Opis:
Adsorption of clofibric acid (CA) and propyphenazone (PPZ) to virgin granular activated carbon (GAC) and preloaded GAC was evaluated in the absence or presence of natural organic matter (NOM). In spite of lower log K ow, PPZ showed higher selectivity to GAC than CA, which has a carboxylic group. Adsorption competition between CA and PPZ in binary solutes system decreased the amount of individual compound adsorbed to GAC. Adsorption isotherm data obtained in the presence of NOM showed that NOM in bulk solution or preloaded on GAC could significantly reduce the amounts of CA and PPZ adsorbed to GAC.

Opis:
Purpose: Low density polyethylene is commonly used polymer in the industry because of its unique structure and excellent overall performance. LDPE, is relatively low mechanical properties and thermal stability can sometimes limit its application in industry. Therefore, the development of particulate reinforced polymer composites is one of the highly promising methodologies in the area of next generation engineering products. Design/methodology/approach: Nano and Micro composite from low density polyethylene LDPE reinforced with different weight fraction of carbon black particles (CB) (2, 4 and 8)% prepared by first dispersion Nano and Micro carbon black particles CB in solvent and then mixing manually with low density polyethylene LDPE pellet and blended by twin-screw extruder, the current research study the mechanical properties (tensile strength, elastic modulus, and hardness), FTIR, DSC,and thermal conductivity of prepared nano and micro composites using two methodes and the morphological properties of nano-micro composites. Findings: The tensile strength of the LDPE/CB nano and micro composites improved at 2% and 4%, respectively, and decreasing at 8%, addition of carbon black nanoparticles led to increase the tensile strength of pure low-density polyethylene from 13.536 MPa to 19.71 MPa, and then dropping to 11.03 MPa at 8% percent, while the elastic modulus of LDPE/ CB nano and miro composites shows an improvement with all percentages of CB. The results show that the mechanical properties were improved by the addition carbon black nanoparticles more than addition micro- carbon black . FTIR show that physical interaction between LDPE and carbon black. The thermal conductivity improvement from 0.33 w/m.k for pur LDPE to 0.62234 w/m.k at 2% CB microparticle content and the reduced to 0.18645 w/m.k and 0.34063 w/m.k at (4 and 8)% micro-CB respectively , The thermal conductivity of LDPE-CB nano-composites is low in general than that the LDPE-CB microcomposite. DSC result show improvement in crystallization temperature Tc, melting temperature and degree of crystallization with addition nano and micro carbon black. Morever, SEM images revealed to uniform distribution and good bonding between LDPE and CB at low percentages and the precence of some agglomeration at high CB content. Research limitations/implications: This research studied the characteristics of both nano and micro composite materials prepared by two steps: mixing CB particles with solvent and then prepared by twin extruder which can be used packaging material, but the main limitation was the uniform distribution of nano and micro CB particles within the LDPE matrix. In a further study, prepare a blend from LDPE with other materials and improve the degradation of the blend that used in packaging application. Originality/value: LDPE with nanocomposites are of great interest because of their thermal stability, increased mechanical strength, stiffness, and low gas permeability, among other properties that have made them ideal for applications in the packaging and automotive industries. LDPE reinforcements nano-sized carbon black can have better mechanical and thermal properties than micron, resulting in less material being needed for a given application at a lower cost.

Opis:
Diamond-like carbon (DLC), in particular hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films have been formed on various conductive and dielectric materials by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition $(PI^{3}D)$ processing. Effect of pulse voltage and other process parameters on the film properties was investigated. It was found that for conductive substrates, a low-voltage ( ≈1 kV), high repetition rate pulsing provides better overall film performance comparing to that obtained by applying higher voltages, which is also favourable for conformal treatment of 3D workpieces. However, short 1-2 μs, high-voltage 5-20 kV pulses are required for dielectric workpieces several millimeter thick. Good film adhesion was achieved by forming a Si-containing buffer layer using hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as a precursor and a low-voltage pulsing. Roughness and wettability of DLC coatings was found to be controlled by varying the bias specs and sample temperature. Very smooth films with average roughness less than 1 Å were prepared at optimised process parameters.

Opis:
This paper presents the design analysis and performance of an energy harvesting prototype device operating on the principle of electromechanical energy conver- sion. The input vibration kinetic energy is converted into the output electrical energy. A spring - mass system with moving permanent magnet (PM) is mechanically excited by external vibrations. The voltage is induced in a stationary coil that is embraced by PM poles. When the coil is loaded with an external impedance, an electric current proportional to the induced EMF arises in the external circuit. Fundamental equations for performance calculations have been derived on the basis of elementary beam theory and circuit analysis. A prototype has been built and the calculation results have been validated with the test results.

Opis:
An image recall system using a large scale associative memory employing the generalized Brain-State-in-a-Box (gBSB) neural network model is proposed. The gBSB neural network can store binary vectors as stable equilibrium points. This property is used to store images in the gBSB memory. When a noisy image is presented as an input to the gBSB network, the gBSB net processes it to filter out the noise. The overlapping decomposition method is utilized to efficiently process images using their binary representation. Furthermore, the uniform quantization is employed to reduce the size of the data representation of the images. Simulation results for monochrome gray scale and color images are presented. Also, a hybrid gBSB-McCulloch-Pitts neural model is introduced and an image recall system is built around this neural net. Simulation results for this model are presented and compared with the results for the system employing the gBSB neural model.

Since 2003, a project has been underway to analyse the most serious occupational accidents in The Netherlands. All the serious occupational accidents investigated by the Dutch Labour Inspectorate for the 12 years of 1998−2009 inclusive have been entered into a database, a total of 20 030 investigations. This database uses a model of safety barriers supported by barrier tasks and management delivery systems such that, when combined with sector and year information, trends in the data can be analysed for their underlying causes. The trend analyses show that while the number of victims of serious reportable accidents is significantly decreasing, this is due to specific sectors, hazards and underlying causes. The significant results could not easily be directly associated with any specific regulation or action undertaken in The Netherlands although there have been many different approaches to reducing accidents during the period analysed, which could be contributing to the effect.

Opis:
The influence of surface heat treatment using laser radiation on the fatigue strength and corresponding microstructural evolution of AISI 4140 alloy steel was investigated in this research. The AISI 4140 alloy steel was radiated by a diode laser to give surface temperatures in the range between 600 and 800°C, and subsequently underwent vibration peening. The fatigue behavior of surface-treated specimens was examined using a giga-cycle ultrasonic fatigue test, and it was compared with that of non-treated and only-peened specimens. Fatigue fractured surfaces and microstructural evolution with respect to the laser treatment temperatures were investigated using an optical microscope. Hardness distribution was measured using Vickers micro-hardness. Higher laser temperature resulted in higher fatigue strength, attributed to the phase transformation.

Flow behavior of a ZK60A magnesium alloy after continuous casting and subsequent extrusion was examined in tension at a range of strain rates of 3.0×10-6 − 1.0×10-2 s-1 at temperatures of 473-623K. The results demonstrated that the alloy exhibited a maximum elongation of ~250% at 523K when tested at an initial strain rate of 1.0×10-5 s-1 and strain rate sensitivity, m, of ~0.3-0.4 and the activation energy of ~94 kJ/mol were calculated under the testing conditions. The detailed investigation suggested that the high temperature flow of the ZK60A alloy having submicrometer grains demonstrates quasi-superplastic flow behavior controlled by a dislocation viscous glide process.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of calcium (Ca) on the surface characteristics and physical properties of magnesium-calcium alloys after anodization. A novel binary alloy Mg-xCa (in which x=0.5, 1, or 5 wt.%) was cast by combining magnesium (99.9%) and calcium (99.9%) in an argon gas (99.99%) atmosphere. A magnesium alloy rod having a diameter of 15 mm was cut into discs, each 2 mm thick. The specimens were subjected to anodic oxidation at 120 V for 15 minutes at room temperature in an electrolyte solution consisting of calcium gluconate, sodium hexametaphosphate, and sodium hydroxide. Surface and cross-sectional morphological changes were observed using scanning electron microscopy, and the microstructures and phases were detected by means of X-ray diffraction. Hardness and surface roughness were assessed by means of a Vickers hardness tester and a surface roughness meter, respectively. The results show that the physical properties of these magnesium-calcium alloys have been improved, because it was possible to control the dissolution rate according to the amount of calcium added.

SiC/Cu composite powders with the barrier coating of SiC-Al onto SiC powders were synthesized from Al-containing polycarbosilane precursor and Cu-nitrate hydrate. Curing at 200°C and high temperature pyrolysis at 1600°C was used to achieve the crystallization of precursor, forming the SiC-Al coating on the surface of SiC powders. A core-shell structure with the core of SiC and the shell of Cu was constructed by calcination and hydrogen-reduction of Cu nitrate hydrate. XRD and SEM analysis revealed that the β-SiC and 4H-SiC phases were formed on the surface of the initial α-SiC powders. Also, it was observed by EDX mapping that core powders of SiC were homogeneously surrounded with the fine Cu particles on their surface.

Microstructure observation revealed that large aggregates were formed in the early stages of ball milling, and further milling to 5 h decreased particle size. The average crystalline size, estimated by the peak broadening of XRD, decreased from 28 nm to 15 nm with increasing milling time from 1 h to 5 h. SEM and EPMA analysis showed that the main elements of Ni and Cr were homogeneously distributed inside the powders after ball milling of 5 h.
