Opis:
“Miacid” carnivorans comprise one of the modern mammal groups appearing around the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) in the Northern Hemisphere. Here we describe a new very small “miacid” carnivoran from the earliest Eocene of Dormaal, Belgium, that shares a particular dental morphology with the species “Miacis” winkleri and “Miacis” rosei from the early Eocene of North America. The three species present very gracile and sharp teeth, and are hereby placed in the new genus Gracilocyon. Comparative dental analysis of Gracilocyon with other early “miacids” contributes to better resolve the polarity of dental characters and indicates that this genus is one of the most primitive members of the family. Diversity of early modern carnivorans is greater than previously considered and early “miacids” seem to have dispersed into North America from two different geographic origins.

Opis:
A nearly complete skull, a partial left scapula, five lumbar vertebrae, and some fragments of ribs of a medium−sized kentriodontid dolphin (Cetacea, Odontoceti) discovered in the middle Miocene of Setúbal Peninsula, Lower Tagus Basin, Portugal, are herein assigned to a new genus and species, Tagicetus joneti. Within the grade−level family Kentriodontidae, the new taxon is referred to the specifically and ecologically diversified subfamily Kentriodontinae, essentially defined by a well−developed posterolateral projection of the nasal. The elongated rostrum, the constriction of the asymmetric premaxillae at the base of the rostrum, the anteriorly elongated palatines, and the elevated vertex of T. joneti suggest closer affinities with the larger, more derived Macrokentriodon morani, from the middle Miocene of Maryland (USA). Among other features, T. joneti differs from the latter in having more numerous maxillary teeth and shorter zygomatic processes of the squamosals. Besides providing additional indications about the evolutionary trends within the Kentriodontinae, this occurrence constitutes the first record of the subfamily from the east coast of the North Atlantic based on a nearly complete skull. Considering their morphological diversity and wide geographic range, the Kentriodontinae may have constituted one of the dominant groups of Miocene oceanic dolphins.

The earliest Oligocene faunas of Europe are characterised by a large number of Asian immigrants. One of the classical sites that shows the faunal change after this so−called “Grande Coupure” is Hoogbutsel in Belgium (MP 21). Recently a new locality from the lowermost Oligocene was discovered in Belgium, Boutersem TGV. Here, we describe a new heterosoricid (Mammalia, Soricomorpha), Belgicasorex ramboeri gen. et sp. nov., from these lowermost Oligocene localities. We assume that, like the erinaceid Tetracus nanus Aymard, 1846 and the nyctitheriid Oligonyctia hoffmani Smith, 2004, Belgicasorex ramboeri was one of the Asian immigrants that entered Europe after the “Grande Coupure”.

Opis:
New dental and postcranial remains of the alleged louisinine hyopsodontid “condylarth” Microhyus from the European Paleocene/Eocene transition are described, and prompt a reevaluation of the genus. New specimens belonging to Microhyus musculus from Dormaal (MP7, Belgium) provide the first evidence of the lower dentition of the type species. We describe M. musculus? from Pourcy (MP7, France) and cf. Microhyussp. from Berru (MP6a, France). A rich original assemblage of M. reisi from Silveirinha (MP7, Portugal) allows a detailed description of the morphological dental variation within that species. Well−preserved astragali and calcanei from Silveirinha can be confidently attributed to Microhyus reisi. Functional analysis of these elements suggests that Microhyus was a terrestrial mammal capable of rapid running or jumping. The pedal morphology of Microhyus is very similar to that of Paschatherium. These louisinines share some derived characters with the hyopsodontids Apheliscus and Haplomylus (e.g., the occurrence of a cotylar fossa on the astragalus) but they differ from Hyopsodus. Therefore, in view of the pedal morphology alone, the hyopsodontids may be polyphyletic. Given the dental similarities between Microhyus and the early representatives of the order Macroscelidea, we compared the tarsal morphology of louisinines with that of modern macroscelidids (Paleogene tarsal remains are currently unknown for this group). Macroscelidids and louisinines present some similarities in their astragalar morphology; however, the macroscelidid astragalus appears to be too specialized to be compared with that of Microhyus and Paschatherium.

Opis:
In increasingly dynamic business environment, provision of strategically relevant information is crucial for the formulation and realisation of a firm’s strategy. This paper outlines a new method for supplying such information, called strategic management accounting. This study has drawn on the vast specialist literature of the subject, and particularly on the contributions by Porter and Simmonds. By presenting key concepts of strategic management accounting, the paper may be a useful source of reference for the theorists and practitioners wishing to use its potential for improving the flow of information in the process of evaluating business strategy.

Opis:
We investigated all reported percutaneous exposure incidents (PEI) among staff from a large Australian hospital in the 3-year period, 2001–2003. There were a total of 373 PEI, of which 38.9% were needlestick injuries, 32.7% were cutaneous exposures and 28.4% sharps-related injuries. Nurses were the most commonly affected staff members, accounting for 63.5% of the total, followed by doctors (18.8%) and other staff (17.7%). Needlestick injuries were responsible for the majority of nurses’ PEI (44.7%). Sharps injuries constituted the major category for doctors (44.3%). Most needlestick injuries (67.6%) were caused by hollow-bore needles, while the majority of cutaneous exposures involved blood or serum (55.8%). Most sharps injures were caused by unknown devices (35.9%) or suture needles (34.9%). Overall, our investigation suggests that PEI is a considerable burden for health care workers in Australia. Further research is now required to determine the relationships, if any, between workers who suffer PEI and those who do not.

Opis:
The present study was conducted to analyze the ratification status of International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions related to occupational safety and health (OSH) by ILO member states in terms of national indicators (length of ILO membership and national income status) and regional affiliation. 17 conventions designated as OSH-related by the 2003 International Labour Conference were examined. In general, countries with longer ILO membership ratified higher numbers of conventions related to OSH. With some variation, long-membership countries had the largest number of ratifications, followed by middle- and shortmembership countries in all regions. There were also incremental increases in the number of ratifications for OSH-related conventions according to the national income status. Common regional characteristics that could not be explained by the factors studied also existed. Future efforts to increase ratification at an international level will need to consider the factors influencing ratification practice among the member states.

Opis:
We investigated the epidemiology of musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) among a complete cross-section of 330 nurses from a large Korean hospital, by means of a questionnaire survey (response rate: 97.9%). The prevalence of MSS at any body site was 93.6%, with symptoms most commonly reported at the shoulder (74.5%), lower back (72.4%), neck (62.7%), lower legs (52.1%) and hand/wrist (46.7%). Logistic regression indicated that nurses who undertook manual handling of patients were 7.2 times as likely to report MSS (OR 7.2, 95%CI 1.2–42.3, P = .0275), while nurses suffering from periodic depression experienced a 3.3-fold MSS risk (OR 3.3, 95%CI 1.3–8.3, P = .0104). Overall, our study suggests that Korean nurses incur a very high MSS burden when compared internationally. A greater commitment is needed to improve physical conditions, occupational tasks and psychosocial work issues among nurses in this country.

Opis:
A well preserved specimen of the theropod Ceratosaurusfrom the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of western Colorado was recently described and given the name C. magnicornis. The systematics of the genus is outside the scope of the present study but, as a generally accepted basal tetanuran, the braincase was CT scanned to provide a description of the endocranium, inner ear, pneumatic, and venous sinus systems in a primitive member of this clade. Five major subregions of the theropod endocranium are distinguished for the purpose of simplifying cranial computed tomographic interpretation and to provide a systematic means of comparison to other endocrania. The skull morphology of Ceratosaurus influences the overall braincase morphology and the number and distribution of the major foramina. The low pontine angle and relatively unflexed braincase is considered a more primitive character. The orientation of the horizontal semicircular canal confirms a rather horizontal and unerect posture of the head and neck. As in birds, the narrower skull morphology of Ceratosaurusis associated with fewer cranial nerve foramina. Additionally, the maxillary dominated dentigerous upper jaw of Ceratosaurusis felt to share with the alligator a large rostrally directed maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve and a small ophthalmic branch. The upper bill of birds, being dominated by the premaxillary and lacking teeth, is innervated predominantly by the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. For this reason, avian−based cranial nerve reconstructions are felt to be inappropriate for basal theropods.Ceratosaurusskull pneumatization and possible evidence of olfactory conchal structures is on the other hand very avian in character. Based on computed tomography, Ceratosaurusis determined to have possessed a typical basal theropod endocranium and bipedal vestibular system similar to Allosaurus.
