Opis:
Experiments were conducted to study the sorption behaviour of dimethoate in three Indian soils at different temperatures. A kinetic study showed that adsorption equilibrium was reached within 15 h at different initial levels of pesticide concentration. Applicability of the pseudo second order kinetic model suggested that the adsorption process was complex and several mechanisms were involved. The Freundlich model explained the adsorption behaviour adequately and the isotherms were of S-type. The adsorption process was found to be strongly affected by temperature. The Gibbs free energy change, ΔGº values (from -15.81 to -16.60 kJ mol-1) indicated that the process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The change in enthalpy of adsorption, ΔH° values (from -17.729 to -21.539 kJ mol-1) suggested that relatively weak H-bond forces were the main driving forces for adsorption. Desorption was found to be concentration- and temperature-depen- dent with higher desorption occurring at higher temperature and concentration levels. The results signify the importance of temperature in controlling the mobility of dimethoate in water bodies.

Opis:
Molecular dynamics (torsional frequencies) in several chlorine compounds were evaluated on the basis of X-ray thermal parameter data and nuclear quadrupole resonance data using Bayer's and Brown's approximation. It was found that the values obtained in both cases are in good agreement. The above approach is a good illustration of the supplementary nature of the data from X-ray studies in relation to nuclear quadrupole resonance studies of compounds in solid state.

Opis:
Measurement of the sound absorption coefficient using an impedance tube is prone to errors due to various reasons. Conventionally minimising the errors requires additional hardware or proper calibration of many components used for measurement. This paper proposes a new error correction mechanism using a filtering technique. A low cost impedance tube was designed, developed and its performance was compared with a commercially available high cost tube. The errors which arose during the measurement of the sound absorption coefficient were minimised using different types of filters (low pass, band pass, LMS filtering). The purpose of the filter is to eliminate unwanted signals or noise which occur during the processing of analogue signals in the experiment. The system proposed was tested using various porous and non-porous functional textile materials and the results validated. A significant reduction in error was obtained at all frequency ranges with digital filters.

Opis:
This paper presents a novel approach for reactive power planning of a connected power network. Reactive power planning is nothing but the optimal usage of all reactive power sources i.e., transformer tap setting arrangements, reactive generations of generators and shunt VAR compensators installed at weak nodes. Shunt VAR compensator placement positions are determined by a FVSI (Fast Voltage Stability Index) method. Optimal setting of all reactive power reserves are determined by a GA (genetic algorithm) based optimization method. The effectiveness of the detection of the weak nodes by the FVSI method is validated by comparing the result with two other wellknown methods of weak node detection like Modal analysis and the L-index method. Finally, FVSI based allocation of VAR sources emerges as the most suitable method for reactive power planning.

Opis:
The paper reports meiotic studies on 50 populations comprising 12 species belonging to 5 genera of Caryophyllaceae from the Western Himalayas. The chromosome numbers in Arenaria kashmirica (n=20), Silene conoidea (n=20), S. edgeworthii (n=12 and n=24), S. moorcroftiana (n=24), S. nepalensis (n=12), Stellaria media (n=13), S. monosperma (n=13) and S. semivestita (n=13) are reported for the first time. The chromosome numbers in Lychnis coronaria (n=12) and Silene vulgaris (n=24) are given for the first time from India, along with Gypsophilla ceratioides (n=15) from the Western Himalayas. The course of meiosis varies from normal to abnormal in different populations of Silene conoidea, S. edgeworthii, S. vulgaris, Stellaria media, S. monosperma and S. semivestita. The course of meiosis was abnormal in all studied populations of Lychnis coronaria. Abnormal microsporogenesis (cytomixis, chromosomal stickiness, unoriented bivalents, formation of laggards and bridges) led to reduced pollen fertility and differences in pollen grain size.

Opis:
In continuation of our previous work, the current study explores an environmentally benign approach for the control of Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) using a synergistic combination of α,bT-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (1a-1e; 2a-2i) and the natural products, neem oil (N1) and nicotinic acid (N2). Our approach also evaluates the insecticidal activity of 3-(5-chloro-1,3-diaryl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1-arylprop-2-en-1-one(2j-2o) consisting of bioactive moieties, viz., chalcone and pyrazole, in a single molecular structure. Compounds 2l and 2o exhibited maximum activity with 58% and 50 % of mortality, respectively, under laboratory conditions. Among various test combinations, 2a-N2 showed maximum insecticidal activity, with 54% mortality, comparable to that of the most active newly synthesized compound, 2l, followed by 1c-N1 and 2g-N2 with 52% mortality. The compound 2a was also found to be non-toxic to potato tuber used as a plant substrate in the current investigation.

Opis:
Land-cover by land-use shows the influence of human on earth surface by different phenomena’s, ecological processes and human activities, its indication is a parameter of measurement how and with which extent the human influenced the natural surface with temporal variations. The change detection technique is used based upon the temporal observations from 2000 to 2015. Study area is one of the most populated city of Pakistan where industrial revolution is at its peak. The whole study area is categorized into four classes (i.e. Agricultural, Barren, Built-up and semi natural surfaces). The observational intervals were divided into three main classes i.e. 2000 to 2005, 2005 to 2010 and 2010 to 2015. Remarkable changes were occurred in built up area from 2000 to 2015 which is 38.6 % of total area, while the total change/decreased in barren land is -332 9(ha), similarly the Parks and grasses are also in decreasing extent and affect the local biodiversity and natural environment. The land cover is directly proportional to population expansion of urban city. For making the prediction of future urban expansion, previously occurred changes were aggregated to come up with a single value and then adding it to the recent land-use values. The mapping and analysis was undertaken through techniques of remote sensing and GIS, which proved to be very effective to measure the changes, and trend of changes with time, this mapping not only tells us the scale of change but, also tells us the patterns and the forces which causes these changes.
