Opis:
Trees and shrubs in urban and peri-urban areas provide a number of benefits to people. Besides their aesthetic value, they deliver tangible environmental benefits, that often are unrecognized and taken for granted. In recent years, there has been an increased interest of researchers in ecosystem services – the direct benefits that natural system provide to people1. In this paper we focus on trees and shrubs in urban and peri-urban areas and on ecosystem services they provide. In particular, we investigate whether cutting off trees and shrubs in accordance with administrative permissions undermine ecosystem services. The task undertaken in this paper involves two questions: firstly, which types of ecosystem services are provided by trees and shrubs, and secondly, do felling trees/shrubs diminish ecosystem services’ provision?

Opis:
This sedimentological study was based on well cores from the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpa- thian Foredeep. It revealed general heterogeneity of facies in the middle Miocene of the sedimentary succession in the basin. Fourteen sedimentary facies were distinguished and their origin was interpreted: massive, non-graded sandstones; normal-graded, massive sandstones, with and without a stratified uppermost part; hydroplastically deformed sandstones; planar-parallel-stratified sandstones; trough-cross-stratified sandstones; ripple-cross-lami- nated sandstones; heterolithic deposits, composed of thinly interlayered sandstone and mudstone; massive and laminated mudstones; and basal gypsum/anhydrite evaporites, often intercalated with mudstone. Four main modalities of vertical facies organization were recognized and attributed to the following environments: (1) the mid-late Badenian, shoal-water, evaporitic environment that preceded the latest Badenian–early Sarmatian, main phase of foredeep development; (2) a littoral, tidal environment of the inner parts of storm-influenced, coastal bays and tidal flats or possibly spit-sheltered lagoons; (3) a wave-dominated, littoral, sandy environment, considered to be shoreface, extended by waves, in front of advancing deltas; and (4) a neritic to subneritic, muddy, offshore slope, characterized by frequent incursions of tempestite and turbidite sand. The study contributed to a better understanding of the mid-Miocene depositional systems in the basin, with significant implications for ongoing hydrocarbon exploration. Interpretations of the origins of potential reservoir sandstones provided important information on their possible stratigraphic distribution in the basin fill. The potential, economic importance of stratigraphic hydrocarbon traps underscored the urgent need for a full-scale facies analysis and fully cored wells in strategic parts of the basin.

Opis:
Iron is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, a vital component of every living organism, and an essential micronutrient for all animal species. The primary source of iron for calves and other new-born ruminants is milk or a milk replacer, while for adults it is forage. Drinking water can contain various amounts of Fe ions and can be a source of this element as well. Systemic iron homeostasis in vertebrates is mostly regulated by hepcidin (HEP), a peptide synthesized and secreted by hepatocytes. The largest amounts of iron in the body are incorporated into proteins, mainly haemoglobin and myoglobin. This element participates in several biochemical processes including blood production, transport of oxygen, energy metabolism and immune processes. Iron deficiency can result in so-called iron deficiency anaemia, mostly occurring in young calves due to low iron content in cow’s milk and high demand for this element by calf’s organism. Iron poisoning mostly occurs due to excess iron intake caused by an inappropriate dose of iron given to animals (injection or per os administration) or accidental consumption of high doses of supplements. Excess iron intake can cause overload and damage of internal organs. Oxidation of ferrous iron in haemoglobin can result in methemoglobinemia and an inability of erythrocytes to carry oxygen. In recent years, scientists have implicated some questions regarding iron and ruminants that need re-evaluation or further investigation, e.g. the upper tolerable concentration of Fe in drinking water, the relationship between inflammation and iron status, serum Fe as an indicator of inflammation, or ferritin as a predictive factor for iron deficiency anaemia in cattle.

Opis:
The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of sedimentary rocks has been used for interpreting wide range of processes: early rock deformations, palaeotransport directions, as well as the evolution of mineral content. Various sedimentary factors which may determine magnetic susceptibility within lacustrine, river, floodplain and swamp deposits have been examined in the Oravica section of the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin. Multiple components of mineral content: illite, chlorite, smectite, kaolinite, quartz and unidentified high susceptibility phase make an AMS interpretation of this content ambiguous. However, this method may be useful for tracing early diagenetic geochemical/microbial processes where iron element is involved. Some sedimentary processes may be recognized from AMS when an assemblage of parameters is studied together: bulk susceptibility, the degree and the shape of anisotropy, principal directions, and the distribution of all these parameters within a set of specimens. Debris-flow processes, as well as lacustrine and floodplain sedimentation are especially well-defined in AMS results. Palaeotransport directions are ambiguous because studied rocks have undergone weak deformation what overprints this sedimentary feature. Most specimens represent an oblate shape of anisotropy and show a good correlation of minimum susceptibility axis and normal to bedding plane.

Opis:
The paper analyzes the spatial and temporal diversity of afforestation of non−forest land, with particular emphasis on land not being the property of the State Treasury, before joining the European Union and as part of subsequent stages of the Rural Development Program. Data from the databases of the Statistics Poland and from the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture was used. Afforestation in the period 2001−2018 was carried out with varying intensity throughout the country and in individual years. This condition was largely influenced by availability of land for afforestation and the form of land ownership. The history of the individual regions is clearly visible as well. Private forests occupy the smallest area in the territories incorporated into Poland after World War II, also in part of the former Prussia region and in the area covered by so called the ‘Wisła’ Operation in south−eastern Poland. In turn, in Podlasie and Lubelszczyzna regions (eastern Poland), the share of private forests is significant. The biggest changes in the afforestation structure took place after the introduction of subsidies for their establishment and care, after Poland’s accession to the European Union. In the period 2004−2018, the scope and criteria for granting the subsidies changed. New categories, which were to encourage beneficiaries to use this form of support, appeared. In 2004−2007 part of the Rural Development Program the area of afforested land in relation to the number of beneficiaries or issued decisions was the largest, while in subsequent campaigns the afforestation area decreased, despite the increase in the level of subsidies. The most important reasons for reducing the interest in afforestation are: decreasing resources of land intended for afforestation, greater interest among farmers in competitive payments for agricultural land, complicated bureaucratic procedures related to afforestation. The paper also highlights the most important restrictions that inhibit afforestation. These include: exclusion from afforestation of land located in Natura 2000 areas, exclusion of grassland (meadows and pastures) from afforestation and limitation of the aid granted for afforestation to one farmer to an area not exceeding 20 ha in the entire Program period. Lifting these barriers can have a positive effect on the creation of new afforestation or improvement of existing ones.

Opis:
In most of European countries, basic information about forests that is used for its monitoring and formulation of national policies comes from the National Forest Inventories (NFIs). Assessment of forest resources at the national level was initiated in Poland in 2005. In 2014, the second cycle of NFI was completed. Since 2010, results of NFI are the main source of information about the amount of forest resources in Poland, their structure and condition. In the paper, we analyse the indicators of forest structure. Classification of forest categories (forested, temporary non−forested, related to forestry), vertical stand structure, species composition and age structure determined directly from NFI's sample plots were compared with descriptions of stands in which plots are located. Data from more than 29,000 NFI sample plots measured in 2010−2014 were analysed. Our results demonstrate that the share of temporary non−forested areas (resulting from manage− ment practices) assessed from NFI plots is higher than this based upon the stands description (3.9% and 1.8% respectively). We also observed that results of NFI show the huge discrepancy in percentage of land related to forestry (forest roads generally) in forests of private property comparing to cadastral data (1,2% and 0,04% respectively). Most of forests in Poland (92% based on NFI) are single−layer stands. But it should be emphasised that NFI indicate more than twice higher share of two−layer stands (4.8%) than that resulting from description of stands in which samples are located (2.2%). However, only one third of NFI plots located in two−generation and uneven−aged stands was assessed in the same way. On 80% of sample plots dominant species was in accordance with stand description. On 85% plots there were compatibility of the age of dominant species with age recorded in forest management plans. The results of our research confirm that description of the entire diversity of forests by any of the indicators is not practically possible. Simplifying the forests description occurs during NFI measurements as well as within forest management planning. However, some issues need clarification and additional analysis when NFI is used as a source of forest structure. NFI plots with maximal size of a few hundred square meters seem to be too small to observe vertical structure of stands. On the other hand, it should be recog− nized whether division of the sample plots into smaller sections does not cause overestimation of the area of temporary non−forested land.

Opis:
The effects of essential oil and hydrosol extracted from dried aerial parts of wrinkled-leaf mint (Mentha crispa L.), were determined against Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus parasiticus, Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium herbarum, Fusarium oxysporum and Penicillium cyclopium growth. The influence of oil was estimated by disc diffusion agar method and expressed (in mm) as inhibition growth zones of tested strains. Furthermore, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal fungicidal concentration (MFC) of oil were determined by microdilution method in liquid medium. Chromatography analysis showed that the main components of oil were: piperitenone (29.9%), pulegone (13.9%) and 1,8-cineole (10.5%). The oil proved the highest inhibitory action against B. cinerea (MFC≤0.32 μl·ml-1, inhibition zone 50.0 mm) and C. herbarum (MFC=0.63 μl·ml-1, inhibition zone 59.3mm), and the least – against A. parasiticus and F. oxysporum, (inhibition zones respectively 7.0 and 12.7 mm, MIC=5.0 μl·ml-1, and MFC=10.0 μl·ml-1). Activity of hydrosol was expressed as a percent of inhibition growth of fungi which was calculated on the ground of diameters of colonies growing on agar medium with addition of 10 and 15% hydrosol and diameters of colonies on control medium. Data showed that antifungal activity of hydrosol was weak. It in higher amounts inhibited the growth of A. fumigatus (by 8.7 and 15.9%, respectively, at a concentration in medium of 10 and 15%) and stimulated growth of B. cinerea and P. cyclopium.
Określono działanie olejku eterycznego i hydrozolu, otrzymanych z wysuszonych, nadziemnych pędów mięty kędzierzawej (Mentha crispa L.), na wzrost grzybów: Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus parasiticus, Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium herbarum, Fusarium oxysporum i Penicillium cyclopium. Olejek wykazywał najwyższą aktywność wobec B. cinerea (MFC ≤0,32 μl·ml-1, strefa zahamowania 50,0 mm) oraz C. herbarum (MFC=0,63 μl·ml-1, strefa zahamowania 59,3 mm), natomiast najmniej ograniczał wzrost A. parasiticus i F. oxysporum (strefy zahamowania odpowiednio 7,0 i 12,7 mm, MIC=5,0 μl·ml-1, a MFC=10,0 μl·ml-1). Najbardziej hamował on wzrost A. fumigatus (o 8,7 i 15,9%, odpowiednio przy stężeniu w podłożu 10 i 15%), a stymulował wzrost B. cinerea i P. cyclopium.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of the birch market in Poland in 2008−2012, including the acquisition (supply) of birch wood, the income structure, prices of birch wood, the structure of birch wood recipients and the volume of purchased timber. The necessary materials were obtained from the Forest Data Bank (BDL) and the State Forests Information System (SILP). The S2 wood assortment representing more than 54% of all assortment groups is most often harvested in Poland. Next come M1 representing 14%, as well as S4 and WC – each with share slightly exceeding 11%. The vast majority of the harvested and handled birch wood is in the group of medium−sized assortments S representing 66%, and in the group of small−sized assortments M representing 14%. Birch wood classified as large−sized W totals 20%. Similarly, timber assortments from group S2 also generate the largest portion of revenues (over 50% of total revenues from birch wood sales). High fluctuations in the prices of certain groups of birch wood assortments constitute a significant problem from the point of view of both the State Forests and wood consumers. A possible reduction in the supply of wood of this species in the future may deepen this phenomenon. Average sales prices of birch wood on the Polish market are lower than the prices obtained by timber producers in the neighbouring countries. The price differences in favour of foreign timber producers reach up to 20% and relate to roundwood in different quality and size classes. The exceptionally high technical quality of birch wood in our country does not translate to higher prices per cubic meter of raw timber in the domestic turnover. The sharp increase in the demand for a special type of fibres for the manufacture of many products characterized by exceptional strength (i.e. products from polymers) and textiles with special insulating properties, as well as the production of certain grades of paper and board, will stimulate the consumption of birch wood in the future.

Nowadays, agriculture has to meet the growing food demand together with high requirements of environmental protection, especially regarding the climate change. The greenhouse gas emissions differ not only on a global, but also on a regional scale, and mitigation strategies are effective when they are adapted properly. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present the results of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions inventory on a regional level in Poland in years 1999-2015. The CH4 and N2O emissions were calculated according to the methodology used by the National Centre for Emissions Management (NCEM) for national inventory for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Kyoto Protocol. The data were taken from Central Statistical Office of Poland. The CH4 emissions in all studied years varied strongly between voivodeships and ranged from 5.6-7.5 Gg y-1 in the Lubuskie Voivodeship to 84.8-104.3 Gg y-1 in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship. While in most voivodeships the CH4 emissions dropped down, in Podlaskie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie, and Wielkopolskie voivodeships, the emissions of this gas increased significantly as a consequence of the development of dairy and meat production. In 1999, the highest N2O fluxes were calculated for the Wielkopolskie (5.7 Gg y-1), Mazowieckie (4.8 Gg y-1) Kujawsko-Pomorskie (3.5 Gg y-1) and Lubelskie (3.3 Gg y-1) voivodeships, while in 2015, the highest nitrous oxide emissions were calculated for the Wielkopolskie (7.3 Gg y-1), Mazowieckie (5.5 Gg y-1), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (4.1 Gg y-1) and Podlaskie (4.1 Gg y-1) voivodeships. In the studied period, the contribution of N2O emissions from crop production increased in almost all voivodeships except the Podlaskie, Lubuskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie regions. The growth in emissions from mineral fertilization and crop residue incorporation, together with the increase of emission from the animal sector in some regions of Poland, resulted in the higher national emission of nitrous oxide in the period of 1999 to 2015. Although there is a range of GHG reduction possibilities, the mitigation should be adapted with caution, on the basis of precisely calculated GHG emissions. The best management practices, if followed carefully, may reduce the environmental burden of the agricultural production and enhance its profitability.

Opis:
The Hoanh Bo Basin has developed over multiple periods since the Miocene period in association with the tectonic activity of the Chi Linh-Hon Gai and Trung Luong Faults. The basin is filled with Neogene continental sediments, comprising mainly polymictic conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, claystones, and shales. Coarser-grained polymictic deposits predominate along the northern and western margins of the basin, whereas different types of siltstones, claystones, and sandstones occur in its centre, as well as along its southern and eastern parts, toward the Ha Long Bay. The conglomerates and sandstones are composed mainly of quartz and sedimentary rock fragments, and a small amount of mica. Cement is mainly built of iron-oxide, clay or carbonate mud. The source area for the Hoanh Bo Basin sediments was located in the close vicinity of the basin. It was built of strongly weathered rocks of the Hon Gai, Ha Coi, Cat Ba Formations.

Opis:
The Hoanh Bo Basin is a multiple period formed basin which is associated with the tectonic mechanism due to the activity of the Chi Linh-Hon Gai and Trung Luong Faults during the late Paleogene – early Neogene time. The basin is filled with continental sediments, comprising mainly polymictic conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, claystones and shales. Coarser-grained polymictic deposits predominate along the northern and western margins of the basin, while different types of siltstones, claystones, even sandstones occur in its center, as well as along its southern and eastern parts toward the Ha Long Bay. The source rocks for sedimentary materials are mainly originated from rocks of the Hon Gai and Ha Coi Formations. Based on the dominant grain-size class, texture, stratification, degree of clast rounding and sorting, 17 lithofacies were determined in the Hoanh Bo Basin infill. The basin is filled by gravelly, sandy and fine-grained lithofacies just covers a modest area but it represents a full of succession of 4 depositional systems including alluvial fan, fluvial, deltaic and lacustrine environments. Alluvial fan and fluvial environments are characterized by an assemblage of lithofacies such as sand- and mud-supported disorganized breccias (Gb), clast- to sand-supported conglomerates (Gmm), clast-supported inverse-graded conglomerates (Gig), planar-cross-bedded conglomerates (Gp), trough cross-bedded conglomerates (Gt), horizontally stratified conglomerates (Gh), planar cross-bedded sandstones (Sp), trough cross-bedded sandstones (St), ripple cross-laminated sandstones (Sr), horizontally bedded sandstones (Sh), massive sandstones (Sm), massive mudstones, siltstones (Fsm), laminated siltstones and mudstones (Fl), massive claystones (Fm) and coaly lithofacies (C); the deltaic assemblage is dominated by planar-cross-bedded conglomerates (Gp), horizontally stratified conglomerates (Gh), planar cross-bedded sandstones (Sp), horizontally bedded sandstones (Sh), low-angle cross-bedded sandstones (Sl); while the lacustrine assemblage consists of ripple cross-laminated sandstones (Sr), horizontally bedded sandstones (Sh), normally graded sandstones (Sng), massive mudstones, siltstones (Fsm), laminated siltstones and mudstones (Fl), massive claystones (Fm) and coaly lithofacies (C).
