Opis:
The main aim of this article is to present a descriptive social-cognitive model of the adaptive self-concept (ASC) which integrates knowledge concerning the relationship between two aspects of the self—self-awareness and self-knowledge—and optimal functioning. We propose that adaptive self-awareness is moderately frequent, non-ruminative, focused on inner states, and motivated by curiosity. Adaptive self-knowledge is defined as accurate, complex, integrated and consisting of easily accessible self-beliefs, both abstract and concrete. The broader context for the ASC model is discussed, including its regulatory and interpersonal functions and factors which influence ASC development. The limitations of the model are discussed and suggestions are made for future investigations. Funding Information: This research was supported by a grant from the National Science Centre (NSC; 2015/19/B/HS6/02216).

Dancing not only improves our development, but also changes us. It changes our attitude to many issues. It influences our temperament thus transforming the perception of our body. The chief aim of this research was to prove that dancing classes are a form of work on reaching self-awareness and that they have therapeutic properties. The subjects were female participants of all kinds of dancing classes, conducted in various schools by different instructors. 51 females, aged 20–60 years old voluntarily participated in a diagnostic survey. Dancing class participants, often unknowingly, undergo a certain metamorphosis. Indisputably, dancing has therapeutic influence; it allows to create and discover hitherto unknown recesses of ourselves. Dancing classes considerably diminish our low self-esteem and distorted perception of our body. The analysis of research shows that behavior of women who participated in dancing class change so that they can more effectively fulfill their life aims.

The article presents an attempt at an empirical analysis of the relation between self-concept differentiation and the sense of identity. Patricia Linville’s concept of self-complexity and a multidimensional approach to the sense of identity have been used. The hypothesized relations of these structural characteristics of personality with self-esteem have been analyzed as well. Research results indicate no connections of self-complexity with the sense of consistency, stability, separateness, accessibility of identity content, or self-esteem. However, cluster analysis revealed the presence of three groups with characteristic combinations of identity and self-complexity dimensions as well as different self-esteem levels. The psychological significance of these differences is discussed.

The present study explores the connection between the actual/ideal (A/I) and actual/ought (A/O) self-discrepancies and negative emotional states such as stress, anxiety and depression. Moreover, it seeks to understand the effects of potentially intervening variables, self-control //and self-consciousness, on the affect-discrepancy relationship. 638 participants (60% female, aged 18-55) participated in the study. They filled out questionnaires measuring actual/ideal self-discrepancy, actual/ought self-discrepancy, self-control, private/public self-consciousness and psychological distress (depression, anxiety and stress; DAS). The results revealed that both, A/O and A/I self-discrepancies, are positively associated with DAS but do not have a predictive value for them. However, depression, anxiety and stress are significantly predicted by low self-control and high personal self-consciousness. Also, the study confirms that self-control and self-consciousness moderate affect-discrepancy relationship: self-control is a significant moderator of the relationships between (1) A/I and A/O self-discrepancy and depression and (2) A/I and A/O self-discrepancy and stress. Also, public self-consciousness moderates the relationship between A/O self-discrepancy and stress. In this respect those who have high self-control and high self-consciousness are less likely to experience negative emotional reactions related to the discrepant self-constructs.

Internal sensations, especially organic ones, are not only the foundation of our consciousness of life and self but also an integral part of each feeling. This is probably the origin of the genuine affinity between feelings and consciousness of life and self, an affinity that manifests itself even in speech. Indeed, the ex- pression “sense of self” is more natural than saying “representing” or even “im- agining one’s self”. It is also easier and neater to talk in French about “sentiment du moi” than “representation du moi”; the expression “das Ichgefühl” is less grating than “die Ichvorstellung”, the latter being rather used to mean the con- ceived self as opposed to the self of which one is conscious all the time. The self is not a feeling, however, if only because there are no feelings that would be equally constant or, to be more precise, that would recur with equal constancy. Even so, we can say it is closer to emotive states than to any representation or mental image. [...]

A young person's perception of his past, present, and future life is shaped during his adolescence. The potential/prospective self of an adolescent includes his ideas and plans concerning his future life and, therefore, constitutes an important source of his motives for activity and development. This paper presents results of its author's own research on the ways in which adolescents with visual disability receiving special education in the Silesian Voivodship perceive their own future lives. The theoretical part of the paper contains an analysis of the concept of self-perception and related concepts. Special attention is paid to defining different kinds of self-perception, analyzing their functions, and indicating factors that determine their development during adolescence. An overview of selected pieces of research on the self-image of the blind and visually impaired people allowed a description of the influence of self-perception on social and personal functioning of adolescents with visual disability.

Purpose: To evaluate the marital relationships, the thoughts about femininity and sexual identity, and the self-evaluation and changes in the self-esteem of women having a hysterectomy operation, during the period of both before and after surgery. Material and methods: This study was designed according to the principles of the comparative descriptive research carried out between 15 January 2013 – 15 June 2014 at Ondokuz Mayis University, Faculty of Medicine Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The power sample size was determined to be 72. The research included 88 contactable women who were admitted to the clinic at the time of the research, who had agreed to participate in the study, and who lived in the province where the research was conducted (as the final tests were done via home visits). A questionnaire form, the Coopersmith Self Esteem Scale, and the Social Comparison Scale were used in the collection of the data. Descriptive statistics and x2 and Paired t tests were used in the data analysis. Results: Changes in the self-esteem of women having a hysterectomy were examined before surgery, one week after surgery, and three months after surgery; while there weren’t any changes in self-esteem one week after surgery, a significant decrease in the women’s self-esteem was discovered three months after surgery (p<0.01). Conclusion: It was discovered that a change in self-evaluation and self-esteem occurs after hysterectomy surgery in women.

The relations of content of self-concept to self-esteem may reflect the role of different factors in developing self-esteem. On the basis of theories describing sources of self-esteem, we distinguished four domains of self-beliefs: agency, morality, strength and energy to act, and acceptance by others, which we hypothesized to be related to self-esteem. In two studies, involving 411 university students, the relationship between self-esteem and self-concept was examined. The results confirmed relative independence of these four domains. Self-evaluation of agency was the strongest predictor of selfesteem, followed by self-evaluation of strength and energy to act, and self-evaluation of acceptance by others. Selfevaluation regarding morality turned out to have either no or negative relationship with self-esteem. The results supported the theories assuming that either perception of one’s own agency or acceptance by others are sources of self-esteem.

The purpose of the present study was to adapt the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS; Neff, 2003) into Polish, to examine its validity and reliability, and to determine population norms for this tool. The study involved 604 adults (aged 18–85 years, 278 women and 326 men), constituting a representative sample of the Polish population in terms of gender, age, and place of residence. The adaptation procedure was carried out according to the rules of translation, demonstrating the fidelity of the translation of the original version of the questionnaire. The reliability of the measurement was tested using Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency method and test–retest method. The validity was assessed by analyzing correlation coefficients between SCS scores and the intensity of mindfulness (understood as a trait), resilience, empathic sensitivity with its subscales of perspective taking, personal distress and emphatic concern, and the level of depression and anxiety. Measurement stability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients applied to two consecutive measurements. The factor structure was verified using confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that the SCS in the Polish version has good psychometric properties, and the emerged factor structure indicates that the best fit and specification had a model with two general factors of CS (compassionate self-responding) and RUS (reduced uncompassionate self-responding) and three specific factors: self-kindness, shared humanity, and mindfulness.

The article is a theoretical review of former and actual conceptions of personal identity that after Seymour Epstein (1991) may be concerned from two perspectives: (1) the subjective and (2) the objective. The first one refers to affective manner of self-experiencing and displays in identity senses, such as – for example – sense of self-continuity, sense of distinctiveness from other people, or sense of self-unity (that are more characteristic for traditional identity) and sense of self-openness, sense of inner variability, sense of self-changeability (that are more characteristic for so called fluid identity). The literature gives many elements of subjective identity and one of the aims of this article is to gather these different elements and to propose some kind of grouping them depending on socio-cultural context of individual’s living. The propose of grouping of identity senses is hypothetical and demands empirical verification. In the article the second, objective perspective of personal identity is also presented, and as a conclusion there is a postulate to integrate in research on identity these two perspectives, especially in a context of contemporary world that is very varied, complex and dynamic.

The tool of the research is a questionnaire developed for this purpose; the research sample is a group of randomly selected high-school pupils from schools over the north-west part of Romania. The results show that only one third of the respondents think that mathematics is useful in everyday life and their future career; a very low percentage of the pupils set goals for learning mathematics; about a quarter of the respondents analyze correctly the task and have a correct task difficulty perception; the pupils’ self-efficacy and self-control is low, but they have a high self-judgement level. Most of the pupils are aware that there is a strong relation between the time they spend with mathematics and their results. There is a strong correlation between the pupils’ mathematical results and their interest to study mathematics, their task analysis and self-control skills, and their task difficulty perception.

Theory and research have both characterized self-control as a vital human strength. Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) Self-Control Scale (SCS) is a 36-item self-report questionnaire that assess individual differences in multiple aspects of self-control. The scale is now considered the preeminent measure of self-control in social and psychological research. This article presents studies that evaluated: (a) the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the SCS, and (b) whether higher SCS scores correlated with positive outcomes in Poland. A total of 441 Polish university students took part in the studies. Psychometrically, the Polish SCS proved to be reasonably sound, with good internal consistency (α = .89). Correlations with criteria measures showed that both full and brief selfcontrol scores were positively related to self-esteem, perspective taking, and guilt-proneness, while negatively related to personal distress, proneness to shame, externalization, and unconcern. High self-control was also associated with being conscientious, emotionally stable, and open. It is concluded that the Polish SCS offers a viable option for assessing trait self-control and for studying its relationship with a broad spectrum of psychological and social variables.

We examined the influence of identity fusion and status of evaluator on willingness to fight for one’s group after group-descriptive or not group-descriptive feedback. The valence of evaluative information was varied as well: feedback either support negative group-stereotype (negative but descriptive condition) or contradict negative group-stereotype (positive but not descriptive condition). In two studies (N=208 & N=119) we partially replicated previous findings on self-verification. Individuals fused with one’s group were more prone than non fused to fight for group members after receiving, challenging, not group-describing feedback, but only when evaluator’s status was high. When the evaluator’ status was low, fused participants (vs. non fused) engaged in self-enhancement strategies: that is they endorse radical behavior after negative, even if group-describing, feedback. We discuss the importance of identity fusion and evaluator’s status for determining when self-enhancement and self-verification will and will not be evoke.

Poszukiwanie drogi spełnienia u każdej jednostki przebiega inaczej i dotyczy różnych aspektów życia. Przeprowadzone analizy dały podstawę do sformułowania dwóch wniosków.
The search for the way of fulfilment in each individual is different and concerns different aspects of life. A passion may be one of the paths to realizing one’s development potential. The analyses undertaken in the text were aimed at identifying categories common to passion and self-creation and justifying the thesis that the realization of passion can be perceived as self-creation activity. Passion and self-creation were characterised, and then the categories common to them were distinguished; i.e. development, values, creativity, and transgression. Based on the analyses conducted, two conclusions were formulated. The first is that passion can be one of the ways of self-creation. The second conclusion shows that passion can give rise to the subject’s self-creative aspirations. The considerations ended with the conclusion that the process of realizing a harmonious passion, in the perspective of an individual’s self-realization, can be described as a self-creative activity.

Opis:
Over the last forty years, since Bandura (1977) introduced the concept of self-efficacy, there have been a constantly growing number of research publications using this concept. Its early development resulted in the creation of a new construct of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) proposed for the first time by (Chen et al. 1998). Since then, many different groups of research concerning ESE have emerged - one of them is the study of ESE of students. With regard to this particular group, a recent tendency to study ESE in a pre-post setting can be noticed i.a. Karlsson, Moberg (2013), Shinnar, Hsu, Powell (2014), Ismail, Zain, Zulihar (2015). Due to the increasing interest in entrepreneurial self-efficacy research and the need to fill the gap in the literature with regard to European post-communist countries (and particularly – Poland) (Drnovsek, Wincent, Cardon, 2010), in this paper we present a brief overview of ESE research and pose the question whether ESE of Polish students can serve as an early predictor of their subsequent entrepreneurial activities, potentially leading them to nascent entrepreneurship. The research material was collected from the SEAS (Survey on Entrepreneurial Attitudes of Students) Project carried out at the Faculty of Management and Economics, Gdańsk University of Technology. The research sample was composed of 72 students - ESE was measured in a pre-post setting using a single item based on a five-point Likert scale. One of the research conclusions is that ESE manifested by student-beginners seems to influence their later entrepreneurial behavior in a statistically significant way - potentially making ESE a valuable early predictor of future entrepreneurial activities. In the concluding part of the study, limitations are discussed and future study developments are indicated.

The article analyzes peculiarities of students’ self-attitudes in the context of self-determination of their personal development. Self-attitude is defined as a poly-modal emotional-estimative system based on the principle of a dynamic hierarchy and acting as one of the structural units of a person’s dispositional core and a component of the structure of self-consciousness. Self-attitude expresses peculiarities of an individual’s attitude to oneself and provides centring of one’s inner space and formation of the semantic vector of one’s life path. Positive self-attitude along with personal aspirations and prospects, personal autonomy, self-efficacy is an indicator of a self-determined individual. The used questionnaire on self-attitude developed by V.V. Stolin, S.R. Pantileev allowed us to identify three levels of self-attitude according to the degree of its generalization: general self-attitude; self-attitude differentiated by self-regard, auto-sympathy, self-interest and expected attitude of others; the level of concrete actions (readiness for them) regarding Self. The analyses of students’ self-attitude has shown that the respondents are characterized by high indicators of general self-attitude and high and average lower-level indicators. The students with high and low self-determination have different expressiveness of the self-attitude components.

This paper presents a validation study of a new questionnaire of self-control as an individual trait. The questionnaire has two parallel versions, one based on self-reports (AS-36) and another one based on informant reports (AS-36-3). Each version consists of three subscales, called Inhibition (12 items), Switching (12 items), and Goal Monitoring (12 items). Eight samples of participants (N = 935 altogether) took part in the validation study. Both versions obtained satisfactory indices of internal consistency, assessed with Cronbach’s alpha and split-half coefficients. Selfcontrol assessed with this scale proved to be entirely independent of general intelligence. However, AS-36 and AS-36-3 scores tended to correlate with other self-report measures of trait self control, such as Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) self-control scale. We conclude that AS-36 is a valid and reliable tool, suitable for assessment of self-control in both research and diagnostic settings.

The paper addresses the contexts of pedeutology, incidentally revealed in the literature, considering personal development as an important educational element preparing for the role of a teacher. Pedagogy is a praxeological science, linked to continuous development and inspiration search, the acquisition of new theoretical knowledge and methodological skills, supplemented with the development of interpersonal competences and improvement of self-knowledge. Hence, an important element of the academic training of future teachers is personal development classes. It is also necessary to develop a curriculum of courses with the widest possible range of optional workshop classes, which help students build their self-knowledge, recognise and discover their individual areas of self-fulfilment, and develop self-creation competences. The analyses of the narratives of pre-school education students and early childhood pedagogy of the University of Silesia in Katowice show the relevance and efficiency of self-improvement through participation in workshops based on dance and movement, and in other expressive activities, which are indeed an integral part of academic education.

The article focuses on the issue of self-regard connected with behavioural manifesta-tions of personality. By means of comparative, correlation and factorial analysis it is proven that positive self-regard is accompanied by a decreasing level of suicidal risk as well as by creativity growth. Self-acceptance, positive attitude towards oneself ensures a harmonious existence and a high level of personality self-identifi cation. Higher level of self-regard is revealed in younger age categories where it is based on optimistic life prospects and a creative approach to solving life problems. Creativity combined with self-liking becomes a certain ability that helps overcome crisis situations and facilitates removal of personal peculiarities connected with proneness to suicide. Among the creative skills and abilities foregrounded are creative approach, creative imagination and creative intuition.

The effects of radical innovations in the economy and the social sphere cause changes in socio-professional relationship and the transformation of a work man. The motto of work humanization, raising ethical aspects protecting the subjectivity of its producers – in global capitalism – carries many risks as well as raises justified doubts. The model of active life, the syndrome of well-being, the pressure on self-improvement, the ability of self-managing are the new ideologies that convert a human into a product put up for sale, ”a product” that will soon become outdated unless it is subjected to continuous updating. The acceptance of such a lifestyle and work is supposed to foster the personal human market value. The process of blurring the differences between life and work, the professional and private sphere appropriates and reduces the human personality and shifts the blame for the failure from the system onto the individual. In this way, the control system is transformed into a more sophisticated control and over-regulation in relation to the individual. Humanization becomes a contradiction and the effects of work and professional ethics lose their sense and philosophical-anthropological foundations.

Studies on narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder often emphasize the key role of self-esteem in the mechanisms of this disorder. In previous studies, self-esteem has often been treated as a permanent feature of an individual and has been tested using self-report questionnaires or, in some cases, using experimental methods. Assuming that self-esteem may differ depending on the situation, different methods should be used in order to observe and study the processes related to it. In order to collect self-narratives for the purposes of the study, a semi-structured interview method was prepared to examine the self-esteem regulation in social situations. During the interview, the participant answers questions related to personal life experiences. Based on the content of interviews of participants with a high level of narcissistic traits selected from 20 conducted interviews, a preliminary analysis of the proactivity and defensiveness of self-narratives was conducted. The analysis mainly concerns the autonarratives of experiences related to failures and conflicts as events particularly significant for the self-esteem of an individual. The results of the preliminary analyzes allow us to present conclusions regarding proactivity and defensiveness as well as the characteristics of self-narratives referring to self-esteem in narcissistic group.

The recent history of science has witnessed many shifts of paradigms. One of the major changes has been observed in the shift of spirituality, transforming from a traditional faith-based notion to a more secular or postmodern one. These changes are confusing for many modern people as they are not able to follow these rapid developments. This article is an attempt at providing a conceptual framework to understand the changes that the notion of spirituality has undergone using the concept of self-transcendence and its two major dimensions: vertical and horizontal. This model will serve to evaluate different ways of defining spirituality in both theology and the social sciences and to indicate the provenience of their roots in both disciplines. In conclusion, self-transcendence will be compared with the concept of self-actualization.

Dance is a catalyst for inspiration, for creating awareness of movement and self-expression, and to make a difference in the lives of children and adults. The current generation of kids is undergoing different kinds of stress, academic pressure, peer pressure and monotonous routines. Dance can be a fantastic stress-buster. While we define meditation as “controlled brain activity”, Dance is surely a form of meditation. When one dances, the brain has to coordinate with the body and mind to completely coordinate between music and movements. Dancing to one’s favorite music and enjoying it, helps an individual focus strictly on the moment they are in. This aids in controlling the release of cortisol hormones from the brain, which helps in lowering stress and tension levels. “When the body feels good, the mind does too”. Dance can be a very therapeutic and healthy way for people to channelize any feeling that they may be experiencing. If anyone is suffering from depression, dance can give an outlet for emotions; connects you to a positive environment. Dance replaces stress hormones with pleasure hormones like endorphins and serotonins. This paper incorporates the basic principles of learning and reinforcement that are known to be effective methods in helping individuals to dance. The paper attempts to portray the author’s experiences about ‘Dance as a catalyst for stress busting’. The research methodology used are literature survey, inputs in the form of survey and personal experiences of the author. This paper publishes the results of a survey that was conducted amongst teenagers based on the students of Natyashala School of Bharatanatyam. The survey was primarily oriented to answer whether and how dance acts as a stress buster in their lives. Another, a practical experience-based approach was conducted as, an in-school Dance Program for children with special needs; catering specifically to children with Autistic disabilities is presented here. Techniques to inculcate dance as an early intervention for teenagers are also discussed. As one continues to dance, we can see how dancing will naturally develop and increase one’s self confidence and self-esteem, both on and off the dance floor, helping to further reduce the feelings of tension and pressure.   As the awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorder has increased, so have the number of therapeutic approaches. Therefore the most effective treatment or combination of treatments remains inconclusive. Creative movement and dance is a practical and feasible option for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This article aims to present a narrative review of the literature for dance and stress and it is hoped that parents, teachers, and educators can gain thorough understanding of how dance can be adapted for autistic children who may be thinking about implementing dance movement therapy into an autistic child's routine.

Two hypotheses concerning the relative importance of agentic versus communal traits as predictors of selfesteem were tested. The perspective hypothesis assumed that self-esteem is dominated by agency over communion because self-perceptions are formed from the agent (versus recipient) perspective. The culture hypothesis assumed that self-esteem is dominated by communal concerns in collectivistic cultures and by agentic concerns in individualistic cultures (echoed by individual differences in self-construal). Study 1 involving three samples from collectivistic countries and three from individualistic ones found that self-esteem was better predicted from self-ratings of agentic than communal traits, with the exception of collectivistic women for whom the two predictors were equal. Study 2 primed the interdependent or independent self and found self-ratings of agency to be better predictors of self-esteem than self-ratings of communion, with the exception of interdependence priming, where the two predictors were equal in strength.

Opis:
The article focuses on the notion of the image of self-shadow in American photography in the second half of the twentieth century, understood as a shadow silhouette of the creator captured in a photograph. The two main problems that concern the author’s research are the lack of current, theoretical study on the problem of shadow in the history of photography from the perspective of art history (V. Stoichita, R. Casati, P. Cavanagh, H. Kanaan) and the lack of the definition of the phenomenon of self-shadow and its possible types in self-portraiture. The author’s proposition of a definition of self-shadow is based on selected photographs by four artists whose works touch upon the problem of shadow in the context of relations between the “self” and the “other” (Lee Friedlander), race and subjective invisibility (Shawn W. Walker), mask and the other-self (Andy Warhol), and the intimate recording of identity (Nan Goldin). In her analyses, the author discusses the problem of the hybrid ontology of the shadow, which is both visible and visual. In this understanding, the shadow not only refers to a physical body, present “here and now” but more importantly evokes a sense of presence, even when the artist’s body is absent in the picture. The double index refers to the image leaving its mark both in reality and on light-sensitive paper. The rudimentary, vitalistic relation linking the human body with its shadow is only a starting point for analyses of the complexity of its status and symbolism. The concepts framing Andy Warhol’s Polaroid are twinning, the mask, and the Jungian theory of the shadow archetype. To discuss the self-portrait of Shawn W. Walker, the author applies the literary-philosophical concept of invisibility based on writings from Black existentialists (W.E.B. Du Bois, F. Fanon, R. Ellison). The analyses of Lee Friedlander’s photograph have been based on the psychological distinction between the figures of the “self” and the “other”. The closing concepts that frame Nan Goldin’s self-portrait are the haptic thinking subject (M. Smolińska) and the notion of a diary. The critical apparatus of the study is supplemented by contemporary analyses of the myth of Narcissus, the mythical origins of the self-portrait, and the notion of the index (after R. Krauss, M. Michałowska, M.A. Doane).

People formulate different judgments at different stages of their lives, they pay attention to different aspects of themselves and while making selfdescription, they are guided by different impacts. Many factors influence the way these judgments are made. It depends both on the psychological development of the individual and the stage of development of self-knowledge at which they are. The aim of the study was to find out the connection between the participation activity rate of foreign languages teachers in specially focused network pedagogical communities and the level of professional self-realization through their self-efficacy. We used methods of mathematical statistics, computer data processing and discursive reflextion for drawing logical conclusions from experimental data. 267 foreign languages teachers from Ukrainian universities participated in the first stage of research. During the second stage, 108 selected foreign languages teachers completed a questionnaire for collecting data and evaluating the level of their self-efficacy. Results indicate a significant difference in the professional self-realization levels among the members and non-members of specially focused network communities and confirm the suggested hypothesis.

The aim of the present study was to explore the role of temporal intelligence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ self-regulation and self-efficacy. To this end, a general temporal intelligence (GTI-S) scale was designed based on the subconstructs of time in the literature. The scale, along with the learning self-regulation questionnaire (SRQ-L) and the English self-efficacy scale was administered to 520 EFL learners. To validate the GTI-S, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was run. The results of Pearson product-moment correlations demonstrated significantly positive relationships between temporal intelligence and controlled self-regulation, automatic self-regulation and self-efficacy (p<.05). Moreover, the findings of multiple regressions revealed that Linearity of Time, Economicity of Time, and Multitasking are the most important subconstructs of time with relation to these variables.

Opis:
Based on the balance theory (Heider, 1958), we hypothesized that emotions (i.e., schadenfreude, resentment, joy and sorrow) induced by other person’s outcomes function as responses restoring balance within cognitive units consisting of the perceiver, other persons and their outcomes. As a consequence, emotional reactions towards others’ outcomes depend on the perceiver’s attitudes in such a way that outcomes of a well-liked person rise congruous responses (sorrow after failure and joy after success), while outcomes of a disliked other lead to incongruous responses (schadenfreude after failure and resentment after success). Our participants recalled a situation from their past in which somebody they liked or disliked had succeed or failed. Additionally, we manipulated whether the outcome referred to a domain where participants’ self-interest was involved or not. We analyzed the participants’ average emotional state as well as specific emotions induced by the recalled events. Consistently with expectations we found that balancing principles played a major role in shaping emotional responses to successes and failures of person who were well-liked or disliked.

Opis:
Prezentowany artykuł dotyczy analizy koncepcji rozwoju własnej osoby dokonanej przez Marię Dudzikową (1985) oraz jej autorskiego opracowania problematyki kompetencji autokreacyjnych (Dudzikowa, 1993, 1994, 2007). Mechanizm autokreacji zakłada, iż człowiek jest kreatorem siebie samego, a przestrzeń autokreacji stanowi nowy sposób doświadczania świata i własnego w nim miejsca.
The presented article concerns the analysis of the concept of self-development by Maria Dudzikowa (1985) and her own work on self-creation competence (Dudzikowa, 1993, 1994, 2007). The mechanism of self-creation presupposes that man is the creator of himself and the space of self-creation is a new way of experiencing the world and his own place in it. The study analyzes the conditions of the process of self-creation and the structure of the self-creation process as well as the participation of transgressive behavior in it. According to the concept of Józef Kozielecki (1985, 1987, 2001, 2007), the mechanism of creating the Self can be implemented through transgressive activities called autotransgression, self-development or personality creation according to own design. Transgression is associated with the implementation of projected visions of reality, potential states of affairs and the concept of the Self. In the final part of the article, the possibilities of self-development competence development in the education (including academic) process, understood as liberating, emancipating and development-friendly, were assessed.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a study to determine valid criteria for diagnosing the students level of readiness for self-educational activities. In the study as the psychological readiness for self-education author considers the desire to perform certain self-educational tasks, the ability to achieve the goals of self-education, the presence of moral and volitional qualities that contribute to the fulfillment of this task (responsibility, discipline, perseverance), understanding of the essence and the need of self-education for becoming a specialist. By technological readiness for self-educational activity, the author understands the ability to perform self-educational tasks, the ability to allocate time, organize, control, and adjust self activities. Based on the obtained results, it is concluded that the level of psychological readiness for self-education can be defined as the average arithmetic mean of students' assessments on a three-point scale of statements of the questionnaire "Readiness for self-educational activity": "I like to study on my own"; “I study additionally myself”; “I can independently achieve my goals of self-education”; “I realize that I will not achieve my goals without additional study”; “I study new things every day”; “I'm quite responsible”; "I'm quite disciplined." The level of technological readiness for self-educational activity is defined as the average value of expert assessments of self-educational skills and average assessments of students of their own ability to set goals and plan activities. The sum of these assessments makes it possible to judge the level of the student's readiness for selfeducational activity, as well as to correct the underdeveloped components of readiness. The validity of these criteria is confirmed by a statistical study revealing reliable links with the corresponding scales of the standardized questionnaires "General structure of activity" (GSA) E.Yu. Mandrikova and "Style of self-regulation of behavior" (SSB) by V.I. Morosanova.

Aim. The aim of the research is to generalize different types of "healthy" narcissistic Self-regulation and to disclose the specific of self-fulfillment and personal life satisfaction. Method. The empirical study involved 360 Ukrainian students (N=360), aged from 17 to 24. The following research methods were used F. W. Deneke and B. Hilgenstock’s Narcissism Inventory (1989), A. Längle and C. Orgler’s Scale of Existence (2003), E. Diener’s Satisfaction with Life Scale (1985), D. Polhus and C. Williams’s "Dark Triad of Personality" questionnaire (2002). The obtained data were processed by multivariate statistics (Statistica 8.0 and Exel), using cluster and comparative analysis (Student's t-test, Scheffe Test). Results. The analysis shows that the most effectively functioning narcissistic self-regulation type is characterized by high narcissism that goes together with the high self-power. The personal fulfillment indicators (such as: self-distance, self-transcendence, freedom, responsibility, existentialism, and personality) are also growing in such conditions. Adequate narcissistic self-regulation goes together with the more meaningful relations with reality and enrichment of the person’s internal emotional life. With the growth of narcissism raises rather positive life acceptance and affirmative attitudes towards “Being” and oneself in it. Conclusions. Narcissistic self-regulation is a mechanism that cares about the stability and integrity of the self-system, makes it possible to accept and appreciate one’s own personality. Only through the prism of prizing oneself (high, but functional narcissism) the value of other people and the world could be seen. This opens the possibility to find and fulfill the meaning of existence.

The reviewer gets involved in a polemic with the authors of "The Economic and Professional Self-Government in the Political System of Poland" by Robert Kmieciak, Paweł Antkowiak, and Katarzyna Walkowiak. The editorial aspect of the work evokes a positive response, but the reviewer has doubts concerning the concepts presented by the authors, believing that the publication gathers and repeats ideas that have previously been discussed in the literature of the subject. What is more, the book does not take into account the literature which critically evaluates professional self-government. The authors use a definition of economic self-government that is inadequate in the 21st century, and they suggest entrusting the operation of the Commercial Register to the Chamber of Commerce, a solution which the reviewer perceives as possibly anachronistic.

Opis:
Research background: the occurrence of stress contributes to solving regular problems of adaptation, finding new ways of self-development, and social support. A short-term emotional surge (stress) stimulates the search for new ways of individual human development. Creating a personal blog is one way to overcome the negative effects of stress. A popular personal blog focuses followers' attention on their personality and promotes self-improvement and development. In this study, we focus only on individuals who have built a personal brand by promoting their personal blogs on social media. Purpose of the article: personal brand as a carrier of unique knowledge and professional skills is a product of public perception. This is confirmed by the fact that the individuality of the brand is associated with the created image, to which consummers and society react. Thus, personal branding is a competent step-by-step plan for personal promotion and development. The main task of this study is to identify the motivational factors of personal brand development and the impact of stress on them. Methods: to determine sample size, we performed an a priori power analysis for within-subjects repeated measures analysis of variance. In parallel, we conducted a regression analysis of the degree of involvement and trust in personal brands in social networks to determine the objects of the experimental analysis using the structured interview method. To establish confirmability, validity, transferability, and reliability during qualitative data analysis, the following methods were used: expert debriefing; coding, etc. To analyze the qualitative research data, we ran a linear regression to analyze the effect of audience engagement through post-response, self-development effect, and self-satisfaction. Findings & Value added: the obtained data suggest that uncertainty about one's own significance in social development should make appeals for social support more persuasive than when such appeals are not used. And also, that the crisis of personal development should make appeals to attention deficit more convincing than when there are no such appeals.

Semiotic self has the ability to thinking through sign forms about phenomena which experiences and identity also occur in special sign representations. In activity the thought gets the sign forms representing phenomena, in the experience it has the symbolic form, in the reflection it gains the form of identity signs. Negligence in thinking of representation of action objects, feeling relations, and axiological reflection seems to be the reason why the social context of self in psychological conceptions becomes some anonymous society, abstract culture and history.

Aim: The present study was designed to examine relationships between young people’s self-concepts and their perceptions of their futures Methods: High school students (n = 347) completed measures of the two domains of self‑concept, the evaluative domain, self-esteem, and the knowledge or structural domain, self-concept clarity. They also completed two measures of perceptions of their futures, optimism and future time perspective. Results: Both measures of self-concept were positively correlated with both measures of perception of the future. For both measures of perceptions of the future, regression analyses found that when perceptions of the future were regressed onto the two measures of self-concept perceptions of the future were significantly related to only self-esteem. Relationships between perceptions of the future and self-concept clarity were not significant. Analyses of mediation found that self-esteem mediated the relationship between self-concept clarity and both measures of perceptions of the future. Conclusion: Young people with a clearer sense of self and who have higher self-esteem are more optimistic and perceive a longer future than young people with a less clear sense of self and who have lower self-esteem; however, the effects of self-concept clarity disappear after the relationship between clarity and self-esteem are taken into account.

The aim of  the  paper  is  to  show  the  conditions  of  subjectivity constitution in terms of dialogue and the figure of the Other. The analytical and hermeneutical approach I hold is the foundation of interdisciplinary attempt to describe  possible  concepts  of  shared  relation of the terms: consciousness, subjectivity and identity. The three appear to be recognized only in the ethical situation. It requires taking responsibility for the Other, for giving him the identity which mirrors one’s subjectivity. In this way the subject learns the limits and chances for gaining self-knowledge. The paper also presents a new approach towards redefining the definition of subjectivity, which includes artificially and medically enhanced entities.
Celem artykułu jest ukazanie warunków konstytucji podmiotów w zakresie dialogu i postaci Innego. Stosowane przeze mnie podejście analityczne i hermeneutyczne stanowi zakres interdyscyplinarnej próby opisywania relacji między różnymi terminami relacji: tożsamości, podmiotów i tożsamości.

W referowanym studium zbadano poziom globalny samooceny młodzieży w Polsce oraz dwie dymensje samooceny (self-liking i self-competence) w perspektywie międzykulturowej, porównując wyniki uzyskane w Polsce – aktualnie podlegającej transformacji – z krajem indywidualistycznym (Włochy) i z krajem kolektywistycznym (Chiny). W badaniach młodzieży polskiej, włoskiej i chińskiej wykorzystano Skalę Samooceny Rosenberga (RSES).

Maintaining beauty and youthfulness has always been and still is among the natural desires of women. A modern woman is a woman of success: independent, professionally successful, staying active for many years of her life. This activity as well as the influence of the media induce women to adapt to the existing patterns at all costs. Minimally invasive aesthetic medicine procedures help to repair beauty defects and reduce the ageing processes. They can have a positive influence on life and thinking by increasing well-being and atractiveness as well as helping to get rid of complexes. The aim of this paper is to assess the way in which the minimally invasive aesthetic medicine procedures affect the self-esteem of women and womens' perception of their own body. The study was conducted prospectively using a standardized questionnaire and diagnostic tools examining the perception of one's own body, self-esteem and emotional condition. The procedures performed most often were corrections with the use of hyaluronic acid and the most frequently declared motivation for the surgery was the need to increase sexual attractiveness that follows the first symptoms of aging processes. The undertaken analysis reveals that undergoing various forms of appearance correction has several psychical, physical and social effects. A significant majority of women that decided to undergo the treatments had high or average self-esteem initially, and its levels increased even further after the aesthetic surgery.

Self-efficacy can affect an individual’s thoughts and emotions. It can be related to self-regulation processes and coping strategies. The aim of the study was to try to answer the question of whether there are correlations between the mentioned variables. To test this, an online survey was designed on the Google Forms platform, which included sociodemographic questions and three questionnaires: General Self-Efficacy Scale, COPE Inventory, Self Regulation Formative Questionnaire. The survey was prepared in English. The survey included 470 participants from Poland and Spain. The study was conducted during increased stress, which is the exam session. The result of the statistical analysis confirmed the accepted hypothesis. Strategies used in coping with stress are related to the level of selfregulation and self-efficacy. The higher the sense of self-efficacy, the more frequent the selection of favorable coping strategies, as well as the higher the level of self-regulation, the more frequent the selection of adaptive strategies and the rarer the selection of adaptive coping strategies. The results obtained are discussed in relation to the literature on the topic and previous studies, and it is suggested that further studies be conducted in a different context, taking into account that the results of self-efficacy or self-regulation could be different during intensified stress, for instance before or after an exam.

Opis:
This article reports the first meta-analysis of the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2005, 2009). A total of 32 research reports, involving 39 unique samples and 32,078 language learners, were meta-analyzed. The results showed that the three components of the L2 motivational self system (the ideal L2 self, the ought-to L2 self, and the L2 learning experience) were significant predictors of subjective intended effort (rs = .61, .38, and .41, respectively), though weaker predictors of objective measures of achievement (rs = .20, -.05, and .17). Substantial heterogeneity was also observed in most of these correlations. The results also suggest that the strong correlation between the L2 learning experience and intended effort reported in the literature is, due to substantial wording overlap, partly an artifact of lack of discriminant validity between these two scales. Implications of these results and directions for future research are discussed.
