Opis:
A different perspective from the more “traditional” approaches to studying solutions of games in partition function form has been presented. We provide a decomposition of the space of such games under the action of the symmetric group, for the cases with three and four players. In particular, we identify all the irreducible subspaces that are relevant to the study of linear symmetric solutions. We then use such a decomposition to derive a characterization of the class of linear and symmetric solutions, as well as of the class of linear, symmetric and efficient solutions.

Opis:
The Mediterranean Sea has seen an increase of ports hosting cruise ships during the first fifteen years of the 21st century. The increase in cruise ship presence in Mediterranean ports is associated with the dynamism of cruise traffic in recent years, with an average annual growth of 7.45% for cruise passengers worldwide during the period of 1990-2015. Cruise traffic is a maritime business that is primarily composed of two elements, maritime affairs and tourism. This article focuses on the maritime component. With the growth of the cruise industry, cruise lines have been forced to seek new ports to meet demand in an attempt to create differentiated products based on the ports that compose the itinerary. The itinerary system of cruise traffic makes the cruise ports depend on one another to design an itinerary. This feature results in both complex geographic relationships in the design of a cruise itinerary and complex competitive/cooperative relationships between ports. The aim of this article is to present the hierarchic picture of a sample of 29 cruise ports in the Western Mediterranean region during the period of 2000-2015. To achieve this goal, a port size classification is proposed and a shift-share analysis at the inter- and intra-group size level is applied. Moreover, concentration measures are used to determine the changes in the levels of market concentration. Furthermore, a dynamic model is proposed to determine the competitive or cooperative relationships between cruise ports. The proposed model is applied to the largest ports with data from the 2001-2015 period.

Opis:
In transport and, particularly in the case of the present study, naval industries, one of the major objectives of research on wear and friction is focused principally on solid lubrication. In the following paper, the tribological behaviors of two well-known, different cast irons, lamellar grey iron (EN-GJL-250) and spheroidal graphite ductile iron (EN-GJS-400), are compared and the results are analyzed. For each material's family, the surfaces’ properties are characterized at different stages of the machining process. The particular influence of diverse feed rates in a turning facing is evaluated. Moreover, some tests of the laser cladding process, which contribute to the improvement of superficial properties, are carried out; therefore, the initial morphology before surface treatment is carefully characterized and evaluated in the context of subsequent adhesion qualification. The final goal of the study is to deliver feasible initial information concerning two similar cast irons that are traditionally used in the naval industry, which would be manufactured and employed in the future as dry lubricated bearings

We applied positron annihilation spectroscopy to study the effect of growth polarity on the vacancy defects in ZnO grown by metal-organic vapor phase deposition on sapphire. Both c-plane and a-plane ZnO layers were measured, and Zn vacancies were identified as the dominant defects detected by positrons. The results are qualitatively similar to those of earlier experiments in GaN. The Zn vacancy concentration decreases in c-plane ZnO by almost one order of magnitude (from high $10^{17} cm^{-3}$ to low $10^{17} cm^{-3}$) when the layer thickness is increased from 0.5 to 2 μm. Interestingly, in a-plane ZnO the Zn vacancy concentration is constant at a level of about $2×10^{17} cm^{-3}$ in all the samples with thicknesses varying from 0.6 to 2.4 μm. The anisotropy of the Doppler broadening of the annihilation radiation parallel and perpendicular to the hexagonal c-axis was also measured.

Important environmental and radiological applications require energy deposition models including the interactions between the secondary electrons and the atoms or molecules of the medium. In this work we propose a method to obtain reliable cross-section data to be used in these models by combining total and ionisation cross-section measurements with simple calculations of the differential and integral elastic cross sections. The energy loss spectra obtained in this experiment have been also used to derive the stopping power of the considered materials for electrons. Some examples of results for atomic (Xe) and molecular (CF4) targets are presented and discussed in this paper.

Opis:
Lorentz invariance of Maxwell electromagnetic equations is demonstrated in two complementary ways: first, we give a pedestrian review with three-vector equations, and we then express Maxwell equations in a four-vector matrix form (the Maxwell-Lorentz matrix) which demonstrates the intimate connection of Maxwell equations with the Lorentz group. Each Maxwell-Lorentz matrix component is the product of three matrices: a derivative matrix, a 4x4 Lorentz group generator matrix, and an electromagnetic field matrix. We obtain rotary Lorentz transformations of the electromagnetic field matrix from Lorentz equation matrices. We then transform the derivative and electromagnetic matrices and obtain an explicit matrix demonstration of Lorentz invariance of Maxwell equations. To obtain this result, we express all transformation matrices in exponential form to facilitate the application of simple Lorentz group algebra. The pedestrian approach illustrates what the Lorentz group matrix approach actually accomplishes and helps one to gain some appreciation of group theory methods.

Opis:
A Research Object (RO) is defined as a semantically rich aggregation of resources that bundles together essential information relating to experiments and investigations. This information is not limited merely to the data used and the methods employed to produce and analyze such data, but it may also include the people involved in the investigation as well as other important metadata that describe the characteristics, inter-dependencies, context and dynamics of the aggregated resources. As such, a research object can encapsulate scientific knowledge and provide a mechanism for sharing and discovering assets of reusable research and scientific knowledge within and across relevant communities, and in a way that supports reliability and reproducibility of investigation results. While there are no pre-defined constraints related to the type of resources a research object can contain, the following usually apply in the context of scientific research: data used and results produced; methods employed to produce and analyze data; scientific workflows implementing such methods; provenance and settings; people involved in the investigation; annotations about these resources, which are essential to the understanding and interpretation of the scientific outcomes captured by a research object. The example research object contains a workflow, input data and results, along with a paper that presents the results and links to the investigators responsible. Annotations on each of the resources (and on the research object itself) provide additional information and characterize, e.g. the provenance of the results. Therefore, exploitation of the RO model should be considered as a way to provide additional reliability and reproducibility of the research. The concept of the RO was introduced to the environment created in the EVER-EST project in the form of Virtual Research Environment (VRE). a group of Earth Scientists, who are observing, analyzing and modeling processes that take place on land and see, was examined against their needs and expectations about the possible improvements in their scientific work. The results show that scientist expectations are focused on knowledge sharing and reuse, and new forms of scholarly communications beyond pdf articles as supporting tools of knowledge cross-fertilization between their members. The Research Object concept seems a natural answer for these needs. However, the model, in order to be sufficient and usable, must become a part of the working environment and needs to be integrated with the actual tools. Therefore, great efforts have been undertaken to create a generic, technical solution – VRE , which implements the expected functionalities. In this article we present a concept of the VRE as a tool that takes advantage of the Research Object model in order to integrate and simplify the information exchange, as well as persist, share and discover assets of the reusable research. Moreover, we are presenting example scenarios of the VRE usage in the four different Earth Science domains.

The Lanczos approach employs to ε= q_(n+1) as a new degree of freedom, thus the Euler-Lagrange equation for this new variable gives the Noether’s constant of motion. Torres del Castillo and Rubalcava-García showed that each variational symmetry implies the existence of an ignorable coordinate; here we apply the Lanczos approach to the Noether’s theorem to motivate the principal relations of these authors. The Maxwell equations without sources are invariant under duality rotations, then we show that this invariance implies, via the Noether’s theorem, the continuity equation for the electromagnetic energy. Besides, we demonstrate that if we know one solution of p(x)y''+q(x)y'+r(x)y=0, then this Lanczos technique allows obtain the other solution of this homogeneous linear differential equation.

The temperature increase associated with plastic deformation of a material under loading may be measured using several techniques such as infrared thermography (IRT). The present work investigates the temperature increase at different high strain rates and initial test temperatures, using an aluminium alloy Al 6082. A Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) was applied to induce high strain rates to the material and an infrared camera was used to measure the temperature increase. Numerical simulations of dynamic tests were performed to calculate the temperature increase and to gain a better understanding of the process by local measurements. Thus, a detailed finite-elements model was developed to simulate the dynamic compression test. The fraction of plastic work converted into heat was estimated using the Zehnder model. Numerical results in terms of the strain rate and initial temperature effect on the material temperature increase are reported and compared with experiments.

In this work we present the design and the manufacturing processes, as well as the acoustics standard- ization tests, of an acoustic barrier formed by a set of multi-phenomena cylindrical scatterers. Periodic arrangements of acoustic scatterers embedded in a fluid medium with different physical properties are usually called Sonic Crystals. The multiple scattering of waves inside these structures leads to attenuation bands related to the periodicity of the structure by means of Bragg scattering. In order to design the acoustic barrier, two strategies have been used: First, the arrangement of scatterers is based on fractal geometries to maximize the Bragg scattering; second, multi-phenomena scatterers with several noise con- trol mechanisms, as resonances or absorption, are designed and used to construct the periodic array. The acoustic barrier reported in this work provides a high technological solution in the field of noise control.

The Colombian government introduced a capacity market in order to promote the diversification in the energy matrix and protect users from high prices derived from dry seasonal events. Unfortunately, the flaws in the scarcity price definition- a mechanism that activates the capacity market obligation and sets a cap price for the spot market- have led into a market failure. Specifically, some generation plants have been forced to be unavailable because their variable costs are significantly higher than the scarcity price. This paper presents a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the Colombian Electricity system, with a particular emphasis on the definition of the scarcity price. Results present lessons and recommendations for policy makers based on the experience of the Colombian Electricity Market, highlighting the need of a new definition of the scarcity price and a different focus on the energy planning scheme.

Opis:
Some recent accident reports involving large vessels in mooring operations or breaking away from their moorings conclude that brakes of mooring winches do not render before line parts. As the potential loss of life is high, the utmost attention on-board must be paid to minimise this inherent risk. When the load on the mooring lines becomes overloaded beyond the pre-set levels, mooring winches band brakes have the safety function of rendering and allowing the line to shed this load before its potential breaking and the subsequent snap-back. As a preventive measure against breaking, the pre-set level, known as Brake Holding Capacity (BHC), must be below the Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) of the line. In this paper, the authors analyse concerns that can arise from those with conventional screw manually-applied band brakes regarding their BHC reliability. Thus, in order to improve safety, the advantages of the spring-applied band brakes with manual setting and release or with hydraulic release are highlighted. Finally, the paper shows a typical procedure using a hydraulic jack for brake testing the winch of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) ship to fix their BHC in order to hold 60% of the MBL of the mooring line.
