Opis:
In this paper, the authors present a novel construction of an automatic balancing device applicable to balancing shafts working in a heavily polluted environment. The novelty of the presented system lies in the fact that its utilization requires no changes to be made in the already existing shafts. Also, the system is capable of working during the operation of the balanced shaft, so there is no need to stop it. The propulsion system is based on eddy current braking, therefore no wires need to be used in the device. During the development process of the system, three iterations of the device were created. Each iteration is presented, described, and discussed. The advantages and drawbacks of each version are pointed out and explained thoroughly. The correctness of the design was verified by the created devices that were assembled and fixed on shafts to prove the design assumptions.

The aim of the article is to identify the factors that contribute to the differentiation of attitudes towards the coronavirus pandemic in three areas: 1) course of the pandemic; 2) evaluation of the actions of various actors in the fight against the pandemic; and 3) assessment of the restrictions introduced during the pandemic. The analysis is based on a survey conducted among the Polish population. A hierarchical cluster analysis procedure was conducted on the 15 variables using Ward’s method. We distinguished five groups: 1) dissenters, 2) government’s critics, 3) conformists, 4) critical conformists and 5) bystanders. Based on the cluster analysis we argue that: various models of social compliance with restrictions and of crisis management can be identified during pandemic, pandemic followed different trajectories for different groups and was differently experienced, the credibility of the statistics is an important element in shaping attitudes towards the pandemic.

Opis:
Appropriate modeling of unsteady aerodynamic characteristics is required for the study of aircraft dynamics and stability analysis, especially at higher angles of attack. The article presents an example of using artificial neural networks to model such characteristics. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated on the example of a strake-wing micro aerial vehicle. The neural model of unsteady aerodynamic characteristics was identified from the dynamic test cycles conducted in a water tunnel. The aerodynamic coefficients were modeled as a function of the flow parameters. The article presents neural models of longitudinal aerodynamic coefficients: lift and pitching moment as functions of angles of attack and reduced frequency. The modeled and trained aerodynamic coefficients show good consistency. This method manifests great potential in the construction of aerodynamic models for flight simulation purposes.

The paper analyzes selected apophthegms that are part of two collections: alphabetical and systematic. These texts had initially circulated in oral transmission between 330–460 AD and were written down in the mid-fifth century. In this form they are available up until today. The purpose of the analysis at hand is to try to find traces of oral transmission in the apophthegms, which has been attempted by considering the rather rich literature on oral cultures and oral transmission. The studies by E. A. Havelock, J. Goody, and W. B. Ong have proven most useful here. Oral memory in the recorded apophthegms was discerned at the level of the text itself, its form, structure, composition, the subject matter taken up, the importance of the spiritual guide, etc.

W artykule używając metafory superreroznosiciela zanalizowano zjawisko rozprzestrzeniania się sceptycyzmu wobec nauki i ekspertyzy medycznej. Autor chce pokazać, że w debacie na temat koronawirusa konkretni aktorzy przyczyniają się do utrwalania negatywnych przekonań na temat samego wirusa, jak i sposobów jego okiełznania. W pierwszej części tekstu przywołane zostały wcześniejsze przypadki teorii spiskowych i prób delegitymizowania wiedzy medycznej, pokazując, że są to dość częste reakcje na epidemie. W drugiej natomiast dokonano analizy wypowiedzi medialnych polityków Konfederacji związanych z pandemią Sars-Cov-2, by pokazać, dlaczego odgrywają oni rolę tytułowych superroznosicieli wątpliwości.
In the article, using the metaphor of a super-spreader, the phenomenon of spreading scepticism about science and medical expertise was analysed. The author wants to show that in the debate on the coronavirus, specific actors contribute to the dissemination of negative beliefs about the virus. In the first part of the text, earlier cases of conspiracy theories and attempts to delegitimize medical knowledge are mentioned, showing that these are quite frequent reactions to epidemics. The second part of the text analyzes the statements made by politicians related to the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic in order to show why they play the role of the super-spreaders of doubts.

The article concerns a specific narrative related to technological progress and scientific development. Hype is defined here as the excessive excitement that accompanies technology, new products or scientific progress. In the text the author analyses hype in the context of social conditions in which science is developed today. Two important circumstances that are conducive to the emergence of this narrative in the social space are pointed out - capitalism and democracy. The article also presents examples of hype from the media.

A numerical and experimental investigation of the Tesla turbine is presented in the paper. The experiment is conducted for various inlet pressure and load. The roughness of the rotor disc is determined as it is a key factor to obtain high turbine efficiency and power. The numerical investigations are performed for the same conditions as in the experiment. The computational results are compared with the analytical model. Comparison of performance characteristics show a relatively good agreement between the experiment and CFD. The analytical model overestimates distributions of pressure and circumferential velocities, although the predicted power is on the similar level as in the experiment and CFD.

The aim of this article is to present the Movement for Global Mental Health (MGMH) and its most important critiques. Opponents of the MGMH – primarily transcultural psychiatrists and medical anthropologists – point to a myriad of problems related to approaching mental health in supracultural and universalistic categories. Two dimensions of this criticism are discussed. Firstly, the MGMH is criticised as an expression of the neoliberalisation of medical discourse and practices, and a movement whose actions are focused on economic aspects of mental disorders (recognised as problems that generate costs for the economy) and depoliticising the actual sources of mental problems. Secondly, there is a dispute regarding the ontological status of mental disorders – embedded in its universalistic claims, the MGMH tends to lean towards biological explanations, while critics point to the lack of scientific evidence that would support such approach.

The article discusses phenomena related to the role that the Big Data technology plays in how culture is nowadays created and consumed. The subject of the analysis is Netflix, one of the video on demand service providers, and Rotten Tomatoes, a film review-aggregation website. Both services are recognized as examples of algorithmic culture. The author focuses primarily on whether – and if so then in what way – the thus understood algorithmic culture: 1) is functional with respect to consumption patterns represented by the so-called cultural omnivores in the context of modern attention economics; 2) contributes to changing evaluation standards for assessing cultural content quality and the status of professional criticism.

Opis:
The paper concerns experimental and numerical investigations focused on the cloud cavitation phenomenon over a hydrofoil. The results of flow visualization by means of a high- -speed camera are presented. The cavitation cycles including vapour structures occurrence, development and collapse were recorded and described. Within the numerical investigation, transient calculations of cavitating flow were performed. OpenFOAM software was used. To model mass transfer between phases, the Kunz cavitation model was chosen. Turbulences were modelled by means of k-ω SST model. The vapour areas appearance, their shapes and changes in time were described and compared with experimental results. The characteristic features of cavitating flow were observed, however further adjustment of the cavitation model was advised.

The article focuses on a theme of re-emerging infectious diseases (R-EIDs) in film productions and television series. Our aim was to show interaction between the epidemics, public reactions and contents of popular culture. The analysis depicts how popular culture tends to present fears of epidemics, as well as describes two other threads important to R-EIDs-related narrative: fear of possible collapse of modernity and fear of technological progress.
