Opis:
The author of the present study deals with the whole complex of religious, cultural and artistic phenomenon linked with the rise of the European Reformation with special regard to the situation of Central and Eastern Europe and in the Slavonic literary world. He attempts to demonstrate that there are some pre-reformation streams which came into existence in the period of the Hussite wars and had a much differentiated shape and structure. The roots of the Reformation process in its initial and ideological substance are intereresting as typical phenomena of Central European social and religious thought inspired by various currents, often of Eastern origin, connected with buddhism, manicheism and zoroastrianism. Though the Reformation is sometimes understood as a phenomenon leading to disintegration of hitherto existing universal structures of European thought, it, on the contrary, led to a new attempt at the restoration and renovation of former unity of thought forming one cultural and artistic whole. In the centre of this interpretation there is Petr Chelčický as an inspirer of the Czech/Moravian Brethren, Comenius as a bishop of this first non-Catholic Christian Church in the world some 200 years later and his pansophy as an attempt at the synthesis and universal view coming into existence under the impact of the tragedies of European religious clashes and wars also reflected in his artistic creations. The Baroque art, initially the weapon of Counter-Reformation, was gradually becoming a synthetic style acceptable both by all the enlightened European intellectuals and by wider circles of Christian population as its folk type. We can hardly understand these phenomena without taking into consideration their different realisations in the West and in the East — from England to Russia — including the literature dealing with them.

Opis:
The author of the present study deals with the wider understanding of humour going back to Hippocrates ‘conception of four humours in human body and to its English Renaissance interpretation (Ben Jonson’s humoral theory). Humour was understood as the phenomenon leading to the mobilisation of psychic qualities of man which could demonstrate either joy and laughter or pain, spleen and tears, both comic and tragic aspects of human life; this conception was, therefore, much wider than that of comism and caricature. The author of the study seeks this wider conception of humour in Shakespeare’s “bitter comedies” and in some plays written by the 19th-century Russian dramatists {A. S.Griboyedov, A. V. Suchovo-Kobylin, M. Ye. Saltykov-Shchedrin} reflecting similar approaches in Gogol’s short storie and in his Dead Souls; later it appeared in the short stories of F. M. Dostoevsky and F. Kafka. This kind of humour arises from the confrontation of the usual and tolerable and the unusual and intolerable; it always means ambiguity and uncertainty. Humour has two faces like fire: it can be a good servant, but a bad master, as well as medicine has a double substance (the means leading to health or a poison leading to death). Such paradoxical and surprising features of humour can be found in Kafka’s novels, especially in The Castle (“inverted romance”) or in the Czech émigré writer Egon Hostovsky. The author of the study presents the case of the latest novel written by the Czech- German novelist Ota Filip (bom 1930), a sort of a confession interopreting his collaboration with the Czechoslovak communist secret police (the revelation of this fact led Ota Filip’s son to suicide in Germany). The novel called The Seventh Curriculum Vitae represents a special kind of a confessional chronicle in which the traces of a wider conception of humour as the means of the mobilisation of human psychology were being liquidated by the general skeptical understanding of the history of mankind. The author of the study manifests Filip’s “humour” by several passages concerning his favourite reading (Camus’ novels), the contrast of sex and politics reminding us of Yu. Bondarev and of M. Kundera’s Joke, and the ridiculous introduction of the Russian game “gorodki” into communist Czechoslovakia after 1948.The theoretical aspect of the present study reveals the fact that humour and its manifestations are closely associated with the general generic frame of the artifact, in this case with the confessional chronicle evoking the tragedy of the individual under the impact of history.

The author of the present study tries to answer the question from the title about the contemporary state and the future of Slavonic literary studies in connection with other disciplines, e.g., comparative and genre studies, their crises and shifts of methodological emphases. According to the author, the future perspectives of Slavonic studies are associated with the relatively constant entity of the subject, the Slavonic phenomenon or the Slavonic world as marking or delimiting the boundaries of Slavonic studies as an independent or autonomous discipline, and with their open or semi-open character in the philological framework, dynamic borders and transcending towards the cultural-area concept without losing their philological kernel.

Opis:
The author of the present study deals with the contemporary state of memoir liter-ature based on the analysis of some recent Czech and Slovak memoirs. The prob-lem of contemporary memoir texts is connected with the position of the memoirist in the society, his courage and openness. In the past the author dealt with the chronicle and the novel-chronicle and with the whole layer of genres situated on the boundary of fiction and nonfiction (diary, essay, reportage, column, memoirs etc.). His typology of the memoir literature is based on the three-level structure (theme, structure and genre, narrative strategy). He prefers to call contemporary memoir literature because its structure is very heterogeneous, and the fear of the memoirist, his anxiety and aversion to express too radical views lead to soft focus, uncertainty, evasiveness, the lack of clear opinions – there are the characteristic features of contemporary memoir literature as a reflection of the state of the world and the man of the second decade of the 21 century. These features are being demonstrated at the works written by Czech and Slovak writers, significant personal-ities of culture, politicians, artists etc. The postmodernist understanding of virtuality and uncertainty, ambivalence of the truth and the lie reflect the pressure of contem-porary world as rationally inexplicable and generally incomprehensible in the sense of the knowledge of the principles of its construction and functioning which is asso-ciated with the problem of the evident and hidden power. In such a world the human being feels alone and lost.

Opis:
The article discusses a concept of Central Europe and its research implications, as seen within their importance to the Slavonic Studies in Brno. An essential element of any discussion about Central Europe (thus East and West) is a cultural dialogue. The author of the article understands such a dialogue as not only a gentle coexistence and peaceful supplementation but also – a creative confrontation of the participating parties. Under deliberations are also: a problem of evaluating some cultures against others, terms that reveal the off¬ putting attitudes and stereotypes used by some researchers when cultures and literatures of Central Europe are written about. The author analyses the tradition of “Central¬ Europeanness” and places it within a wide cultural context. The question about a future of this concept as well as the status of homo Europae centralis is also posited.

three waves of postsecularism in Russian literature
Opis:
This article deals with the general problems of the secular and postsecular, but mainly with the specific features of Russian cultural and literary development characterized by the conception of the pre–post effect (the imperfect imitation of Western models that leads to new artistic revelations) and by unfinished secularization, the consequence of which is the permanent presence of sacral elements. In Russian literature, there are three stages of postsecularism that are related to romanticism, modernism and postmodernism; these are demonstrated on the examples of two case studies (Bondarev, Vodolazkin). The general characteristics of Russian postsecularism are closely related to the typical Russian unfinishedness, incompleteness and openness, thus indicating a new development potential that leads to new poetics and constituted artifacts.
