of observed transitions are situated in mid-infrared range, two single mode quantum cascade lasers were applied. Their narrow emission lines were precisely tuned to the absorption lines of both investigated gases. The measurement of different mixtures of $Ar-NO$ and $Ar-N_2O$ within the range from 100 ppb to 10 ppm was performed. The relative uncertainty of the results did not exceed the level of 13%.
