Opis:
The novel method for structural analysis of quasicrystals with phason flips is presented. The correction for diffraction peaks' intensities can be made within average unit cell approach by modification of the statistical distribution of atomic positions. Characteristic function of the distribution expanded into moment series, involving only even moments, estimates the envelope function and therefore the flip ratio can be evaluated.

The generalized Penrose tiling is an infinite set of decagonal tilings. It is constructed with the same rhombs (thick and thin) as the conventional Penrose tiling, but its long-range order depends on the so-called shift parameter sın łangle 0,1). The formula for structure factor, calculated within the average unit cell approach, works in physical space only and is directly dependent on the s parameter. It allows to straightforwardly change the long-range order of the refined structure just by changing the s parameter and keeping the tile decoration unchanged. The possibility and viability of using the shift as one of the refinement parameters during structure refinement was tested for a numerically generated simple binary decagonal quasicrystal.

Opis:
We report on AlGaN/GaN quantum point contacts fabricated by using e-beam lithography and dry ion etching. The tunable nano-constrictions are defined by the integration of side and top gates in a single device. In this configuration, the planar gates are located on the both sides of a quantum channel and the metallic top gates, which cover the active region, are separated from the substrate by an insulating and passivating layers of $HfO_2$ or $Al_2O_3//HfO_2$ composite. The properties of devices have been tested at T = 4.2 K. For side gates we have obtained a very small surface leakage current $I_g < 10^{-11}$ A at gate voltages $|V_g|$ < 2 V, however, it is not enough to close the quantum channel. With top gates we have been able to reach the pinch-off voltage at $V_g$ = - 3.5 V at a cost of $I_g ≈ 10^{-6} A$, which has been identified as a bulk leakage current.

Opis:
Ab initio methods of DNA regulatory sequence region prediction known as transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) are a very big challenge to modern bioinformatics. Although the currently available methods are not perfect they are fairly reliable and can be used to search for new potential protein-DNA interaction sites. The biggest problem of ab initio approaches is the very high false positive rate of predicted sites which results mainly from the fact that TFBS are very short and highly degenerate. Because of that they can occur by chance every few hundred bases making the task of computational prediction extremely difficult if one aims to reduce the high false positive rate keeping highest possible sensitivity to predict biologically meaningful sequence regions. In this work we present a new application that can be used to predict TFBS regions in very large datasets based on position weight matrix models (PWM’s) using one of the most popular prediction methods. The presented application was used to predict the concentration of TFBS in a set of nearly 2.2 thousand unique sequences of human gene promoter regions. The study revealed that the concentration of TFBS further than 1kbp from the transcription initiation site is constant but it decreases rapidly while getting closer to the transcription initiation site. The decreasing TFBS concentration in the vicinity of genes might result from evolutionary selection which keeps only sites responsible for interactions with proteins being part of a specific regulatory mechanism leading to cells survival.

W artykule przedstawiono problematykę badawczą dotyczącą elektryzacji strumieniowej. Rozwijana była ona początkowo w Katedrze Elektroenergetyki, później w Katedrze Inżynierii Materiałowej i Elektrycznej. Inspirowały ją przede wszystkim zagrożenia izolacji transformatorów energetycznych z wymuszonym przepływem oleju, gdzie zjawiska elektryzacji prowadziły do przebicia izolacji i awarii transformatorów.
In paper research problems of streaming electrification is presented. This matter has been developed at the Electrical Engineering Institute in Chair of Material and Electrical Engineering. The research projects were inspired by menace in power transformer insulation with forced oil cooling system. The streaming electrification lead to insulations breakdown and other failures in these systems.

Using a statistical approach a simple formula for the structure factor of decorated Fibonacci chain was derived. Although the used method operates in the physical space only, its equivalence to the higher-dimensional analysis was proved. Applications of the analysis to different decorated structures were also discussed.

Przedstawiono badania sorpcji chromu(III), występującego w roztworach wodnych w formie kationu, i Cr(VI) występującego jako anion na węglu aktywnym ROW 08. Proces ten prowadzony był z roztworów jednoskładnikowego oraz dwuskładnikowych zawierających dodatkowo kationy ołowiu, kadmu, niklu, miedzi lub cynku. Proces prowadzono z roztworów o pH wyjściowym wynoszącym dla roztworów z Cr(VI) od 5,8 do 7,6, a z Cr(III) od 3,8 do 5,4 oraz dla pH = 6. W przypadku sorpcji Cr(III) obecność w roztworze wszystkich badanych kationów powoduje zmniejszenie efektów sorpcji, przy czym najmniejszy wpływ na to zjawisko ma Cd. Podobne zależności zaobserwowano podczas sorpcji Cr(VI) z roztworów zawierających dodatkowo kation innego metalu ciężkiego. Pomimo tego, że chrom(VI) występuje w postaci anionu, a pozostałe metale ciężkie w postaci kationu, ich obecność w roztworze powoduje zmniejszenie pojemności sorpcyjnych.
The subject of the submitted paper is the sorption of chromium(III) occurring in aqueous solutions in a cationic form and Cr(VI) occurring as an anion on ROW 08 grade carbon. The process was carried out on single-component and binary solutions containing additionally the cations of lead, cadmium, nickel, copper or zinc. The sorption was conducted from solutions of an initial pH from 5.8 to 7.6 for Cr(VI) solutions and from 3.8 to 5.4 for Cr(III) solutions, as well as for pH = 6. In the case of Cr(III) sorption, the presence of all of the cations examined in the solution reduces the sorption results, with the least effect on this phenomenon being shown by Cd. Similar relationships were observed during Cr(VI) sorption from solutions containing additionally another heavy metal cation. In spite of the fact that the chromium(VI) occurs in an anionic form, while the other heavy metals in a cationic form, the presence of the latter in the solution reduces the sorption capacity.

Recently a new technology of piezoelectric transducers based on PZT thick film has been developed as a response to a call for devices working at higher frequencies suitable for production in large numbers at low cost. Eight PZT thick film based focused transducers with resonant frequency close to 40 MHz were fabricated and experimentally investigated. The PZT thick films were deposited on acoustically engineered ceramic substrates by pad printing. Considering high frequency and nonlinear propagation it has been decided to evaluate the axial pressure field emitted (and reflected by thick metal plate) by each of concave transducer differing in radius of curvature – 11 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm. All transducers were activated using AVTEC AVG-3A-PS transmitter and Ritec diplexer connected directly to Agilent 54641D oscilloscope. As anticipated, in all cases the focal distance was up to 10% closer to the transducer face than the one related to the curvature radius. Axial pressure distributions were also compared to the calculated ones (with the experimentally determined boundary conditions) using the angular spectrum method including nonlinear propagation in water. The computed results are in a very good agreement with the experimental ones. The trans- ducers were excited with Golay coded sequences at 35–40 MHz. Introducing the coded excitation allowed replacing the short-burst transmission at 20 MHz with the same peak amplitude pressure, but with almost double center frequency, resulting in considerably better axial resolution. The thick films exhibited at least 30% bandwidth broadening comparing to the standard PZ 27 transducer, resulting in an increase in matching filtering output by a factor of 1.4–1.5 and finally resulting in a SNR gain of the same order.

Apart from the basic input, the right course of fermentation process is determined by the appropriate microorganism populations and the parameters such as: pH, particle size, ionic strength (salinity) and concentration of nutrients and toxic compounds. Three microorganism groups are involved in the process of anaerobic transformation of organic substances in fermentation gas: acid forming bacteria, acetate bacteria and methanogenic bacteria. The first two phases are dominated by the bacteria which are both obligate, facultative and absolute anaerobes (Clostridium spp., Bifidobacterium spp., Streptococcus spp., Enterobacter spp., Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas spp., Aerobacter spp., Alcaligenes spp, Escherichia spp, Lactobacillus spp, Micrococcus spp. czy Flavobacterium spp.) [Nimmrichter, Kuebler, 1999]. Their number during the mesophile fermentation is estimated for between 108-109 per 1ml [Hartman, 1999]. The rate of bacteria growth at both phases fluctuates from 5 hrs, in the presence of carbohydrates to 72 hrs during fat decomposition [Heidrich, Nieścier, 1999]. Presented research aimed at determining the quantity and quality of biogas depending on the microbiological environment in fractions originating from agriculture and agro-food industry. To achieve the objective of research, was evaluated the number and biodiversity of microorganisms that inhabit selected agricultural raw materials used in the production of biogas. A very important aspect of the study was to investigate the species composition of the bacteria and fungi population at different stages of fermentation process. Isolation of microorganisms from selected agricultural raw materials that stimulate the production of biogas could contribute in the future to optimize the process of its obtaining. The following substrates were used in the investigations: distillery’s grain, ensilaged beet pulp, rapeseed cake from biofuel manufacturing, apple pulp, fresh brewer’s grains (wet), corn silage harvested by silage harvester without grain squeezer, corn silage harvested by silage harvester combined with grain squeezer, cellulose from paper industry. Results of analysis of biogass yield in relation to dry mass revealed the highest productivity of the input from waste cellulose from paper industry at low productivity of biomass from agri-food industry. A delay in biogas volume increment visible in the course of fermentation of inputs from agri-food industry biomass is caused by the pasteurization of the mass which lacks microbiological environment, where microorganisms of methane fermentation multiply very slowly. The strongest inhibition of growth and delay in biogass formation was observed in the inputs made on the basis of distillery’s grains and fresh brewers’ grains. A normal productivity of biogass generation was obtained for the inputs prepared from cellulose and corn silage harvested by silage harvester equipped with grain squeezer.

The statistical approach based on the average unit cell concept was recently successfully applied to structural modelling of icosahedral quasicrystals. The structure factor for arbitrarily decorated icosahedral structure was derived for model Ammann tiling (3D Penrose tiling). It is a fully physical-space model where no higher-dimensional description is needed. In the present paper we show the application of the model to the so-called simple decoration scheme - atomic decoration in the nodes, at mid-edges and along body-diagonal of structural units of 3D Penrose tiling. By analyzing the obtained calculated diffraction patterns we show the correctness of the model and its applicability to binary and ternary icosahedral phases.

One of the challenges of modern crystallography of complex systems (complex metallic alloys, proteins, aperiodic crystals and quasicrystals) is to properly describe the disorder in these systems and discuss correctly the refinement results in terms of the structural disorder. In this paper we briefly discuss a new approach to phasons and phonons in quasicrystals and focus on the new theory of phonons in these materials. A newly derived correction factor for phonons in the form of the Bessel function is the approximated way of describing optic modes in the phonon spectra of quasicrystals. It is applied to a real decagonal quasicrystal in the Al-Cu-Rh system with 56/38 atoms per thick/thin structural unit, based on 2092 unique reflections selected from the collected diffraction data, significantly improving the refinement results. The final R-factor value is 7.24%, which is over 0.5% better result comparing to originally reported. We believe our work will open a broader discussion on the disorder in quasicrystals (and other aperiodic systems) and motivate to develop new approaches to treat the diffraction data influenced by different types of disorder in the new way.

We derive a structure model for icosahedral quasicrystals. The model is based on a statistical approach involving the concept of average unit cell. This approach enables limiting calculations to real space as opposed to higher-dimensional analysis involving to unphysical atomic surface modeling. We start with the three-dimensional Ammann tiling with its two rhombohedral prototiles. For monoatomic decoration of the lattice nodes the perfect agreement with the higher-dimensional description was recently shown. In this paper we discuss the shape of the average unit cell and the first attempts for decoration scheme.

Drug resistance and phase dependence have been regarded by many authors as the main obstacles against successful cancer chemotherapy. We propose a model which takes into account both these phenomena and give a tool to use phase specificity as an advantage rather than a fault and make it resistant of drug resistance. It combines models that so far have been studied separately, taking into account both the phenomenon of gene amplification and drug specificity in chemotherapy, in their different aspects. The mathematical description is given by an infinite dimensional state equation with a system matrix, the form of which enables decomposition of the model into two interacting subsystems. While the first one, of finite dimension, can have any form, the second one is infinite dimensional and tridiagonal.
