We present a detailed positron 2D-ACAR measurements study of the "ridge" Fermi surface of (R)Ba$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$ (R = Y, Dy) compared to full-potential linearized augmented plane wave and linear muffin-tin orbital calculations. From different 2D-ACAR projections measured in DyBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$, a 3D model of the momentum density of the ridge was established and is in good agreement with LMTO calculations of YΒa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7}$, confirming the description of the ridge Fermi surface by local density approximation calculations. The ridge is also studied in oxygen deficient YΒa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$. With growing δ, the ridge disappears without changing in width. This is consistent with full-potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations of YΒa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{6.5}$, and supports the phase separation model of Mesot et al.

Let ϕ be a surjective map on the space of n×n complex matrices such that r(ϕ(A)-ϕ(B))=r(A-B) for all A,B, where r(X) is the spectral radius of X. We show that ϕ must be a composition of five types of maps: translation, multiplication by a scalar of modulus one, complex conjugation, taking transpose and (simultaneous) similarity. In particular, ϕ is real linear up to a translation.

The former Research Laboratory for Crystal Physics continues the growth and defect structure investigation of nonlinear optical single crystals in a new organization, as a part of the Research Institute for Solid State Physics and Optics, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The aim of the activity is to prepare specific crystals for basic and applied research as well as for applications. We improve the quality or modify the properties of well known nonlinear oxide and borate crystals and develop new materials. The principle nonlinear optical crystals in our profile are the followings: Paratellurite (TeO2), congruent, Mg-doped and stoichiometric lithium niobate (LiNbO3), a variety of sillenite structured crystals (Bi12MeO20, Me=Si, Ge, Ti, etc.), bismuth tellurite (Bi2TeO5) and nonlinear borates (BBO-beta-BaB2O4, LBO-LiB3O5, LTB-Li2B4O7, CLBO-CsLiB6O10 and YAB-YAI3(BO3)4). Details of the crystal preparation and the major achievements are discussed in the paper.

Evidence-based medicine is the current undisputed predominant paradigm within medicine and allied health care. Guidelines for standardized reporting of research findings have facilitated critical evaluation of the relevant research literature. In addition, systematic reviews of the literature made available through computerized databases allow even busy clinicians and researchers rapid access to current best evidence. Despite the potential benefits of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) to clinical practice, over the years various points of criticism with respect to EBM have been formulated. This article provides a critical appraisal of the EBM paradigm discussing perceptions of EBM as cookbook medicine, inconsistency and contradiction in research findings, a proposed research pyramid not necessarily emphasizing the randomized controlled trial, a conceptual framework more relevant to the clinical and research needs of rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy, the role of and impact on patients within the EBM paradigm, implementation of EBM, but also the current lack of evidence for increased efficacy of patient management based on EBM. The research base used in the EBM paradigm to support clinical decision-making is still far from complete. Demonstrating scientific evidence for EBM is a difficult task. Yet the EBM movement is of great importance for rehabilitation and physiotherapy to allow for increased transparency of care. The purpose of promoting this paradigm is optimum quality of care with conservation of professional autonomy.

Opis:
This paper describes an approach for the modeling of building interiors based on a mobile device, which integrates modules for pedestrian navigation and low-cost 3D data collection. Personal navigation is realized by a foot mounted low cost MEMS IMU, while 3D data capture for subsequent indoor modeling uses a low cost range camera, which was originally developed for gaming applications. Both steps, navigation and modeling, are supported by additional information as provided from the automatic interpretation of evacuation plans. Such emergency plans are compulsory for public buildings in a number of countries. They consist of an approximate floor plan, the current position and escape routes. Additionally, semantic information like stairs, elevators or the floor number is available. After the user has captured an image of such a floor plan, this information is made explicit again by an automatic raster-to-vector-conversion. The resulting coarse indoor model then provides constraints at stairs or building walls, which restrict the potential movement of the user. This information is then used to support pedestrian navigation by eliminating drift effects of the used low-cost sensor system. The approximate indoor building model additionally provides a priori information during subsequent indoor modeling. Within this process, the low cost range camera Kinect is used for the collection of multiple 3D point clouds, which are aligned by a suitable matching step and then further analyzed to refine the coarse building model.

This paper highlights recent advances in synthesis and magnetotransport properties of magnetic Co nanoparticles. It is shown that magnetic Co nanoparticles self-assembled in nanoparticular monolayers revealing giant magnetoresistance similar to granular systems but with additional features resulting from dipolar interactions between small domains of nanoparticles. A spin-valve with one magnetic Co nanoparticular electrode is employed as a model to demonstrate that individual magnetic moments of Co nanoparticles can be coupled to a magnetic Co layer which in turn offers tailoring of the resulting giant magnetoresistance characteristics. In addition, it is demonstrated that combining a magnetic on-off ratchet with magnetic tunneling junctions integrated in the ratchet introduces a new biosensor concept enabling: (1) simultaneous transporting and separating biomolecules, (2) dynamical biomolecule detection when passing magnetic tunneling junctions in a 1D arrangement. It is projected that this biosensor concept could be applied for viruses as well as for bacteria.

The author suggests that the intellectual life of Étienne Gilson constituted a new humanism, that Gilson’s scholarly work was part of a new renaissance, that a new humanism that Gilson thought is demanded by the precarious civilizational crisis of the modern West after World Wars I and II. He also argues that, more than anything else, Gilson was a renaissance humanist scholar who consciously worked in the tradition of renaissance humanists before him, but did so to expand our understanding of the notion of “renaissance” scholarship and to create his own brand of Christian humanism to deal with problems distinctive to his age. The author shows the specificity of the Christian humanism that Gilson developed as part of his distinctive style of doing historical research and of philosophizing.
