Opis:
Wettability of solids is a key phenomenon in many processes. One should mentioned those which accompany us in our everyday life i.e. washing or cementing as well as those applied in industry e.g. flotation of minerals. Value of the contact angles are affected by many factors. One of them is temperature. In this paper monocrystaline quartz was used in the investigations which were carried out in the range 5−50°C with the step every 5°C. As follows the value of the contact angle of both water and diiodomethane changes with the increasing temperature. The change of its value for water is much larger than in case of another liquids of apolar character. Using Chibowski approach the apparent surface free energy was calculated in two ways with and without correction about temperature change of the surface tension. The calculation show difference between both results. Taking into consideration another value of the surface tension should not be neglected even if measurements is taken at a temperature close to 20°C which is the standard in one in such measurements.

Opis:
The static magnetic field MF (0.44 T) effects on the adsorption of three surfactants: cationic bromide (DTAB) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and anionic sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) from their 10-3 M solutions were studied on bare and low-temperature air plasma treated glass plates. The surface properties of the adsorbed surfactants layers were determined via the water advancing and receding contact angles measurements and then calculation of the apparent surface free energy. An optical profilometer was used to determine the structure and topography of the adsorbed layers. The DTAB and SDS concentrations were below their critical micelle concentration and that of CTAB very close to its cmc. The results showed that in the case of DTAB solution (much below its cmc) a small decrease in the contact angle appeared while in CTAB (close to its cmc) an increase in the contact angle value was observed if adsorbed in the MF presence. Quite good reproducibility of the contact angle values was obtained. This was not the case for the SDS solution where the contact angle values were scattered. The reason was that the anionic surfactant did not adsorb homogeneously on the negatively charged glass surface. The contact angles and the calculated values of the work of water spreading clearly show that MF influences the structure of the surfactant adsorbed layer which was also supported by the optical profilometry images.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to determine how the drop size affects the contact angle values and determine its optimal size for further contact angle measurements and comparison of the contact angle values measured for three probe liquids (water, formamide, diiodomethane) on the glass surface using the: sessile drop and tilting plate methods. Next, using the measured contact angles, the total surface free energy and its components were determined from the van Oss et al. (Lifshitz-van der Waals acid- base component, LWAB), Owens-Wendt, Neumann and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) approaches. The studies showed, that drop size is very important for contact angle measurements and consequently, for surface free energy estimation.

Opis:
The paper discusses preparation and characteristics of silica hydrophobic layers deposited on the plasma-modified glass supports. The surfaces were investigated using wettability measurements, profilometry, photoacoustic and infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. The wettability measurements showed that the obtained surfaces are hydrophobic – the water contact angle was in the range of 140-150 degrees. The photoacoustic and infrared spectroscopy as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy disclosed the surface compositions, particularly that of the hydrophobic alkyl groups deposited on them. They were methyl groups introduced during hydrophobization by hexamethyldisilazane. In addition, it was found that the number of groups on the surface depends on the kind of plasma by which the supports were activated. The optical profilometer showed differences in the surface roughness which affects their hydrophobicity. Moreover, the surface free energies were determined using the contact angle hysteresis method. They disclosed differences in each surface, depending on the way of supports activation. The largest hydrophobicity was obtained on the layer deposited on the support activated by the argon plasma. However, support activation by the air plasma resulted in a decrease of hydrophobicity compared to that of the non-activated surface.

Opis:
This study aimed at synthesis, preparation, and physicochemical properties investigation of undoped polysiloxane-based coatings deposited on the glass supports. The other goal was to test the effectiveness of their hydrophobization with hexamethyldisilazane at an elevated temperature using a bubbler. The coatings were obtained in a sol-gel process by acid-assisted hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane and they were applied to the glass supports using the dip coating technique with various withdrawal speeds. The synthesized composition was scanned using TurbiscanLAB and its particle size was determined by means of the dynamic light scattering technique. The obtained surfaces were examined based on the water wettability measurements, photoacoustic spectroscopy, and transmittance measurements. It was found that the stability of the sol did not change during the dip-coating. Smooth, homogeneous, uniform, hydrophobic, and transparent coatings on the glass supports were obtained. Their wettability was determined by the contact angle in the range from 83.5 to 95.2 degrees and very low contact angle hysteresis. The hydrophobic effect obtained by modification with hexamethyldisilazane appears to be permanent – the contact angles do not change significantly after 7 days. The synthesized sol composition appears to be a good starting point for its chemical and physical modification for hydrophobicity increase and surface properties modification. Moreover, the hydrophobization of the coatings with hexamethyldisilazane at an elevated temperature using the bubbler did not have the desired effect.

Opis:
The paper presents the studies of metal wettability using two methods: the sessile droplet and immersion ones. Based on the measured contact angles, there was calculated apparent surface free energy from the acidic–basic approach and the contact angle hysteresis. The advancing contact angles measured using the immersion method exhibit a little higher values than those measured by the sessile droplet method. The application of the immersion method leads to obtaining higher contact angle hysteresis. Both methods give different values of contact angles but they can be applied independently for estimation of metal surface wettability.

Opis:
The effects of air, oxygen and argon plasma treatment on wetting and energetic properties of polymers: polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyoxymethylene (POM), polyamide (PA6G), polycarbonate (PC) and polypropylene (PP) were studied. The changes in surface properties of PMMA, PEEK, POM, PA6G polymers after the air plasma treatment, and PP and PC polymers after the Ar or O2 plasma treatment were determined via the measurement of advancing and receding contact angles of three liquids having different polarity, i.e. water, formamide and diiodomethane. Having the determined contact angles the surface free energy and its components of the polymers were calculated using three different theoretical approaches, namely: acid-base Lifsthitz-van der Waals (LWAB), contact angle hysteresis (CAH) and Owens and Wendt (O-W). The effects of plasma treatment were further determined by calculations of the adhesion work and work of spreading of water on modified polymer and compared to values calculated for the unmodified surfaces. Then for the PEEK and POM modified with the air plasma, their surface wettability was determined after 14 days from the exposure to the plasma. It was found that plasma treatment caused better wettability what reflected in a decreased contact angles measured on the modified polymer surfaces. The greatest changes appeared for polar liquids, i.e. water and formamide. It pointed to an increased the surface hydrophilicity after the plasma treatment. The changes correlated also with the increased polar interactions due to appearance polar groups on the surface. For the studied polymer surfaces, generally the dispersive interactions practically did not change, regardless the treatment time and plasma type. The total surface free energy values calculated for the polymers from three different approaches to interfacial interactions are similar. However, the energy values are apparent because they depend s upon the kind of liquid used for the contact angles measurement. Irrespectively of the plasma type, for all polymers an increase of the adhesion work of water in reference to the unmodified surfaces was observed. The most appropriate time to improve the adhesion between the polymer surface and liquid was found to be 25 or 60 s. However, the effects of plasma treatment are not permanent. With the storage time the contact angles have increased. This can be due to the structure reorganization within a few nm thick the surface layer.

Opis:
The surface morphology, structure and hydrophobicity of low-and high-molecular weight poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) fluids physically adsorbed onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at different weight percentages (5, 10, 20 and 40 wt.%), were studied employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectanceFouriertransforminfrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and measurements of contact angle with water. It was found that MWCNTs agglomerate forming voids between tubes of a broad range, while adsorption of the polymer from a hexane solution results in the expected wrapping of nanotubes withPDMS chains and, further, in filling voids, as represented by SEM data. ATR-FTIR was used to investigate the possible structural changes in the polymer nanocomposites. Based on the contact anglemeasurementsvia water drop shape analysis,MWCNTs/PDMS nanocomposites were characterizedas astable, superhydrophobic materials with the maximum contact angle (CA) equal to 152°at CPDMS=40wt.%.
