Opis:
Pakistan has been facing a high level of violence over the decades. Although a paucity of knowledge on this issue in Pakistan is observed, this essay nonetheless outlines the documented patterns of street-youth violence: its causes, perpetrators and the socio-cultural and political constructs of the phenomenon. The wide gap in both the empirical and theoretical knowledge of the ‘North and South’ of the intellectual global world impedes the researchers of the indigenous social problems to construct a comprehensive sociological perspective on the street-youth violence that exists in this region.

Opis:
Tizanidine HCl (TZN HCl) is a muscle relaxant and Meloxicam (MLX) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for various pain disorders. They are extensively used as combination therapy in various pain disorder and the need is to develop a suitable method for their simultaneous determination loaded in a single dosage form. Objective of the study was to develop a simple, specific, and accurate reverse phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of TZN HCl and MLX. A kromasil C18 (250×4.60 mm dimensions, 5 μm particle size) column with mobile phase consisting of methanol:water (80:20) was used at isocratic mode. pH of the mobile phase was adjusted to 3.0 by using ortho phosphoric acid and 228nm was taken as lambda max for the detection of drugs. Flow rate was adjusted to 0.8ml/min at ambient temperature with average operating pressure of 140 bar. The retention time of TZN HCl was 2.613 min and of MLX was 6.992 min with resolution of 3.23 and both drugs showed satisfactory linearity in the range of 5-50 μg/mL with correlation coefficient (R2) 0.09997 and 0.9993 respectively. The method was validated as per ICH guidelines and found to be précised with less than 2% relative standard deviation (%RSD). % Recoveries of TZN HCl and MLX were in the range of 99.01% to 100.47% and 98.18% to 100.88% respectively. From the result, it was concluded that the method is suitable for the simultaneous quantification of TZN HCl and MLX.

Opis:
Bamboo is a naturally available, fast growing and renewable resource. Bamboo plants are found all over the world in tropical and non-tropical regions. Asia pacific region is specifically rich in bamboo biodiversity. Due to high energy demand of existing construction materials and scarcity of other naturally available materials like wood, bamboo is a good alternative for construction. This paper reviews the mechanical properties and use of bamboo in construction. The tensile strength of different bamboo species varies in the range 70-210 MPa, compressive strength 20-65 MPa, elastic modulus 2500-17500 MPa, and modulus of rupture 50-200 MPa. Bamboo is a versatile material and can be used in construction in various ways. Bamboo can be engineered to specific need in construction such as laminated and scrimber bamboo. Engineered bamboo are used for various housing purposes such as roofing and flooring. Bamboo culms are often used directly without any alteration as structural members such as beams and columns. Bamboo can also be used as reinforcement in concrete as a replacement to steel. The shear and flexural behavior of bamboo reinforced concrete (BRC) beams is significantly better than plain concrete beams. Bamboo fibers reinforced concrete (BFRC) is a good alternative to existing synthetic fibers reinforced concrete such as glass and steel fibers. Development of standardized testing procedures and structural specifications utilizing existing and future research findings will pave the way towards an extensive use of bamboo in construction industry.

Opis:
This paper presents the outcome of a research study aimed at the performance evaluation of rice husk ash as partial replacement of cement in sandcrete blocks used as masonry units. Rice husk from rice cultivated in the North of Pakistan was used in the study. It was first combusted in a locally manufactured incinerator to convert it into rice husk ash (RHA) and then finely ground to powder form for use with cement. Blocks of size 305 mm×203 mm×152 mm were molded with 0, 10, 30, 40 and 50 % replacement of cement with RHA to find compressive strength at 3, 7, 14 and 28 days age of curing. The results showed that water requirement for the required workability of the sandcrete increased with increase in RHA content whereas compressive strength decreased with increase in RHA content. However, the comparison of compressive strengths of RHA sandcrete blocks with the strength of commercial concrete blocks available in the market and used as masonry units in Pakistan showed that sandcrete blocks having sand to binder ratio of 1:8 and using up to 40% of RHA as replacement of cement gave larger compressive strength than that of commercial concrete blocks and only marginally lower strength for 50% replacement.

Opis:
The current study was aimed to evaluate the industrial effluents biodegradation potential of an indigenous microorganism which reduced water pollution caused by these effluents. In the present study biodegradation of three textile industrial effluents was performed with locally isolated brown rot fungi named Coniophora puteana IEBL-1. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed under Box Bhenken Design (BBD) for the optimization of physical and nutritional parameters for maximum biodegradation. Quality of treated effluents was checked by study of BOD, COD and analysis through HPLC. Three ligninolytic enzymes named lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase and laccase were also studied during the biodegradation process. The results showed that there was more than 85% biodegradation achieved for all three effluents with decrease in Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) below the recommended values for industrial effluent i.e. 80 mg/L for BOD and 220 mg/L for COD after optimization of nutritional parameters in the second stage. Analysis of samples through HPLC revealed the formation of less toxic diphenylamine, 3-methyldiphenylamine and N-methylaniline after treatment. The ligninolytic enzymes assays confirmed the role of lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase in biodegradation process. Lignin peroxidase with higher activity has more contribution in biodegradation of effluents under study. It can be concluded through the results that Coniophora buteana IEBL-1 is a potential fungus for the treatment of industrial effluents.
