Opis:
During modeling of short-run exchange rate fluctuations, there is usually a need for taking into consideration some random-type conditions, i.e. it is necessary to abandon the fundamental exchange rate theories in favor of probabilistic modeling. Among stochastic models, of special interest are Markov models. The main advantages of Markov models include a relative simplicity of construction, easy inferences, well-known estimation methods and especially consistence of properties of these models with the observed properties of many real phenomena. Application of switching models is based on a general assumption that the examined time series can be presented as sequences of random variables of a known type of conditional distribution in all regimes. Known from literature propositions concerning the modeling of exchange rate with the use of switching models did not provide sufficiently good forecasts of the future exchange rate levels because of, among others, low frequency of data used for the construction of the model (quarterly or monthly data). The authors are going to continue the examination of the PLN exchange rate fluctuation with the use of Markov models that was started in this paper. The next stage of their work will be connected with conducting empirical research concerning the occurrence of calendar anomalies in the Polish currency market. For this purpose, a new method based on the Markov chains theory will be applied, which offers a new perspective to this problem. Testing o f the calendar time hypothesis has been considered so far mostly in the aspect of comparison of daily expected values and variances of exchange rate return rates. Then, on the basis of the da ta concerning exchange rates for high measurement frequency, a Ma rkov switching model will be constructed and used for description of the PLN depreciation and appreciation period.
Prawidłowe oszacowanie kierunku zmian kursu wymiany może zmniejszyć ryzyko inwestycji w walutę lub może pozwolić na osiągnięcie większych dochodów z tej inwestycji. W opracowaniu tym autorzy przedstawiają propozycję zastosowania modeli Markowa do wykrycia i opisania prawidłowości rządzących procesem zmienności kursu walutowego. W pierwszej części została wykorzystana teoria łańcuchów Markowa do badania anomalii kalendarzowych występujących n a rynku walutowym związanych z efektem weekendowym lub efektem stycznia. W artykule przedstawiona została również metoda o parta na teorii łańcuchów Markowa, k tó ra może posłużyć d o zbadania wzajemnych powiązań pomiędzy zmiennością wolumenu obrotu oraz zmiennością cen dla terminowych kontraktów walutowych. W drugiej części zostaną przedstawione zagadnienia związane z budową i estymacją parametrów przełącznikowych modeli Markowa. W oparciu o modele przełącznikowe można prognozować zmiany kursu walutowego. Praca ma charakter teoretyczny. Badania empiryczne zostaną przeprowadzone w późniejszym terminie.

The article discusses the issue of behavior of juvenile offenders (juvenile offenders’ behavior) during their stay in resocialization institutions. The main subjects discussed in the article are: the meaning of personality disorders, addiction to psychoactive substances, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. All analyses are based on the examples of the research on juvenile delinquents and their families. The article also includes references to the social and legal situation of the juvenile delinquents and their families. It indicates possibilities for undertaking effective resocialization (rehabilitation) efforst towards juvenile delinquents.

The authors employ statistical analysis to determine if Poland’s regional and local job markets are subject to convergence or divergence in macroeconomic terms. The article analyzes selected labor market variables such as productivity at the regional level, real wages and the unemployment rate. The analyses are based on data from the website www.stat.gov.pl for the 2002-2009 period and for the 2002-2007 period in the case of labor productivity. The authors examine the main theoretical aspects of the processes of real convergence and divergence. They present statistical analyses of unconditional s - and b-convergence at the regional and local levels using panel data. The article ends with a summary and a set of conclusions. The research carried out by the authors reveals that none of the analyzed labor market variables, at either the local or regional levels, was subject to s-convergence throughout the analyzed period, but in specific sub-periods both convergence and divergence processes were observed. The convergence equations estimated by the authors show that only the unemployment rate was subject to b-convergence in both regional and local terms. In the analysis at the regional level, a divergence of real wages was observed in 15 provinces, with Mazovia province being the only exception nationwide. In turn, the research did not confirm that there is a divergence of wages at the county level, the authors note. In the analyzed period, labor productivity at the regional level was not subject to either b-convergence or divergence.

Opis:
Market transition in Central and Eastern Europe triggered many new socioeconomic developments. One of them was the appearance of open unemployment vastly different from that noted in most developed economies around the world. As a result, the term “transformation unemployment” began to be used in literature on the subject. The authors of the article analyze the trend from a theoretical point of view and then follow up with an empirical study of unemployment. They present changes in the labor force and GDP in several groups of countries: Central Europe (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary) plus Slovenia; Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia; Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova; Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan; and Balkan countries (former Yugoslav states except Slovenia as well as Albania, Bulgaria and Romania). The authors offer a statistical analysis of GDP growth and unemployment in individual groups of countries. In the final part of the article, the most important conclusions are summed up. These include the fact that the analyzed groups of countries display major differences in unemployment rates, along with changes in employment figures and labor productivity. Moreover, in most these countries, GDP growth has had a limited effect on unemployment. The only exception is Central Europe, though the European members of the Commonwealth of Independent States and transition economies in the Balkans also stand out positively.

The paper offers a statistical analysis of the determinants of wage differences in Poland in 2002-2006. These analyses are made with the use of a theoretical model that combines the Solow-Summers efficiency wage model (a neo-Keynesian economic model) and neoclassical growth models. This combined model shows that wage differences are determined by macroeconomic variables such as labor productivity and the unemployment rate. The authors use statistical data collected by the Central Statistical Office (GUS) on wages, labor productivity and unemployment in individual counties in Poland in 2002-2006. The analysis shows that the highest wages are reported in large urban centers and “counties that are centers of local economic development,” the authors say. On the other hand, the lowest wages are in typically agricultural counties and those that were home to many former state-run farms. In counties with a high rate of unemployment, relative wages in 2002-2006 were usually lower than in counties with low unemployment rates, while a high level of relative labor productivity was usually accompanied by a high level of relative wages. Regression equation estimates for each of the country’s 16 provinces show that relative wages had a different impact on unemployment rates and relative labor productivity in individual provinces.

Opis:
External ageing of Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) still engenders considerable problems. To improve precision of age determination on the basis of plumage characteristics a scheme of post-juvenile moult was investigated in approximately 1200 first-year Common Snipes caught during autumn migration in central Poland. Post-juvenile moult was commenced from body feathers followed by moult of rectrices, lesser/median wing coverts and tertials. Moult sequence showed high inter-individual variability and was started in rectrices (36.9%), wing coverts (25.3%), tertials (8.4%) or simultaneously in several of these tracts of feathers (29.4%). Moult of rectrices was finished before completion of moult of wing coverts and tertials. Moult of tertials finished as the last from all age-indicative tracts of feathers. Consequently, tertials were suggested as the most useful for ageing of first-year Common Snipes in an advanced stage of moult. There was no case of moult of the outermost tertial in first-year birds. The second tertial from distal side of wing was moulted as the last one within this tract of feathers and thereby should be of special interest during plumage examination.
