Opis:
Omówiono podmiotowe i przedmiotowe mechanizmy biorące udział w podtrzymywaniu integracji tożsamości.
Many contemporary theorists have proposed that the self is not unitary but multifaceted, composed of aspects, subselves, or subpersonalities. Individuals differ in the number of their subselves and their self-complexity. The paper introduces the theories which take into account the pluralism of both the self-as-known and the self-as-knower. These theories come mostly from social psychologists, personality psychologists and psychotherapists. The most commonly proposed types of self-subsystems are discussed. The paper also describes possible processes through which differentiated self-conceptualizations are organized and integrated.

The main aim of this article is to present a descriptive social-cognitive model of the adaptive self-concept (ASC) which integrates knowledge concerning the relationship between two aspects of the self—self-awareness and self-knowledge—and optimal functioning. We propose that adaptive self-awareness is moderately frequent, non-ruminative, focused on inner states, and motivated by curiosity. Adaptive self-knowledge is defined as accurate, complex, integrated and consisting of easily accessible self-beliefs, both abstract and concrete. The broader context for the ASC model is discussed, including its regulatory and interpersonal functions and factors which influence ASC development. The limitations of the model are discussed and suggestions are made for future investigations. Dancing not only improves our development, but also changes us. It changes our attitude to many issues. It influences our temperament thus transforming the perception of our body. The chief aim of this research was to prove that dancing classes are a form of work on reaching self-awareness and that they have therapeutic properties. The subjects were female participants of all kinds of dancing classes, conducted in various schools by different instructors. 51 females, aged 20–60 years old voluntarily participated in a diagnostic survey. Dancing class participants, often unknowingly, undergo a certain metamorphosis. Indisputably, dancing has therapeutic influence; it allows to create and discover hitherto unknown recesses of ourselves. Dancing classes considerably diminish our low self-esteem and distorted perception of our body. The analysis of research shows that behavior of women who participated in dancing class change so that they can more effectively fulfill their life aims.

The article presents an attempt at an empirical analysis of the relation between self-concept differentiation and the sense of identity. Patricia Linville’s concept of self-complexity and a multidimensional approach to the sense of identity have been used. The hypothesized relations of these structural characteristics of personality with self-esteem have been analyzed as well. Research results indicate no connections of self-complexity with the sense of consistency, stability, separateness, accessibility of identity content, or self-esteem. However, cluster analysis revealed the presence of three groups with characteristic combinations of identity and self-complexity dimensions as well as different self-esteem levels. The psychological significance of these differences is discussed.

Opis:
The present study explores the connection between the actual/ideal (A/I) and actual/ought (A/O) self-discrepancies and negative emotional states such as stress, anxiety and depression. Moreover, it seeks to understand the effects of potentially intervening variables, self-control //and self-consciousness, on the affect-discrepancy relationship. 638 participants (60% female, aged 18-55) participated in the study. They filled out questionnaires measuring actual/ideal self-discrepancy, actual/ought self-discrepancy, self-control, private/public self-consciousness and psychological distress (depression, anxiety and stress; DAS). The results revealed that both, A/O and A/I self-discrepancies, are positively associated with DAS but do not have a predictive value for them. However, depression, anxiety and stress are significantly predicted by low self-control and high personal self-consciousness. Also, the study confirms that self-control and self-consciousness moderate affect-discrepancy relationship: self-control is a significant moderator of the relationships between (1) A/I and A/O self-discrepancy and depression and (2) A/I and A/O self-discrepancy and stress. Also, public self-consciousness moderates the relationship between A/O self-discrepancy and stress. In this respect those who have high self-control and high self-consciousness are less likely to experience negative emotional reactions related to the discrepant self-constructs.

Internal sensations, especially organic ones, are not only the foundation of our consciousness of life and self but also an integral part of each feeling. This is probably the origin of the genuine affinity between feelings and consciousness of life and self, an affinity that manifests itself even in speech. Indeed, the ex- pression “sense of self” is more natural than saying “representing” or even “im- agining one’s self”. It is also easier and neater to talk in French about “sentiment du moi” than “representation du moi”; the expression “das Ichgefühl” is less grating than “die Ichvorstellung”, the latter being rather used to mean the con- ceived self as opposed to the self of which one is conscious all the time. The self is not a feeling, however, if only because there are no feelings that would be equally constant or, to be more precise, that would recur with equal constancy. Even so, we can say it is closer to emotive states than to any representation or mental image. [...]

A young person's perception of his past, present, and future life is shaped during his adolescence. The potential/prospective self of an adolescent includes his ideas and plans concerning his future life and, therefore, constitutes an important source of his motives for activity and development. This paper presents results of its author's own research on the ways in which adolescents with visual disability receiving special education in the Silesian Voivodship perceive their own future lives. The theoretical part of the paper contains an analysis of the concept of self-perception and related concepts. Special attention is paid to defining different kinds of self-perception, analyzing their functions, and indicating factors that determine their development during adolescence. An overview of selected pieces of research on the self-image of the blind and visually impaired people allowed a description of the influence of self-perception on social and personal functioning of adolescents with visual disability.

Purpose: To evaluate the marital relationships, the thoughts about femininity and sexual identity, and the self-evaluation and changes in the self-esteem of women having a hysterectomy operation, during the period of both before and after surgery. Material and methods: This study was designed according to the principles of the comparative descriptive research carried out between 15 January 2013 – 15 June 2014 at Ondokuz Mayis University, Faculty of Medicine Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The power sample size was determined to be 72. The research included 88 contactable women who were admitted to the clinic at the time of the research, who had agreed to participate in the study, and who lived in the province where the research was conducted (as the final tests were done via home visits). A questionnaire form, the Coopersmith Self Esteem Scale, and the Social Comparison Scale were used in the collection of the data. Descriptive statistics and x2 and Paired t tests were used in the data analysis. Results: Changes in the self-esteem of women having a hysterectomy were examined before surgery, one week after surgery, and three months after surgery; while there weren’t any changes in self-esteem one week after surgery, a significant decrease in the women’s self-esteem was discovered three months after surgery (p<0.01). Conclusion: It was discovered that a change in self-evaluation and self-esteem occurs after hysterectomy surgery in women.

The relations of content of self-concept to self-esteem may reflect the role of different factors in developing self-esteem. On the basis of theories describing sources of self-esteem, we distinguished four domains of self-beliefs: agency, morality, strength and energy to act, and acceptance by others, which we hypothesized to be related to self-esteem. In two studies, involving 411 university students, the relationship between self-esteem and self-concept was examined. The results confirmed relative independence of these four domains. Self-evaluation of agency was the strongest predictor of selfesteem, followed by self-evaluation of strength and energy to act, and self-evaluation of acceptance by others. Selfevaluation regarding morality turned out to have either no or negative relationship with self-esteem. The results supported the theories assuming that either perception of one’s own agency or acceptance by others are sources of self-esteem.

Opis:
The purpose of the present study was to adapt the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS; Neff, 2003) into Polish, to examine its validity and reliability, and to determine population norms for this tool. The study involved 604 adults (aged 18–85 years, 278 women and 326 men), constituting a representative sample of the Polish population in terms of gender, age, and place of residence. The adaptation procedure was carried out according to the rules of translation, demonstrating the fidelity of the translation of the original version of the questionnaire. The reliability of the measurement was tested using Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency method and test–retest method. The validity was assessed by analyzing correlation coefficients between SCS scores and the intensity of mindfulness (understood as a trait), resilience, empathic sensitivity with its subscales of perspective taking, personal distress and emphatic concern, and the level of depression and anxiety. Measurement stability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients applied to two consecutive measurements. The factor structure was verified using confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that the SCS in the Polish version has good psychometric properties, and the emerged factor structure indicates that the best fit and specification had a model with two general factors of CS (compassionate self-responding) and RUS (reduced uncompassionate self-responding) and three specific factors: self-kindness, shared humanity, and mindfulness.

Opis:
Theory and research have both characterized self-control as a vital human strength. Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) Self-Control Scale (SCS) is a 36-item self-report questionnaire that assess individual differences in multiple aspects of self-control. The scale is now considered the preeminent measure of self-control in social and psychological research. This article presents studies that evaluated: (a) the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the SCS, and (b) whether higher SCS scores correlated with positive outcomes in Poland. A total of 441 Polish university students took part in the studies. Psychometrically, the Polish SCS proved to be reasonably sound, with good internal consistency (α = .89). Correlations with criteria measures showed that both full and brief selfcontrol scores were positively related to self-esteem, perspective taking, and guilt-proneness, while negatively related to personal distress, proneness to shame, externalization, and unconcern. High self-control was also associated with being conscientious, emotionally stable, and open. It is concluded that the Polish SCS offers a viable option for assessing trait self-control and for studying its relationship with a broad spectrum of psychological and social variables.

Opis:
The article is a theoretical review of former and actual conceptions of personal identity that after Seymour Epstein (1991) may be concerned from two perspectives: (1) the subjective and (2) the objective. The first one refers to affective manner of self-experiencing and displays in identity senses, such as – for example – sense of self-continuity, sense of distinctiveness from other people, or sense of self-unity (that are more characteristic for traditional identity) and sense of self-openness, sense of inner variability, sense of self-changeability (that are more characteristic for so called fluid identity). The literature gives many elements of subjective identity and one of the aims of this article is to gather these different elements and to propose some kind of grouping them depending on socio-cultural context of individual’s living. The propose of grouping of identity senses is hypothetical and demands empirical verification. In the article the second, objective perspective of personal identity is also presented, and as a conclusion there is a postulate to integrate in research on identity these two perspectives, especially in a context of contemporary world that is very varied, complex and dynamic.
