Opis:
In this work a strip of a transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel was welded using gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and Laser CO2 welding (LBW) processes and the resultant strength and ductility of the welded joints evaluated. It was found that LBW lead to relatively high hardness in the fusion zone, FZ where the resultant microstructure was predominantly martensite. The relative volume fractions of phases developed in the welded regions were quantitatively measured using color metallography combined with X-ray diffraction analyses. It was found that the heat affected zone, HAZ developed the maximum amount of martensite (up to 32%) in the steel welded using LBW besides a mixture of bainite, retained austenite and ferrite phases. In contrast, a relatively low percent of martensite (10.8%) was found in the HAZ when the GMAW process was implemented.
Pas ze stali typu TRIP poddano spawaniu elektrodą topliwą oraz spawaniu laserowemu i oceniono wytrzymałość i plastyczność uzyskanych połączeń spawanych. Stwierdzono, że spawanie laserowe prowadzi do uzyskania stosunkowo wysokiej twardości w strefie łączenia, gdzie powstała mikrostrukturę stanowi głównie martenzyt. Względne udziały objętościowe faz w spawanych obszarach zmierzono ilościowo za pomocą barwnej metalografii w połączeniu z dyfrakcyjną analizą rentgenowską. Stwierdzono, że w przypadku stali spawanej laserowo strefa wpływu ciepła zawiera najwięcej martenzytu (do 32%), a oprócz tego mieszanine bainitu, resztkowego austenitu i ferrytu. Natomiast w strefie wpływu ciepła uzyskanej podczas spawania elektrodą topliwą stwierdzono stosunkowo niską zawartość martenzytu (10,8%).

Opis:
Here we use synchrotron tomography to characterise dental vasculature in the oldest known tooth-bearing sharks, Leonodus carlsi Mader, 1986 and Celtiberina maderi Wang, 1993. Three dimensional reconstruction of the vascular system and microstructure of both taxa revealed a complex and dense network of canals, including horizontal, ascending and secondary bifurcated canals, as well as histological features consistent with an osteodont histotype. However, L. carlsi and C. maderi also exhibit significant morphological differences, showing Leonodus a typical diplodont tooth morphology with a linguo-labially elongated base, that contrast with Celtiberina’s teeth that show a single conical cusp curved lingually with a week developed flat base mesio-distally extended, perhaps reflecting distant relationship. These data are compatible with a pre-Devonian diversification of the two main tooth types traditionally recognised in Palaeozoic sharks (i.e., “cladodont” vs “diplodont”). Finally, our data demonstrate that existing dental classification schemes based on styles of vascularisation are over-simplified, especially when Palaeozoic taxa are considered.

Objectives Shoulder pain associated with upper limb musculoskeletal disorders is an important health problem in clinical practice due to its high prevalence, frequent consultations in primary healthcare and occupational health. Preventive strategies, including information disseminated among workers, can be useful. The aim of this study is to analyze the associations between non-traumatic osteomuscular diseases of the shoulder and the workers’ knowledge of the risks at the workplace and preventive measures developed there, as well as the association with ergonomic requirements. Material and Methods An observational case-control study was carried out on an occupationally active population assisted during 1 year in 1 healthcare center, involving 690 participants. Data were collected through a questionnaire including sociodemographic variables, the workplace, the knowledge of prevention and ergonomic requirements. The independent effect of the variables associated with non-traumatic shoulder pathology was explored through logistic regression. Results In total, 66.7% of the participants stated that they had been informed of the occupational hazards related to their jobs. The following variables were associated with a lower probability of shoulder injuries: male gender, working hours > 9 h/day or > 40 h/week, as well as having information on the risks associated with the workplace, using personal protective equipment, the existence of an occupational risks prevention service and/or risk assessment, the knowledge of the prevention plan, periodic medical examinations, and using one arm or physical force at work. A multivariate analysis revealed that the risk increased with age and lower educational levels, forced postures, repeated gestures, monotony and temporary absences from work. Furthermore, being informed of workplace risks, and using a single arm as well as physical force were shown as independent protective factors. Conclusions Information on both the ergonomic requirements and how to prevent occupational risks is a useful tool for the prevention of non-traumatic shoulder diseases. Preventive policies including health education interventions in the workplace could benefit other developed preventive activities. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(6):825–40

Opis:
A water-soluble anion containing selenium, selenocyanate (SeCN-), is produced in various industrial settings including petrochemical refining and mining wastewaters and is difficult to remove using common chemical or physical processes. The work described was aimed at determining the relative acute toxicity of SeCNby evaluating its minimal inhibitory and minimal bactericidal concentrations for 1) a bacterium (LHVE) that produces volatile selenium-containing derivatives in cultures containing added SeCNand 2) for a sensitive E. coli wild-type strain. These measures of toxicity were compared to those of selenate and selenite, the oxyanions of selenium commonly found in the environment. Cultures of LHVE amended with SeCNon agar plates produced red, elemental selenium after three days. As far as we know this is the first evidence for the biological production of elemental Se by a metalloid-resistant bacterium exposed to selenocyanate. Bioprocessing of selenite and SeCNby both types of bacteria, as analyzed by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry, demonstrated that LHVE more successfully incorporates or precipitates Se compared to E. coli.

Opis:
Caviidae is one of the groups of rodents with the greatest ecomorphological disparity, and with currently three known lineages: Caviinae (cuises), Dolichotinae (maras), and Hydrochoerinae (capybaras). Caviinae include small caviids represented by three extant genera (Microcavia, Cavia, and Galea) and three fossils forms (Dolicavia, Palaeocavia, and Neocavia). In Argentina, the fossil record of Caviinae is continuous and abundant since the late Miocene. Neocavia, specifically, is represented by different species recorded in the late Miocene–Pliocene. Here, we describe a new species of Neocavia from the late Miocene–early Pliocene of the Cerro Azul Formation (La Pampa Province, Argentina), and provide a re-description of already known species (Neocavia lozanoi and “Neocavia depressidens”). Also, we perform a more comprehensive review of the genus and include the Neocavia species in a phylogenetic context within Caviinae. We analyze the main patterns of the evolution of the tympanic bullae within Caviidae, and infer about a possible occasional fossorial habit of Neocavia. The morphological and phylogenetic analyses indicate that Neocavia is more closely related to Dolicavia and Microcavia than to the other Caviinae, and confirm the monophyly of the genus, with at least two clearly differentiable species. Since this study cannot confirm the systematic position and validity of “N. depressidens”, we suggest not to use this taxon as a biostratigraphic indicator.

The black sands found on certain Ecuadorian beaches present a high ilmenite contents up to 50%. In this work, TiO2 was obtained from the black sands of Muisne beaches – Ecuador by combining the thermal, chemical and ion exchange treatments. For the thermal treatment, the raw material was smelted at temperature of 1100 °C using a basic flux. Subsequently, the chemical treatment was initiated in the presence of Fe0 metal using chemical digestion with HCl, and the sample was purified by separating the precipitates from a series of reactions developed at different pHs with NH4OH, Na2S and HCl. The final effluent resulting from the last HCl digestion was purified by ion exchange using Amberlite IRA 400 resin of strongly anionic character. The effluent is then treated in basic medium and the resulting precipitate is calcined. The recovery yield of the TiO2 pigment was 46% with 92% purity.

Opis:
Some recent accident reports involving large vessels in mooring operations or breaking away from their moorings conclude that brakes of mooring winches do not render before line parts. As the potential loss of life is high, the utmost attention on-board must be paid to minimise this inherent risk. When the load on the mooring lines becomes overloaded beyond the pre-set levels, mooring winches band brakes have the safety function of rendering and allowing the line to shed this load before its potential breaking and the subsequent snap-back. As a preventive measure against breaking, the pre-set level, known as Brake Holding Capacity (BHC), must be below the Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) of the line. In this paper, the authors analyse concerns that can arise from those with conventional screw manually-applied band brakes regarding their BHC reliability. Thus, in order to improve safety, the advantages of the spring-applied band brakes with manual setting and release or with hydraulic release are highlighted. Finally, the paper shows a typical procedure using a hydraulic jack for brake testing the winch of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) ship to fix their BHC in order to hold 60% of the MBL of the mooring line.

We present the life distribution of a device subject to shocks governed by phase-type distributions. The probability of failures after shock follows discrete phase-type distribution. Lifetimes between shocks are affected by the number of cumulated shocks and they follow continuous phase-type distributions. The device can support a maximum of N shocks. We calculate the distribution of the lifetime of the device and illustrate the calculations by means of a numerical application. Computational aspects are introduced. This model extends other previously considered in the literature.
