Opis:
The p-spectrum method is a time domain spectroscopy-based technique for reflection analysis of materials (including explosives) that takes into account only part of the reflected signal, which is next analyzed via the Fourier transform. The method is limited to the frequencies of about 1.8 THz due to the pulse properties of our time domain spectroscopy setup. In this paper we theoretically prove that application of a shorter pulse can increase this frequency range up to 2.2 THz, that enables analysis of penthrite and octogen, two important explosives.

In this paper, we report on measurements of reflection spectra of hexogen (RDX) by means of time domain spectroscopy. We analyzed both phase and amplitude of reflected impulses for three cases: detuning, samples with rough surfaces and samples with curved surfaces. It can be concluded that both spectral characteristics can be applied for identification of explosives in the reflection configuration.

We studied focusing properties of 2D square photonic crystal with concavo-concavo boundaries. The photonic crystal is built by air holes in a uniform dielectric. The incident plane wave propagates through a section of the photonic crystal and efficient focusing is observed by finite difference time domain simulations. To analyze the properties of photonic crystal we calculated the photonic band structure and equal frequency contours for TE modes. In our simulation we consider influence of geometry of the concave structures on the focusing properties.

The application of pattern recognition methodology within chemistry, biology and other science domains, especially in security systems is becoming more and more important. Many classification algorithms are available in literature but decision trees are the most commonly exploited because of their ease of implementation and understanding in comparison to other classification algorithms. Decision trees are powerful and popular tools for classification and prediction. In contrast to neural networks, decision trees represent rules, which can readily be expressed so that humans can understand them or even directly use in a database. In this paper we present an algorithm of construction of decision trees and a classification rule extraction based on a logical relationship between attributes and a generalized decision function. Moreover, correctness and efficiency of the algorithm was experimentally validated in a terahertz system, where spectra of explosives were measured in reflection configuration.

Determining the dependence of phase difference modulations between light pulses in a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer was used to develop an optical system coding the information and working as an eavesdropping sensor for an optical fibre information exchange system. The basic challenge in the system development is to maintain stable operation in changing environmental conditions, as well as to ensure optimal parameters of the phase modulator. The system was tested for various many-kilometer long transmission lines of single-mode fibres. The research was focused on achieving the normative Bit Error Rate for the system in the 100 Mbit/s range (STM-1). Such a system can be used in commercial applications for the code key secure transmission in the physical layer of the link.

Terahertz imaging makes it possible to acquire images of objects concealed underneath clothing by measuring the radiometric temperatures of different objects on a human subject. Finding objects hidden under clothes is one of key issues of public places security. A possible solution of this problem is a multispectral, terahertz-based screening system with implemented image fusion algorithm. The result of the fusion is a new image which gives more information and is more suitable for human perception. An imaging system is usually composed of various subsystems. Many of the imaging systems use imaging devices working in various spectral ranges. The aim of our studies is to detect and visualize objects hidden under clothing. Detection of potentially dangerous objects is important, but without proper visualization, can be difficult to utilize. Our goal is to build a system harmless to humans for screening and detection of hidden objects using a THz and VIS cameras. The presented system draws attention not only on the properties offered by a single camera but also on the potential of synergetic effects of the system by using the fusion of data registered by different sensor units. In this paper we present the multispectral passive imaging system for hidden threats visualization based on THz and VIS cameras.

This work presents a terahertz system designed for the reflection spectroscopy of different materials located at a distance up to 5 m. The source of the radiation is a tunable solid-state optical parametric oscillator, which generates a narrow-band nanosecond pulses in the range of 0.7-2.5 THz. The signal is detected with relatively fast and having big sensitivity hot electron bolometer. The detailed description of each device and the functioning of the experimental setup are provided as well as the methodology of the measurement is explained. Investigations were performed in the 0.7-2.2 THz range in free space with relative humidity of about 40%. The experiment was divided into three series, each of which was carried out with different distance between the examined sample and the system - 1 m, 3 m, and 5 m. Obtained spectra of selected materials, including explosives, are similar to the results received from a purged time domain spectroscopy system. The observed small deviations are connected with fluctuations of the laser wavelength and the instability of the bolometer.

Rozwój turystyki w wielu regionach kraju następuje poprzez promowanie idei tworzenia i promocji produktów markowych. Takie produkty pozostają w pamięci turysty, jako produkty unikalne, dostarczające wielu korzyści. Mają one sprawiać, aby konsumenci usług turystycznych chcieli w dane miejsce wracać oraz polecać innym. Zróżnicowanie świętokrzyskich obszarów wiejskich stwarza potrzebę podjęcia wielu różnorodnych działań przez miejscowe samorządy oraz zaangażowane organizacje i mieszkańców w celu wykreowania marki odpowiadającej oczekiwaniom turystów.
The study aims to analyse the market image of agritourism product and preferences of prospective tourists with respect to leisure time at agritourism farms. The statistical sample was selected from the residents of the city of Kielce. Representatives of four social and professional groups took part in the investigations carried out in 2011. The choice of participants was purposeful as the groups were composed of individuals relatively frequently spending their leisure time at agritourism farms. The investigations indicate that rather than reflecting tourists’ personal experience, the image of agritourism product is often created on the basis of prevailing general opinions (e.g. those presented in the media). Though a majority of the interviewees were able to specify their expectations concerning the tourist product, yet it was difficult for them to put forward demands as regards the product character. The investigations seem to confirm the thesis that being interested in agritourism does not necessarily mean taking up an offer of agritourism farms. The development of tourism in many regions of the country relies on creating and promoting brand products. Those are remembered by tourists as unique and capable of generating a lot of benefits. Brand products are meant to make consumers of tourist services come back to a given place and recommend the object to others. The diversification of rural areas in the Świętokrzyskie Province makes it necessary to take multiple and varied tasks by the local governments, organisations and residents to create brands that will meet expectations of the tourists.

Opis:
Nowadays, in positron emission tomography (PET) systems, a time of fl ight (TOF) information is used to improve the image reconstruction process. In TOF-PET, fast detectors are able to measure the difference in the arrival time of the two gamma rays, with the precision enabling to shorten signifi cantly a range along the line-of-response (LOR) where the annihilation occurred. In the new concept, called J-PET scanner, gamma rays are detected in plastic scintillators. In a single strip of J-PET system, time values are obtained by probing signals in the amplitude domain. Owing to compressive sensing (CS) theory, information about the shape and amplitude of the signals is recovered. In this paper, we demonstrate that based on the acquired signals parameters, a better signal normalization may be provided in order to improve the TOF resolution. The procedure was tested using large sample of data registered by a dedicated detection setup enabling sampling of signals with 50-ps intervals. Experimental setup provided irradiation of a chosen position in the plastic scintillator strip with annihilation gamma quanta.

In this article we present a novel method of hit time and hit position reconstruction in long scintillator detectors. We take advantage of the fact that for this kind of detectors amplitude and shape of registered signals depend strongly on the position where particle hits the detector. The reconstruction is based on determination of the degree of similarity between measured and averaged signals stored in a library for a set of well-defined positions along the scintillator. Preliminary results of validation of the introduced method with experimental data obtained by means of the double strip prototype of the J-PET detector are presented.

A method for creating linearly polarized positrons and ortho-positronium (o-Ps) atoms with the J-PET detector is presented. The unique geometry and properties of the J-PET tomography enable one to design a positron source such that the quantization axis for the estimation of the linear polarization of produced o-Ps can be determined on the event by event basis in a direction of the positron motion. We intend to use ²²Na or other β⁺ decay isotopes as a source of polarized positrons. Due to the parity violation in the beta decay, the emitted positrons are longitudinally polarized. The choice of the quantization axis is based on the known position of the positron emitter and the reconstructed position of the positronium annihilation. We show that the J-PET tomography is equipped with all needed components.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy has shown to be a powerful tool to study the nanostructures of porous materials. Positron emission tomograph is a device allowing imaging of metabolic processes e.g. in human bodies. A newly developed device, the Jagiellonian PET will allow positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in addition to imaging, thus combining both analyses providing new methods for physics and medicine. In this contribution we present a computer program that is compatible with the Jagiellonian PET software. We compare its performance with the standard program LT 9.0 by using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy data from hexane measurements at different temperatures. Our program is based on an iterative procedure, and our fits prove that it performs as good as LT 9.0.

The Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph project carried out in the Institute of Physics of the Jagiellonian University is focused on construction and tests of the first prototype of PET scanner for medical diagnostic which allows for the simultaneous 3D imaging of the whole human body using organic scintillators. The J-PET prototype consists of 192 scintillator strips forming three cylindrical layers which are optimized for the detection of photons from the electron-positron annihilation with high time-and high angular resolutions. In this article we present time calibration and synchronization of the whole J-PET detection system by irradiating each single detection module with a ²²Na source and a small detector providing common reference time for synchronization of all the modules.

Opis:
The J-PET detector being developed at the Jagiellonian University is a positron emission tomograph composed of the long strips of polymer scintillators. At the same time, it is a detector system that will be used for studies of the decays of positronium atoms. The shape of photomultiplier signals depends on the hit time and hit position of the gamma quantum. In order to take advantage of this fact, a dedicated sampling front-end electronics that enables to sample signals in voltage domain with the time precision of about 20 ps and novel reconstruction method based on the comparison of examined signal with the model signals stored in the library has been developed. As a measure of the similarity, we use the Mahalanobis distance. The achievable position and time resolution depend on the number and values of the threshold levels at which the signal is sampled. A reconstruction method as well as preliminary results are presented and discussed.

The additional measurements were performed either in darkness or in presence of visible light which influenced the free radicals present in both kind of tissues and, as a result, made changes in free annihilation and o-Ps decay lifetime and intensity values.

Opis:
In this paper, we present prospects for using the Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph (J-PET) detector to search for discrete symmetries violations in a purely leptonic system of the positronium atom. We discuss tests of CP and CPT symmetries by means of ortho-positronium decays into three photons. No zero expectation values for chosen correlations between ortho-positronium spin and momentum vectors of photons would imply the existence of physics phenomena beyond the standard model. Previous measurements resulted in violation amplitude parameters for CP and CPT symmetries consistent with zero, with an uncertainty of about 10−3. The J-PET detector allows to determine those values with better precision, thanks to the unique time and angular resolution combined with a high geometrical acceptance. Achieving the aforementioned is possible because of the application of polymer scintillators instead of crystals as detectors of annihilation quanta.

Results of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and microscopic studies on simple microorganisms, brewing yeasts, are presented. Lifetime of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) were found to change from 2.4 to 2.9 ns (longer-lived component) for lyophilized and aqueous yeasts, respectively. Also hygroscopicity of yeasts in time was examined, allowing to check how water – the main component of the cell – affects PALS parameters, thus lifetime of o-Ps were found to change from 1.2 to 1.4 ns (shorter-lived component) for the dried yeasts. The time sufficient to hydrate the cells was found below 10 hours. In the presence of liquid water, an indication of reorganization of yeast in the molecular scale was observed. Microscopic images of the lyophilized, dried, and wet yeasts with best possible resolution were obtained using inverted microscopy (IM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) methods. As a result, visible changes to the surface of the cell me mbrane were observed in ESEM images.

Opis:
The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) collaboration is developing a prototype time of flight (TOF)-positron emission tomograph (PET) detector based on long polymer scintillators. This novel approach exploits the excellent time properties of the plastic scintillators, which permit very precise time measurements. The very fast fi eld programmable gate array (FPGA)-based front-end electronics and the data acquisition system, as well as low- and high-level reconstruction algorithms were specially developed to be used with the J-PET scanner. The TOF-PET data processing and reconstruction are time and resource demanding operations, especially in the case of a large acceptance detector that works in triggerless data acquisition mode. In this article, we discuss the parallel computing methods applied to optimize the data processing for the J-PET detector. We begin with general concepts of parallel computing and then we discuss several applications of those techniques in the J-PET data processing.
