Opis:
The paper presents the continuation of the author’s research on evolutionary approach to ship trajectory planning. While the general problem of the evolutionary trajectory planning has already been solved, no one has yet touched one of its specific aspects: evolutionary trajectory planning within Traffic Separation Schemes. Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) is a traffic-management route-system complying with rules of the International Maritime Organization. In brief, the ships navigating within a TSS all sail in the direction assigned to a particular traffic lane or they cross at a course angle as close to 90 degrees as possible. This and other TSS rules largely affect the evolutionary method. The paper presents a proposal of the extended evolutionary method, with a focus on changes that have to be made to obey TSS rules, especially the changes in the phases of evaluation and specialised operators of the evolutionary cycle.

Opis:
In the previous paper the author presented the evolutionary ship trajectory planning method designed to support Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS). This time the extensions of this method are described which allow to combine evolutionary trajectory planning with speed reduction manoeuvres. On TSS regions with higher than usual density of traffic and smaller distances between ships, the course alterations alone are not always sufficient or effective means of collision avoidance. Therefore they must be supplemented by speed reduction manoeuvres to a larger extent than on open waters. The paper includes a brief description of the optimisation problem, descriptions of the new elements of the method (fitness function, algorithms and the evolutionary cycle) and the examples of how the extended method successfully solves the problems unsolvable without applying speed reduction.

Opis:
The paper presents an extended version of the author’s Evolutionary Sets of Safe Ship Trajectories method. The method plans safe tracks of all ships involved in an encounter including speed reduction maneuvers, if necessary, and taking into account Rule 10 of COLREGS, which specifies ships’ behavior within Traffic Separation Schemes governed by IMO. The paper focuses on the evaluation phase of the evolutionary process and shows how fitness function is designed to compare various possible tracks as well as to assess the quality of a final solution. The impact of the fitness function on the method’s results is illustrated by examples.

The paper introduces a new numerical deterministic method of finding the necessary course alteration manoeuvre in a multi-target encounter situation for a given ship domain model. Its simplicity, flexibility and low computational complexity make this algorithm a useful component for real-time systems, where processing time is of importance. The algorithm is presented explicitly, so that it could be directly applied in any on-board collision avoidance system or VTS system. Example results of its use are also provided.

The article introduces a new algorithm for finding optimal routes on raster planes. This method takes advantage of the new data structure and results in minimizing the number of direction changes within a route. It has linear time and space complexities and is sufficiently fast to perform real-time routing on the raster grids. Both the algorithm and its data structure are presented in detail in the paper. Possible applications of this method are also discussed.

Opis:
The paper presents selected aspects of evolutionary sets of safe ship trajectories-a method which applies evolutionary algorithms and some of the assumptions of game theory to solving ship encounter situations. For given positions and motion parameters of the ships, the method finds a near optimal set of safe trajectories of all ships involved in an encounter. The method works in real time and the solutions must be returned within one minute, which enforces speeding up the optimisation process. During the development of the method the authors tested various problem-dedicated crossover operators to obtain the best performance. The results of that research are given here. The paper includes a detailed description of these operators as well as statistical simulation results and examples of experiment results.

Opis:
The paper presents a multi-objective deterministic method of weather routing for sailing vessels. Depending on a particular purpose of sailboat weather routing, the presented method makes it possible to customize the criteria and constraints so as to fit a particular user’s needs. Apart from a typical shortest time criterion, safety and comfort can also be taken into account. Additionally, the method supports dynamic weather data: in its present version short-term, mid-term and long-term term weather forecasts are used during optimization process. In the paper the multi-objective optimization problem is first defined and analysed. Following this, the proposed method solving this problem is described in detail. The method has been implemented as an online SailAssistance application. Some representative examples solutions are presented, emphasizing the effects of applying different criteria or different values of customized parameters.

The paper presents a newly designed improvement to the method of solving multi-ship encounter situations. In general, the method combines some of the assumptions of game theory with evolutionary programming and aims to find optimal set of cooperating trajectories of all ships involved in an encounter situation. The improvement presented here is a new way of modelling some of the COLREGS rules. Due to this change, the method is now able to find solutions, which are more compliant with COLREGS, more intuitive and consequently – safer from the navigator’s point of view.

Opis:
The paper investigates the impact of a precise ship domain shape on the size of collision avoidance manoeuvres. The considered collision avoidance manoeuvres include both course and speed alterations. Various ship domains are compared with their polygonal approximations, which vary in the number of points of a domain contour and placement of these points. The best of all considered approximations is determined in the course of simulation experiments performed for head-on, crossing and overtaking situations. The chosen number and placement of contour points combine precision of domain approximation with reasonable computational time.

Human error remains the most common cause of marine incidents and it is worth emphasizing that navigator’s performance is directly affected by ergonomic factors on the bridge. Studies regarding influence of bridge design and work environment on the operator are rare, thus the main purpose of this paper is to fill in this gap. Documents issued by recognized organizations, research publications and additional sources were reviewed to check if navigators obtain enough support in this area and what should be improved. It was found that present ergonomic guidelines for the bridge design require revision and there is a need for making the regulations more meaningful and direct. The main documents that require reworking include Guidelines on Ergonomics Criteria for Bridge Equipment and Layout, International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) as well as selected parts of SOLAS V/15 regulation.

This paper is a continuation of papers dedicated to a radar-based CTPA (Collision Threat Parameters Area) display designed to support safe manoeuvre selection. The display visualizes all the ships in an encounter and presents situational overview from the own ship's point of view. It calculates and displays information on unsafe or unrealistic own ship's course & speed allowing a user to select a safe manoeuvre. So far only the manual selection was possible, thus the paper aims at presenting a heuristic approach towards the manoeuvre selection when using the display.

Opis:
Safety analysis of navigation over a given area may cover application of various risk measures for ship collisions. One of them is percentage of the so called near- miss situations (potential collision situations). In this article a method of automatic detection of such situations based on the data from Automatic Identification System (AIS), is proposed. The method utilizes input parameters such as: collision risk measure based on ship’s domain concept, relative speed between ships as well as their course difference. For classification of ships encounters, there is used a neuro-fuzzy network which estimates a degree of collision hazard on the basis of a set of rules. The worked out method makes it possibile to apply an arbitrary ship’s domain as well as to learn the classifier on the basis of opinions of experts interpreting the data from the AIS.
