- Opis:
- Belgium became a federation in 1993 after the constitutional reform, which definitely divided the country into three cultural Communities (Flemish, French-speaking, Germanspeaking) and three Regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels Capital Region). Ironically, in Belgium, which hosts the largest number of European institutions, being the symbol of integration, the motivations for separation of the country become very clear. In this context, the article analyses the situation on the Belgian political scene during the first decade of the XXI century. Characterisation of the problems between Flemish and Walloons and the attempts to solve them by the consecutive governments of Verhofstadt, Leterme and Rompuy show very deep polarization of Belgium society. Looking into this division in a broader socio-political perspective is, at the same time, an attempt to answer the question whether the features of the Belgian bilateral federation guarantee its status quo.
