Opis:
The article presents the results of an analysis of marking of palatal l in prints from the source database of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (16th-century Polish language dictionary). The analysis takes into account the various conditions of this phenomenon: functional, frequency, contextual, textual, regional and publishing ones. The analysis shows that the rare records of the consonant l’ certified in the papers originated from the spelling of manuscripts. Most often, they appear in printed texts from the first half of the sixteenth century, mainly in the earliest texts and dictionaries, as well as in texts originating from southern Poland and southern Borderlands. Marking of palatal l in printed materials is characterised by a high degree of lexicalisation and dependence on the phonetic context and less dependent on the place of publication.

The article aims to present a method for identifying and extracting terms from sixteenth- century texts based on four criteria: a) textual – assuming that if a semantic unit’s meaning is confirmed only in texts characteristic of a specific field of science or knowledge, then it is a term of that period; b) linguistic – based on the information about the semantic unit originating from prestigious languages (Latin or/and Greek)and provided by the author; c) disciplinary – based on the information about the semantic unit being used by a specific professional group and provided by the author; d) linguistic and disciplinary (which combines criteria 2 and 3).

Between about 1414 and 1592, the castle in Kórnik belonged to the Górka family – representatives of the Polish Crown’s power elite in the Early Modern era. In the third quarter of the 16th century, on the initiative of its then-owner, Count Stanisław Górka, the castle and its surroundings were modernised and extended. This article seeks to reconstruct and interpret the resulting residence complex, with particular focus on the castle, but also the private town, family church and hunting lodge. Some basic questions are asked concerning the new architectural solutions appearing at the time, the provenance of the formal-ideal models, and the author of the modernization design. In the adopted research method, assuming an interdisciplinary approach, the residence is seen as resultant of the investor’s needs and possibilities arising from his social, political and financial position.

The letter of Muscovy ruler Boris Godunov which is held in the Library of Kórnik, is the earliest historical document that testifies about the relations between the government of Muscovy and Ukrainian Cossacks since the end of the sixteenth century. In the article are reviewed the historical context of such contacts and their long term consequences. At that time, led by Krzysztof Kosynskyi, Cossacks entered into conflict with powers of Commonwealth. Godunov informed Cossacks that his government invites them for military service. It was the first time when Cossacks obtained the opportunity to make a choice between the service to the Polish King or Muscovy Tzar. During the next a half of the century, Ukrainian Cossacks transformed into a powerful military corporation, which influenced on the balance of powers in international relations of the region. Later on, when in the consequence of the war with Poland, Cossacks switched themselves to the side of Muscovy in 1654, this change provided a foundation for the hegemony of Muscovy in East Europe

The article is a continuation of the research on linguistic variance in the first Polish edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Krakow 1549, Helena Unglerowa). The inflectional forms were analyzed: the dative, instrumental and locative of plural nouns. The investigated issues included: textual differentiation, scope and degree of normalization of the particular alterations. The results of the analysis were compared with the results of research on other texts from the first half of the 16th century. The conclusions are: a) the books certify the initial but advanced stage of the demorphologization process of gender in plural nouns; b) the text distribution of most variants is even, the discontinuous textual distribution is characterized by only three inflectional forms: koniem and ludziom in the dative case, -och in the instrumental of the plural form of masculines; c) the state certified in the books is in most categories convergent with the state certified in other texts, the exception is the form of the instrumental and locus of masculine and neuter nouns; d) in the analyzed area, Księgi show little convergence with the language of Glaber’s texts (preferring the forms: ludziem in the dative case, -ami in the instrumental case, occasional end-case -och in the locative of masculines).

The article summarize a number of analysis of the phonetic variance acknowledged in the first Polish edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Kraków 1549, H. Unglerowa). Investigated issues included: textual differentiation, scope and degree of normalization of the particular alternations. In a sample of 11 analyzed phonetic oppositions the biggest textual differentiation demonstrate: mdl- || -mgl-, jestli || jesli, biał- || białł- oraz miedzy || między. The most clearly seen border of textual forms differentiation runs between column 384 and 381a and is already known from the graphic and typographic analyses. The degree of normalization of the particular variants, diversified in terms of textual localization, allows to divide the examined antique print on 9 textual areas. Among these, two areas distinguish: Cresc61–137, with the lowest degree of normalization and the highest level of the regressive form usage, and Cresc573–605, characterized by high rates of the norm-setting variants occurrence and the progressive forms preference. Quite numerous dialect words from Wielkopolska, the most likely adopted from handwritten basis for print, appeared in the text. The results of analysis substantiate the hypothesis which attributes the translation authorship to Andrzej Glaber from Kobylin.

The goal of this article is to provide a detailed description of the mię cię się // mie cie sie alternation as presented in Księgi o gospodarstwie from 1549. In the analysis, four aspects have been taken into consideration: 1) the alternation’s position range, 2) the textual lack of continuity of the alternation’s state, 3) identification of the extent to which a compositor affected a text, 4) the extent of normalization of the mię cię się // mie cie sie opposition in all identified parts of the text against the background of other texts from the time under scrutiny. In the text, the variants were reflected only in the forms of the się reflexive pronoun. A majority of the text is evidence of a status typical of Krakow prints from the first half of the 16th century referred to as the Lesser Poland standard: a verb + sie, a preposition + się. A different status is confirmed in the initial columns of the book: adjacent to a verb – columns 113–248, following the w, przed, na and nad prepositions – columns 48–78, following the za preposition – columns 1–112. This alternation is most diversified with respect to the text when it accompanies a verb. The distribution of modes of marking the forms of the reflexive pronoun provides evidence that this phenomenon could be affected by the compositor.

The Wallachian monasteries are very well documented in the 16th century, but the life of nuns or monks after joining the monastery is a lesser-known aspect. Various details can be found in the life of a noblewoman (taking the name of Mușa), who decided to become a nun (Magdalina) during the first years of the 16th century. Mușa’s life before entering the monastery is not very well known. Although many researchers tried to link her to the Craiovescu family, one of the most influential families in Wallachia at that time, this paper argues against this opinion. The historical sources describe her as a relative of a Wallachian nobleman, Cârjeu, and as the wife of Hamza, another important nobleman from the first decades of the 16th century. Mușa took vows in the monastery, which she built, and even after she became a nun, she preserved some of her former habits. Thus, the nun Magdalina kept in her possession villages and Roma families, which she donated to different monasteries, a widespread situation in the Byzantine monasticism. Although the sources did not describe her everyday life as a nun, they documented her relations with the political and ecclesiastical elites.

Opis:
Lexemes Evangelic and Protestant appeared in the Polish language in the middle of the 16th century. The name Evangelic was first used by Stanislaw Orzechowski in the work Rozmowa około egzekucyjej of 1563. The name Protestant was created in connection with the protest of Martin Luther’s followers at the Diet of Speyer and its only 16th century attestation comes from Marcin Kromer’s work Mnicha z dworzaninem rozmowa trzecia of 1553. This lexeme also functioned in the meaning not related to religious issues but resulting from the Latin basis. A general name applied in the 16th c. in relation to the Reformation’s followers was the lexeme Evangelic used, among others, by Bielski, Wujek or Skarga. At that time, apart from Evangelic, names reflecting internal diversity of the movement were in use such as, among others, luteran, luteryjan, luter, kalwinista, kalwinita, kalwin or auszpurczanin as well as general names such as konfessyjonista. In subsequent centuries the lexeme Protestant popularized in the first non-religious meaning as a synonym of an opponent. Dictionary resource material from the 17th and 18th centuries concerning the above mentioned lexemes does not allow to claim whether they became synonyms already in the Middle Polish period. The process of semantic identification of the lexemes finished in the Modern Polish period, which is confirmed by both the Polish language dictionaries and the most recent Polish language included in the National Corpus of Polish. It appears that such identification is a result of expiration of the first sub-meaning of the lexeme Protestant as well as an effect of the manner of defining this lexeme involving separation of a religious meaning from specified historical events. When the lexemes appeared in the 16th century, the lexeme Evangelic prevailed whereas currently the lexeme Protestant is more popular.

The purpose of this article is to recall the 16th century Latin-Polish dictionaries by Bartholomew of Bydgoszcz. The article describes the figure of the monk, the history of his works as well as their structure and contents. The interest in the lexicons grew in the 70s of the 20th century when a manuscript dated 1532 (considered to be lost after the second world war) was found and a dictionary dated 1544 was unexpectedly discovered. A decision was made then to (jointly) publish both lexicons in the reversed version (Polish-Latin). This project still has not been completed which certainly has had its effect on the researchers’ weakening interest in the dictionaries and a small number of publications. Therefore the article presents possibilities of the analysis of the Polish and Latin lexical material.

The article is a continuation of studies concerning textual differences in distribution of variant phonetic forms. The analysis covers the forms being a part of four variances: jestli // jesli, -mdl- // -mgl-, miedzy // między and -mieszk- // -mięszk-. Different textual distribution of the studied forms proved to be significant – not only revealed the segmentation of text known from previous analysis (graphical and phonetic), but also 3 new, previously unknown text boundaries extending between the columns 510/511, 591/592 and 612/613. The strongest relationship with the job of a compositor is indicated by textual repartition of forms belonging to two variances: miedzy // między i jestli // jesli. With regard to the analysed forms the central part Cresc is most standardized, contained in the columns 138-384, whereas the most progressive (containing the greatest number of progressive variants) – is the section of text including the columns 381a–R10v. The completed study has also demonstrated that the boundary between the cluster Q and R established by Kazimierz Piekarski on the basis of a typographical analysis is also the boundary of occurrence of certain phonetic phenomena.

This article presents a subsequent stage of research into the textual variability of alterations of the phonetic forms in the first Polish edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Krakow 1549). The ir || er group has been analysed as continuants of the Proto-Slavic conjunctions *ir, yr. The status of the discussed phonetic alternation depends on the core location and the textual distribution. It has been established that within the specific cores, the status of the alternation attested in Cresc is related to the status identified in other printed texts of that time and is considerably progressive. The second part of the text (CrescII) tends to be much more normalized where the innovative forms are preferred. However, this part of the text also tends to be most diversified with respect to the analysed phonetic alternation. A differentiation of the textual distribution of the opposite forms has also revealed two new text boundaries stretching between columns 409/410 and 524/525.

Opis:
One of the main postulates of the reformation movement, apart from the theological questions, was a proposal of the internal reform of the church institution. The Father of the Reformation, as Rev. Martin Luther is called in the source literature, raised the questions concerning the mission of the Church, its role in the magisterium, and also and perhaps above all its hierarchical structure and about the role of the clergy in the process of the eternal salvation. As a result of his reflections and probably his observations and his own experiences Luther undermined in succession different dogmatic, theological questions as well as those regarding the organization of the Roman Catholic Church. Slogans of renewal and reforms of the church structure spread very rapidly through the territory of German Reich, gaining numerous supporters among European nations. One of those for whom the Reformation ideas became the main field of activity was French man John Calvin. That well-rounded, well educated and well-read lawyer, knowing the main works of the German monk, acquired his principal theses postulating the changes in the functioning of the Church. Additionally, Calvin made a division of the Church between the earthly – the visible and the heavenly – the invisible one, and the person who bonds it, guarantees its unity and permanency, the indivisibility is the only and the highest Priest – Jesus Christ. In the work of his life Institucio Religionis Christianae Calvin embodied a full picture of the Christian Church as, in his opinion, it should be. Analysing particular issues regarding the function of the clergymen, the pope, celebrating the sacraments, penance and conversion, and also the eternal salvation, we are given the basic compendium of knowledge concerning the ecclesiology by John Calvin. His teaching about the Church, although in some points different in from the preaching of Rev. Martin Luther, however oscillates within the principal slogans of Reformation: Sola Fides – the man is saved solely by faith, Sola Gratia – God’s grace is necessary for salvation, Sola Scriptura – the only source of faith is the Holy Bible. He also added the idea: Solus Christus - only Christ saves, He is in the centre of The Church, we can observe Calvin’s Christ centred attitude in his preaching and in building ideological basics of the reformed denomination.

This article is a continuation of research into the textual differentiation of the distribution of the variant phonetic forms in Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn of 1549. The analysis includes forms with the ir // er (≤ *ŕ̥) groups. While the diversity of the textual distribution of the surveyed forms pertains to only six roots: -ḿ_řv-, -v́_řb-, -ṕ_rv-, -č_rń, -tv́_rʒ-, -v́_řx-, it is quite considerable as it encompasses 10 textual areas coinciding with the text segmentation typical of previous (graphic and phonetic) analyses. Three text layers indicate the typesetter’s intervention. As for the analysed form, the part containing the 381a–R10v quarts was the most standardised chunk of the text; it is also quite conservative with respect to the solutions in the area analysed. The analysis also demonstrates that the demarcation line between the Q and R quarts, as indicated by Kazimierz Piekarski on the basis of a typographic analysis, coincides with the demarcation line of phonetic phenomena.

books for women, England, 16th Century
Opis:
Renaissance in England is frequently referred to as the „Golden Age”, but despite countless innovative views and ideas, many aspects of social life did not develop simultaneously. The analysis of the 16th-century courtesy books for women enables readers to have a closer look at the Renaissance ideal of a perfect woman and the upbringing process, to which she was subjected in order to reach perfection. The most valued traits, defined mainly by men, still did not let women free themselves from stiff etiquette rules imposed on them several centuries earlier. While a man was spreading his Renaissance wings, a woman was silently staring at the ground beneath her feet.

Opis:
In premodern literature, stereotype, called locus communis, had to play an important role inherited from Greek and Latin Antiquity’s rhetorics. In particular, it served as source of convincing arguments appropriate to discuss philosophical, theological or moral questions. The concept of common place has also found its use in short stories of 16th century. Firstly, in the realm of invention, when authors adapted narrative plots taken from written tradition; secondly, in the realm of elocution, when they employed topic images and sentences. The aim of this paper is to elucidate those two meanings of stereotype in French nouvelles published in that time.

Opis:
The issue that is the main focus of this paper has not been of great interest to bibliology scholars. Even though one version of the Brest Bible, marked as B, was described quite thoroughly by Feliks Bentkowski already two hundred years ago, the catalogue descriptions have until today been based upon the scheme formulated by Karol Estreicher (senior). He identified three versions of the Brest Bible, which differ only in the title page. The fact is that there are only two versions, A and B, in existence, which differ in the first gathering (*) or (very rarely) in the first two gatherings (*, **). The gatherings of version B were established to have been printed in the 1580s or 1590s in Jan Karcan’s press in Vilnius. Apparently, a certain number of the Old Testament gatherings A–Y were typeset and printed in Brest in 1563. There is only one extant complete copy of it with the newly printed gatherings, whereas in the remaining dozen or so copies that have survived it is only one, or rarely, two gatherings, and sometimes only single leaves. The search for versions of the Bible also made it possible to compile a list of 135 copies of the Brest Bible stored today in public, monastic and church collections in Europe and North America.

The article discusses ten 16th-century designations of the beneficiaries of the Catholic Church, that is the persons endowed with offices, which were connected with specific profits. These names have been excerpted from the published volumes of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (“The Dictionary of the 16th-Century Polish”). The article presents their origin and subsequent history. It is worth noting that the majority of the names of church beneficiaries that were confirmed in the 16th-century Polish language appeared just in that century. Despite the disappearance of offices and posts designated by them, the greater part of those lexemes have survived until today, if not in general Polish, than in its ecclesiastical variety as obsolete or historical lexemes.

Opis:
In the extensive work of the Dubrovnik-born Benedictine Lodovico Tuberon de Crieva, „Commentaria de temporibus suis” describing the events in the Mediterranean in the years 1490–1522, there is a small passage about the events on the island of Hvar (ital. Lesina). The island was then, together with most of the Dalmatian coast, under the rule of the Venetian Republic. On Hvar in 1510, a popular uprising against the local nobles broke out, which lasted with varying intensity until 1514. The Venetian authorities then sent considerable armed forces, which, after defeating the rebels at sea and on land, suppressed the rebellion. It is surprising, however, that Tuberon suggests in the above-mentioned passage that the outbreak of the revolt could have been provoked by the Venetians themselves, who feared the nobility allegedly favoring the King of Hungary. He also mentions the leading role of a clergyman who was supposed to encourage the plebs to act and initiate a revolt. Taking the mentioned text of Tuberon as a starting point, the author analyzes the political and social situation on the island of Hvar as well as the background and course of the events in the years 1510–1514. The author's goal is to establish what the grounds for Tuberon's presumptions were and to what extent they are true.

The article is a continuation of research concerning textual differences of the distribution of variant graphic and phonetic forms in the first Polish-language edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Helena Unglerowa, 1549). The analysis comprised the markings of the secondary anticipatory nasality. The article proposes a graphic interpretation of this phenomenon. Such interpretation results from the recognition as common a phenomenon of nasalization of labial vowels before nasal consonants. Different distribution of the studied forms in the text proved significant – it revealed not only the segmentation of text already known from previous analyses (graphic and phonetic – boundaries 429/430 and 485/486), but also three new, previously unknown text boundaries running between columns 477/478, 501/502 and 531/532. The convergence of the separated boundaries with a division of text into typesets was confirmed three times. This attests to a strong dependence of the discussed phenomenon on the type-setting factor. A comparative analysis demonstrated that as far as marking the secondary nasality is concerned, Księgi bear witness of the condition unknown in other prints from this period, which is closer to some 16th-century manuscripts, especially the letters of Stanisław Koszucki.

The analysis of the contents of the books of pontifical acts of the Kuyavian bishops issued in the first half of the 16th century and the survey of selected books of the Włocławek Consistory permits the identification of more than 100 previously unknown members of the religious clergy originating chiefly from monasteries situated in the area of the Kuyavian Diocese, who received minor or major holy orders from their ordinaries and suffragans.

The sketch presents selected linguistic and extra-linguistic mechanism used in historiography for the purpose of developing national community (at that time understood as the nation of the gentry) and strengthening its internal bonds. The mechanisms used to be referred to as cognitive or visual propaganda. The goal of the paper is achieved by means of the presentation of the linguistic means used for the purpose of shaping historical consciousness as the foundation of national community or expressions referring to the basic concepts related to the national community, i.e. names of the country (kingdom, crown, homeland, state, Poland, republic, the Sarmatia), citizens (Polanie, Polacy, Lechy, Lachy, the Sarmatians) and finally – indication of the role of the graphic code. The source documentation includes 16th century Polish language catalogues of monarchs treated as a tool of social communication and the strategic element of state policy.

Geometria, to jest miernicka nauka (Geometry or the science of measurement) by Stanisław Grzepski was published in 1566. A look at the examined treaty from the angle of the discourse theory makes it possible to notice a living communication process leading to the formation of the paradigm designated by the expert – layman roles in the 16th century scientifi c, educational literature. When sharing information with a novice, an expert reaches for the specialised register vocabulary including, most of all, scientifi c terms being in operation in the field of the 16th-century science. Terminology is a tool for creating a clear worldview, it combines the abstractness of the message with the observation of the practical sphere. The occurrence of terms in a text fulfi lling an educational function legitimises the author as an expert, proves the effectiveness of the solutions dictated by science. Moreover, terms in an educational text, as a record of knowledge, are a functional instrument of ensuring that the reasoning is consistent, making it a logically designed structure that is recipient-friendly in terms of cognition.

It is often said that early Romanian biblical translations from Church Slavonic follow the source texts slavishly. Indeed, these texts stay close to their Church Slavonic originals in topic, lexical content, and orthographical rules. However, we aim to describe how the 16th century translators and redactors dealt with Church Slavonic structures that could not be easily adapted into Romanian by means of formal equivalence. The Slavonic present participle, which appears plenty in the Slavonic Psalter, was chosen as litmus test. While theoretically having a formal correspondent in Old Romanian (the gerund), the Slavonic present participle has a range of uses and meanings that the Old Romanian gerund lacks. Thus, Romanian scribes must depart from the comfort of formal equivalence that calques and loans provide and choose the translation that convey meaning. The dynamic equivalence is obtained by selecting different solutions: gerunds, adjectives, objects and, most often, clauses, especially relative ones. Rendering participles with clauses (i.e. adjectives with verbs) forces the translator to make decisions going beyond the Slavonic participle itself. The analysis shows a tension between betraying the Slavonic text as little as possible and rendering it to the best of the redactor’s ability.

This paper discusses the first 3 mentions of the entry LUTER, as a common word, in the Polish language. They were recorded by Bartlomiej of Bydgoszcz in his dictionaries dated 1532 and 1544. According to the analysis made in the article, these are the examples of extremely quick registration of a new word in the Polish language, and most probably the only confirmations of this lexeme in dictionaries in 16th century and two subsequent centuries. The detailed write-up of the location of the entry LUTER in both dictionaries by Bartlomiej allowed the recollection of the lexicographic method applied by the monk and – in comparison with other religious Polish vocabulary – emphasizing the uniqueness of recording the entry LUTER as a common word, only a dozen years after the Reformation.

The paper thus aims to answer the question whether designations for religious dissenters used by Jakub Wujek reflect the actual multiplicity of reformed confessions existing at the time. The material has been excerpted from the first edition of Iudicium available from the Lower Silesian Digital Library. Jakub Wujek’s Iudicium employs 16 various appellations of followers associated with the Reformation movement. Taking into account lexical doublets, such as luteran and luteryjan, witemberczanin and witemberczyk, zwinglijan and zwinglijanin as well as more comprehensive terms such as heretyk, kacerz, nowowiernik, odszczepieniec and sektarz, the catalogue of names increases to 25 items.

W zbiorach bibliotecznych Wiktora hr. Pozostałe druki pochodzenia krakowskiego były dziełami Marka i Hieronima Scharffenbergów, Jana Halicza i Łazarza Andrysowica. Dwie najstarsze książki, z 1504 i 1505, to dzieło warsztatu Kaspra Hochfedera. Baworovianum gromadziło również 50 książek, wykonanych w cenionych wówczas centrach drukarskich. Były to (w kolejności alfabetycznej): Augsburg, Bazylea, Kolonia, Lipsk, Magdeburg, Metz, Norymberga, Paryż, Rzym, Strasburg, Wenecja i Wittenbergia.

Wstąpił także w szeregi stanu duchownego i w latach 1511-1521 przyjął wszystkie stopnie święceń. Po ordynowaniu go do stopnia prezbitera objął beneficjum altarysty w jednym z płockich kościołów.
Jan of Plock appears in sources in 1506 as a student at the University of Kraków. In the following years of his life he achieved bachelor's and master's degrees at this university. He also joined the clergy and was ordained between 1511 and 1521. After his ordination to the rank of presbyter, he took the altarist benefice in one of the churches in Płock. He probably belonged to that group of medieval clergy who, having no family support and no property of their own, hoped to achieve a significant position in the Church structures thanks to their own skills and education.

Wallachian pastoralism

Poland in the 15th-16th century
Opis:
The arguments included in the article were based on a small number of information preserved in the sources, which concern a seasonal presence of the Wallachian shepherds in the areas situated north of the line designating the scope of permanent (year-round) rural settlements founded on the Wallachian law. It was practised both in forests belonging to the king as well as in private estates throughout all seasons. This research resulted in the thesis stating that groups of the Wallachian shepherds led a seasonal grazing of their herds in the submontane areas already in the 15th century. Various factors, primarily of an economic nature, made these pastoral activities disappear or, at least, made them significantly limited at the turn of the 16th and 17th century. Pastoralism of a transhumance type existed throughout the entire period under discussion, in modern sources referred to as koszarnictwo (transhumance herding), consisting in periodic migrations of pastoral groups from permanent villages. Similarly to what I have claimed in my previously published research on the Wallachian pastoralism in the Carpathian areas, there are no indications in the sources, which would justify a thesis for a long time widespread in historical studies, on the presence of a nomadic phase in the history of the Wallachian colonization in the Polish areas. Also in the case of the areas currently studied, its existence can be given no confirmation.

Word and Gesture: a Few Remarks about the Declamatory Technique in the 16th Century In her essey the author focuses her attention on the technics of acting in the very first period of the Italian theatre, reborn in XVI century. Analysing the tractat of A. Ingegneri, the dialog of L. de’Sommi and other testimonies devoted to the scene practice of those days, the author of the essay describe the main rules of acting, on the one hand refered to the court theatre, on the other to the commedia dell’arte. In the court theatre decorations and the text of the play used to count much more than in commedia dell’arte and were thought to compensate for – as even in part – the poor level of acting of the interpreters – courtiers. On the other hand the basis of the commedia dell’arte theatre was acting, whilst the role of decorations was very limitated. Nevertheless the main rules of acting seem similar in both types of theatre.

The article was based on the archival inventory of the Chapter Library of 1598 and on the surviving manuscripts and historical printed documents of the library of the Kielce Chapter. The paper consists of an analytical part and an annex, which includes the edition of the archival source – the inventory. Thanks to the fact that a large part of the manuscripts and printed documents from a historical book collection survived, appropriate titles can be found in the footnotes of the annex. In addition, surviving documents allowed to perform calculations with regard to publishing centers. Most out of the 28 incunabula came from the land of the German language. Only 4 out of the 35 sixteenth-century printed documents came from domestic production (Cracow). The dominance of German printed documents was still maintained. The analysis of the manuscripts revealed links with the area of Czech and national culture. The invention of printing led to the influx of Western authors. In 1598 the chapter library contained liturgical books: missals, breviaries, agenda, antiphonaries, graduals. The liturgical books came from the tradition of the Diocese of Cracow and show the character of the Divine Office before introducing the books of the reformed Roman liturgy. In addition to liturgical books, the Chapter library contained typical branches of theology of the time: the Bible and biblical commentaries, texts of the Fathers of the Church, law, theology, pastoral manuals and others. Comparison of manuscripts and printed documents indicates that with the invention of printing the texts of the Fathers of the Church are more numerous, which is also a hallmark of the Renaissance and modern theology. The library of the Kielce Chapter presents interests and changes in theology at the turn of the Middle Ages and modern times.

Biography was a prominent component of Maria Bogucka’s research output, encompassing reviews, encyclopaedic entries and extended articles. She would also publish four biographical monographs. Bogucka was very eager to include in her biographies, especially those relating to women rulers, colourful accounts, expressive assessments and controversial opinions. Her biographical writing was ‘journalistic’ in essence, and looked to make emotive links with the heroes and heroines of her studies. Sensitive to economic issues and changes which had taken place in the mentality of societies, Bogucka was also interested in writing biographical accounts of representatives of the bourgeois elites. Biography in Bogucka’s oeuvre allowed her to analyse historical figures’ lives insightfully, thus exploring outstanding individuals’ personal fates.

Opis:
The author summarizes the origin and development of the thaler since its emergence in Central Europe in the 1520s to the general spread of the term “thaler” for large silver coins in the 1540s as well as the attempts to replace the thaler with another type of coin in the Roman-German Empire under the Second and Third Imperial Coin Order. The year 1566 was a major turning point. The “imperial thaler” was redefined in metrological terms and the collection of custom duties in the North Sea straits was regulated, which (instead of gold coins) continued to be collected in silver thalers. This move spurred the expansion of the thaler coins in those countries of continental Europe that used the North Sea trade route. At that time, the thaler also became the equivalent for mutual conversions of the most important monetary systems. This is evidenced by the exchange rates from the end of the 16th century from Hamburg. In them, the ”imperial thaler” serves as a tool for the mutual conversion the seven major currencies used in the North Sea and Baltic trade areas (the Lübeck mark, the Hamburg pound, the Antwerp pound, the Amsterdam pound, the imperial Rhine gulden, the Lisbon milreis and the Polish gulden).

The Dominicans from the monastery in Brzeg held intensive charity collecting activity, both in that city and in other localities of Silesia, within the boundaries of the area belonging to them. The collecting practices can be reconstructed on the basis of the accounts of revenues and expenditures of the convent preserved in the Department of Manuscripts of the Wrocław University Library. They show that the Dominican collecting was intensive, well organised and carried out by monks specialising in acquiring monetary donations and natural goods.
