Opis:
Today, in cities and postindustrial agglomerations the presence of degraded areas, their scale, lack of ideas for re-use, breadth of hazards, lack of planning tools and methods and financial resources, makes the restoration of balance between nature and culture, while meeting the needs of man, is complicated. The restoration of the landscape, equivalent to the achievement of balance between the natural and built environment becomes, in many cases, a luxury that not every city or region can afford. In many cases, however, what constitutes a threat can become an opportunity to create a new image of the postindustrial areas. Sometimes the bold vision and a creative approach are enough to see in the degraded landscape the beauty and turn it into a new quality. The new landscape is creating, which can be harmonious despite the scale of transformations. The challenge for the conversion of postindustrial landscapes is a combination of technological solutions with the social and environmental factor, while the process of creative finding new values. In this context, identification of natural values of the postindustrial areas, an indication of particularly valuable places worthy of protection, preservation or processing, and new management, took on special significance. An opportunity that can bring the postindustrial areas economic, social and environmental benefits becomes the use of the anthropogenic elements of the natural environment such as: dumps, pits or artificial water reservoirs. Creating through them a new landscape the features of the individual degraded elements are no longer only peculiarities, they become distinctive values of an area. In combination with the possibility of forming a new image and the necessary technical innovation, these values are an attraction, whose popularity and skillful use can restore the spatial order and affect the perception way of contemporary cities and postindustrial agglomerations.

Opis:
The paper discusses epidemiological and clinical data as well as therapeutic and diagnostic methods with regard to Lyme disease. Main manifestations of early (erythema migrans, borrelial lymphoma, Lyme carditis, neuroborreliosis and Lyme arthritis) and late (neuroborreliosis, Lyme arthritis, acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans) Lyme borreliosis are described and their treatment is discussed. The most useful antibiotics are doxycycline and ceftriaxone. It was noted that in most cases of Lyme disease the prognosis is good, and antibiotic treatment is very effective regardless of the stage of infection. Detection of specific anti-Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in a patient with a history of a tick bite and clinical symptoms suggesting Lyme disease is necessary for diagnosis. The results of serological tests must be interpreted carefully and always in connection with the clinical picture. A seropositivity without clinical symptoms of the disease does not necessarily prove an active infection. Antibody serum titres should not be used to assess therapeutic efficacy or be regarded as an indication for a re-treatment. Current recommendations stress that detection of chemokine CXCL13, searching for B. burgdorferi antigens in the cerebrospinal fluid and urine, searching for B. Burgdorferi spheroplasts or L-forms as well as CD57+/CD3 subpopulation assessment as well as lymphocyte transformation test have no confirmed diagnostic significance in Lyme disease diagnostics.
W pracy omówiono dane epidemiologiczne, obraz kliniczny, leczenie oraz metody diagnostyczne boreliozy z Lyme. Przedstawiono podstawowe manifestacje boreliozy wczesnej (erythema migrans, borrelial lymphoma, Lyme carditis, neuroborreliosis i Lyme arthritis) i późnej (neuroborreliosis, Lyme arthritis, acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans).

Opis:
The phenomena of neuroinvasiveness, latency and reactivation are characteristics of the Herpes simplex virus (HSV). The Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) prevalence rate is 1 up to 3 in a million cases, which is about 10-20% of all viral encephalitis cases. The course of the disease shows the prodromal period and the symptomatic one; the clinical course is usually rapid and may lead to sudden death. As for the symptomatic period, there are usually neurological focal symptoms and seizures as well as fluctuating consciousness leading to coma. The mortality rate in the course of HSE in non-treated individuals reaches up to 70%, it is lowered to 15% with early treatment with Acyclovir. However, most patients present persistent neurological and cognitive disorders. There are usually no changes in the CT scan as far as the early stage of the disease is concerned. Thus, the imaging technique of choice is MR scan, which shows the changes already on the second day after clinical symptoms. On the basis of MR scans, more or less symmetrical hyperintense cortical and subcortical white matter lesions occur on T2-weighted images with gyral and/or leptomeningeal contrast enhancement. MR spectroscopy can be helpful in lesion diagnosis and monitoring, while diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can be used to evaluate inflammatory process activity. Differentiation of HSE in imaging should consider limbic encephalitis, gliomatosis cerebri, cerebral ischemia, cerebral edema after seizure episodes, and MELAS syndrome (Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like episodes), among others. HSV identification in cerebrospinal fluid by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) method is a confirmation of the diagnosis.

Opis:
Purpose: Multiple cellular functions are stimulated by a Insulin-like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I). The biological activity of IGF-I is modulated by IGFbinding proteins (IGF-BPs) and at the same time, the availability of IGF-BPs may be regulated by the proteolytic activity of some metalloproteinases (MMPs). The aim of the present study was to compare the amounts of IGF-I and IGF-BPs in relation to the activity of MMP-9 in serum and knee synovial fluid from patients with Lyme arthritis (LA) and post-traumatic damage (PTD). Material and methods: Serum and synovial fluids were taken from knee joints of patients with PTD and LA. ELISA (for IGF-I assay), polyacrylamine gel electrophoresis following Western immuneblotting (for IGF-I and IGF-BPs expression), and zymography (for metalloproteinases detection), were used. Results: The concentration of IGF-I in serum and synovial fluid from LA patients were significantly lowered in comparison to PTD patients. Interesting, the synovial fluid /serum ratio of IGF-I concentrations was also lower in LA patients. Low expression IGF-BP3 and high activity of MMP-9 were detected in the LA synovial fluid. Conclusions: The high proteolytic activity of MMP- 9 results in a cleavage of both IGF-I and IGF-BP3 causing a decrease in content of these substances in LA synovial fluid. In addition, the reduction in IGF and IGF-BP amounts may affect the repair processes in joint tissues of LA patients. The low concentration of IGF-I and IGF-BP3 slows down the repair processes in the joint tissues of LA patients.

Opis:
Sera of 39 farmers, 119 foresters and 32 blood donors were investigated for the presence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi, A. phagocytophilum, B. microti and Bartonella spp. Semi-quantitative indirect immunofluorescence test was used to measure titers of anti-A. phagocytophilum, B. microti and Bartonella spp. IgG. ELISA test was used to measure titers of anti-B. burgdorferi IgM and IgG. B. burgdorferi was the most frequently observed among all the examined pathogens. 27.7% of farmers, 23.1% of forestry workers and 37.5% of control group were infected with Bartonella spp. Anti-A. phagocytophilum and anti-B. microti reactions were observed rarely. Sera of persons with single infection dominated in farmers and forestry workers. Co-infection with 2 pathogens was observed more frequently in forestry workers and farmers than in the control group. Co-infections with 3-4 pathogens were observed only in forestry workers. Among the observed co-infections, the most frequent were: B. burgdorferi with Bartonella spp. and B. burgdorferi with A. phagocytophilum. Moreover, in forestry workers, triple coinfections with B. burgdorferi, Bartonella spp. and A. phagocytophilum and one quadruple coinfection were observed. Persons with occupational risk of tick bites, especially forestry workers, more often have anti-B. burgdorferi antibodies and are more often co-infected with various tick-borne pathogens than the persons from the control group. It seems that more often coinfections in persons with occupational risk of tick bites are a consequence of the higher incidence of infection with B. burgdorferi, as anti-B. microti, A. phagocytophilum and Bartonella spp. antibodies are not more commonly prevalent in persons with occupational risk of tick bites than in healthy volunteers.
