    Opis:
    An in-situ nanoindenter with a flat tip was employed to conduct buckling tests of a single nanowire with simultaneous SEM imaging. A series of SEM images allowed us to calculate deflection. The deflection was confronted with the mathematical model of elastica. The post-buckling behaviour of nanowires is conducted in the framework of the nonlinear elasticity theory. Results show the significant effect of geometrical parameters on the stability of buckled nanowires.

    Abdülhamid II odziedziczył flotę, która pod względem liczebnym uchodziła za trzecią na świecie, ale wskutek porażki w wojnie z Rosją (1877–1878) zmuszony został do zepchnięcia jej na dalszy plan i pilnego zajęcia się odbudową sił lądowych. Przez 30 lat osmańskie okręty nie opuszczały Stambułu, co miało katastrofalny wpływ zarówno na ich stan techniczny, jak i na poziom wyszkolenia załóg. Kolejny sułtan, Mehmed V, zmierzył się więc z koniecznością odbudowy marynarki wojennej. Turcy zwrócili się o pomoc merytoryczną do Londynu, w rezultacie czego w latach 1909–1914 wysłane zostały do Stambułu trzy kolejne brytyjskie misje morskie. Różnice kulturowe i rozbieżności w kwestii koncepcji rozwoju floty sprawiły jednak, że współpraca między oboma stronami nie przebiegała harmonijnie. Ważną rolę odegrały też nieszczerość intencji Brytyjczyków, wyraźny konflikt interesów oraz świadome stosowanie przez Turków dywersyfikacji dostaw broni i pomocy eksperckiej. Mimo całkowitego braku przygotowania do udziału w jakimkolwiek konflikcie zbrojnym, Osmańska Marynarka Wojenna poradziła sobie nadspodziewanie dobrze zarówno podczas wojen bałkańskich, jak i w czasie pierwszej wojny światowej.
    Abdülhamid II inherited a navy which in terms of quantity was considered to be the third in the world, but as a result of defeat in war with Russia (1877–1878) he was forced to push it to the background and to deal urgently with the reconstruction of his land forces. For 30 years his ships were not to leave Constantinople, which was to have a devastating effect on their technical condition as well as on the training level of naval personnel. Thus it was his successor Mehmed V who faced the necessity of reconstruction of the Ottoman Navy. The Turks applied for substantive assistance to London and as a result three consecutive British Naval Missions were sent to Constantinople for the period 1909–1914. Cultural differences and discrepancies regarding the concept of navy development made the cooperation between the parties unharmonious. The insincerity of intentions on the side of the British, a clear conflict of interests as well as a conscious diversification of weapon deliveries and the employment of foreign experts applied by the Turks were to play an important role too. Despite being completely unprepared for any military conflict, both during the Balkan Wars and the Great War the Ottoman Navy did its job surprisingly well.

    Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest początkowemu okresowi kariery adm. Martina Erica Dunbar-Nasmitha (1883–1965) i stanowi próbę podsumowania jego osiągnięć podczas trzech podwodnych patroli w Dardanelach i na Morzu Marmara w 1915 r. Misje te przyniosły mu miano najskuteczniejszego brytyjskiego “podwodniaka” pierwszej wojny światowej. W anglosaskiej historiografii wszystkie publikacje poświęcone działaniom Nasmitha na wodach tureckich stanowią jednostronną narrację, opartą wyłącznie na źródłach brytyjskich. Autor podjął więc pierwszą w zachodniej historiografii próbę skonfrontowania brytyjskiego i tureckiego punktu widzenia. Podobnej konfrontacji podejmowano się kilkukrotnie w Turcji, ale jej efekty nie są powszechnie znane zachodnim historykom i w kilku przypadkach budzą zastrzeżenia. Decyzja o podjęciu się niniejszego wyzwania wynika ze świadomości tego, że ocena sytuacji dokonywana przez Nasmitha, w chwili, gdy osobiście obserwował efekty swych ataków, nie mogła być pełna i całkowicie obiektywna. Nie miał prawa wiedzieć, że niektóre z zatopionych przez niego na płytkich wodach przybrzeżnych jednostek zostały przez Turków podniesione z dna i przywrócone do służby. Artykuł ten stanowi szczegółowe omówienie ataków na osmańskie okręty wojenne, statki handlowe o napędzie parowym i cele lądowe, podjętych przez Nasmitha podczas wszystkich trzech patroli okrętu podwodnego “E11.” W rezultacie swoich badań autor zwraca uwagę na to, iż bilans drugiego patrolu, zarówno pod względem strat zadanych osmańskiej marynarce wojennej, jak i flocie transportowej był bez porównania lepszy niż pierwszego (za który Nasmith odznaczony został Krzyżem Wiktorii). W przypadku strat floty transportowej łączny tonaż definitywnie zatopionych jednostek o napędzie parowym był o ponad 470 procent większy. Choć Nasmith twierdził, że podczas wszystkich trzech patroli zatopił co najmniej 122 osmańskie jednostki pływające, to według źródeł tureckich liczba okrętów i parowców, które definitywnie unieszkodliwił nie przekroczyła piętnastu.
    The article is devoted to the early phase of the career of Martin Eric Nasmith (1883–1965) and is an attempt to summarise his achievements during three underwater patrols in the Dardanelles and the Sea of Marmara in 1915. Those missions brought him the appellation of the most effective British submariner of WW1. In Anglophone historiography, all the books and articles related to this subject constitute a one-sided narrative based solely on British sources. Thus, the author has made the first attempt in western historiography to compare the British and Turkish points of view. Although a few such efforts have been made in Turkey, their results are not widely known to western historians, and in some cases, they raise objections. The decision to take up this challenge came from an awareness that Nasmith’s view of the situation at the moment when he was personally observing the effects of his attacks could not be complete and entirely objective. He could not have known that some of the vessels he had sunk in shallow coastal waters were salvaged by the Turks and restored to service. The article gives detailed coverage of the attacks conducted by Nasmith on Ottoman warships, steam-powered merchant ships and land targets, during all three patrols of the “E11” submarine. As a result of his research, the author was able to draw attention to the fact that the results of “E11”’s second patrol were incomparably more favourable than those of the first one (for which Nasmith was awarded the Victoria Cross), both in terms of losses inflicted on the Ottoman Navy and on the transport fleet. In the case of the latter, the total tonnage of definitively sunken steam-powered vessels was more than 470 percent higher. While Nasmith claimed that he had sunk at least 122 Ottoman vessels during all three patrols, Turkish sources indicate that the total number of warships and steam-powered transport ships definitively destroyed by him did not exceed fifteen.

    Currently, due to the economic and ecological aspects, light alloys are increasingly important construction material, in particular in the transport industry. One of the popular foundry magnesium alloys is the alloy AZ91, which among others due to mechanical properties and technological features, is used, for example, for light structural parts. The paper presents the results of research on modification of the AZ91 alloy surface layer in the plasma electrolytic oxidation process. The change of usable properties of the produced coatings was obtained by introducing additions of silicon carbide or boron nitride. The thickness and hardness of the protective layers produced, resistance to scratches and corrosion resistance were determined. Moreover, the friction coefficient of the coating-steel pair was investigated. The quality of the connections made between the coating and the substrate, i.e. the magnesium alloy, was also evaluated. The results obtained for coatings with silicon carbide or boron nitride additives were always compared to the results obtained for unmodified samples. On the basis of the obtained results, it was shown that the introduction of boron nitride additive to the AZ91 alloy coating produced in the plasma electrolytic oxidation process significantly improves the resistance to: (i) corrosion and (ii) abrasive wear of the coating.
