$^∞$-vectors
Opis:
The following two questions as well as their relationship are studied: (i) Is a closed linear operator in a Banach space bounded if its $^∞$-vectors coincide with analytic (or semianalytic) ones? (ii) When are the domains of two successive powers of the operator in question equal? The affirmative answer to the first question is established in case of paranormal operators. All these investigations are illustrated in the context of weighted shifts.

Let U, V be two symmetric convex bodies in $ℝ^n$ and |U|, |V| their n-dimensional volumes. It is proved that there exist vectors $u_1,...,u_n ∈ U$ such that, for each choice of signs $ε_1,...,ε_n = ± 1$, one has $ε_1 u_1 + ... + ε_n u_n ∉ rV$ where $r = (2πe^2)^{-1/2} n^{1/2}(|U|/|V|)^{1/n}$. Hence it is deduced that if a metrizable locally convex space is not nuclear, then it contains a null sequence $(u_n)$ such that the series $∑_{n = 1}^∞ ε_n u_{π(n)}$ is divergent for any choice of signs $ε_n = ± 1$ and any permutation π of indices.

Opis:
Manipulation of angiogenesis in vivo is an example of successful gene therapy strategies. Overexpression of angiogenic genes like VEGF, FGF or PDGF causes new vessel formation and improves the clinical state of patients. Gene therapy is a very promising procedure but requires large amounts of pharmaceutical-grade plasmid DNA. In this regard we have constructed a bicistronic plasmid DNA vector encoding two proangiogenic factors, VEGF165 and FGF-2. The construct (pVIF) contains the internal ribosome entry site (IRES) of the encephalomyocarditis virus (ECMV) which permits both genes to be translated from a single bicistronic mRNA. The IRES sequence allows for a high efficiency of gene expression in vivo. The pVIF vector was characterized in vitro and in vivo. In vivo angiogenesis studies showed that the bicistronic vector encoding two proangiogenic factors induces the formation of new vessels significantly more than pVEGF165 or pFGF-2 alone. In our opinion the combined proangiogenic approach with VEGF165 and FGF-2 is more powerful and efficient than single gene therapy. We also postulate that IRES sequence can serve as a useful device improving efficiency of gene therapy.

In this paper, numerous examples will be illustrated as principles of applying the sound intensity measurements to practical problems at the noise abatement on ships and offshore constructions. The paper presents the results of transmission loss measurements together with flanking transmission for ship bulkheads and partitions with doors and windows. Investigations carried out with sound intensity measurement techniques will be compared against those made by classical methods. Finally for a few examples, the graphic presentation of spatial distribution of sound intensity vectors risen close to vibrating ship cabin partitions and inside the cabin will be shown in 2D and 3D graphical form. As a result, a two-dimensional acoustic wave flow map of time-averaged active intensity vectors propagated along curved streamlines and a vector perpendicular to measured plane are graphically illustrated. The technique of acoustic vectors decomposition of sound fields described, can enrich the knowledge of the mechanism of acoustic energy flux through ship partitions.

Opis:
The paper presents an innovative data classification approach based on parallel computing performed on a GPGPU (General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit). The results shown in this paper were obtained in the course of a European Commission-funded project: “Research on large-scale storage, sharing and processing of spatial laser data”, which concentrated on LIDAR data storage and sharing via databases and the application of parallel computing using nVidia CUDA technology. The paper describes the general requirements of nVidia CUDA technology application in massive LiDAR data processing. The studied point cloud data structure fulfills these requirements in most potential cases. A unique organization of the processing procedure is necessary. An innovative approach based on rapid parallel computing and analysis of each point’s normal vector to examine point cloud geometry within a classification process is described in this paper. The presented algorithm called LiMON classifies points into basic classes defined in LAS format: ground, buildings, vegetation, low points. The specific stages of the classification process are presented. The efficiency and correctness of LiMON were compared with popular program called Terrascan. The correctness of the results was tested in quantitive and qualitative ways. The test of quality was executed on specific objects, that are usually difficult for classification algorithms. The quantitive test used various environment types: forest, agricultural area, village, town. Reference clouds were obtained via two different methods: (1) automatic classification using Terrascan, (2) manually corrected clouds classified by Terrascan. The following coefficients for quantitive testing of classification correctness were calculated: Type 1 Error, Type 2 Error, Kappa, Total Error. The results shown in the paper present the use of parallel computing on a GPGPU as an attractive route for point cloud data processing.

Opis:
In the majority of potential applications gene therapy will require an effective transfer of a transgene in vivo resulting in high-level and long-term transgene expression, all in the absence of significant toxicity or inflammatory responses. The most efficient vehicles for delivery of foreign genes to the target tissues are modified adenoviruses. Adenoviral vectors of the first generation, despite the high infection efficacy, have an essential drawback: they induce strong immune response, which leads to short term expression of the transgene, and limits their usefulness in clinical trials. In contrast, helper-dependent adenoviral vectors (HdAd) lacking all viral coding sequences display only minimal immunogenicity and negligible side-effects, allowing for long-term transgene expression. Thus, HdAd vehicles have become the carrier of choice for adenoviral vector-mediated experimental gene therapy, effectively used in animal models for delivery of transgenes into the liver, skeletal muscle, myocardium or brain. Strong and long-lasting expression of therapeutic genes has allowed for successful treatment of dyslipidemias, muscular dystrophy, obesity, hemophilia, and diabetes. Additionally, the large cloning capacity of HdAd, up to 37 kb, facilitates the use of physiologically regulated, endogenous promoters, instead of artificial viral promoter sequences. This enables also generation of the single vectors expressing multiple genes, which can be potentially useful for treatment of polygenic diseases. In this review we characterize the basic features of HdAd vectors and describe some of their experimental and potential clinical applications.

In this paper, we present the advantage of the ability of FPGAs to perform various computationally complex calculations using deep pipelining and parallelism. We propose an architecture that consists of many small stream processing blocks. The designed framework maintains proper data movement and synchronization. The architecture can be easily adapted to be implemented in FPGA devices of a various size and cost - from small SoC devices to high-end PCIe accelerator cards. It is capable to perform a selected operation on a sparse data that are loaded as the stream of vectors. As an example application, we have implemented the cosine similarity measure for the text similarity calculations that uses the TF-IDF weighting scheme. The presented example application calculates the similarity of texts from the set of input documents to documents from the large database. The scheme is used to find the most similar documents. The proposed design can decrease the service time of search queries in computer centers while reducing power consumption.

Ritz vectors have similar character as modal vectors. Their advantage with respect to modal vectors is a fact, that less number of them is required to estimate object response. Numerical analysis proofed also, that Ritz vectors, called sometimes Lanchos vectors, have better ability to detect damage then modal vectors. In the paper short overview of modal model based damage detection methods is presented. Definition of Ritz vectors and some methods of their estimation are shown. The paper also consists a comparison of effectiveness in detection of damage, simulated on laboratory stand, both the Ritz and the modal vectors.

This report describes gene transfer in vitro as well as in vivo using cetylated low-molecular mass (600 Da) polyethylenimine (28% of amine groups substituted with cetyl moieties), termed CT-PEI. This compound is hydrophobic and has to be incorporated into liposomes in order to be suitable for gene transfer studies. Serum-induced plasmid DNA degradation assay demonstrated that CT-PEI-containing liposomal carriers could protect complexed DNA (probably via condensation). In vitro luciferase gene expression achieved using medium supplemented with 10% serum was comparable to that achieved in serum-reduced medium and was highest for CT-PEI/cholesterol liposomes, followed by CT-PEI/dioleoylphosphatidylcholine liposomes and PEI 600 Da (uncetylated) carrier. In vivo systemic transfer into mice was most efficient when liposome formulations contained CT-PEI and cholesterol. Higher luciferase expression was then observed in lungs than in liver. In conclusion: liposomes containing cetylated polyethylenimine and cholesterol are a suitable vehicle for investigating systemic plasmid DNA transfer into lungs.

A new system for selection of reference instances, which is called the EkP system (Exactly k Prototypes), has been introduced by us recently. In this paper we study suitability of the EkP method for training data reduction on seventeen datasets. As the underlaying classifier the well known IB1 system (1-Nearest Neighbor classifier) has been chosen. We compare generalization ability of our method to performance of IB1 trained on the entire training data and performance of LVQ, Learning Vector Quantization, for which the same number of codebooks has been chosen as the number of prototypes selected by the EkP system. The comparison indicates that even with only a few prototypes which have been chosen by the EkP method on nearly all seventeen datasets statistically indistinguishable results from those given by the IB1 system have been obtained. On many datasets generalization ability of the EkP method has been higher than the one attained with LVQ.

Relatively successful elsewhere, gene delivery aimed at the vasculature and kidney has made very little progress. In the kidney, the hurdles are related to the unique structure–function relationships of this organ and in the blood vessels to a variety of, mostly endothelial, factors making the delivery of transgenes very difficult. Among gene-therapeutic approaches, most viral gene delivery systems utilized to date have shown significant practical and safety-related limitations due to the level and duration of recombinant transgene expression as well as their induction of a significant host immune response to vector proteins. Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors appear to offer a vehicle for safe, long-term transgene expression. rAAV-based vectors are characterized by a relative non-immunogenicity and the absence of viral coding sequences. Furthermore, they allow for establishment of long-term latency without deleterious effects on the host cell. This brief review addresses problems related to transgene-delivery to kidney and vasculature with particular attention given to rAAV vectors. The potential for gene therapy as a strategy for selected renal and vascular diseases is also discussed.

Prezentowane w pracy badania dotyczą segmentacji obrazów metodą wektorów wspierających (ang. Support Vector Machine - SVM).
The paper presents preliminary implementation results of image segmentation for the SVM (Support Vector Machine) algorithm. SVM is a dedicated mathematical formula which allows extracting selective objects from an input picture and assign them to an appropriate class. Consequently, a black and white images reflecting occurrence of the desired feature are derived from an original picture fed into the classifier. This work is primarily focused on the FPGA implementation aspects of the algorithm as well as on comparison of the hardware and software performance. A human skin classifier was used as an example and implemented both in AMD AthlonII P320 Dual-Core2.10 GHz and Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA. It is worth emphasizing that the critical hardware components were designed using HDL, whereas the less demanding standard ones such as communication interfaces, FIFO, FSMs were implemented in HLL (High Level Language). Such an approach allowed both shortening the design time and preserving high performance of the hardware classification module. This work is a part of the Synat project embracing several initiatives aiming at creation of a repository of images to which are to be assigned descriptive name according to their contents. Such a database of tagged images will significantly reduce the search time, since only picture tags will be processed instead of images, so the process will involve simple string operations rather than image recognition. The project is a huge challenge due to an immense volume of data collected over the past years denoted today as the Internet resources. Therefore, the core part of the undertaking is to design andimplement a classification system which should be both reliable and fast. In order to achieve the high performance of a search engine, the most computationally intensive operations are to be ported to hardware.
