Opis:
The aim of this research was to recognize the importance of cross-border movement for the development of communes located along the eastern border. The research was carried out in two communes: Terespol and Piszczac. The analysis showed that the communes are rural and they are characterized by a low degree of entrepreneurship. High unemployment contributes to the migration of people to urban centres or abroad. Border traffic is an important element of economic life in such regions. Entrepreneurs and traders use a passive trade policy in relation to consumers across the eastern border. Such policy raises concerns about the further cooperation. Socio-economic development of the communes requires institutional support for small businesses and improvement of professional skills of the unemployed. What is more, taking advantage of natural values to develop tourism and recreation offer and increasing trade and cooperation with companies from the East are equally significant.

Role of E. granulosus-specific IgG antibody avidity in evaluation of a natural history of the parasite cysts in the liver, duration of infection and immunogenic cysts activity was studied. Thirty-one patients with liver cysts suspected of echinococcosis were examined; E. Granulosus infection was finally confirmed by a fine needle aspiration biopsy or surgery in 29 cases (93.5%) and two non-parasitic simple cysts in the liver were diagnosed. E. granulosus-specific IgG antibody was found in 21 patients (67.7%). High IgG avidity values were observed in 14 patients with liver cysts in a degcneration stage confirmed by imaging techniques. Low IgG avidity values were mostly detected in children with hypoechogenic echinococcal cysts being in a recent stage of infection. Determination of anti-E. Granulosus immunoglobulin G antibody avidity is a very usefull diagnostic tool for a determination of parasitic cysts activity and their developmental age.

Recent epidemiological reports have shown an increasing incidence of Echinococcus multilocularis infection among red foxes and inhabitants from Pomorskie, Warmińsko−Mazurskie and Podkarpackie Districts of Poland. The study describes the actual recommendations for a proper diagnosis and optimal treatment in patients infected with E. multilocularis in order to standardize diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for this severe parasitic disease by reference centres. Liver lesions caused by the parasite were visualised by ultrasonography and computerized tomography scan. The clinical diagnosis based on typical imaging findings was completed by Em2plus ELISA and Em16 and Em18 Western blot immunodiagnostic tests using specific antigens, and confirmed by positive histopathological and/or molecular examinations. Since 1992, forty−five cases of alveolar echinococcosis were registered in Poland. Professions related to forestry or picking−up mushrooms and blueberries were potential risk factors for an occurrence of the infection, especially in the northern region of the country. In the imaging techniques, the liver lesions were characterized by heterogenous, irregular masses with necrotic cavities, and clausters of calcifications located in the peripheral parts. The final diagnosis of alveococcosis was based on PAS−positive staining of lesions in histopathology and/or the detection of the parasite's DNA in liver sections by PCR. The patients were treated by radical surgery with concomitant long−term intensive chemotherapy with albendazole. Conclusions: Collaboration with physicians of various medical specialities is crucial for an early and more effective detection of alveococcosis in Poland. E. multilocularis infection should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of space−occupying lesions in the liver characterized by irregular heterogenous masses, suggesting slow tumor growth.

The influence of Nalcrom (sodium cromoglycate) on the cource of the intestinal phase of trichinellosis in mice was investigated. The animals infected with 200 Trichinella spiralis larvae were treated with Nalcrom between 7-20 or 3-20 days after infection (d.a.i.). The drug was administered in two doses: 0,6 or 1, 7 mg/mouse/day. In the all groups of animals received Nalcrom higher number of mast cells and eosinophilis than in the control groups was observed. These results are the opposite of those obtained with Nalcrom in ulcerative colitis in man.

Introduction. The most important confirmative diagnostic test for trichinellosis is the presence of the muscle larvae in a tissue biopsy but this direct method has a low sensitivity of light and moderate infections. The aim of presented study was to compare the usefulness of the results obtained by three ELISA procedures for Trichinella spp. diagnosis in human outbreaks. Materials and methods. All sera (cases and controls) were tested for anti-Trichinella antibodies (immunoglobulin G) using commercially available Novatec KIT and two other ELISA procedures based on excretory-secretory (ES) antigens on Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae. The main differences in ELISA procedures were: the protein concentration in antigen, dilution of human serum samples, conjugate and the time of conjugate incubation. Additional differences were noticed in ES antigen preparation procedures as well as in T. spiralis isolates used in these procedures. Serum samples were obtained from 22 symptomatical patients from Poznań region (West Poland), geographic area where human outbreak had occurred. Control serum samples were obtained from 20 patients from an open population from a non endemic trichinellosis area. Results. The results were analyzed in terms of both: statistical and epidemiological point of view. Linear regression analysis and correlations coefficient r between OD values of total 22 patients obtained in three ELISA procedures were positive and high statistically significant. Three ELISA procedures revealed different cut-off values and positivity rates for outbreak. However, the majority of positive samples were found as positive in three procedures, but some of them were positive in two or one procedure only. These individual variability in sera reactivity observed in three ELISA procedures could be very important from epidemiological point of view.

Erthwork during rebuilding of the S3 route in Gorzów Wielkopolski exposed sediments of a palaeolake. The thickness of the sediment complex reaches 11 m. Two gyttja layers are separated by peats and fluvial sands and muds. The sequence reflects a multiphase development of the lake. Lacustrine sediments overlie Odranian (Saalian) (MOIS 6) glaciofluvial deposits and are covered by Vistulian glacial sediments (MOIS 2). At present, the stratigraphic position of the palaeolake is dated to the Eemian (MOIS 5e), with a probable continuation of the deposition into the early Vistulian (MOIS 5d-4). Rhinoceros bones (more than 100 pieces), including a skull with 24 well-preserved teeth, were discovered in the lower part of the palaeolake sediments. The preliminary expertise report, based mainly on the teeth analysis, allows assigning the rhinoceros remains into the genus Stephanorhinus. The finding of so many pieces of the skeleton of Stephanorhinus sp. in situ is unique on the scale of European scale. Apart from the rhinoceros remains, a single metacarpal bone of fallow deer (Dama dama) was found in the site. This is the first record of extant fallow deer in the Pleistocene of Poland. The palaeolake sediments were sampled and multidisciplinary research is planned to reconstruct the history of the development of this basin. The relationship between the rhinoceros andfallow deer remains with the palaeoenvironment will make it possible to ascertain the conditions in which those animals lived at higher latitudes during the Eemian Interglacial.

Opis:
Alveococcosis in humans is characterized by a tumor-like growth with a tendency to infiltration of neighbouring organs or metastases formation in the lungs and brain. The study aimed to improve on the clinical evaluation of patients with alveolar echinococcosis (AE) and to determine the risk of metacestode spreading to adjacent tissues or distant organs by a detection of adhesion molecules involved in the tumorigenesis process. Serum concentrations of sPECAM-1, sVCAM-1 and sE-selectin adhesion molecules were studied in 8 AE patients in comparison to 75 cases with malignant neoplasms, including cases with tumors of hepatic and extra-hepatic location. The adhesion molecules were found to be early predictive markers of the active, tissue infiltrated alveococcosis with the risk of parasite spreading through the circulation. High serum levels of soluble PECAM-1 molecule were strongly related to the advanced, progressive disease and the fatality of patients’ clinical prognosis.
