The article presents the results of the research on one of the manifestations of trust in higher education institutions, namely the attitude of students to examination and test supervision executed by objective observers. The research was conducted in June 2013 and the specific question applied in the research tool was a real example from the academic life, which was discussed in the media. The context of the analysis is mass nature of higher education. The text presents statistics showing the scale and growth of academic enrolment rate in Poland in the last quarter-century. The analysis focuses on the consequences of the mass nature of higher education for the experience of trust in educational interactions, and precisely on the experience of trust during examinations. In this paper we present a small part of our research on culture of trust in educational interactions assisted by ICT.

We are certainly living in the age of growing isolation, atomization and dehumanization of various forms of human existence and activity. This generalization applies in equal measure to present academic life, and the process has been greatly accelerated by the disappearance of many traditionally rooted forms of university life, as well as detrimental effects of all-pervading Covid-19 epidemic, both on university teaching, but also on the process of popularization and exchange of scientific knowledge. In contrast to present point-hunting nature of academic life where success is measured by the number of vaguely-defined and subjectively granted points the figure of Professor Jacek Fisiak stands out as the symbol of multidirectional academic success in various socio-political systems in which he happened to be active, both in Poland and on the international academic scene.

Objectives Academic burnout poses a challenge to the educational process. Higher education institutions have responsibilities similar to the ones of management in business settings. These institutions are responsible for creating conditions conducive to development and, as such, may be interested in verifying the presence of student burnout and pinpointing its causes. The purpose of this study was to answer these needs and develop a scale to measure the effect of organizational factors that may predict student burnout. Material and Methods This paper reports the results of a study conducted on a sample of Polish students (N = 659) to construct and validate a multidimensional measure of organizational factors impacting academic burnout, focusing on students. For background purposes and as a starting point, the authors used the concept of the areas of worklife by Ch. Maslach and M. Leiter, who identified 6 areas of the work environment that affect the relationships people develop with their work, i.e., workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values. Results The authors assessed the factor structure, reliability, and construct validity and performed confirmatory factor analysis of the new scale to measure 6 areas of academic life. Given the results of this study, the scale can be recommended as an adequate tool to measure organizational (academic) factors of burnout in students. Conclusions The authors have validated the final scale, which can be used to advance the understanding of the academic burnout phenomenon.

Tekst stanowi odpowiedź i wyraz sprzeciwu wobec, zaproponowanej przez profesora Piotra Nowaka, koncepcji ograniczonej dyskryminacji stosowanej na uniwersytecie. Autor wskazuje na potrzebą poszukiwania nowego paradygmatu tolerancji w kulturze życia akademickiego, na potrzebą decentracji interpersonalnej, którą uważa za pierwszy krok kreujący nowy paradygmat tolerancji. Decentracja interpersonalna ujmowana jest jako rozpatrywanie stosunków z innymi ludźmi, sytuacji i zjawisk, jednocześnie z różnych perspektyw, bez subiektywnej deformacji obrazu analizowanych zjawisk. W tekście postawiono szereg pytań, które stanowić mogą wartościowy przyczynek do autorefleksji dla każdego nauczyciela akademickiego, do określenie własnego miejsca i roli w tworzeniu paradygmatu tolerancji w kulturze życia akademickiego.
The text constitutes a response and expression of opposition to the concept of reduced discrimination applied at the university, proposed by Professor Piotr Nowak. The author points to the need to seek a new paradigm of tolerance in the culture of academic life, the need for interpersonal decentration, which he sees as the first step for creating a new paradigm of tolerance. Interpersonal decentration is treated as consideration of relations with other people, situations and phenomena, simultaneously from different perspectives, without the subjective deformation of the image of the analyzed phenomena. The text addresses a number of questions that may be valuable contributors to self-reflection for every academic teacher, to define their own place and role in creating a paradigm of tolerance in the culture of academic life.

Prezentowany esej odwołuje się do przemówienia, które Carolyn Ellis wygłosiła z okazji przejścia na emeryturę po kilkudziesięciu latach pracy w Uniwersytecie Południowej Florydy. W wydarzeniu, które odbyło się 25 stycznia 2019 r., brali udział przyjaciele, studenci, a także pracownicy naukowi i władze uczelni. Profesor Ellis opowiedziała kilka historii o swoich początkach na uniwersytecie, ważnych, formujących spotkaniach oraz o współpracy z Arthurem Bochnerem. Tekst, podobnie jak przemówienie, zawiera także wspomnienie o wsparciu, którego doświadczyła, spełnieniu, które znalazła w życiu uniwersyteckim, pasji nauczania płynącej z serca, skupionej w całości na drugiej osobie oraz prowadzonych badaniach, będących istotą pracy na uczelni. Profesor Ellis opisuje również korzyści z uczestnictwa w programie studiów w zakresie jakościowej i ilościowej analizy komunikacji społecznej z uwzględnieniem humanistycznej perspektywy. Tekst kończy się dziesięcioma aforyzmami lub obserwacjami z lekcji wyniesionych z doświadczenia ponad czterech dekad spędzonych na uniwersytecie, wśród których znalazły się zarówno niewypowiedziane wyzwania, jak i wielkie radości oraz momenty szczęścia.
In this essay, I present the talk I gave at the celebration honoring my retirement from University of South Florida (USF). Held on January 25, 2019, this event was attended by an audience of friends, students, and university faculty and administrators. I tell several stories about coming to USF, meeting and collaborating with Art Bochner, and the support I experienced and the fulfillment I found in my university life. Passionate about teaching from the heart to the whole person and doing research that matters, I describe the meaning I derived from participating in an interpretive and qualitative Communication program that focused on the human sciences. I end with 10 aphorisms or observations from lessons learned in my experience of four decades in the university, some of which allude to the unnamed challenges I experienced among the great joys and good fortune of academic life.

The article describes a response from academic communities – both collegial bodies and individuals – to so-called lustration bill. Opponents and supporters of the lustration bill present both formal and legal arguments, and moral ones. The aim of the article is to an adequate depiction of the response from academic communities to the lustration bill.
Artykuł przedstawia reakcję środowisk akademickich na tzw. ustawę lustracyjną, zarówno akademickich ciał kolegialnych, jak i poszczególnych przedstawicieli środowiska uniwersyteckiego. Prezentowana argumentacja – przeciwników i zwolenników ustawy lustracyjnej – ma charakter formalno-prawny oraz moralny. Artykuł stara się wiernie oddać złożony obraz reakcji środowisk akademickich na ustawę lustracyjną.

Transgenerational conflicts, complaints of the representatives of the older generation on the younger one, objections put forward by the latter to the former are phenomena equally common and, one may say, everlasting (even Plato complained about the Athens youth). War emigrants who found their places in the West of Europe right after they finished their active participation in fights, most frequently left their homeland as mature and well-shaped people. They were assumed as the “old” generation. They were accompanied by children and the youth who got their education in the foreign land, started employment, settled families and also took their first steps on the cultural ground. They were assumed as the “young” generation. Taking these names into quotation marks is justified by their large conventionality, their instability and changeability in time. As I will attempt to prove in this text, the line separating the “old” from the “young” did not only refer to their dates of birth and the age line of division did not definitely settle the whole matter. It was so the more that part of the “young” also took active part in fight and after its ending despite the “old’s” expectations did not share their views and convictions. This problem being connected with others such as the relation to the past and history, relations with the homeland, patriotism and relations to Polishness1 is wide and multithread enough that there is no way to present it in its entirety. Thus I am going to focus on its part which seems to me particularly important for understanding socio-mental relations and structures of the second independence emigration. The subject of my reflection will be texts and speeches showing this conflict which appeared in the circle of published in London students’ journals in years 1949-1966 around which the later poets’ group Continents was established. This outline presents the chronological order of the conflict, the evolution of the way of thinking of both sides, the most important points of ignition and most visible differences and divisions revealed in this conflict. Due to richness of materials and problems requiring discussion this text has been divided into two parts. The first part comprises years 1949-1954. At that time the conflict emerged and unusually dynamically it developed leading to a clear difference between emigration generations (as it will be shown in the second part of the outline four stages of the conflict can be distinguished in this period). The second part begins with presenting the events of 1955 when the definite division between the „old” and the „young” happened. It is mainly about the November events in Manchester which can be viewed as the climax of the conflict and which initiated its fall. Discussing it along with the division into two phases (the fifth and sixth) ends with a summary and conclusions concerning the course of the conflict.

Tematyka konferencji Słowotwórstwo i internet okazała się bardzo trafna ze względu na jej aktualność. Autorki omawiają poszczególne referaty uczestników tego wydarzenia naukowego.

Opis:
The article concerns Vilnius Academic Nativity Scenes, which were created in 1921-1926 in the environment of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Vilnius University. Performances were created by both academic teachers and students. Nativity scenes were satirical and divided into two parts: traditional and current. The article presents the silhouettes of the creators of the Nativity Scenes, as well as their influence on the character of the performances. It also depicts the main themes of Nativity Scenes, such as: aspects of academic life, conflicts in the artistic milieu of Vilnius, as well as important political and cultural events. The article aims to present the importance of Academic Nativity Scenes in the Vilnius University milieu, as well as in the cultural life of the city.

Transgenerational conflicts, complaints of the representatives of the older generation on the younger one, objections put forward by the latter to the former are phenomena equally common and, one may say, everlasting (even Plato complained about the Athens youth). War emigrants who found their places in the West of Europe right after they finished their active participation in fights, most frequently left their homeland as mature and well-shaped people. They were assumed as the „old” generation. They were accompanied by children and the youth who got their education in the foreign land, started employment, settled families and also took their first steps on the cultural ground. They were assumed as the „young” generation. Taking these names into quotation marks is justified by their large conventionality, their instability and changeability in time. As I will attempt to prove in this text, the line separating the „old” from the :young” did not only refer to their dates of birth and the age line of division did not definitely settle the whole matter. It was so the more that part of the „young” also took active part in fight and after its ending despite the “old’s” expectations did not share their views and convictions. This problem being connected with others such as the relation to the past and history, relations with the homeland, patriotism and relations to Polishness1 is wide and multithread enough that there is no way to present it in its entirety. Thus I am going to focus on its part which seems to me particularly important for understanding socio-mental relations and structures of the second independence emigration. The subject of my reflection will be texts and speeches showing this conflict which appeared in the circle of published in London students’ journals in years 1949-1966 around which the later poets’ group Continents was established. This outlinepresents the chronological order of the conflict, the evolution of the way of thinking of both sides, the most important points of ignition and most visible differences and divisions revealed in this conflict. Due to richness of materials and problems requiring discussion this text has been divided into two parts. The first part comprises years 1949-1954. At that time the conflict emerged and unusually dynamically it developed leading to a clear difference between emigration generations (as it will be shown in the second part of the outline four stages of the conflict can be distinguished in this period). The second part begins with presenting the events of 1955 when the definite division between the „old” and the „young” happened. It is mainly about the November events in Manchester which can be viewed as the climax of the conflict and which initiatedits fall. Discussing it along with the division into two phases (the fifth and sixth) endswith a summary and conclusions concerning the course of the conflict.
