    The paper addresses the problem of overshoot involved in singing accent stylisation. Selected phonetic features indexed as “American” and “Cockney” are analysed in the singing and speaking styles of a British vocalist, Adele. Overshoot, understood as a greater frequency or an exaggerated quality of a given feature, is characteristic of staged performance (Bell and Gibson 2011; Coupland 2007). PRAAT is used to establish the acoustic properties (F1 and F2) of the BATH and TRAP vowels, as well as the presence or absence of the BATH-TRAP split. The results show that Americanisation regarding the BATH-TRAP split in singing is present and the Americanised vowel tokens are “overshot”, having higher F2 frequency compared with the regular British TRAP vowel.

    Opis:
    Washing the figure of the Mother of God in Gidle, popular in the 20th century as “the bath”, dates back to the 17th century. The oldest printed mention concerning the practice comes from 1636, and is dated 19 June 1618. Since that moment 16 different notes de miraculis informing about the performance of the washing have been included in the edited collections of miracula. The descriptions often show everyday life of people who needed help at that moment. They also present the categories of human needs determining the use of the Gidle wine. They were most often diseases or ill-fated events. According to a description from 1948, the celebration of “the bath” was held during the Holy Mass. Having read the fragment of the Gospel that describes the miracle during the marriage at Cana of Galilee, the priest delivered a homily, in which he explained the meaning of the practice of washing to the congregation. Next he said the formula of blessing the wine and he intoned the litany to the Mother of God. After he repeated the words Health of the Sick three times, he submerged the figure in a bowl filled with wine. On the basis of the analyzed source material, the washing of the figure immediately after it had been found, or before putting it in the parish church, cannot be connected with the custom that is discussed here. This confirms the view that blessing wine, despite the earlier mentions, is a custom made popular only in the 20th century.

    Archaeological work since 2014 in the Hellenistic areas of Berenike, a key port on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, founded by Ptolemy II Philadelphus in c. 275 BC, has brought extensive evidence of water-related structures: a rock-cut well located inside a rebuilt early-Hellenistic gate and a nearby cistern with an associated rainwater-collection system, that has changed the way in which the sources and uses of water in Hellenistic Berenike is understood today. The research started with the excavation of an ash mound, a characteristic landmark in the western part of the site, which is now believed to be the rubbish dump from the furnace that heated a Hellenistic bathhouse. At this stage in the research, it can be argued that Hellenistic Berenike had sufficient water available on site not only for drinking (hence potable), and agricultural and industrial uses, but also for public bathing. This article summarises the current state of research, presenting recent discoveries of a Hellenistic date at the site within their archaeological, architectural and environmental contexts.

    Zasadniczym celem artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie rachunkowych różnic memoriałowych powstałych w wyniku zastosowania przy ich obliczaniu podejścia bilansowego bądź kategorii zaczerpniętych z rachunku przepływów pieniężnych, jak również zbadanie relacji zachodzących między wartościami dyskrecjonalnych różnic memoriałowych w przedsiębiorstwach implementujących określone strategie zarządzania zyskiem typu rachunkowego oraz w spółkach niewdrażających tego typu praktyk. Uzyskane wyniki badań empirycznych wykazały między innymi, iż dobór metodologii wyznaczania całkowitych różnic memoriałowych w znacznym stopniu wpływa na wartości parametrów strukturalnych widniejących w określonych modelach ekonometrycznych, służących do predykcji księgowego zarządzania zyskiem. Wszystko to sugeruje, iż przyjęty sposób obliczania różnic memoriałowych w ogromnej mierze wpływać może na dalsze szacunki skali i kierunków intencjonalnego kształtowania wyniku finansowego przedsiębiorstw.
    The main aim of the paper was to characterize the accruals arising from the use of the balance sheet approach or categories taken from the cash flow statement in their calculation, as well as to examine the relationships between the values of discretionary accruals in the enterprises implementing specific strategies of accrual-based earnings management and in companies that not implement these practices. The obtained results of empirical research showed, inter alia, that the selection of the methodology for computing of total accruals significantly influenced the values of structural parameters appearing in specific econometric models used to predict AEM practices. All this may suggest that the adopted method of calculating the different subcomponents of accruals may largely affect the further estimates of the scale and directions of intentional shaping of the financial result of enterprises.
