This paper deals with the performance assessment of a textile industry, namely African Textile Manufactures (ATM) Ltd., in Chalawa, Kano industrial estate, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The entire system ATM has different sections of machines for processing various assignments. The machines in the sections have diverse capabilities. We assumed the following subsystems: spinning, weaving, pretreatment, printing, and steaming. The failure rates of subsystems are constant, and they follow exponential distribution, while the repairs follow two types of distributions, namely general distribution and Gumbel–Hougaard family copula distribution. The system analyzed by employing supplementary variable and the Laplace transform. Various measures of reliability have been computed for differential values of failures and two types of repair. The conclusions and some recommendations are addressed to improving the management of ATM.

Opis:
Skin disorders, a prevalent cause of illnesses, may be identified by studying their physical structure and history of the condition. Currently, skin diseases are diagnosed using invasive procedures such as clinical examination and histology. The examinations are quite effective and beneficial. This paper describes an evolutionary model for skin disease classification and detection based on machine learning and image processing. This model integrates image preprocessing, image augmentation, segmentation, and machine learning algorithms. The experimental investigation makes use of a dermatology data set. The model employs the machine learning methods: the support vector machine (SVM), the k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and random forest algorithms for image categorization and detection. This suggested methodology is beneficial for the accurate identification of skin disease using image analysis. The SVM algorithm achieved an accuracy of 98.8%. The KNN algorithm achieved a sensitivity of 91%. The specificity of KNN was 99%.

Opis:
Detection of the range of a target using laser range finders requires filtering of incoming data in real-time which can be achieved by a dedicated hardware to meet demanding time requirements. In this paper efficient filter structure which is the combination of constant false alarm rate (CFAR) and pipelined least mean square (LMS) adaptive filtering technique used to create solution for various adaptive filtering problems. Cell averaging (CA) CFAR and automatic censored cell averaging (ACCA) CFAR algorithm are fused separately with the adaptive filter in order to filter the incoming signal so that the detection of the of a target can be achieved through peak detection unit and accordingly range can be calculated. The design with CA-CFAR fused with PLMS filter is synthesized and implemented on a Xilinx Virtex4 FPGA with 32 MHz clock using Xilinx ISE software. Other design with ACCA-CFAR combined with PLMS filter is modeled and simulated in MATLAB simulink.

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate some physical properties of date palm fruits cv. Khadrawy and Medjool. Pulp moisture content, seed moisture content, fruit dimensions (Major and minor intercept), arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, sphericity, colour values (L, a, b), bulk density, true density, porosity and coefficient of static friction were determined for both the varieties. The determined properties had significant difference in their values which may be due to the distinctive features of both the varieties.
Przedstawione badania zostały przeprowadzone w celu oceny niektórych właściwości fizycznych owoców palmy daktylowej odmian Khadrawy i Medjool. Dla obydwu odmian oceniano wilgotność miąższu, wilgotność nasion, wymiary owoców (wielka i mała oś), średnią arytmetyczną średnicę, średnią geometryczną średnicę, kołowość, wartości barwy (L, a, b), gęstość usypową, gęstość rzeczywistą, porowatość i współczynnik tarcia statycznego. Wartości badanych właściwości wykazywały znaczące różnice międzyodmianowe, które mogły wynikać z cech charakterystycznych obydwu odmian.

The trend of utilization of low-grade thermal energy gain huge attention due to increase in energy demand and depletion of conventional resources of energy. Low grade energy can be used in ORC-VCR cycle for refrigeration purpose. In the present work, to improve the performance a modified ORC-VCR cycle, recuperator and reheater are integrated in the cycle. The thermodynamic analysis of the modified system has been conducted with R600a, R600, R290 and R1270 as working fluids under various operating conditions viz. evaporator temperature, condenser temperature, boiler exit temperature. Different parameters evaluated to assess the performance are overall COP, mass flow rate per kW cooling capacity, expansion ratio and compression ratio. From the analysis, butane is found as a best choice for the modified ORC–VCR cycle. It was found that for the modified ORC-VCR cycle at boiler exit temperature of 90°C and condenser temperature 40°C has system COP of 0.5542 with butane, which is 7.1% and 18% higher than that of ORC-VCR cycle with recuperator and simple ORC-VCR cycle, respectively.

As the cost of fuel rises, designing efficient solar air heaters (SAH) becomes increasingly important. By artificially roughening the absorber plate, solar air heaters’ performance can be augmented. Turbulators in different forms like ribs, delta winglets, vortex generators, etc. have been introduced to create local wall turbulence or for vortex generation. In the present work, a numerical investigation on a solar air heater has been conducted to examine the effect of three distinct turbulators (namely D-shaped, reverse D- and U-shaped) on the SAH thermo-hydraulic performance. The simulation has been carried out using the computational fluid dynamics, an advanced and modern simulation technique for Reynolds numbers ranging from 4000 to 18000 (turbulent airflow). For the purpose of comparison, constant ratios of turbulator height/hydraulic diameter and pitch/turbulator height, of 0.021 and 14.28, respectively, were adopted for all SAH configurations. Furthermore, the fluid flow has also been analyzed using turbulence kinetic energy and velocity contours. It was observed that the U-shaped turbulator has the highest value of Nusselt number followed by D-shaped and reverse D-shaped turbulators. However, in terms of friction factor, the D-shaped configuration has the highest value followed by reverse D-shaped and U-shaped geometries. It can be concluded that among all SAH configurations considered, the U-shaped has outperformed in terms of thermohydraulic performance factor.

Opis:
Thermal augmentation in flat tube of car radiator using different nanofluids has been performed more often, but use of artificial roughness has been seldom done. Artificial roughness in the form of dimple is used in the present research work. Present study shows the impact of dimple shaped roughness and nanofluid (Al2O3/pure water) on the performance of car radiator. The pitch of dimples is kept at 15 mm (constant) for all the studies performed. The Reynolds number of the flow is selected in the turbulent regime ranging from 9350 to 23 000 and the concentration of the nanofluid is taken in the range of 0.1–1%. It has been found that the heat transfer rate has improved significantly in dimpled radiator tube on the expense of pumping power. Furthermore, the heat transfer rate also increases with increase in nanoparticle concentration from 0.1% to 1.0%. The highest heat transfer enhancement of 79% is observed at Reynolds number 9350, while least enhancement of 18% is observed for Reynolds number of 23 000.

In this paper the investigation of the FSW result characteristics on AA7075-T6 of the highest grade is carried out using different process parameters. A vertical milling machine with different FSW tool geometry is used to weld AA7075. When the tool rotational speed varies from 1200 and 1800 (rpm), different welding parameters are studied, the plunge depth of tool is between 0.14 and 0.20 mm, the table transverse speed range is between 20 and 50 (mm/min) and the tool shoulder diameter was 20 mm. The welding settings are optimized using the Taguchi approach. In this experimental investigation Taguchi Technique is utilized in this study to optimize three factorial and three level designs. The results show that when the rotating speed increases, the UTS of the welded joint increases, whereas the tensile strength of the welded joint decreases resulting to frictional heat created during the FSW process. Tensile strength decreases as feed increases and increases as rotational speed increases. For a 5 mm thick plate, tensile strength is optimal with a tool shoulder diameter of 20 mm, a rotational speed of 1600 rpm, feed rate of 30 mm/min and plunge depth. The shoulder diameter of 20 mm provides the maximum ultimate tensile strength when it is compared with all other tool shoulder diameter. The Al alloy AA7075-T6 plates, however, concurrently developed an equiaxial grain structure with a substantially smaller grain size and coarsened the precipitates.

Due to the minimal transfer of heat from absorber plate to moving air in the duct, solar air heaters have low performance. One of the procedures to augment the heat transfer by substantial amount is by utilizing artificial roughness, by which the performance can be improved considerably. In this study, an economic investigation of solar air heater embedded with artificial roughness is accomplished numerically employing v-shaped roughness, with the objective of optimising life cycle solar savings. The non-dimensional parameters of roughness, namely, angle of attack (α), roughness pitch (p/e) and roughness height (e/Dh) are examined by varying temperature rise over the solar air heater (∆T) and solar radiations (I) for different economic parameters values i.e., cost of collector, cost of roughness elements, and cost of conventional fuel.
