Scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence and secondary ion mass spectroscopy investigations are used to study an inter-link between structural quality, elements distribution and light emission properties of ZnO poly- and monocrystalline films grown by the atomic layer deposition. Cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy investigations were performed at liquid helium temperature for four different types of ZnO films deposited on different substrates.

We employ scanning electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence for evaluation of uniformity of ZnCoO films obtained by the atomic layer deposition. Cathodoluminescence quenching by Co ions allows us to detect (regions of weaker light emission) Co accumulations, with the resolution limited by diffusion length of secondary carriers.

Opis:
An important feature of zinc oxide and gallium nitride materials are their similar physical properties. This allows to use them as a p-n junction materials for applications in optoelectronics. In earlier work we presented use of ZnO as a transparent contact to GaN, which may improve external efficiency of LED devices. In this work we discuss properties of a n-ZnO/p-GaN heterostructure and discuss its optimization. The heterostructure is investigated by us for possible applications, e.g. in a new generation of UV LEDs or UV light detectors.

Krótko omówiono optyczne techniki pomiaru odległości możliwe do zastosowań w robotyce. Zaprezentowano nową konstrukcję dalmierza laserowego opartą na metodzie modulacji amplitudy. Omówiono zasadę działania skonstruowanego dalmierza wraz z algorytmem sterowania pomiarem. Przedstawiono przykładowe wyniki pomiarów odległości.
The paper briefly discuses optical techniques of distance measurement useful for robotics applications. A new construction of a laser rangefinder based on the method of amplitude modulation is presented. The principle of operation of the rangefinder as well as algorithm of measurement control are described. Experimentally measurement results have been provided.

Opis:
Diagnostic performance of ID Screen® MVV-CAEV Indirect Screening ELISA in identifying goats infected with small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) was evaluated. In total 299 serum samples from the collection of the Laboratory of Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics - 109 truly positive and 190 truly negative - were used. To be enrolled in the study a serum sample had to come from at least 2 year-old goat which had reacted identically in two serological surveys preceding sample collection and was kept in a herd of stable serological status confirmed at least twice during preceding 5 years. Moreover, in seropositive herds at least 20% of goats had to be serologically positive at the moment when the serum sample was collected for the study. The test proved to have high accuracy. Area under curve was 98.8% (95% CI: 97.5%, 100%). Diagnostic performance of the test was almost identical (Youlden’s index of 90%, sensitivity >90% and specificity >95%) within a fairly wide range of cut-off values - between 20% and 60%. At manufacturer’s cut-off of 50% sensitivity and specificity were 91.7% (95% CI: 85.0%, 95.6%) and 98.9% (95% CI: 96.2%, 99.7%), respectively. For this cut-off positive likelihood ratio was 87 (95% CI: 22, 346) and negative likelihood ratio was 0.08 (95% CI: 0.04, 0.16). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that ID Screen® MVV-CAEV Indirect Screening ELISA is a highly accurate diagnostic test for SRLV infection.

Opis:
Monocrystalline films of zinc oxide were grown at 300C by atomic layer deposition. ZnO layers were grown on various substrates like ZnO bulk crystal, GaN, SiC and $Al_2O_3$. Electrical properties of the films depend on structural quality. Structural quality, surface morphology and optical properties of ZnO films were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and photoluminescence, respectively. High resolution X-ray diffraction spectra show that the rocking curve FWHM of the symmetrical 00.2 reflection equals to 0.058° and 0.009° for ZnO deposited on a gallium nitride template and a zinc oxide substrate, respectively. In low temperature photoluminescence sharp excitonic lines in the band-edge region with a FWHM equal to 4 meV, 5 meV and 6 meV, for zinc oxide deposited on gallium nitride, zinc oxide and sapphire substrate, respectively.

Introduction and objective: The growing expectations for the effectiveness of public health increase the demand for scientific literature, concerning research, reviews and other forms of information. The bibliographic databases are of crucial importance for researchers and policy makers. The objective of this study is to estimate the supply of scientific literature related to public health in selected European countries, which are available to a wide range of users. Materials and methods: Analysis of the number of bibliographic records on topics related to public health was based on searches in Ovid MEDLINE ( R) in May and June 2011. According to MeSH terms, 11 keywords and names of 13 European countries were used in the search. Publications from the years 2001–2010 were analyzed. A number of publications indexed under ‘public health’, and related to selected countries were compared with the size of the population of those countries, GDP, total expenditure on health and burden of disease (DALYS’s). Results: The most popular topic was ‘health policy’, whereas the topics ‘occupational health’ and ‘environmental health’ were less prevalent. There were no significant changes in the number of publications in 2001–2010. The number of articles indexed under ‘public health’ had significant positive correlation with national GDP, expenditure on health and population size, and negative with DALY’s. Conclusions: According to the criteria accepted in this study, the Nordic countries – Finland, Sweden and Norway – were very productive in this respect. Poland and other Central European Countries were less productive.

Opis:
Zinc oxide is a II-VI semiconductor material which is gaining increasing interest in various fields such as biology, medicine or electronics. This semiconductor reveals very special physical and chemical properties, which imply many applications including a transparent electrode in solar cells or LED diodes. Among many applications, ZnO is also a prospective material for sensor technology, where developed surface morphology is very advantageous. In this work we present ZnO nanowires growth using atomic layer deposition method. ZnO nanowires were obtained using controlled physical properties. As a substrate we used gallium arsenide with gold-gallium eutectic droplets prepared on the surface at high temperature. To obtain the eutectic solution there was put a gold thin film on GaAs through the sputtering and then we annealed the sample in a nitrogen gas flow. The so-prepared substrate was applied for growth of ZnO nanowires. We used deionized water and zinc chloride as oxygen and zinc precursors, respectively. The eutectic mixture serves as a catalyst for the ZnO nanowires growth. Au-Ga droplets flow on the front of ZnO nanowires. Scanning electron microscopy images show ZnO nanorods in a form of crystallites of up to 1 μm length and a 100 nm diameter. It is the first demonstration of the ZnO nanowires growth by atomic layer deposition using the vapour-liquid-solid approach.

Opis:
Four series of ZnO nanopowders obtained by a microwave hydrothermal method are examined. Two different solvents (ethanol and distilled water) and different values of pressure during heating in the reactor were used. The obtained nanopowders show a bright emission covering visible light spectral region, including the band edge emission. Results of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photo- and cathodoluminescence investigations and also CIE1961 chromaticity diagram are presented.

Prof. Jerzy Zdzisław Holzer, through his studies and academic career, was linked with the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) for more than 50 years. He worked at SGH from September 1950, when he became a junior assistant at the Faculty of Statistics, until his sudden death on Sept. 29, 2001. The author presents the professor’s biography and scientific achievements, both at home and abroad, and his contribution to the academic community, including his work as director of the Institute of Statistics and Demography in 1978-1999. Prof. Holzer set up a team of demographers and prepared them for work on the international arena. Managing demographic research in Poland and establishing ties with international researchers, Prof. Holzer contributed to the development of Polish demography and its international acclaim. The article sheds new light on the life of this internationally-renowned scholar, showing him as a wonderful man loved and admired by his students, colleagues and friends. These warm feelings climaxed after the professor’s death. In a series of recollections published in a special issue of Studia Demograficzne (No. 2/140 of 2001), Holzer is portrayed as a “humanist sensu largo,” as Prof. J. Tazbir put it. He was a man of extensive scientific interests, profound knowledge and wisdom, concerned about the common good, well-wishing and showing respect for everyone around him. These accounts yield the image of a steadfast man of indomitable spirit, faithful to his value system and principles. His reliability and responsible treatment of his duties met with general appreciation and admiration. He always set high requirements not only for others but first of all for himself. As a result, whatever he turned his hand to was remarkably proficient. Statements by various people from both the Polish and European demographic communities-representing different disciplines of the professor’s endeavor-add up to a surprisingly uniform image of Prof. Holzer as a truly exceptional figure.
