Opis:
The aim of this paper was to prepare chitosan microspheres characterised by a narrow dispersion of dimensions, suitable for application for drug delivery systems (DDS). The materials, unmodified as well as functionalised using polyethyleneimine were then used for encapsulation of drug-mimicking dyes. The polymeric beads were prepared by one stage process of membrane emulsification. The encapsulation and then evaluation of the release of an active component was carried out using two cytostatics-mimicking dyes: methyl orange and Congo red. The efficiency of encapsulation changed with a type of microspheres and the type of a dye. The highest sorption towards dyes was revealed by PEI-modified chitosan microspheres. Methyl orange was released with the better efficiency than Congo red from all types of microspheres.

Opis:
Chitosan is naturally abundant biopolymer that could be used as chelating sorbent for removal of metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study the uniform-sized chitosan microspheres and their modified derivatives were prepared by using the one stage membrane emulsification process. The obtained sorbents were used for removal of chromium VI ions. The sorption evaluation was carried out at different initial ion concentrations and allowed to fit the experimental data to Langmuir isotherm in the case of unmodified materials and to Freundlich isotherm in the case of modified microspheres. The highest sorption towards chromium has been shown by unmodified chitosan with medium molecular weight. The calculated maximum sorption capacity for this polymer was found to be 1.6 mmol/g.

Portrait of a young man
Wawel
Anton van Dyck
Opis:
In 1910, Cracow art historian Professor Jerzy Mycielski bought Portrait of a young man, believing it to be a work by Dutch painter Jan Lievens, at an auction in Amsterdam. After Mycielski’s death in 1929, following his last will, the portrait along with his entire collection was bequeathed to the Wawel Royal Castle. In an article published in 1917 Hans Schneider saw the likeness of the painting to Rafael’s Portrait of a young man, which was then in the Duke Czartoryski collection. Attribution of the work to Lievens, who until recently was believed to be a student of Rembrandt, has never been questioned previously, although some researchers saw certain similarities between the painting and works by Juriaen Ovens or Govaert Flinck. The painting represents an “international” style of portrait, formed under the Flemish influence, in particular of Anton van Dyck’s portraits. Thus it should be assumed that the work of van Dyck was an important inspiration and point of reference for the artist who painted the portrait, who might have seen Rafael’s Portrait – the original, its copy or a graphic version. All the more so as van Dyck himself was familiar with Rafael’s work – he saw it during his journey to Italy in 1623 and made a copy in the form of drawing in his sketchbook. Other than a close a likeness to Rafael’s original and van Dyck’s works, the stylistic analysis of the Wawel Portrait does not enable pinpointing who painted it. Examination using technological means appears to be necessary, considering the fact that Lievens’ paintings were rather carefully examined in view of the recent monographic exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington and the Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam. The fact that the Wawel painting was included in Lievens’ works displayed at that exhibition seems to suggest that the ideas of those researchers who saw it as a work by Flinck or Ovens should be revisited. Flinck’s portraits based on Flemish models are only of marginal importance and they certainly do have some common features. They do not show any traces of fascination with van Dyck’s painting; neither are there any cues to suggest that he knew Rafael’s Portrait. On the other hand, Juriaen Ovens, who probably visited Italy, could have seen Rafael’s work. He might have come across a copy of it as a collector or as an antiquarian – since he not only had a large collection of paintings but also traded in antiquities. His fascination with van Dyck’s painting and the fact that he was familiar with his oeuvre is confirmed by his numerous sketches of paintings by the Flemish master. The analysis of some details of the Wawel portrait – folds of the young man’s outfit or landscape in the background – also seem to support the assumption that it is his work.

Opis:
This work describes the preparation of functional polymers containing 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole and guanylthiourea ligands from chemically modified vinylbenzyl chloride/divinylbenzene copolymer (VBC/DVB). The resins were used for the removal of Ag(I) from synthetic and real chloride solutions. The 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole resin was highly selective towards Ag(I) in relation to Pb(II) from real chloride leaching solution. The resins were selective for Ag(I) from real chloride solution and they did not sorb chloride complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II). The sorption kinetic data were well fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The degree of Ag(I) desorption was about 80% using 1% potassium cyanide solution in 0.5% hydrogen peroxide solution. Resins retain their capacity towards Ag(I) in five consecutive sorption/desorption cycles.

Opis:
In this study, the functional polymers containing heterocyclic ligands were synthesized by microwave modification of a crosslinked poly(vinylbenzyl chloride–divinylbenzene) matrix with 4-tertbutylpyridine, pyrrolidine, and 3-morpholinopropylamine. The sorbents were used to recover Ag(I) from the synthetic and real chloride solutions (4.00 mol/dm3 of NaCl, 0.100 mol/dm3 of HCl). The best Ag(I) sorption was achieved from synthetic and real chloride solutions in the case of pyrrolidine resin (16.2 and 16.7 mg/g, respectively). The sorption kinetic data were well fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The degree of silver desorption was approximately 90% using a 1.0% potassium cyanide solution in a 0.50% hydrogen peroxide solution. All resins showed good selectivity for Ag(I) compared to Cu(II), Pb(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) in real chloride solution. On the basis of this study, it can be concluded that the obtained sorbents can be used to recover Ag from various sources such as ores, wastewater, and jewelry scraps.

This work presents the synthesis of polymer resins with heterocyclic functional groups, that is, N-(3-aminopropyl)-2-pipecoline, N-(3-aminopropyl)-2-pyrrolidinone, and trans-1,4-diaminocyclohexane for the recovery of Ag(I) from chloride solutions. The modification yield was 69.2, 74.6 and 88.3%, respectively. The best Ag(I) sorption was achieved from synthetic and real chloride solutions in the case of trans-1,4-diaminocyclohexane resin (sorption was 26.8 and 21.5 mg/g, respectively). The sorption kinetic data were well fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The maximum sorption capacity of Ag(I) is 105.4, 117.8 and 130.7 mg Ag(I)/g for N-(3-aminopropyl)-2-pipecoline resin, N-(3-aminopropyl)-2-pyrrolidinone resin and trans-1,4-diaminocyclohexane resin, respectively. The trans-1,4-diaminocyclohexane modified resin was very selective towards Ag(I) compared to Cu(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) from the real chloride leaching solution. The N-(3-aminopropyl)-2-pipecoline and N-(3-aminopropyl)-2-pyrrolidinone resins showed high preferences for Ag(I) over Pb(II) in real solution. These results indicated that the polymers can be applied in the recovery of Ag(I).

The pentafluorosulfanyl (-SF5) moiety is a lesser known and underutilized functional group that displays high electronegativity, chemical and thermal stability, and low surface energy, among other useful properties. As a substituent it is known for almost 60 years, however practical application of the unique -SF5 group in various areas of chemistry has only recently picked up, mostly due to longstanding challenges associated with its synthetic accessibility. Most of the latest attention involving the use of -SF5 has been in medicinal chemistry, but it has also started to feature much more frequently in functional materials design, especially in the area of optoelectronic materials. This review will describe polymers and macromolecules containing -SF5 substituent which has been introduced mainly at the monomer stage.

The article takes up the problem of the structure of the last work of Mishima Yukio, the tetralogy Hōjō no umi (The Sea of Fertility). The book is considered to be Mishima’s opus magnum and his literary testament for the next generations. The article focuses on the Buddhist concept of transmigration which seems to be the writer’s structural trick on readers, a kind of perversive play in which the readers are not able to judge whether Mishima really believes in the concept of transmigration (jap. tenshō, sanskr. saṃsāra) or he is only mocking. Why did Mishima make this particular concept the axis of his book? The article aims at giving the answer to this question and suggests that the ultimate conclusion is yuishiki “consciousness only” (sanskr. vijñapti-mātratā).

Introduction. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a neuropathy caused by pressure on the median nerve taking a course in the carpal tunnel. The characteristic symptoms of CTS are: pain, numbness, and a prickling sensation in the hand usually at night or after the physical effort. Symptoms of the disease affect patient quality of life which is desribed as a subjective estimation of life situation. Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of patient life in those who suffer from carpal tunel syndrome. The studies were aimed to descripe the general quality of patient life and the effect of symptoms on individual aspects in the life of the afflicted. Materials and methods. The study sample was composed of 60 patients from rehabilitation and physiotherapy institutions located in the Lublin Voivodship (Poland). The studies were based on the questionnaries of life quality estimation dependent on health WHOQOL- BREF and EQ-5D-5L as well as on our own poll questionnaire. Conclusions. Symptoms of carpal tunel syndrome deteriorate the quality of patient life. Such patients have difficulties with daily activities. Among those examined, as many as 94.12% reported problems performing everyday actions (EQ – 5D – 5L). Difficulties with chores were reported by 86.70% of those examined. The patients with carpal tunel syndrome are less effective at work. Reduced achievements at work were reported by 73.30% of those examined, and a need for a shorter work day was reported by 60%. For 53.30%, difficulties in doing their jobs were significant; 20% of the examined had to change their profession or work station. The examined patients often experienced pain which deteriorated quality of sleep and disturbed everyday functioning. The patients were presented with serious difficulties in doing professional work.

Opis:
