    Author and Translator: Two Full-Fledged Characters? On the Feminist Translation in Canada Based on the Example of Lettres d’une autre by Lise Gauvin and “Feminine Translation” by Susanne de Lotbinière-Harwood Among many translation activities characteristic for Canada, a “feminine translation”, meaning an act of re-creation, is particularly worth mentioning. One of its representatives is Susanne de Lotbinière-Harwood, a translator of the texts of Quebec feminists, including Lise Gauvin’s Lettres d’une autre (1984) translated into English in 1989 (Letters from an Other). De Lotbinière-Harwood’s translation caused controversy, as - according to the critics - she explained to much to a reader, inserted too many footnotes and feminized the text more than the original. The translation activity of de Lotbnière-Harwood proves how, by using the creative approach to translation, the act of translation itself becomes visible, and the feminization of the target text creates a space for female expression also in a real world.     Transfiguration est un recueil poétique dans lequel non seulement la création se transforme en traduction, mais de plus, c’est la traduction qui déclenche un acte créateur. Deux poètes canadiens, un Anglophone E.D. Blodgett et un Francophone Jacques Brault, mènent un dialogue original : chacun écrit un poème dans sa langue maternelle, et puis, chaque fragment consécutif constitue une réponse à un poème précédent, ce qui constitue une mosaïque franco-anglaise extraordinaire. Qui plus est, tout le recueil est doté d’une dimension traductologique, comme c’est Brault qui traduit les poèmes de Blodgett et vice versa. Le recueil sans précédent constitue l’un des rares exemples d’une liaison entre les deux cultures : québécoise et canadienne. De surcroît, il est une illustration intéressante du phénomène provenant de la charnière des cultures, langues et activités créatives. Le présent article décrit la spécificité de l’écriture bilingue et cherche à répondre à la question sur des possibilités de traduire un texte ainsi construit vers une troisième langue.
    Transfiguration is a poetry collection in which not only creation is transformed into translation, but it is translation that triggers an act of creative writing. Two Canadian poets, an Anglophone - Edward D. Blodgett and a Francophone - Jacques Brault, conduct an original dialogue: each of them writes a poem in his mother tongue, and then each consecutive fragment is a response to a previous poem, which is an interesting French and English mosaic. Moreover, the volume also gains a strictly translative dimension, as it is Brault who translates Blodgett’s poems and vice versa. The unprecedented collection is one of the rare examples of a connection between the two cultures. Furthermore, it is an interesting illustration of the phenomenon of border crossing between cultures, languages and creative activities. The article describes the specificity of bilingual writing and seeks to answer the question about the possibilities of translating a bilingual text into a third language.
    Transfiguration to zbiór poetycki, w którym twórczość nie tylko płynnie przekształca się w przekład, lecz także przekład staje się punktem wyjścia dla aktu twórczego. Dwaj poeci kanadyjscy: anglojęzyczny Edward D. Blodgett oraz francuskojęzyczny Jacques Brault, prowadzą niezwykły dialog: każdy z nich pisze wiersz w swoim języku ojczystym, a kolejny utwór to odpowiedź na wiersz poprzedni, co stanowi ciekawą francusko-angielską przeplatankę. Co więcej, cały tomik zyskał także wymiar ściśle przekładowy, jako że został przetłumaczony w ten sposób, że Brault tłumaczy na język francuski utwory Blodgetta, który z kolei przekłada wiersze kolegi na język angielski. Ze wszech miar oryginalny zbiór stanowi jeden z rzadkich przejawów połączenia obu literatur: quebeckiej i kanadyjskiej oraz ciekawą ilustrację zjawiska pogranicza kultur, języków i działań (od)twórczych. W artykule opisano specyfikę tego rodzaju dwujęzycznej i dwukulturowej twórczości, próbując znaleźć odpowiedź na pytanie, czy możliwy jest przekład tak skonstruowanego tekstu na język trzeci.

    The article aims to present the particularities of the English translation of Lise Gauvin’s novel Lettres d’une autre by a Canadian feminist translator, Suzanne de LotbinièreHarwood. The purpose of the translation was to make the Quebec culture closer to the English speaking Canadians. Moreover, de Lotbinière-Harwood intended to emphasize feminist issues. Indubitably, such a project goes beyond the stereotypical function of translation as the translator herself is clearly visible in the text. The specificity of the de Lotbinière-Harwood’s translation encourages the reflection on the problematic border between a translation sensu stricto and a translation being at the same time some kind of explanation. The article seeks to answer to the following questions: is a literary translator “only” a transmitter of meanings invented by the author or a guide in the unknown world? Is he also a full-fledged author? In addition, the article considers how far a translator is allowed to be visible in a text, in particular, if he aims to explain culture.

    The article concerns the Polish translation of Les Années by Annie Ernaux, published by Czarne in 2022. Translators, Krzysztof Jarosz and Magdalena Budzinska, who is also the editor of the volume, filled out a questionnaire proposed by the author of the article that aims to find out the strategy regarding cultural elements, but also the presence of footnotes. The article contains the analysis of various types of footnotes and various strategies resulting from translation dominant selected by the translators, visible in the Polish translation.

    The article aims to take a close look at the literary relations between English- and French-speaking Canada. Among different possibilities, the author analyzes specific cases concerning literary prizes, in particular winners of the Governor General’s Prize in the category of translation. As it is one of the most prestigious awards in Canada, it undoubtedly conditions the reception of a literary work, being a symbol of prestige. The choice of the jury can sometimes seem surprising or even confusing, as it was the case of Nancy Huston or Jacques Brault who won the prize in the category of translation. Without a doubt, the specificity of the translation à la canadienne goes beyond any distinctions and descriptions and – being also a political issue – revolts against all control and all interference.

    RESUME | Parmi un grand nombre de phenomenes lies a la traduction, caracteris- tiques pour le Canada, on peut detecter « la traduction au feminin » ou l’acte de re-crea- tion. Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood, la traductrice des textes de feministes quebecoises, y compris ceux de Lise Gauvin, dont le roman/essai intitule Lettres dune autre (1984) elle a traduit vers l’anglais en 1989 (Letters from an Other) en est une des plus eminentes repre- sentantes. Sa traduction a suscite de vives polemiques, car — selone les critiques — la tra¬ductrice a trop explique au lecteur, a utilise un nombre excessif de notes et a trop feminise le texte par rapport a l’original. L’activite traduisante de Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood demontre comment une approche creative a la traduction la rend plus visible et de quelle maniere la feminisation du texte d’arrivee cree un espace propice a une expression femi- nine dans un monde reel.

    Wśród wielu zjawisk związanych z przekładem charakterys¬tycznych dla Kanady znajduje się „przekład w rodzaju żeńskim”, czyli akt ponownego tworzenia. Jedną z jego reprezentantek jest Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood, tłumaczka tekstów quebeckich feministek, w tym Lise Gauvin, której tekst zatytułowany Lettres dune autre (1984) przełożyła na język angielski w 1989 roku (Letters from an Other). Swoim przekładem tłumaczka wywołała kontrowersje, zbyt wiele — zdaniem krytyków — wy¬jaśniając czytelnikowi, umieszczając za dużo przypisów oraz feminizując tekst bardziej niż oryginał. Działalność przekładowa S. de Lotbiniere-Harwood udowadnia, w jaki sposób, poprzez wykorzystanie przez tłumacza twórczego podejścia do tłumaczenia, sam akt przekładu staje się widoczny, a feminizacja tekstu docelowego tworzy przestrzeń dla kobiecej ekspresji także w realnym świecie.

    The article is an attempt to classify the novel of Gabrielle Gourdeau entitled “Maria Chapdelaine ou le Paradis retrouvé”, which retells the story of the emblematic character of French-Canadian literature (formerly portrayed by Louis Hémon in his novel “Maria Chapdelaine”). With the use of the theory of “hypertext” by Gérard Genette, the author shows that Gourdeau does not merely “continue” Hémon’s narrative but re-visions and re-invents the character of Maria Chapdelaine, by means of such techniques as transposition, transtylization and transvalorization. Key-words: intertextuality; hypertext; the Maria Chapdelaine myth; continuation; transposition

    The purpose of this analysis is to discuss the panorama of stories in Quebec, having a strong cultural background and dialoguing with different traditions. The authors of the article first outline the past of the story, originally oral, but enriched in the nineteenth century by a written version thanks to many writers. Thereafter, they make an inventory of the most common characters and motifs of traditional storytelling. However, even if the story is undoubtedly an integral part of the literary and cultural heritage of Quebec as evidenced by a long tradition of storytelling, it is definitely not homogeneous as among Quebec stories one can find particularly those classified as historical, anecdotal and supernatural. On top of this, stories change considerably with transformations in the Quebec society in the first half of the twentieth century. Even today, stories and storytellers are a major element in the cultural landscape of Canada, whether in literature or in the mass media, including television and the internet. Throughout the last century the story had moments of glory and decline, with a real revival in the 1990s. In order to illustrate new trends in the story that overlap with the old tradition, the authors focus on the creation of Fred Pellerin, a young artist, author of several collections of written and oral stories, who uses patterns and characters of ancient stories by giving them quite modern accents.
