This article is the first of two papers on the remote sensing methods of monitoring the Baltic ecosystem, developed by our team. Earlier, we had produced a series of detailed mathematical models and statistical regularities describing the transport of solar radiation in the atmosphere-sea system, the absorption of this radiation in the water and its utilisation in a variety of processes, most importantly in the photosynthesis occurring in phytoplankton cells, as a source of energy for the functioning of marine ecosystems. The comprehensive DESAMBEM algorithm, presented in this paper, is a synthesis of these models and regularities. This algorithm enables the abiotic properties of the environment as well as the state and the functioning of the Baltic ecosystem to be assessed on the basis of available satellite data. It can be used to determine a good number of these properties: the sea surface temperature, the natural irradiance of the sea surface, the spectral and spatial distributions of solar radiation energy in the water, the surface concentrations and vertical distributions of chlorophyll a and other phytoplankton pigments in this sea, the radiation energy absorbed by phytoplankton, the quantum efficiency of photosynthesis and the primary production of organic matter. On the basis of these directly determined properties, other characteristics of processes taking place in the Baltic ecosystem can be estimated indirectly. Part 1 of this series of articles deals with the detailed mathematical apparatus of the DESAMBEM algorithm. Part 2 will discuss its practical applicability in the satellite monitoring of the sea and will provide an assessment of the accuracy of such remote sensing methods in the monitoring of the Baltic ecosystem (see Darecki et al. 2008 – this issue).

This paper is the second of two articles on the methodology of the remote sensing of the Baltic ecosystem. In Part 1 the authors presented the set of DESAMBEM algorithms for determining the major parameters of this ecosystem on the basis of satellite data (see Woźniak et al. 2008 – this issue). That article discussed in detail the mathematical apparatus of the algorithms. Part 2 presents the effects of the practical application of the algorithms and their validation, the latter based on satellite maps of selected Baltic ecosystem parameters: the distributions of the sea surface temperature (SST), the Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) at the sea surface, the surface concentrations of chlorophyll a and the total primary production of organic matter. Particular emphasis was laid on analysing the precision of estimates of these and other parameters of the Baltic ecosystem, determined by remote sensing methods. The errors in these estimates turned out to be relatively small; hence, the set of DESAMBEM algorithms should in the future be utilised as the foundation for the effective satellite monitoring of the state and functioning of the Baltic ecosystem.

Purpose: Depressive disorders and obesity belong to the most frequently occurring diseases. Improper nutritional behaviours are observed in patients suffering from recurring depressive disorders. We have undertaken research aimed at comparing the body weight composition and the content of selected nutrients in the food intake of patients with diagnosed depressive disorders. Materials and methods: 131 patients (76 women and 55 men) suffering from depressive episode took part in the study. The patients had their body composition analysed using electrical bioimpedance measured by a MALTRON BioScan 920-2 device. The assessment of the diet was conducted using a 24-hour interview concerning the day preceding the examination. Results: Male with diagnosed depression and obesity were more often married or had lower level of education as compared to male with the normal body weight. Obese female with diagnosed depression had more episodes of the disease and were older as compared to female with the normal body weight. Both obese male and female were characterised by a higher percentage content of visceral adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue and a higher VAT (visceral adipose tissue)/SAT (subcutaneous adipose tissue) ratio as well as a lower content of fat-free body mass. Conclusions: Patients with diagnosed depression, with the normal body weight and obesity, were characterised by an inappropriate supply of proteins, carbohydrates, total fats, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and dietary fibre.

W laboratoriach Państwowego Zakładu Higieny wykonujących badania dla klientów zawsze przestrzegano zasad dobrej praktyki laboratoryjnej i dbano o rzetelność wyników badań. W 2003 r. laboratoria wykonujące badania z zakresu bezpieczeństwa żywności powołano do roli krajowych laboratoriów referencyjnych. To, oraz konieczność dostosowania standardów pracy do wymagań ustawodawstwa WE oraz potwierdzenia posiadanych kompetencji przez niezależną organizację doprowadziło w 2003 r. do podjęcia decyzji o ubieganiu się o akredytację Polskiego Centrum Akredytacji. Przedstawiono następujące etapy budowy i wdrażania systemu zarządzania: szkolenia, modyfikacja struktury organizacyjnej Instytutu, opracowanie dokumentacji systemu zarządzania, remonty, wdrożeniu nadzoru nad wyposażeniem pomiarowym i badawczym, audity wewnętrzne oraz przegląd zarządzania. Zwrócono uwagę na przydatność wcześniejszych doświadczeń i osiągnięć w zakresie walidacji metod badawczych oraz zapewniania jakości wyników poprzez organizację i udział w badaniach biegłości. Podano aktualny stan akredytacji metod badawczych stosowanych przez laboratoria PZH wykonujące badania w zakresie chemii, mikrobiologii, radiobiologii i diagnostyki medycznej.
The rules of good laboratory practice have always been observed in the laboratories of National Institute of Hygiene (NIH) and the reliability of the results has been carefully cared after when performing tests for clients. In 2003 the laboratories performing analyses related to food safety were designated as the national reference laboratories. This, added to the necessity of compliance with work standards and requirements of EU legislation and to the need of confirmation of competence by an independent organisation, led to a decision to seek accreditation of Polish Centre of Accreditation (PCA). The following stages of building and implementation of management system were presented: training, modifications of Institute's organisational structure, elaboration of management system's documentation, renovation and refurbishment of laboratory facilities, implementation of measuring and test equipment's supervision, internal audits and management review. The importance of earlier experiences and achievements with regard to validation of analytical methods and guarding of the quality of the results through organisation and participation in proficiency tests was highlighted. Current status of accreditation of testing procedures used in NIH laboratories that perform analyses in the field of chemistry, microbiology, radiobiology and medical diagnostic tests was presented.

An optimal method for composites preparation as an input to rapid prototyping fabrication of scaffolds with potential application in osteochondral tissue engineering is still needed. Scaffolds in tissue engineering applications play a role of constructs providing appropriate mechanical support with defined porosity to assist regeneration of tissue. The aim of the presented study was to analyze the influence of composite fabrication methods on scaffolds mechanical properties. The evaluation was performed on polycaprolactone (PCL) with 5 wt% beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) scaffolds fabricated using fused deposition modeling (FDM). Three different methods of PCL-TCP composite preparation: solution casting, particles milling, extrusion and injection were used to provide material for scaffold fabrication. The obtained scaffolds were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, x-ray micro computed tomography, thermal gravimetric analysis and static material testing machine. All of the scaffolds had the same geometry (cylinder, 4×6 mm) and fiber orientation (0/60/120°). There were some differences in the TCP distribution and formation of the ceramic agglomerates in the scaffolds. They depended on fabrication method. The use of composites prepared by solution casting method resulted in scaffolds with the best combination of compressive strength (5.7±0.2 MPa) and porosity (48.5±2.7 %), both within the range of trabecular bone.

Opis:
Using laboratory cultures of algae and natural phytoplankton populations from Nhatrang Bay (South China Sea), the relationship between the chlorophyll fluorescence F0, the chlorophyll a concentration Ca and light absorption capacities of algae cells was studied. It is shown that the ratio F0/Ca depends mainly on the species composition of the algae population; hence, the concentration Ca can be measured with the fluorescence method with acceptable accuracy only when the species composition of algae populations varies over a rather narrow range. The fluorescence F0 can, however, be a good index of the total absorption capacities of different phytoplankton species, because the intensity of F0 depends on the sum total of light absorbed by all photosynthetic pigments in a plant cell. Thus, the fluorescence F0 measures not only the concentration of chlorophyll a, but that of all photosynthetic pigment concentrations.

Statistical relationships between the quantum yield of photosynthesis and selected environmental factors in the ocean have been studied. The underwater irradiance, nutrient content, water temperature and water trophicity (i.e. the surface concentration of chlorophyll Ca(0)) have been considered, utilizing a large empirical data base. On the basis of these relationships, a mathematical model of the quantum yield was worked out in which the quantum yield Φ is expressed as a product of the theoretical maximum quantum yield ΦMAX = 0.125 atomC quanta−1 and six dimensionless factors. Each of these factors fi appears to be, to a sufficiently good approximation, dependent on one or two environmental factors and optical depth at most. The model makes it possible to determine the quantum yield from known values of these environmental factors. Empirical verification of the model yielded a positive result – the statistical error of the approximate values of the quantum yield Φ is 42%.

Background. The preschool period is a time of intensive changes: physical, motoric, cognitive, emotional and social development of the child. The diet should provide optimal energy andnutrient levels. Due to their properties, some of the dietary components may be particularly important in child development procesess. These include omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, vitamin D, antioxidants, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected dietary components, the nutritional status and sleep duration in children at pre-school ages (3-6-years old) on their emotional sphere, as well as the cognitive, physical and social development. Material and methods. Anonymous research was carried out among 75 randomly selected children aged 3-6 years old in the Municipal Kindergarten in Ruciane-Nida. Research methods consited of a questionnaire, a 3-day food record, growth charts, and standardized development observation sheets. Software used for evaluation and analysis of obtained results was Diet 5.0. and Statistica 13. Results. It was observed that the increase of the BMI percentile correlated with a lesser social development of children. Children who slept a recommended number of hours presented higher level of cognitive developmnent. High level of cognitive development was more common in children supplementing vitamin D. Higher intake of folates, vitamin D, vitamin E, magnesium, zinc and copper correlated positively with a higher level of cognitive development. Conclusions. Application of the proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle principles supports a proper child development. All dietary components should be balanced, however some nutrients are of especial significance during the childhood development and therefore their optimal intake is essential for this developmental period.

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of internal architecture of 3D printed scaffolds on their mechanical properties. The polycaprolactone scaffolds with six different internal architectures fabricated by rapid prototyping method were tested in this study. The scaffolds were plotted using a 330 μm dispensing needle, layer by layer with lay-down pattern of the fibers: 00/150/300; 00/300/600; 00/450/900, 00/600/1200, 00/750/1500 and 00/900/1800. Morphological analyses and mechanical properties examinations were performed. The obtained scaffolds had structures with high open porosity (50-60%) and interconnected pores ranging from 380 to 400 μm. The different lay-down pattern and the angle deposition of successive fiber layers resulted in different internal architecture and pore shape of the constructs, what was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and microtomography analyzes. The geometries 00/900/1800 and 00/600/1200 were characterized with the most regular shape of pores between all analyzed architectures. The pores for 00/150/300 and 00/300/600 were not regular and arranged as a ladder-like helicoid structures. The lay-down pattern of the fibers affected significantly the mechanical properties of the scaffolds. The Young’s modulus (E) of the scaffolds was increasing with increase of the angle deposition between successive layers. The scaffolds were also subjected to cyclic loading and again geometry and mechanical properties were under investigation. For all type of scaffolds the differences of mechanical properties after dynamic compression have been noticed. The geometries 00/900/1800 and 00/600/1200 exhibited the highest Young’s Modulus after dynamic compression according to the rest of analyzed samples. According to the conducted research there is a clear correlation between internal architecture of polymeric scaffolds and their mechanical properties.

In 2009 the Ministry of National Education introduced a new core curriculum for general education in Poland which completely transformed environmental education at ISCED 2 (Polish: gimnazjum, junior high school) and ISCED 3 (post-gimnazjum, senior high schools of different types) stages. Considering the immense impact of chemical substances on the state of global nature, the curriculum for chemistry plays a pivotal role in the development of environmental knowledge and pro-environmental attitudes among students in Polish schools. There is no doubts that not only are chemistry textbooks the basic source of scientific knowledge for students, but they also inspire teachers during class preparation. The educational reform created a need for updating chemistry textbooks according to new core curriculum. The aim of this work was to investigate the coherence between elements of environmental education required by core curriculum and the depiction of these issues proposed in textbooks. Textbooks of major Polish educational publishers for junior and senior secondary schools at basic level were analyzed. The results of this study show that all examined textbooks are coherent with environmental issues included in the program fundamentals, but they also give additional pieces of information when needed, even when such content is not precisely defined in the core curriculum (eg organic chemical waste problems). The comparison of selected textbooks provided information on the present state of education reform implementation and on what could be improved or clarified in the new core curriculum regarding environmental problems.
W 2009 roku Ministerstwo Edukacji Narodowej wprowadziło nową podstawę programową kształcenia ogólnego w Polsce, która przekształciła całkowicie edukację środowiskową na III (gimnazjum) i IV (szkoły ponadgimnazjalne) etapie kształcenia. Biorąc pod uwagę ogromny wpływ substancji chemicznych na stan środowiska naturalnego, podstawa programowa przedmiotu chemia pełni istotną rolę w rozwijaniu wiedzy środowiskowej oraz postaw prośrodowiskowych wśród uczniów polskich szkół. Bez wątpienia, podręczniki chemiczne są nie tylko podstawowym źródłem wiedzy naukowej dla uczniów, ale także inspiracją dla nauczycieli przygotowujących zajęcia lekcyjne. Reforma edukacyjna narzuciła konieczność zaktualizowania podręczników do nauki chemii zgodnie z nową podstawą programową. Celem niniejszej pracy było zbadanie spójności elementów edukacji prośrodowiskowej wymaganych w nowej podstawie programowej z omówieniem tych zagadnień zaproponowanym w wybranych podręcznikach. Analizie poddano podręczniki dla szkół gimnazjalnych i ponadgimnazjalnych (zakres podstawowy) wydane przez największe polskie wydawnictwa edukacyjne. Wyniki tego badania wskazują, że wszystkie analizowane podręczniki są zgodne z treściami kształcenia prośrodowiskowego zawartymi w podstawie programowej, a jeśli to konieczne, zawierają także dodatkowe wiadomości nieujęte podstawą programową (np. problemy z odpadami związków organicznych). Porównanie M. Musialik, M.M. Chrzanowski, I. Buczek, E.B. Arèvalo-Garcia and B. Ostrowska 142 wybranych podręczników dostarczyło informacji o stanie obecnym wdrażania reformy edukacyjnej oraz o elementach nowej podstawy programowej dotyczących problemów środowiskowych, które warto poprawić lub uściślić.

Opis:
Fabrication of scaffolds for tissue engineering (TE) applications becomes a very important research topic in present days. The aim of the study was to create and evaluate a hybrid polymeric 3D scaffold consisted of nano and microfibers, which could be used for bone tissue engineering. Hybrid structures were fabricated using rapid prototyping (RP) and electrospinning (ES) methods. Electrospun nanofibrous mats were incorporated between the microfibrous layers produced by RP technology. The nanofibers were made of poly(L-lactid) and polycaprolactone was used to fabricate microfibers. The micro- and nanostructures of the hybrid scaffolds were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray microtomographical (μCT) analysis and the mechanical testing of the porous hybrid structures were performed using SkyScan 1172 machine, equipped with a material testing stage. The scanning electron microscopy and micro-tomography analyses showed that obtained scaffolds are hybrid nanofibers/microfibers structures with high porosity and interconnected pores ranging from 10 to 500um. Although, connection between microfibrous layers and electrospun mats remained consistent under compression tests, addition of the nanofibrous mats affected the mechanical properties of the scaffold, particularly its elastic modulus. The results of the biocompatibility tests didn’t show any cytotoxic effects and no fibroblast after contact with the scaffold showed any damage of the cell body, the cells had proper morphologies and showed good proliferation. Summarizing, using RP technology and electrospinning method it is possible to fabricate biocompatible scaffolds with controllable geometrical parameters and good mechanical properties.

The aim of this work was to assess the effect of non-photosynthetic (photoprotecting) pigments on the measured quantum yield of photosynthesis in the sea. The energy absorbed by these pigments is not utilised during photosynthesis. As a result, the measured yield of this process, i.e. the photosynthetic yield referred to the total energy absorbed by all phytoplankton pigments, is less than the actual quantum yield of photosynthesis, i.e. the yield referred to the energy absorbed by photosynthetic pigments only. The model of the absorption properties of marine phytoplankton derived by the authors (see Woźniak et al. 2000, this volume) was employed to determine the relevant contributions of photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic pigments to the total energy absorbed by phytoplankton in different trophic types of seas and at different depths in the water column. On this basis the non-photosynthetic pigment absorption factor fa, which describes the relation between the true and measured quantum yields of photosynthesis, could be characterised. The analysis shows that fa varies in value from 0.33 to 1, and that it depends on the trophic type of sea and the depth in the water column. The values of this factor are usually highest in eutrophic waters and decrease as waters become progressively more oligotrophic. It is also characteristic of fa that it increases with increasing depth in the sea.

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of internal architecture of 3D printed scaffolds on their mechanical properties. The polycaprolactone scaffolds with four different geometries produced by rapid prototyping were tested in this study. The 3D samples were manufactured with different internal architecture. The scaffolds were plotted using a 330 ym dispensing needle, layer by layer with lay-down pattern of the fibers: 00/450/900, 0P/60°/120°, 00/900/1800 and 00/600/1200 with shifted layers. Scanning electron mic¬roscopy analyses and mechanical properties examinations were performed. The mechanical test showed that the highest Young's modulus was obtained for the samples with 0P/6CP/12CP lay-down pattern, especially after layers shifting. The SEM analyzes didn't show any defects or layers delamination in the scaffolds. All the samples were characterized by appropriate 3D architecture and good layers connections. The obtained results confirmed the hypothesis that scaffolds with 00/60°/120l0 lay-down pattern of the fibers and with shifted layers have the highest mechanically properties of the investigated samples and therefore, show high potential to be used in bone tissue engineering application.
