Opis:
Germination can be used to enhance nutritional value and health functions of edible seeds. Sprouts are considered healthier than non-germinated seeds because they are richer in the basic nutritional components (protein, amino acid, carbohydrates, and minerals) and also contain more bioactive components. The present study is the first to dynamically analyze the germination properties regarding morphological characteristics, nutrient compounds, bioactive components and antioxidant activities of Firmiana platanifolia (F. platanifolia) seeds. The results showed that the appearance, color and morphology of F. platanifolia seeds and sprouts at different germination times showed considerable differences. With the increasing germination time, the moisture content, sucrose, fructose, total flavonoid content and DPPH significantly increased, and reached the peak at 8 d of germination, almost 2.38, 5.76, 4.02, 7.97 and 8.91 times higher than those of at 0 d, respectively. The soluble protein, total phenolic, ABTS and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) increased first and then decreased as the germination time increased, and were overall higher than those of at the initial concentration. However, total starch content and mineral elements decreased as germination progressed. Additionally, the total flavonoid content showed a strongly positive correlation with DPPH (p<0.01), whereas the total phenolic and total flavonoid content showed a similar, significant and positive correlation with ABTS and ferrous ion chelating activity (FICA, p<0.05). Therefore, seed germination significantly increased phytochemical contents and antioxidant activity. The current research results will help to reveal the dynamic changes in nutrient content and antioxidant activity of F. platanifolia seeds during the germination process, and provide reference data for further studying the development and utilization of germinated seeds.

Experiments using in vitro embryo germination and culture have been designed to investigate the effects of cobalt levels of 0, 100, 200, 400 and 800 μM on some growth parameters and chemical changes in Jatropha curcas seedlings. The results showed that excess cobalt levels in MS media produced visual symptoms of toxicity in J. curcas seedlings after 7 d with increasing levels of cobalt ion. The fresh weights of cotyledons and radicles were significantly affected except for hypocotyls at the cobalt concentration of 100 μM. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) significantly increased in the radicles when compared to the control, but decreases in the activity of the hypocotyls were found at the tested cobalt levels. Increase of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) activity in the cotyledons and hypocotyls was observed at the tested cobalt levels, but a decrease of the activity in the radicles except for at cobalt concentration of 100 μM. Increase in the activity of catalase (CAT) of radicles with increasing cobalt concentrations, and a significant decrease in activity in the hypocotyls was also observed. Increase in phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity of cotyledons and radicles with increasing cobalt concentrations in the range 100-800 μM, but a decline in the activity of hypocotyls was also observed when hypocotyls at the cobalt concentrations of 400 and 800 μM. The present results indicated that SOD, GPX, CAT, and PAL may play an important role in the defensive mechanisms of Jatropha curcas seedlings exposed to excessive cobalt. These findings will help to provide useful bioassays to help in assessment of cobalt contamination in agricultural environments.

Opis:
Honeycomb structures with zero Poisson’s ratio show promising potential for application in variable-sweep wing aircraft. The shear properties of these honeycomb structures serve as a crucial indicator of their morphing capacity. This paper derives the linear and non-linear shear properties of a honeycomb structure with zero Poisson’s ratio. A modified factor is introduced to establish a relationship between the linear and non-linear shear modulus of the honeycomb structure, simplifying the calculation method of the non-linear shear modulus. The validity of theoretical predictions is then confirmed using the finite element method Furthermore, the influences of the geometric parameters on the shear properties of the honeycomb structure with zero Poisson’s ratio are investigated, highlighting the varying contributions of these cell geometric parameters to the shear properties.

Vietnam is one of the main centers of generic diversity for Juglandaceae worldwide. In this study, we present for the first time a province-wide distribution of all 3 subfamilies, 7 genera, and 11 Vietnamese species, and give an update on the habitats of all Vietnamese Juglandaceae species, their uses, and current threats. Juglandaceae are found throughout Vietnam. However, most species occur predominantly in the north- ern part of the country between 600 and 1200 m. Some taxa range is found extensively from sea level up to 2,500 meters above sea level. According to the IUCN Red List, Rhoiptelea chiliantha, Carya sinensis, and Pterocarya tonkinensis are threatened while Engelhardia spicata, E. serrata, Alfaropsis roxburghiana, Pterocarya stenoptera are classified as least concerned (Carya tonkinensis is threatened locally, and Engelhardia spicata var. colebrookiana and Platycarya strobilacea merit “threatened” designation in Vietnam’s Red Data Book. The most frequent threats are logging, land-use change, and habitat destruction due to artificial wood planta- tions or road construction. Until now, no conservation measures have been applied for any of the species in Vietnam, although some species occur in national parks. Our study gives an important update on the current diversity and distribution of Juglandaceae in Vietnam. We point out the need for a correct assessment of the threat status of various species on a national and international scale to protect the rarest and most endangered of them. Further research, the use of various forms of protection of individual taxa and/or their habitats, and drawing the attention of an international group of researchers to the urgent need to work together to protect biodiversity in Vietnam hot spots are necessary.

Opis:
Establishing a fatigue life prediction model considering the machined surface state is of great significance to improve fatigue life prediction accuracy. Fatigue tests with different machined surface states of GH4169 alloy were conducted firstly. The influence of surface state parameters on the fatigue life was analyzed. Then, the machined surface stress concentration factor and residual stress were introduced into the fatigue crack initiation and propagation models. Finally, the fatigue life prediction model of GH4169 material considering the surface states was established. The prediction results based on the proposed model are almost within a factor of two scatter band of the test results.

The influence of nano dispersion on the thermoelectric properties of Bi2Te3 was actively investigating to wide-spread thermoelectric applications. Herein this report, we have systematically controlled the microstructure of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (BST) alloys through the incorporation of carbon nanofiber (CNF), and studied their effect on thermoelectric properties, and mechanical properties. The BST/x-CNF (x-0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 wt.%) composites powder was fabricated using high energy ball milling, and subsequently consolidated the powder using spark plasma sintering. The identification of CNF in bulk composites was analyzed in Raman spectroscopy and corresponding CNF peaks were recognized. The BST matrix grain size was greatly reduced with CNF dispersion and consistently decreased along CNF percentage. The electrical conductivity was reduced and Seebeck coefficient varied in small-scale by embedding CNF. The thermal conductivity was progressively diminished, obtained lattice thermal conductivity was lowest compared to bare sample due to induced phonon scattering at interfaces of secondary phases as well as highly dense fine grain boundaries. The peak ZT of 0.95 achieved for 0.1 wt.% dispersed BST/CNF composites. The Vickers hardness value of 101.8 Hv was obtained for the BST/CNF composites.

The enzyme strictosidine synthase (STR, EC: 4.3.3.2) plays a key role in the biosynthetic pathway of terpenoid indole alkaloid (TIA). It catalyzes the condensation of the tryptamine and secologanin to form 3α(S)-strictosidine, which is the common precursor of all TIAs. In this paper, a STR gene designated as DoSTR (GenBank: KX068707) was first cloned and characterized from Dendrobium officinale with rapid amplified cDNA ends method (RACE). DoSTR has a length of 1380bp with 1179bp open reading frame encoding 392 amino acids. BlastP analyses showed that its amino acid sequence was classified into Str_synth superfamily. qRT-PCR showed that DoSTR was expressed in all tissues tested, with a significantly higher level in flower and the lowest in stem. Four different treatments with MeJA, SA, ABA and AgNO₃, respectively, could induce the DoSTR expression to a different extent. And the effect of MeJA was the most obvious and transcript level of DoSTR induced by MeJA was 20.7 times greater than that of control at 48 hours after treatment. Furthermore, it was found that DoSTR was localized in vacuole through transient expression in tobacco. The characterization and expression of DoSTR can help in further studying the role of DoSTR in the biosynthesis of TIAs in D. officinale. This study may throw light on the alkaloid biosynthesis pathway of D. officinale.

Zeolite can effectively regulate the nutrient status in the root zone of crops, thereby increasing nitrogen utilization. However, there has been relatively little research conducted concerning a possible reduction in the frequency of nitrogen application due to the sustained-release properties of zeolite. In this study, 157.5 kg ha-1 nitrogen in the form of urea fertilizer was applied at the same rate, either as a one-time application or as a 3-way split application with and without 10 t ha-1 zeolite. The effects on rice yield, nitrogen uptake, root morphology and soil properties were evaluated in 2014 and 2015. Results showed that zeolite could enhance the biomass, leaf area index and nitrogen uptake. A higher rice grain yield and nitrogen uptake following soil treatment with zeolite could be attributed to a higher soil cation exchange capacity as well as nitrogen and potassium availability in the soil especially during the vegetative period of the rice plant. The addition of nitrogen to the soil as a one-time application or 3-way split application with 10 t ha-1 zeolite significantly increased rice grain yield by 8.5 or 10.7% compared with nitrogen as a one-time application without zeolite. Zeolite addition greatly improved the development of root morphology and activity compared with treatments without zeolite, which contributed to additional plant growth. The addition of nitrogen to the soil with 10 t ha-1 zeolite as a one-time application that can significantly increase nutrient retention is recommended to improve rice grain yield and decrease nitrogen application frequencies in order to lower both labour forces and energy requirements.

Opis:
Real-time monitoring of deformation of large structure parts is of great significance and the deformation of such structure parts is often accompanied with the change of curvature. The curvature can be obtained by measuring changes of strain, surface curve and modal displacement of the structure. However, many factors are faced with difficulty in measurement and low sensitivity at a small deformation level. In order to measure curvature in an effective way, a novel fibre Bragg grating (FBG) curvature sensor is proposed, which aims at removing the deficiencies of traditional methods in low precision and narrow adjusting. The sensor combines two FBGs with a specific structure of stainless steel elastomer. The elastomer can transfer the strain of the structure part to the FBG and then the FBG measures the strain to obtain the curvature. The performed simulation and experiment show that the sensor can effectively amplify the strain to the FBG through the unique structure of the elastomer, and the accuracy of the sensor used in the experiment is increased by 14% compared with that of the FBG used for direct measurement.

In this work, a two-dimensional finite element model for the grain boundary flow rule is developed based on the thermo-mechanical gradient-enhanced plasticity theory. The proposed model is temperature-dependent. A special attention is given to physical and micromechanical nature of dislocation interactions in combination with thermal activation on stored and dissipated energy. Thermodynamic conjugate microforces are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. Correspondingly, two different grain boundary material length scales are present in the proposed model. Finally, numerical examples are solved in order to explore characteristics of the proposed grain boundary flow rule.

This model optimizes port hinterland intermodal refrigerated container flows , considering both cost and quality degradation, which is distinctive from the previous literature content in a way that it quantifies the influence of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in different setting temperature on intermodal network planning. The primary contribution of this paper is that the model is beneficial not only to shippers and customers for the novel service design, but also offer , for policy-makers of the government, insights to develop inland transport infrastructures in consideration of intermodal transportation. The majority of models of multimodal system have been established with an objective of cost minimization for normal commodities. As the food quality is possible to be influenced by varying duration time required for the storage and transportation, and transportation accompanied with refrigeration producing more CO2 emission, this paper aims to address cost minimization and quality degradation minimization within the constraint of CO2 footprint. To achieve this aim, we put the quality degradation model in a mixed-integer linear programming model used for intermodal network planning for cold chain. The example of Dalian Port and Yingkou Port offer insight into trade-offs between transportation temperature and transport mode considering CO2 footprint. Furthermore, the model can offer a useful reference for other regions with the demand for different imported food, which requires an uninterrupted cold chain during the transportation and storage.
