Like many others Church fathers John Chrysostom considers virginity preferable to marriage. At the same time, being an interpreter of Saint Paul’s doctrine, he repeats that marriage is a splendid God’s mystery (Ephesians 5, 31-33). That is why he explains to the Christian men what kind of women they have to marry in order to become happy husbands, as well as draws Christian wives’ attention to their duties. According to Chrysostom, a man who seeks a wife should follow example of the servant, sent by Abraham back to his homeland to get a bride for his son, Isaac. First of all, he must aim to find a righteous woman. Bride’s wealth, as well as physical beauty are able to make her husband happy only provided that she lives faithfully serving God. Saint John teaches that God expects married Christian women to submit to their husbands, to live a chaste life, to take care of household while the man is about his public business, to be modest in their appearance and manners. Many times he sharply points out women’s vices and faults. On the other hand he holds in high esteem their virtues and sensibility, as well as demands that husbands should love their wives, treat them with respect, be loyal to them. Analyzing female characters pictured by John Chrysostom, we often come across the types well-known through ancient Greek poetry.

Each presidential candidate in modern political campaigns in the United States needs to have a spouse behind their back. The involvement of recent candidates’ spouses like Michelle Obama and Melania Trump provides researchers with a fresh picture of how a future first lady should or should not behave during campaigning. The interesting matter would be in this article to compare those two candidates’ spouses. Their activities and behavior during their first presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2016 will show the differences in Democratic and Republican form of campaigning. The study aims to observe certain regularity in the treatment of spouses during presidential campaigns in the United States. Its goal is to answer what kind of future presidential spousal behavior during campaign is more desirable in order to achieve as many votes as possible. The paper is based on qualitative analysis of already existing data compiled during both elections, as well as critical reading of the literature of the subject. To elaborate, the author will mostly compare the political positions of those two future first ladies – Michelle Obama and Melania Trump – during the mentioned campaigning periods, and also by statistics relating to their presence in media and public appearances.
Każdy kandydat na prezydenta w Stanach Zjednoczonych powinien pokazywać się podczas kampanii wyborczej z żoną u boku. Zaangażowanie pierwszych dam takich jak Michelle Obama czy Melania Trump w kampanie prezydenckie ich mężów daje badaczom współczesny obraz przyszłej pierwszej damy i możliwość badania bardziej lub mniej pożądanych zachowań podczas kampanii wyborczych. Celem niniejszego artykułu będzie porównanie obu wymienionych wyżej żon kandydatów na urząd prezydenta w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Porównanie ich działalności i zachowań podczas pierwszych prezydenckich kampanii ich mężów tj. w 2008 roku i 2016 roku unaoczni różnice w traktowaniu żony kandydata podczas kampanii prezydenckiej w obozie Demokratów i Republikanów. Celem badania jest zaobserwowanie pewnych prawidłowości w sposobie traktowania żon kandydatów na prezydenta podczas kampanii wyborczych, jak również odpowiedź na pytanie czy istnieje bardziej lub mniej pożądane zachowanie „pierwszych żon”, które to przysparza kandydatowi jak najwięcej wyborczych głosów. Artykuł oparty jest na jakościowej analizie istniejących danych zgromadzonych podczas wyborów w 2008 roku oraz w 2016 roku, jak również na krytycznej analizie istniejącej literatury przedmiotu. W celu rozwinięcia powyższych metod autor dokona porównania politycznych pozycji przyszłych pierwszych dam – Michelle Obamy i Melanii Trump podczas wspomnianego okresu kampanii prezydenckich, także poprzez zebranie statystyk obrazujących ich obecność w mediach oraz podczas publicznych wystąpień.

One of the most important biblical texts about marriage are included in Ef 5. This fragment analyzes various aspects of the relationship between husband and wife. According to this, a special attribute of Christian marriage is sacramentality, consisting in participation of spouses, as personal communion, in salvation mystery understood as a deep bond of Christ with Church, thanks to which the marriage of Christians assumes a preternatural dimension. Moreover, Christ`s bond with Church is an example of mutual relations between spouses. A detailed mutual relation of husband and wife is stressed here, and especially the fact of wife`s submission to her husband, that can not be unders- tood as any sort of slavery, but rather as a form of Christian`s calling and the serve to Christ. As Christ is a head of the Church and takes care about the full development of it, especially in salva- tion, the same should be a husband for his wife.

Artykuł przedstawia stanowisko jednego z najwybitniejszych homiletów starożytności chrześcijańskiej w temacie roli kobiety w małżeństwie i rodzinie. W opracowaniu ukazano poglądy Chryzostoma, które wyróżniały go na tle innych ojców Kościoła. W pierwszej części przedstawiono kontekst kulturowy nauczania biskupa Konstantynopola. Ukazano postrzeganie roli kobiety w kulturze antycznej grecko rzymskiej, w judaizmie oraz w nauczaniu św. Pawła z Tarsu. W drugiej części artykułu przedstawiono poglądy Chryzostoma na temat kobiety jako żony i matki. W trzeciej części opracowania ukazano relacje między kobietą i mężczyzną. Celem artykułu było ukazanie wyjątkowości nauczania św. Jana Chryzostoma na temat roli kobiety w rodzinie chrześcijańskiej. Ta wyjątkowość przejawiała się w docenianiu wartości żony i matki jako współodpowiedzialnej za wychowanie dzieci i mającej swój aktywny udział w kształtowaniu chrześcijańskiego charakteru rodziny.
In the article the views of one of the greatest early Christian preachers on the role of women in marriage and the family are portrayed. In this work the views of Chrysostom are discussed, which distinguishes him among other Church fathers. In the frst part of the article the cultural context of the doctrine of the Bishop of Constantinople is shown. It depids how the role of women in the Greco Roman antiquity culture, as well as in Judaism and the doctrine of Paul of Tarsus was considered. In the second part Chrysostomos point of view on the woman as a wife and mother is depicted. In the third part the relationship between woman and man is discussed. The aim of this article is to show the peculiarity of St. John Chrysostom’s views on the role of women in the Christian family. This peculiarity is that the role of the wife and the mother is appreciated and that the woman is seen as responsible for the education of children and that she is actively involved in shaping the Christian character of the family.

Płeć kulturowa oraz wynikające z niej role i relacje rodzinne w znacznym stopniu kształtują życie rodzinne polskich rodzin doświadczających migracji transnarodowych. Tradycyjnie realizowane role genderowe związane z byciem matką i żoną kształtują doświadczenia i postawy życiowe polskich emigrantek w Irlandii, począwszy od decyzji o migracji, poprzez relacje członków rodziny w trakcie separacji, aż po reunifikację rodziny. Próba kontynuacji realizacji tradycyjnej roli w rodzinie pomimo tejże separacji jest wyrazem prób zachowania poczucia kobiecej tożsamości i prowizorycznej władzy kobiet w sferze domowej.
Family gender roles and family relationships influence the lives of Polish transnational families to a great extent. Traditionally adopted gender roles connected with being a mother and wife largely shape the experience and attitudes of Polish female migrants in Ireland: starting with the decision about the migration, through family relations during the separation period, and ending up at the point of reunion. Attempts to continue to perform the traditional role of a mother and wife in the face of the transnational migration is an effort to preserve Polish women’s sense of identity as well as provisional power within their families.

The article analyses the last work by Brian Moore, entitled The Magician’s Wife (English edition: 1997, Polish edition: 2000) as a historical novel. The Belfast-born writer who became a Canadian citizen and died in the US, had an ‘Algerian episode’ in his life. In his last years, most plausibly inspired by the historical source entitled Confidences d’un prestidigitateur and authored by Robert Houdin, Moore created an unofficial version of events which were supposed to have contributed to the final conquest of Algeria by the French. The visit that the recognised French illusionist paid to Algeria was connected with a political mission he’d been assigned. His magic tricks were to convince the local leaders that the French possessed the power that would make them victorious. The essence of Moore’s design was to present these actions from the magician’s wife’s point of view, who – as opposed to her prototype – is something more than just a passive witness.
Artykuł omawia ostatni utwór Briana Moore’a pt. Żona magika (wyd. anglojęz. 1997, wyd. pol. 2000) jako powieść historyczną. Pochodzący z Belfastu pisarz, który otrzymał obywatelstwo kanadyjskie, a zmarł w USA, miał w swej młodości epizod „algierski”. Pod koniec życia, zainspirowany najprawdopodobniej źródłem historycznym pt. Confidences d’un prestidigitateur Roberta Houdina, Moore stworzył w swej powieści nieoficjalną wizję wydarzeń, które miały doprowadzić do ostatecznego opanowania Algierii przez Francję. Pobyt słynnego francuskiego iluzjonisty w Algierii związany był z powierzoną mu misją polityczną. Jego sztuczki miały wzbudzić przekonanie wśród lokalnych przywódców, że Francuzi dysponują mocą, która przyczyni się do ich zwycięstwa. Istotą zamysłu Moore’a było ukazanie tych działań z perspektywy żony magika, która w odróżnieniu od swojego pierwowzoru nie jest tylko bierną obserwatorką.

The division of family responsibilities, which are designed for each household member and harmonious family relationships are one of the most important keynotes of St. John’s Chrysostom preaching. In order to explain this issue he wrote homily on the Epistle to the Ephesians. According to it, the role of father in household is based on following Christ. Husbant’s relationship to his wife, especially respect for her, should be built by analogy to the relationship between Christ and the Church. The author calls the family a “small church”, comparing it to the Church as the Mystical Body. Living of the “small Church” is permeated with prayer and Holy Scripture reading. Firstly husband – the head of the family, performs the following Christian actions: reads inspired texts, strengthens himself by the sacrament of the Eucharist (that is, he takes the Holy Communion). And thanks to that going to church and celebrate the Lord’s Day, are the usual practice of all members of the parva Ecclesia.
Podział obowiązków rodzinnych, które są wyznaczone dla każdego członka rodziny, oraz harmonijne relacje rodzinne są kwestiami kluczowymi w myśli Jana Chryzostoma. Temu zagadnieniu poświęcił on homilie do Listu do Efezjan. Rola ojca w rodzinie wypływa z naśladowania Chrystusa. Jego relacja do żony, zwłaszcza szacunek dla niej, ma być budowana na relacjach Chrystusa do Kościoła. Nazywa rodzinę małym Kościołem, porównując ją do Kościoła jako Ciała Mistycznego. Życie „małego Kościoła” jest przeniknięte modlitwą oraz czytaniem Pisma Świętego. Najpierw mąż – głowa rodziny, wykonuje następujące praktyki chrześcijańskie: czyta teksty natchnione, czerpie siłę z sakramentu Eucharystii (czyli przystępuje do Komunii Świętej). Chodzenie do kościoła oraz świętowanie Dnia Pańskiego pozostają zwykłą praktyką wszystkich członków parva Ecclesia.
