Background The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of hand grip strength (HGS) test in identifying highly stressed individuals and to examine the effect of exercise and lifestyle on HGS and stress measures. Material and methods It is cross-sectional study. Students of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Poland were asked to fill out a questionnaire, undergo body composition analysis, perform HGS test and provide a saliva sample for cortisol measurement. Results Self-rated stress (SRS) was significantly higher in pre-clinical years (PCY) compared to clinical years (CY). HGS was significantly lower in PCY males than CY males. Participants who performed some form of exercise had significantly higher HGS compared with those who did not exercise. A positive correlation between HGS and BMI was noted. Students with low HGS were found to have lower levels of salivary cortisol (SC). However, there was no significant difference in SC levels between PCY and CY students. Conclusions HGS may be a reliable method of identifying stressed individuals and promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. HGS testing is a safe, cheap and easy to perform method for a large number of participants while being time economical.

Opis:
This article deals with the subject matter of improvement of the acoustic emission methods used for location of partial discharges, which may occur inside power transformer insulation systems. Analytical solutions of spherical equations for location of partial discharge generation using the acoustic method were shown in detail. Presented in the article method of solving the assumed equations is based on the analytical method and matrix notation. Theoretical considerations and later the measurement-based verification refer to the use of the triangulation method for location of the occurrence of partial discharges. The results of the scientific and research works that have been presented in this article are the next stage of research aimed at development of on-line diagnosis system for insulation systems of electrical equipment, allowing for detection, measurement and identification of forms and locations of partial discharges using the acoustic emission method.

We report details of the apparatus and the experimental procedure leading to production of the Bose-Einstein condensate of $\text{}^{87}Rb$ atoms. Basic hydrodynamic properties of the condensate, like quadrupole oscillations and free fall expansion, are investigated. They provide also characteristics of the magnetic trap crucial for interpretation of future experiments.

Introduction and objective: The growing expectations for the effectiveness of public health increase the demand for scientific literature, concerning research, reviews and other forms of information. The bibliographic databases are of crucial importance for researchers and policy makers. The objective of this study is to estimate the supply of scientific literature related to public health in selected European countries, which are available to a wide range of users. Materials and methods: Analysis of the number of bibliographic records on topics related to public health was based on searches in Ovid MEDLINE ( R) in May and June 2011. According to MeSH terms, 11 keywords and names of 13 European countries were used in the search. Publications from the years 2001–2010 were analyzed. A number of publications indexed under ‘public health’, and related to selected countries were compared with the size of the population of those countries, GDP, total expenditure on health and burden of disease (DALYS’s). Results: The most popular topic was ‘health policy’, whereas the topics ‘occupational health’ and ‘environmental health’ were less prevalent. There were no significant changes in the number of publications in 2001–2010. The number of articles indexed under ‘public health’ had significant positive correlation with national GDP, expenditure on health and population size, and negative with DALY’s. Conclusions: According to the criteria accepted in this study, the Nordic countries – Finland, Sweden and Norway – were very productive in this respect. Poland and other Central European Countries were less productive.

Background: Hucul horses are the unique, genetically distinct breed of Carpathian Mountains. Even though they are recognized as primitive breed, many morphological differences between them and other primitive horses have been reported. Neither hematological nor blood biochemical studies in this breed have been conducted so far. Objectives: The aim of this study was to establish the reference intervals for basic hematological and selected biochemical variables and to compare them with other breeds. Material and Methods: Blood samples were collected from 168 Hucul horses and the analyses were performed using routine methods. Mainly nonparametric method was used to establish reference intervals. Results: The following reference intervals have been established (rounded to two significant digits): RBC: 7.0-13x1012/l; HGB: 106.1-195.8 g/l; HCT: 0.3-0.6 l/l; MCV: 35-50 fl; MCH 11.9-17.1 pg; MCHC: 31.9-34.8 g/dl; WBC: 7.5-22x109/l, bands: 0-0.5x109/l; segmented neutrophils: 3.3-10x109/l; eosinophils: 0-1.1x109/l; basophils: 0-0.3x109/l; lymphocytes: 1.9-12x109/l; monocytes: 0-0.2x109/l; PLT 95-350x109/l; MPV 5.2-7.0; ALP: 98-425 U/l; AST: 220-470 U/l; GGT: 9.1-31 U/l; total bilirubin: 6.5-29 μmol/l; CPK: 120-640 U/l; triglycerides: 0.1-0.9 mmol/l; urea: 3.8-11 mmol/l; creatinine: 44 -140 μmol/l; serum amyloid A: 130-5200 μg/l. Conclusions: Hematological and biochemical variables in Hucul horses were closer to hot-blooded then to cold-blooded and primitive horses or wild equidae. The reference intervals presented in this study pose clinically useful tool for evaluation of blood check-up in Hucul horses.

Wykonanie modeli przepływu wód podziemnych powinno opierać się na skonstruowanym wcześniej wiarygodnym modelu konceptualnym, którego podstawowym elementem jest odpowiednio zinterpretowana i zgeneralizowana informacja o budowie geologicznej systemu hydrogeologicznego. Wiodące firmy opracowują nowoczesne, specjalistyczne programy, które pozwalają na przygotowywanie modeli konceptualnych oraz ich implementację do programów modelowych typu Modflow oraz FeFlow. Przykładem takiego programu jest HydroGeo Builder (HGB). Przy jego pomocy konstruuje się model strukturalny (geologiczny) ośrodka hydrogeologicznego, który po uzupełnieniu o właściwości hydrogeologiczne oraz warunki brzegowe tworzy właściwy model konceptualny. Artykuł prezentuje sposób wykorzystania tego programu do konstrukcji 9-ciowarstwowego modelu budowy geologicznej dla obszaru zlewni bezpośredniej zbiornika Goczałkowice, której powierzchnia wynosi 64,7 km2. Model budowy geologicznej czwartorzędowego piętra wodonośnego zostanie wykorzystany przy opracowywaniu matematycznego modelu przepływu wód podziemnych w ramach realizacji strategicznego projektu badawczego „Zintegrowany system wspomagający zarządzaniem i ochroną zbiornika zaporowego (ZiZOZap)”.
The creation of groundwater flow models should be based on a reliable conceptual model. Its main element is interpreted and generalised information about geological structure of the flow system. Leading companies develop special programs used for preparation of conceptual models, and enable their implementation in the Modflow or FeFlow systems. Among such programs is the HydroGeo Builder (HGB), using which the user can prepare a structural model and add hydrogeological parameters and boundary conditions. The paper presents the way of using the HGB for the construction of nine-layered structural model of the direct catchment of Goczałkowice reservoir (64 km2 in area). Structural model of the Quaternary aquifer will be used in groundwater modelling within the ZiZOZap project.
