The situation in the job market and specific expectations of job applicants lie at the heart of a peculiar “career” that has recently been experienced in refusal letters. Additional elements influencing their form and content are German law regulations. Aperitif-Briefe, Eisschreiben, and refusal letters proper are the three main variants of this text genre which has undergone noticeable evolution in the investigated period of 2001–2012. The aim of this article is to indicate the development stages of this text genre, paying special attention to the aids offered to refusal letter authors by developing technology, especially by media.

Die Tierwelt ist einer der dem Menschen am nächsten stehenden Bereiche, in dem der Mensch nach Inspiration sucht, auch wenn es um sprachliche Ausdrücke geht. Gewählte Tiere sind zu Symbolen von bestimmten Eigenschaften oder Verhaltensweisen geworden, die oft und gerne auf Menschen übertragen werden. Einer der Bereiche, in dem dies besonders sichtbar ist, sind Schimpfwörter tierischer Provenienz. Im Beitrag wird ein Versuch unternommen, einen Katalog der tierischen Merkmale zu erstellen, die den Menschen zugeschrieben werden und zugleich eine Quelle für die Entstehung der Personenschimpfwörter im Deutschen sind.
Świat zwierzęcy to jeden z najbliższych człowiekowi źródeł inspiracji, również w zakresie jednostek językowych. Wybrane zwierzęta stały się bowiem symbolem określonych cech i zachowań, które są bardzo często i chętnie przenoszone na człowieka. Jednym z obszarów, w którym jest to bardzo widoczne, jest grupa wyzwisk osobowych utworzonych od nazw zwierząt. W artykule podjęto próbę stworzenia katalogu cech zwierzęcych w języku niemieckim, które są przypisywane ludziom i tym samym stanowią źródło powstawania wyzwisk osobowych.
The animal world is one of the human immediate sources of inspiration when it comes to creating language units. Selected animals have become identified with particular traits and types of behavior which are subsequently applied to human beings. One of the areas in which this is especially visible is a group of personal insults created on the basis of animal names. This article attempts to create a list of German animal traits which are attributed to people and consequently constitute a source of personal insults.

Im Beitrag wird der Versuch unternommen, im Lichte der polnisch- und deutschsprachigen Lexikographie die Frage zu beantworten, wie hoch der Beitrag der lexikographischen Praxis zur Verfestigung und Verbreitung der Stereotype ist. Dies wird am Beispiel der Lemmatisierung der ethnonymischen Bezeichnungen und ethnischen Schimpfwörter gezeigt.
In the article I have attempted to check, how is the influence of monolingual lexicography on ethnical stereotypes. The goal is to answer the question of how lexicography might contribute to strengthening ethnical stereotypes. I show it on examples of Ethnonyms and ethnic abuses.
W artykule została podjęta próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak silny jest wkład leksykografii w proces utrwalania i przekazywania stereotypów. Materiał badawczy stanowią niemiecko- i polskojęzyczne słowniki monolingwalne. Analiza dotyczy lematyzacji określeń etninimicznych oraz wyzwisk etnicznych.

„Space speaks“ – Research Basics within Linguistic Landscape on Selected German and Polish Examples The linguistic landscape in which we live is shaped by various kinds of texts. Such determined frames of a given space have an invariable influence on the kind and type of communication, and the space itself influences the functions of texts that are in it. The aim of the article is to indicate the assumptions and research possibilities within the Linguistic Landscape. They will be discussed on German and Polish examples of real space co-formed by texts in both cultures.
In dem Beitrag wird auf die Grundlagen der sich seit einiger Zeit etablierten linguistischen Disziplin – Raumlinguistik eingegangen. Es werden mögliche Vorgehensweisen bei der sprachlichen Raumbetrachtung und Betextung des Raumes diskutiert. Die theoretischen Erwägungen werden mit einigen Beispielen aus dem deutschen und polnischen Sprachraum illustriert.

Politeness is a phenomenon that has recently been linguistically studied. These are linguistic forms and formulas that can be used in certain communication situations. The so-called pragmatic component plays an important role here. This is particularly evident in the case of interspecific confrontation. This can be helped by bilingual lexicographical works, which can be of great help to all a foreign language learner. The end of taboo? – Linguistic and functional view on the Arsch / dupa lexeme in German and Polish phraseology The analysis center includes idiomatic expressions in German and Polish with the Arsch / dupa component. The aim of the analysis is to indicate the catalog of functions that are expressed with this type of idioms and to answer the question whether the analyzed component of idiomatic expressions still exhibits features of vulgarism and is covered with language taboo. Due to the richness of the material and the multiplicity of functions of the lexeme in question which can be pointed out, one can formulate a thesis about a progressive process of taboo removal.

Odmowa to akt mowy, należący do tzw. krytycznych aktów mowy. Jego realizacja powoduje zagrożenie dla równowagi interakcyjnej między nadawcą i odbiorcą. Z tego też powodu użytkownicy języka stosują różne werbalne i niewerbalne strategie związane z realizacją ODMAWIANIA. Szczególnym przypadkiem realizacji tego aktu mowy są listy odmowne na podania o pracę, w których powinna – pośrednio lub bezpośrednio – zostać wyrażona odmowa. Nadawcy wskazanego gatunku tekstu formułują ją w różny sposób. Przedmiotem artykułu są formy realizacji aktu mowy ODMAWIANIE w języku niemieckim na podstawie wskazanego gatunku tekstu. Celem jest skierowanie uwagi na strategie stosowane w realizacji tego aktu mowy oraz próba stworzenia typologii form używanych w językowej realizacji ODMAWIANIA.
A REFUSAL is an act of speech that belongs to the so-called critical speech acts. Its implementation poses a threat to the interaction balance between the sender and the recipient. For this reason, language uses resort to a variety of verbal and non-verbal strategies related to REFUSAL. A special case of the implementation of this speech act are letters of rejection for job applications, in which the refusal should – directly or indirectly – be expressed. Senders of this genre of texts formulate the refusal in different ways. This article examines the forms in which the speech act REFUSAL is implemented in German, drawing from the aforementioned genre. The aim is to identify strategies used in the realization of this speech act and to create a typology of forms used in the linguistic uses of REFUSAL.

Das ABSAGEN gehört zweifelsohne zu den konfliktiven Sprechakten, da es das Gesicht des Empfängers bedroht und gegen seine Erwartungen gerichtet ist. Aus diesem Grund werden die Sprechakte, die auf die Erteilung der Absage ausgerichtet sind, von weiteren Sprechakten begleitet, die den Empfänger auf den Erhalt einer Absage vorbereiten und die Auswirkungen der Absage abmildern sollen. Ziel des Beitrags ist die Analyse von Handlungsmustern des ABSAGENS in den deutschen Absageschreiben für Bewerbungen. Auf der Grundlage der Analyse wird der Versuch unternommen, eine Typologie der sprachlichen Handlungsmuster zu erstellen, die bei der Durchführung dieses Aktes auftreten. Es handelt sich dabei um verschiedene Kombinationen von anderen Sprechakten (DANKEN, SICH ENTSCHULDIGEN, BEDAUERN, BITTEN, AUFFORDERN, BESTÄTIGEN, EMPFEHLEN, BEGRÜNDEN u. a.), die vor dem Erteilen der Absage, direkt danach oder sowohl vor als auch nach diesem Sprechakt realisiert werden. Die Grundlage für die Analyse bilden authentische Absageschreiben aus dem Zeitraum 2012–2018. Anhand des gesammelten empirischen Materials wird auch die Vorkommenshäufigkeit bestimmter den Sprechakt ABSAGEN begleitenden Sprechakte untersucht und auf dieser Grundlage ihre Funktion diagnostiziert. Zum Schluss wird versucht, eine Hierarchie der mit dem Sprechakt ABSAGEN vorkommenden Sprechhandlungen zu erstellen und das mit dem Ziel, einen Beitrag zur Erstellung der Absageschreiben zu leisten.
REFUSAL is undoubtedly a conflictual speech act, as it threatens the recipient’s face and is directed against their expectations. For this reason, speech acts aimed at issuing a refusal are accompanied by other speech acts that are intended to prepare the recipient for receiving a refusal and to mitigate the effects of the refusal. The aim of the article is to analyze the patterns of action of refusing in German refusal letters for job applications. On the basis of the analysis, an attempt is made to create a typology of the linguistic action patterns that occur when this act is performed. This involves various combinations of other speech acts (THANKING, EXCUSE, CONDEMN, REQUEST, CONFIRMATION, SUGGESTION, REASONING, etc.), which are realized before the refusal is issued, directly afterward or both before and after this speech act. Authentic refusal letters from the period 2001–2012 form the basis for the analysis. Using the collected empirical material, the frequency of occurrence of certain speech acts accompanying the REFUSAL speech act is also examined and their function is diagnosed on this basis. Finally, an attempt is made to create a hierarchy of speech acts occurring with the REFUSAL speech act with the aim of contributing to the creation of the rejection letters.

Weihnachten gehört heutzutage zu den Festen, die in vielen Ländern der Welt gefeiert werden. Mit dem Fest sind verschiedene Rituale, sprachliche Praktiken und Textsorten sowie andere Formate verbunden. Sitten und Bräuche rund um Weihnachten werden von Generation zu Generation gerne übertragen und gepflegt. Die Möglichkeiten der digitalen Welt haben die Vielfalt im Bereich der Weihnachtsformate wesentlich bereichert. Im Sammelband „Weihnachtslinguistik“, hrsg. von Konstanze Marx sind Studien versammelt, die sich auf das breit verstandene Weihnachten beziehen. Die Studien werden nach dem Ablauf der weihnachtlichen Rituale in sechs thematische Kapitel unterteilt. Thmeatisiert und analysiert werden u. a. Weihnachtswünsche, -lieder, -briefe, -geschichten, -witze, Abreisskalender sowie Lexik rund um Weihnachten, darunter auch Interjektionen. Die Autoren präsentieren dabei unterschiedliche linguisische Zugänge zu der im Fokus des Bandes stehenden Thematik sowie diverse Herangehensweisen und Fragestellungen. Viele Analysen haben einen modellhaften methodischen Charakter. Daher können der Band und die versammelten Studien als Muster für andere Publikationen und Analysen gelten.
Nowadays, Christmas is one of the festivals celebrated in many countries around the world. Various rituals, linguistic practices and text types as well as other formats are associated with it. The customs and traditions surrounding Christmas are passed on and cherished from generation to generation. The possibilities of the digital world have significantly enriched the diversity of Christmas formats. The anthology “Christmas Linguistics”, edited by Konstanze Marx, brings together studies related to broadly understood Christmas. The studies are divided into six thematic chapters according to the sequence of Christmas rituals. Christmas wishes, songs, letters, stories, jokes, tear-off calendars and Christmas-related lexis, including interjections, are thematized and analysed. The authors present different linguistic approaches to the topic at the center of the volume, as well as various approaches and questions. Many of the analyses have a methodological model character. The volume and the collected studies can therefore serve as a model for other publications and analyses.

In the language of the respective country or language community, many mathematical components can be found, which are often used in the form of stable expressions. They are used in various areas of everyday life, often with different meanings than those primarily attributed to such units. But what is the relationship between language and mathematics? This question is at the forefront of the volume „Mathematics in European Languages. Linguistic Approaches and Interdisciplinary Perspectives“ by Magdalena Lisiecka-Czop and Katarzyna Sztandarska, who has already been published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Verlag. The volume brings together studies in which mathematical terminology and its linguistic relationships are discussed from various perspectives. These are phraseological, lexicographic, lexicological, semantic, pragmatic, semiotic, cognitive, translational and didactically oriented analyses, often contrastive. The volume opens up new interesting research perspectives and raises many questions that will hopefully be answered in further scientific studies inspired by the volume.
In der Sprache des jeweiligen Landes oder der jeweiligen Sprachgemeinschaft lassen sich viele mathematische Komponenten finden, die oft in Form von stabilen Ausdrücken gebraucht werden. Sie werden in diversen Bereichen des Alltags benutzt, oft mit anderen Bedeutungen als jene, die solchen Einheiten primär zugeschrieben werden. Wie ist aber das Verhältnis zwischen Sprache und Mathematik? Diese Frage steht im Vordergrund des Bandes „Mathematik in Sprachen Europas. Linguistische Zugänge und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven“ von Magdalena Lisiecka-Czop und Katarzyna Sztandarska, der bereits im Verlag Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Verlage erschienen ist. Im Band sind Studien versammelt, in denen die mathematische Fachsprache und deren linguistische Zusammenhänge aus diversen Perspektiven erörtert werden. Es handelt sich dabei um phraseologisch, lexikographisch, lexikologisch, semantisch, pragmatisch, semiotisch, kognitiv, translatorisch und didaktisch orientierte Analysen, oft kontrastiv angelegt. Der Band eröffnet neue interessante Forschungsperspektiven und wirft viele Fragen auf, die hoffentlich in den weiteren durch den Band inspirierten, wissenschaftlichen Studien beantwortet werden.

In the article, the phenomenon of semantically double compound in German is addressed. They are the focus of Georg Schuppener‘s monograph, published in 2019. The work is the first systematic description of this phenomenon and, in theory, offers a compact compendium on the phenomenon it deals with. The theoretical considerations are supported by numerous examples.
