Polish cinema of the 1960s presented a specific vision of Warsaw, different from earlier and later ones, although it contained some solid motifs for the entire PRL era. These include emphasizing the uniqueness of Warsaw, the war past as an inseparable part of the city’s identity (though in the 1960s with a slightly different meaning) or the problem of getting a flat. The separateness and specificity of the then created images of the capital was related to the political specificity of the decade, the cultural and social moment of Warsaw development, the domination of realism that made the message authentic and genological issues – the main role in creating the image of the city was played by comedy. These images, however, were sometimes surprisingly subversive, breaking the dominant image.

This article contains information and analysis of the Security Service's operational activities against the Catholic Church in Olkusz, based on an archival document produced by the security apparatus. The territory in question belonged administratively to the Krakow Province, while in the church administration it belonged to the Diocese of Kielce. The document includes a number of important issues: a description of the Catholic Church in Olkusz, including deaneries, and the description and staffing of individual religious congregations (for which the security police also kept up-to-date documentation); Catholic activities, being part of the structures of the church organization of individual deaneries and their parishes; a current list of Catholic agents and assets; agent cases conducted against individual church objects and the clergy; repression of the clergy; issues of catechization; cases of religious construction; cooperation between the security division and civic militia; difficulties in the work of the Olkusz security service in church matters; and “hotspots” in Olkusz. Thanks to the agents it acquired, the security apparatus had current information on the functioning of the church in Olkusz, especially the clergy. Therefore, it could effectively watch over the church’s activities, neutralize many of its intentions, and punish defiant clergy in various ways. This edited archival document illustrates a wide range of issues dealt with by the Security Service of the 1960s. Its form, and this systematic range of issues, was imposed from above and was compulsory throughout the entire territory of the People's Republic of Poland.

Croatian film of the 1960s is colored by the poetics of auteurial cinema which was already emerging in the previous decade, but dominated in the 1960s, both in the production of cinema (both fiction films and animation), but also in the reception of these films with independent and ambitious critics. The text discusses the production modes of the era in Croatia and Yugoslavia, as well as several aspects of the poetics of cinematic modernism (its history and the importance of innovation), with Branko Ivanda’s feature debut Gravity (Gravitacija), in which all sorts of stylistic experiments blend well with traditional motifs and cinematic procedures, anticipating Ivanda’s auteuristic oevure.

For the majority of Leftists in the 1960s, the Soviet Union ceased to be intellectually and ideologically inspiring. Both Soviet Communism and Western capitalism at that time represented “the System” which offered universal manipulability and universal marketability as its only alternative modes. Thus, the Left searched for authentic socialism, whether in the Marxist-humanist philosophy, in the Third World revolutions, or in the local socialist traditions. However, even though the global Left faced several general problems common to all Cold War worlds, there were also important contextual differences which prevented the common base from further development.     Following this general context, this article will focus on the Left in Czechoslovakia and in the USA, particularly on the question whether the Czechoslovak reform movement of the late 1960s was inspiring for various groups on the US Left. With regard to the U.S. left-wing reactions to the Prague Spring or to the resistance of Czechoslovak people against the Warsaw Pact invasion, the article will pay attention especially to the discursive dichotomy of authentic socialism vs. counter-revolution.

This study focuses on the reflection of the relationship between the army and ideology in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. The main attention is paid to the issue of membership of Czechoslovak People's Army officers in the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia before 1968. Through the analysis of oral-historical interviews, the author follows the narrative and legitimizing strategies of rejecting or accepting party membership, which was one of the conditions of career growth in the military during the period under review. An important factor in (re) constructing narrators’ memories in this case is the current media image of the communist regime in Czech society.

Polski film fabularny w latach 60. XX wieku był nie tylko medium przynoszącym rozrywkę czy też naukę, przyczynił się także do kształtowania gustów Polaków w zakresie architektury wnętrz. Architektura wnętrz w omawianym okresie stała się ponownie polem do szeroko zakrojonych eksperymentów twórczych noszących znamiona nowoczesności. Obraz filmowy tego czasu w wielu przypadkach stał się zapisem historii polskiego wnętrzarstwa. Z perspektywy czasu, który minął możemy traktować kadry filmu jako obraz historyczny, dzięki któremu istnieje możliwość zobaczenia dzieł w ich naturalnym środowisku.
Polish feature films of the 1960s were deemed a medium of entertainment and education as well as a medium which contributed to creating social trends in the interior design tastes. Interior design, in the period under the analysis, became an area of a wide range of creative experiments featuring signs of modernity. The film images of those times in many instances have now become records of the history of Polish interior design. In the perspective of the time that has already lapsed, we can view the film frames as a historical image due to which we can still see the artists' works in their natural setting.

The article presents the problems of private life of intellectuals in Poland “after Yalta” through the prism of the cinema. The biggest problem of people in the 1950s and 1960s was the lack of a satisfying home. The homes of young intellectuals shown in Polish films are the spectrum of dreams, most often impossible to achieve in real life. Apartments located in multi-family housing estates that immortalized in the Polish feature films between the years 1956–1970 are confirmation of the highest quality of Polish industrial design. Real people’s apartments were cramped, ugly, and primitive.

W artykule poddano analizie wspomnienia ukraińskiej poetki Iryny Żyłenko o pokoleniu ukraińskiej inteligencji lat 60. XX wieku. Opowieść kijowskiej poetki, zapisana w listach i pamiętnikach, porusza najbardziej ze względu na postać samej narratorki-bohaterki. Niezależnie od zewnętrznych okoliczności, a więc politycznego zniewolenia, biedy, zafałszowania świata, imperatywu sowieckiej ideologii, zawsze stara się zachować optymizm i radość życia, realizując w ten sposób swoisty życiowy projekt vita activia, którego najważniejszą cześć stanowi sztuka i niezależna twórczość. Staje się ona źródłem siły, radości i godności dla narratorki, ale także dla całego jej pokolenia. We wspomnieniach dominuje antropocentryczny, personalistyczny stosunek do świata i drugiego człowieka.
The article analyzes the memories of an Ukrainian poetess, Irina Zhilenko, devoted to the environment of 1960s Ukrainian authors. The story written down by the Kiev poetess in letters and diaries touches mainly through the person of the very narrator – hero. Irrespective of the external circumstances such as political constraints, day-to-day poverty, falsehood of the soviet reality and the imperative of communist ideology, she always strives to maintain optimism and joy of life. Hence, she implements a genuine life project vita activia, the critical part of which is art and artistic freedom. For the poetess and her generation, the artistic activity is the source of strength, joy and dignity. The memoir is dominated by anthropocentric and personal approach to the world and another human being.
У статті досліджуються спогади української поетеси Ірини Жиленко про покоління шістдесятників. Розповідь київської поетеси, записана в листах і щоденнику, найбільш хвилює з уваги на постать самої оповідачки-героїні. Незалежно від зовнішніх обствин, отже політичного поневолення, щоденної нужди, фальшування світу, імперативу радянської ідеології, вона завжди намагається зберігати оптимізм і радість життя, таким чином реалізуючи винятковий життєвий проект vita activia, найважливішу частину якого становить мистецтво і творча свобода. Творчість стається для героїні і її покоління джерелом сили, радості і гідності. У спогадах переважає антропоцентричне, персоналістичне ставлення до світу і другої людини.

Niniejszy tekst ma na celu ukazanie przez pryzmat designu dwóch diametralnie różnych od siebie narracji dotyczących potencjału nuklearnego, które współistniały w Stanach Zjednoczonych od końca lat 40. do schyłku lat 60. XX w. Pierwszą z nich była fascynacja energią atomową, będąca genezą futurystycznych wizji przyszłości, której upatrywano w estetyce ówczesnego wzornictwa. Druga podszyta była lękiem związanym ze skutkami potencjalnego ataku nuklearnego, kiedy głównym polem designu były projekty schronów. Na podstawie selekcji przykładów tekst podejmie próbę odpowiedzi na pytania, czy design ery atomowej może zostać podzielony według prostego schematu fascynacja-strach, czy może ukaże on bardziej wielowymiarowy obraz społeczeństwa amerykańskiego i jego spojrzenia na wzornictwo.
This text aims to show, through the prism of design, two diametrically opposed narratives about nuclear potential, which coexisted in the United States from the late 1940s to the late 1960s. The first one was the fascination with atomic energy, which was the genesis of futuristic visions of the future, seen in the aesthetics of the design of the time. The second one was the fear of the consequences of a potential nuclear attack, when the main field of design was the design of shelters. Based on a selection of examples, the text will attempt to answer the question of whether the design of the atomic era can be divided according to the simple scheme of fascination and fear, or whether a more multidimensional picture of American society and its view of design will emerge from it.

In this paper I analyse the results of a paradigmatic shift in the history of experimental writing. Drawing from the historiographical structure of natural sciences proposed by Thomas S. Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), I read Umberto Eco’s theory of the ‘open work’ as a narrativisation of that shift or ‘change of paradigm’. In The Open Work (1962) Eco reads James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) as a watershed for Western history. Joyce’s writing, according to Eco, offered a successful response to the European context of the 1920s that would change the experience of reading and writing forever, as well as the understanding of literary experimentation. This Joycean shift becomes apparent in the 1960s, when experimental publications by authors such as Italo Calvino, Julio Cortázar, B. S. Johnson and Georges Perec indicate that something characteristic was shared under this new paradigm; something that I call an experimentalism.
W niniejszym artykule analizuję wyniki paradygmatycznej zmiany w historii piśmiennictwa eksperymentalnego. Czerpiąc z historiograficznej struktury nauk przyrodniczych proponowanych przez Thomasa S. Kuhna w Strukturze rewolucji naukowych (1962), czytam teorię Umberta Eco o dziele otwartym jako narratywizację tej zmiany lub właśnie "zmianę paradygmatu". W Dziele otwartym (1962) Eco uznaje Ulissesa Jamesa Joyce'a z 1922 za datę przełomową w historii Zachodu. Pisarstwo Joyce'a, zgodnie z Eco, dało udaną odpowiedź na europejski kontekst lat 20., który na zawsze zmienił doświadczenie czytania i pisania, a także rozumienie doświadczenia literackiego. To przejście staje się widoczne w 1960 roku, kiedy wydawnictwa eksperymentalne publikowane przez autorów takich jak Italo Calvino, Julio Cortázar, B.S. Johnson i Georges Perec wskazują, że coś charakterystycznego było współdzielone w ramach nowego paradygmatu; coś, co nazywam tu eksperymentalizmem.

Classics of Polish Design. Furniture Icons from the Polish People's Republic (PRL) presents a review of the best Polish furniture designs from the Polish People's Republic: the 1950s and 1960s. The paper continues the series devoted to the "Classical Polish Design", presenting the results of research on Polish post-war furniture and the icons of Polish design, carried out within the framework of dissertations in the Department of Wood Technology in the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW). Some of the innovative furniture designs have been analysed in the hereby article. We present a chronologically organised review of designs that aspired to become breakthrough and timeless (design icons), with the author's background and the furniture's style, structure and materials.
Klasyka polskiego designu. Ikony meblarstwa PRL-u. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie najlepszych projektów mebli z czasów PRL-u, czyli lat 50. i 60. Artykuł kontynuuje cykl „Klasyka polskiego designu”, prezentujący wyniki badań nad powojennym polskim meblarstwem i ikonami polskiego designu, prowadzonych w ramach prac dyplomowych na WTD SGGW. W artykule przeanalizowano nowatorskie projekty mebli. W ujęciu chronologicznym wybrano i opisano projekty aspirujące do roli przełomowych i ponadczasowych (ikon wzornictwa), przedstawiając osobę autora i charakteryzując meble stylistycznie, konstrukcyjnie i materiałowo.

Situated within the fields of culinary history, the history of everyday life and narrative studies, this article, based on a content analysis of Monica Sheridan’s cookbook entitled Monica’s Kitchen, explores various ways in which time manifests itself in this publication. This research aims to illustrate that cookbooks can be treated as a valuable source for an analysis of the past, the present and the future, and ultimately, add to the growing body of research focused on an Irish culinary history of the twentieth century.
Usytuowane na pograniczu takich dyscyplin jak historia kulinarna, historia codzienności oraz badania nad narracją, niniejszy artykuł bazujący na jakościowej analizie treści w książce kucharskiej Moniki Sheridan pt. Monica’s Kitchen analizuje różne sposoby, w jakich czas uwidacznia się w tej publikacji. Artykuł ten ma na celu ukazanie tego, że książki kucharskie mogą stanowić cenne źródło w analizie przeszłości, teraźniejszości i przyszłości, a także wzbogacić rosnącą liczbę badań skoncentrowanych na irlandzkiej historii kulinarnej XX wieku.

We wrześniu 1969 r. w Zachęcie - Centralnym Biurze Wystaw Artystycznych w Warszawie pokazano wystawę Koszalińskie plenery 1963–1968. Wystawa zgromadziła siedemdziesiąt dzieł polskich i zagranicznych artystów stworzonych podczas plenerów w Osiekach w latach sześćdziesiątych XX wieku. Prace należały do Muzeum Pomorza Środkowego w Słupsku; dziś stanowią one rdzeń kolekcji sztuki współczesnej Muzeum w Koszalinie. Artykuł omawia niektóre aspekty wystawy w 1969 r. w Warszawie jako prezentacji międzynarodowego zbioru sztuki, który powstał dzięki darowiznom artystów biorących udział w plenerach Osieckich. Analizy strategii organizacji ekspozycji i instytucjonalizacji zbiorów mieszczą się w perspektywie badawczej nowej muzeologii i historii wystawiennictwa.

Opis:
The study focuses on the importance of the Parliament’s involvement in construction of the Czechoslovak state. With the exception of the German occupation, as the legislature of the Czechoslovak Republic, the National Assembly played an important role in affecting its republican and democratic character. The article discusses two of the most important stages of the formation of the Czechoslovak statehood. First is the Interwar period when the Czechoslovak statehood demonstrated features typical of parliamentary democracy with assumed parliamentary power, followed by the 1960s when the common state of the Czechs and Slovaks developed on a federal level.

El presente artículo se propone estudiar el funcionamiento y el significado del recurso de la violencia en tres obras tempranas de Rodolfo Santana, uno de los dramaturgos venezolanos contemporáneos más reconocidos en América Latina. Apoyándonos en el método propuesto por Albuquerque (Violent Acts: a study of contemporary Latin American theatre, 1991), vamos a analizar el lenguaje verbal y no verbal de la violencia en las obras escritas por Santana en la década de los sesenta (La muerte de Alfredo Gris, 1965; Algunos en el islote, 1966; El Ordenanza, 1966) intentando, asimismo, profundizar en su dimensión ideológica.
The aim of the study is to examine the functioning and significance of violence in the early works of Rodolfo Santana, a Venezuelan playwright. Using the method proposed by S.J. Albuquerque (Violent Acts: a study of contemporary Latin American theatre, 1991), we will analyze the verbal and nonverbal violence in the texts of Santana written during the 1960s (La muerte de Alfredo Gris, 1965; Algunos en el islote, 1966; El Ordenanza, 1966) with the view to examining its ideological level as well.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza funkcjonowania i znaczenia zjawiska przemocy we wczesnych sztukach wenezuelskiego dramaturga Rodolfa Santany. Posługując się metodą zaproponowaną przez S.J. Albuquerque (Violent Acts: a study of contemporary Latin American theatre, 1991), uczynimy przedmiotem naszych dociekań przemoc werbalną i niewerbalną, obecną w tekstach Santany z lat 60. (La muerte de Alfredo Gris, 1965; Algunos en el islote, 1966; El Ordenanza, 1966), próbując jednocześnie zgłębić jej wymiar ideologiczny.
