The article analyses adjectives excerpted from a dictionary entitled Senses, Emotions and Adjectives of the Russian Language and evaluated by respondents as causing very unpleasant emotions (marked in the dictionary with three minuses). An attempt was made to delineate the emotive component of their meaning on the basis of data from dictionaries providing explanations, as well as those presenting associations, accompanied by contexts of their usage traced in the corpus. The data contributing to the analysis can be employed in order to reconstruct emotional images of the world and national cultural specificity of expressing emotions. Additionally, they can be used to scrutinize and shape emotional competence, while the methodology of delineating the emotive component of meaning with the use of affective expression and their associations can be employed in further research into emotive lexical items.

Images of linguistic signs which originate as part of the linguistic awareness of representatives of various cultures and languages can differ considerably. There are many ways of distinguishing these differences, including semantic analysis and analysis of the connotations related to a given word. This article presents how the term holiday functions in the linguistic awareness of Poles and Russians.

This article presents a new type of dictionary – a linguistic-psychological dictionary reflecting structures of language, similar to dictionaries based on associations, but also reconstructing the mental and emotional states of an average user of the Russian language. It was compiled as a result of analyzing 15918 Russian adjectives from the perspective of their relationship with emotions originating in reference to various senses. The dictionary contains information on “the emotional load” of these adjectives, that is how pleasant or how unpleasant emotions a given adjective evokes. The analyzed lexemes were assessed by respondents on the scale of emotions: slightly (un)pleasant – moderately (un)pleasant – very (un)pleasant, which was marked with an appropriate number of pluses or minuses. It cannot be overestimated how useful such a dictionary and the information it contains are. Although it is believed that representatives of different cultures experience universal emotions, their quality and intensity hidden behind particular linguistic units can diverge between different cultural-linguistic communities. Emotions are conditioned socially, culturally, and historically; they play an important role in international communication. Thus when they are incompetently and mistakenly interpreted, this can disturb dialogue between various cultures and even lead to conflicts. In the article, considering equivalents cygarowy/сигарный, differences in the evaluation of these adjectives in Polish and Russian are presented, illustrating the need to look for emotionally adequate translation equivalents when rendering them.

This article presents linguo-culturological commentary based on Vorobyev’s semiotic description model of linguo-culturological objects. The commentary explains the notion of Cheburashka linguocultureme. An appropriate choice of texts for each fragment of the commentary allowed us to discover multi-plane semantics of the linguo-cultureme and its function in the modern Russian culture and language. Linguo-culturological commentary seems to be the best tool to explain phenomena characteristic for one culture to the representatives of other cultures.

In the Old Believers’ monastery in Wojnowo a few primers survived – the remains of the school which was conducted by the nuns in the 19th and 20th century. A comparative analysis of the copies and some loose sheets which are left has shown that there are four different editions which were printed in at least two printing houses. The analysed copies are identical reprints of the earlier first edition and constitute part of an Old Russian tradition of learning to read and write which was started by Ivan Fiodorov in 1574 and continued by Jakov Zeleznikov and the Old-Ritualists printing house in Moscow.

At the beginning of the 21st century Old Believers use old primers which were published and used at the beginning of the previous century. The paper presents the primers used in the past as well as currently by members of the Old Believers’ community in Mazury. No new editions of primers have been found either in private collections or in the former monastery in Wojnowo. This is caused by the fact that the community consists of elderly people and no publications have been issued. Old Believers’ publishing houses publish reprints of traditional primers which appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. The only primer which includes innovative elements was published in 1934 and reprinted in many copies in 1993 and 1995 in Riga.

Pleonasms and tautologies constitute a distinguishing feature of Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną. This type of repetitions functions as linguistic jokes and describes characters of the novel. The translator into Russian followed various strategies when dealing with pleonasms and tautologies. However, only some of them maintained their pleonastic character, while others were ‘corrected’ in line with the rules of modern Russian. The overtone of some elements was neutralised, yet the translator strengthened some pleonasms, duplicating the repetitious elements. It can be said that lack of consistency when translating pleonasms and tautologies shows that the translator did not understand their role in Masłowska’s text. Despite the translator’s declarations that she aimed at keeping the novel’s linguistic humour, in a number of instances it has been lost.

The library collection of the monastery in Wojnowo includes books which were used during funeral ceremonies and prayers for the dead. These texts registered non-verbal activities which accompanied prayers and which can be categorised as non-verbal rituals. The author managed to trace rituals which are repeated in different texts, thus they can be seen as characteristic of funeral ceremonies. There are two kinds of rituals described: either of prescriptive or prohibitive nature.

W artykule zaprezentowano podręcznik, który może być wykorzystany na zajęciach z geografii Rosji, realioznawstwa, lingworealioznawstwa oraz praktycznego nauczania języka rosyjskiego. Bazą tekstową i treściową podręcznika stał się cykl filmów animowanych Multirussia, prezentujących w ciągu jednej minuty jedną jednostkę administracyjną Rosyjskiej Federacji. Dobór treści został dokonany przez użytkowników języka rosyjskiego. W artykule wyodrębniono elementy kultury rozumiane jako wartości, rezultaty ludzkiej działalności i opis instytucji kultury.
The article presents a handbook which may be used to teach about Russian geography, everyday reality, liguocultural studies, as well as practical language skills. The content of the handbook is based on animated films from the Multirussia series, each presenting one administrative unit of the Russian Federation in the time of one minute. The choice of content elements was made by the native speakers of Russian. The article focuses on the elements of culture understood as values, results of human activity and descriptions of cultural institutions.

The article presents the issue of non-verbal communication from the perspective of translation and teaching a foreign language. The research is based on an experiment conducted among Russian students at the University of Warmia and Mazury, whose task it was to analyze data from Krystyna Jarząbek’s Dictionary of the Body Language of Polish People, from which about 30 unknown or unintelligible units of non-verbal communication were selected. The data show that body language, including gestures, is culture-rooted, and confirm that non-verbal means play a significant role in communication. This is why the author of the article believes it to be justified to introduce elements of non-verbal communication into teaching foreign languages and to compile bilingual dictionaries of body language.

When teaching Russian as a foreign language, it is essential to refer to linguoculturologic alaspects of words which refer to culture. The presented description of BEAR - a linguoculturologicalobject - in syntactic and pragmatic perspective is an example of such a word. The description helped Polish students to get acquainted with linguistic signs relating to the object which had been unknown to them before. The description was based on a selection of texts with numerous cultural references, such as fables, riddles, proverbs, phraseological expressions, poems, and prosaic literarytexts. Classes conducted in line with the methodology of applied linguoculturology were aimedat developing students’ linguoculturological competence.

Taronyms in linguistic humour in Dorota Masłowska’s Snow white and Russian red and their translation into RussianErroneous mixing of linguistic units is one of the most common departures from the norm in novels. This linguistic device has two functions: 1) it presents the characters in the novel, 2) it constitutes a great source of puns and linguistic humour. Such misused words are known as taronyms. This paper presents their use in Dorota Masłowska’s Snow white and Russian red (Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną) with reference to adverbs. The taronyms were identified among paronyms, synonyms, antonyms and adverbs from the same thematic group. Next, it was analyzed if and how this taronymy was reflected in the Russian translation of the presented novel. Taronimy w komizmie językowym w Wojnie polsko-ruskiej pod flagą biało-czerwoną Doroty Masłowskiej i ich przekład na język rosyjskiJednym z powszechnie stosowanych odstępstw od normy w powieści jest mylne użycie wyrazów. Ten zabieg pełni dwie funkcje: 1) jest charakterystyką bohaterów, 2) jest świetnym źródłem gier słownych i środkiem tworzenia komizmu językowego. Wyrazy mylone to taronimy. W niniejszym artykule przedstawione zostało użycie taronimów w Wojnie polsko-ruskiej w obrębie przysłówków. Wyodrębniono stosunki taronimiczne wśród paronimów, synonimów, antonimów i przysłówków z tej samej grupy tematycznej. Następnie przeanalizowano, czy i jak zjawisko taronimii jest odzwierciedlone w tłumaczeniu powieści na język rosyjski.

The XXI century witnesses the origination of various projects whose objective is to take into consideration the dialogue among cultures in the information-communication space. One can see an example of such project in the series of social commercials made in the form of animated films promoting the multifarious culture of Russia and praising the diversity of its every region. The project is entitled Multi-Rossija. The films constitute ideal material to shape the linguistic competence of students and obliterate barriers in intercultural communication during Russian language lessons on the basis of the dialogue of cultures.

The paper presents an analysis of Polish equivalents of the Russian proper name Kolobok. Their diversity results from insufficient familiarity with the Russian source text (a folk fairy tale) in Poland, which is caused by little acquaintance with the hero of the story and lack of a Polish equivalent of such a fairy tale character that carries the same communicative value. Examples in-cluded in the paper do not always preserve the communicative value of the context: in few cases, it had been assessed which elements of the meaning are relevant and significant, and which are redundant, i.e. semantically irrelevant. Provisional equivalents in most cases are based on the inner semantics of the discussed proper name.

A person who learns a foreign language should get acquainted with associations of the studied words since they belong to the (passive or active) lexicon of the representatives of the culture of the studied language. Word associations which are stored in the memory (consciousness) of every representative of any language and culture are registered in the dictionary of associations as an associative norm. Learners of Russian are able to get to know such associations through mini-texts appropriately chosen by their teachers (poems, songs, riddles, fixed expressions, proverbs). Such texts constitute a linguistic-culturological commentary which allows learners to “immerse” themselves in the Russian reality and culture, which is the main assumption of any teacher of Russian as a foreign language who adheres to the trend of applied linguistics and culturology. Classes when the described commentary is used help students to develop their socio-cultural competence, which in turn should prevent a cultural conflict during intercultural communication. It seems that in the next decade the attention of teacher trainers will be focused on this aspect of teaching.

The magical function, understood as all symptoms of rituality, is dichotomously realized inSinodik from Wojnowo: (1) in calls to perform the ritual of “remembering the dead”, (2) indefining rules for this ritual. Both directions are realized verbally and nonverbally. The book isboth a nonverbal call as well as a tool to perform the call. In Sinodik, verbal encouragement topray is also present. The text of Sinodik is a collection of rules and rights to perform the ritual, i.e.a verbal and nonverbal behaviour of those who pray. The nonverbal ritual is revealed also in thegraphic presentation of the book.

Opis:
In the article updating the concept of memory was analysed through its material expression in the text. The analytical material consisted of a special kind of religious literature, sinodik, which is an expression of remembrance about the dead and was used to mention them in prayers. With the application of frame analysis and statistic methods of research an artificial text was delineated, which is the main form of updating the concept of memory in the Sinodik from Wojnowo. In turn, it allowed to differentiate a new subconcept from the latter one, i.e. mentioning the dead in prayers.

The paper presents the phenomenon of extended collocations in the novel Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną by Dorota Masłowska. Innovative collocations are analysed with reference to an adverb ‘doszczętnie’ [Eng. thoroughly]. New unconventional collocations are among the factors thanks to which the language of the novel is believed to have undergone deconstruction. Unfortunately, in the Russian version of the novel the translator did not reflect the discussed phenomenon, which deprived Russian readers of part of the aesthetic linguistic experience available to Polish readers.

O MIEJSCU I CZASIE WYDANIA KSIĄG LITURGICZNYCH STAROOBRZĘDOWEGO KLASZTORU W WOJNOWIE - SYSTEM SYGNATUR I FOLIACJI Streszczenie Po śmierci ostatnich mniszek ze staroobrzędowego klasztoru w Wojnowie pojawiła się możliwość zbadania pozostałych tam utensyliów. Na szczególną uwagę zasługują księgi, które są systematycznie fotografowane i badane przez wykładowców Uniwersytetu War-mińsko-Mazurskiego. W artykule podjęto próbę określenia miejsca i przybliżonego czasu wydania czterech ksiąg. Na podstawie fałszywego sposobu podawania miejsca wydania oraz ornamentów użytych do ozdobienia księgi autorka określiła, że książki powstały w nielegalnej drukarni Grebniewa w Dziergaczach, prawdopodobnie w latach 1900–1905. W artykule scharakteryzowano inną cechę pozwalającą identyfi kować tę drukarnię - sposób numeracji arkuszy oraz kart w księgach. THE TIME AND PLACE OF PUBLICATION OLD BELIEVERS’ VOLUMES FROM WOJNOWO. THE SYSTEM OF SIGNATURES AND FOLIOING Summary When the last nuns from the Old Believers’ monastery in Wojnowo (Eckerdorf) died, there appeared an opportunity to inspect the objects remaining there. Particular attention should be paid to volumes, which are systematically photographed and analyzed by the lecturers from the University of Warmia and Mazury. This article constitutes an attempt to defi ne the place and approximate time of publication 4 volumes. On the basis of the false way of establishing the place of publication and the ornaments used to decorate the volume, the author established that the volume was published in the illegal Grebnev’s printing house in Dziergacze (Dergachi), probably between 1900 and 1905. The article characterizes also another feature identifying this printing house, namely the way of numbering folios and leaves in volumes.

The function of confessional differentiation reveals itself in juxtaposing one’s own religion with other religions as well as in unity with members of one’s own belief. The way this function took shape among Old Believers is presented on the example of Sinodik from Wojnowo. Juxtaposing is realized as an opposition against other non-Orthodox believers and supporters of Patriarch Nikon’s reforms. The feeling of unity with members of one’s own community is formed by memorizing facts (names, places and dates) of Old Believers’ martyrology, developing a sense of duty towards ancestors and paying the debt through prayers, love and respect towards them.

In the Russian linguistic image of the world the concepts of MOSCOW and THE PROVINCES constitute an opposition since they are placed on two distant valuerelated poles. It seems that in the linguistic awareness there is no rich modern Moscow in separation from the backwards, poor and civilizationally and mentally neglected provinces characterised by parochialism. The characteristic features of both concepts are most clearly visible in their juxtaposition, and without it they lose their meaning. This is a specific relationship which has not been observed in other antonymous pairs of concepts such as good and evil, or wealth and poverty.
