The paper discusses the Polish Catholic Church’s ambiguous contribution to the public debate on settling accounts with the Polish-Jewish wartime past. The Church is an actor of right-wing historical politics, which casts Poles in the role of the primary victims of the war but is reluctant to speak out on the Shoah. The growing scholarly interest in the dark chapters in the history of Catholic-Jewish relations, which brings to light the Church’s institutional and symbolic responsibility for its attitude towards the persecuted Jewish community, has not translated directly into greater visibility of the issue in the mainstream media. However, the Church’s ceremonial indifference towards the memory of the Shoah is not resistant to changes in the historiography of the Shoah. The Church’s stance in the debate on the memory of the Shoah insufficiently recognises its position about the Jewish tragedy. On the other hand, it includes the actions undertaken by Father Wojciech Lemański and Bishop Rafał Markowski to commemorate the Jewish victims. The recognition of this cleavage aligns with sociological analyses of axiological divisions in Polish society.

Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, w jaki sposób powieść Thomasa Mann pt. Czarodziejska góra została zaadaptowana na dzieło operowe Pawła Mykietyna z librettem Małgorzaty Sikorskiej-Miszczuk. Ze względu na prymarną funkcję libretta, jaką jest przekazywanie treści, temu elementowi poświęcono najwięcej uwagi, w artykule wskazane zostały jednak również elementy dźwiękowe opery, które w znaczący sposób dopełniają treść słowną. Tekst napisany jest metaforycznym językiem, opiera się na krótkich scenach, w których widoczna jest duża kondensacja treści i fragmentaryczność zauważalna w aluzjach do powieści przefiltrowanych przez wizję autorki. Znamienną cechą tworzywa libretta są pytania, na których opierają się partie dialogowe bohaterów. W libretcie uderza redukcja powieści Manna – mamy do czynienia z tekstem, dla którego powieść była tylko źródłem inspiracji. Autorom koncepcji libretta (Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk i Andrzej Chyra) przyświecała idea, by dopowiedzieć pewne wątki przez Manna nierozwinięte, stworzyć powieściowy apokryf, wydobywający z pierwowzoru to, co niejasne – bez konieczności ścisłego ilustrowania przebiegu narracji. Stawiając na pierwszym planie problemy egzystencjalne, punktem ciężkości i osnową libretta uczyniono uczucia i stany emocjonalne bohaterów, a zupełnie odsunięto wątki polityczne i społeczne obecne u Manna. Między powieścią Manna a librettem dokonano według typologii przekładu intermedialnego Eugenia Spedicato obok redukcji operacji kondensacji, dyfuzji i amplifikacji. Mimo ogromnej redukcji tysiącstronicowej powieści do poetyckiego tekstu liczącego około trzydziestu stron w libretcie Czarodziejskiej góry mamy do czynienia także z operacją zrównania na kilku poziomach: przeniesienia do opery głównych bohaterów powieści, zachowania osi fabuły oraz relacji między bohaterami. Operową amplifikację stanowi między innymi postać Amerykanki, figura-symbol śmierci pod postacią anakondy, rozwinięcie scen miłosnych, odwołania do współczesnych kodów popkulturowych. Nowoczesne podejście kompozytora do dzieła operowego pozwoliło uzyskać większą ilustracyjność – nie tylko poprzez muzykę, ale i dźwięki konkretne w znacznym stopniu dopełnić tekst libretta, obie te warstwy stanowią istotne nośniki treści.
This article explores how Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain was adapted for Paweł Mykietyn’s opera to a libretto by Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk. Since a libretto’s primary function is to convey content, most attention has been devoted to that aspect of the opera, but the musical elements which complement the verbal content in a significant manner are also pointed out. Written in metaphorical language, the opera’s text is based on short, condensed scenes of a fragmentary nature, which is evident in allusions to the novel filtered through the librettist’s vision. One characteristic element of this libretto consists of questions that form the basis for the dialogues between the protagonists. The text represents a striking reduction of Mann’s novel, which served merely as a source of inspiration. The authors of the concept behind the libretto (Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk and Andrzej Chyra) were motivated by a desire to expand some of the themes not developed in Mann’s original, and thus to create an apocryphal version of the novel, bringing out elements which remained unclear, but without the need to strictly represent the course of the narrative. By bringing existential problems to the fore, the librettists shifted the focus and centre of gravity to the protagonists’ feelings and emotional states, while the political and social strands present in Mann’s novel were passed over entirely. According to Eugenio Spedicato’s typology of intermedial translation, the librettists applied, apart from a reduction of the novel, such techniques as condensation, diffusion and amplification. Despite the radical reduction of the one-thousand-page novel to a poetical text of about thirty pages, the libretto also preserves some degree of ‘sameness’ by transplanting the novel’s main characters to the opera, and retaining the main axis of the plot and the relations between its protagonists. Elements of operatic amplification include the character of the American woman, the symbolic figure of death in the form of an anaconda, the expanded love scenes, and references to the codes of contemporary pop culture. The composer’s modern approach to writing an opera made the work more illustrative, not only on the musical level; concrete sounds also largely supplement the text of the libretto. Those two layers are essential bearers of content.

Post-Foucauldian discourse and dispositif analysis, a methodological approach inspired by the work of Michel Foucault and developed in Western Europe, over the last decade has gained an increasing amount of attention from Eastern European researchers. Yet, this interest has not been accompanied by sufficient reflection on the post-Foucauldian perspective’s adequacy for studying power, governance, and subjectification in post-socialist societies. In particular, there is little criticism that would take into account the current discussion on Foucault’s ambivalent attitude towards neoliberalism. The goal of this article is to examine this line of criticism of Foucault’s late works and to point to its importance for dispositif analysis carried out in Eastern and Central European societies (e.g., Poland) in comparison to analyses carried out in Western Europe (e.g., Germany). I propose a number of methodological recommendations that aim at adapting post-Foucauldian research instruments to facilitate analyzing power relations in the post-socialist context; these include: an interdisciplinary combination of discourse analysis and an analysis of macroeconomic and macrosocial factors; an analysis of the practices of normalization in post-socialist societies with reference to the Center-Periphery relationship; introducing elements of semiology, anthropology of the contemporary and cultural identity analysis to dispositif analysis.

Purpose: The present research aimed to determine whether and how the aluminium chloride – based materials affect the cell line of the bacterial line and fungi. Methods: Cytotoxicity of haemostatic astringents: Alustat (liquid), Alustat (gel), Alustat (foam), Alustin, Hemostat, Racestyptine and Traxodent containing AlCl3 was conducted on L929 cell line with the use of MTT and SRB assays. The antimicrobial activity (CFU and MIC) against C. albicans, S. mutans, L. rhamnosus was determined. Results: In the MTT results, cell viability for all agents were very low. In SRB, the lowest cytotoxicity was demonstrated for Hemostat and Alustat (foam), Traxodent and Racestyptine. Total reduction of the CFU of S. mutans was observed. Alustat (gel) and Alustat (liquid) completely inhibited the growth of C. albicans, S. mutans and L. rhamnosus. Conclusions: The viability of L929 cells obtained in the SRB assay is more reliable than that obtained in the MTT assay, in the case of gingival haemostatic agents.

The article discusses uses of dispositif analysis inspired by Michel Foucault’s late works, in a context different from the original one. The author presents the main methodological assumptions of dispositif analysis and the factors which result in its critical and interdisciplinary potential not being fully exploited at present. Based on a literature review of dispositif analysis in post-socialist Eastern Europe, the author formulates an interdisciplinary research program aimed at adapting this approach to the study of East European power networks, taking into account both its different historical, cultural, and geopolitical context – compared to the one of West European countries – and Foucault’s conception of neoliberalism. Methodological recommendations are presented in two research areas: 1) labor in the Polish post-transformation society; and 2) reactions to pedophilia in the Polish Catholic Church.
Artykuł dotyczy zastosowań analizy dyspozytywu, inspirowanej przez późne prace Michela Foucaulta, w innym kontekście niż oryginalny. Autorka prezentuje główne założenia metodologiczne analizy dyspozytywu oraz czynniki, które blokują pełne wykorzystanie jej krytycznego i interdyscyplinarnego potencjału. Na podstawie przeglądu dorobku analizy dyspozytywu w postsocjalistycznej Europie Wschodniej autorka formułuje propozycję interdyscyplinarnego programu badawczego. Jego celem jest zaadaptowanie tego podejścia do badań wschodnioeuropejskich siatek władzy przy uwzględnieniu zarówno innego kontekstu historycznego, kulturowego i geopolitycznego niż w krajach Europy Zachodniej, jak i specyficznego postrzegania neoliberalizmu u Foucaulta. Rekomendacje metodologiczne są przedstawione na przykładzie dwóch obszarów badań: 1) pracy w polskim społeczeństwie potransformacyjnym i 2) reakcji na pedofilię w polskim Kościele katolickim.

Celem artykułu jest wprowadzenie w tematykę numeru poświęconego interdyscyplinarnym badaniom dyskursu. Redaktorzy tomu umiejscawiają tytułową problematykę w kontekście wyzwań, jakie w XXI wieku stoją przed analizą dyskursu jako perspektywą badawczą. Po pierwsze, chodzi o wyeksplikowanie poznawczego celu analizy, związanego z odsłanianiem mechanizmów forsowania różnych i konstruowanych dyskursywnie faktów oraz prawd moralnych. Po drugie, dylematem zarówno ideologicznym, jak i metodologicznym jest opowiedzenie się badaczy i badaczek dyskursu za analizą neutralną wobec swojego przedmiotu lub zaangażowaną w projekt zmiany rzeczywistości komunikacyjnej i społecznej. Po trzecie, wyzwaniem jest wybór między dyscyplinarnie jednorodnym a różnorodnym postępowaniem badawczym i wykorzystanie tego drugiego do wzmacniania wrażliwości krytycznej w badaniach dyskursu. W końcowej części artykułu prezentowane są teksty zebrane w tym tomie i ich główne przesłanki metodologiczne.
The paper aims at introducing this special issue on interdisciplinary discourse studies. The editors of the volume locate the titular problem in the context of challenges that discourse analysis has to face as a research perspective in the 21st century. Firstly, it is about explicating an analysis’ heuristic goal, which is connected with the unveiling of the mechanisms that serve to force heterogenous and discursively constructed facts and moral truths. Secondly, there is a dilemma – both ideological and methodological – as to whether discourse researchers should orient themselves towards a neutral analysis, or if they should undertake engaged research projects aiming at social and communicational change. Thirdly, another challenge concerns a choice between disciplinarily homogeneous and heterogeneous research conduct, and using the latter to reinforce critical responsiveness in discourse studies. In the final part of this paper, the authors present articles published in the volume herein as well as their central methodological premises.

Artykuł dotyczy przemian dyskursu liberalnego w Polsce w kontekście aktualnych podziałów politycznych. Przedmiot badania stanowi liberalno-lewicowa narracja (rozumiana jako struktura dyskursu mająca formę wartościującego, kauzalnego i usytuowanego historycznie opisu zdarzeń i ich uczestników) o transformacji ustrojowej, jej ideowych źródłach i skutkach społecznych. Analiza skoncentrowana jest na publicystyce dwóch wiodących autorów liberalno-lewicowych: Grzegorza Sroczyńskiego i Rafała Wosia. Na podstawie ich artykułów prasowych, internetowych, książek i audycji radiowych z lat 2013–2018 wyróżniono główne struktury nowej narracji liberalno-lewicowej dotyczące między innymi rozliczania (neo)liberałów, ujmowania się za ludem i różnicy pokoleniowej rzutującej na ocenę transformacji. Postawiono także pytanie o komunikacyjną skuteczność, oryginalność i tożsamość dyskursywną formułowanej przez tych publicystów narracji.
The paper discusses changes of the liberal discourse in the context of current political divisions in Poland. The left-liberal narrative (understood as a structure of discourse and taking form of an evaluative, causal and historically situated description of events and their participants) on systemic transformation, its ideological sources and social outcomes is here the main subject of research. The analysis is focused on the journalism of two leading left-liberal authors: Grzegorz Sroczyński and Rafał Woś. On the basis of their articles in the press and Internet, books and radio broadcasts from 2013–2018 the main structures of the new left-liberal narrative were distinguished which concern i.a. settling accounts with (neo)liberals, embracing the people and the generation gap impinging the evaluation of the transition. The communicative effectiveness, originality and discursive identity of the narrative formulated by Sroczyński and Woś is also discussed and questioned in this paper.

Celem eseju jest omówienie pracy Piotra Kulasa pt. Inteligenckość zaprzeczona. Etos i tożsamość młodych inteligenckich elit w kontekście dorobku polskich badań nad samowiedzą inteligencji oraz analiz przemian znaczenia, statusu i publicznej roli tej kategorii społecznej. Na podstawie wywiadów z kilkudziesięciorgiem młodych przedstawicieli elit symbolicznych Kulas rekonstruuje między innymi ich stosunek do inteligenckiej samoidentyfikacji, opinie o społecznej roli inteligencji i podejście do innych klas społecznych. Oś badań stanowi kwestia długiego trwania inteligenckiego etosu w warunkach potransformacyjnych. Autorka niniejszego eseju stawia pytanie o to, na ile Kulas esencjalizuje i psychologizuje kategorię etosu inteligenckiego, a na ile rekonstruuje jej reprezentacje w dyskursie młodych inteligentów.

Social sciences are interested in ethnic entrepreneurship as a chance for migrants to (better) integrate into the host labour market, and in consequence into a host society. Th e multidimensional models capture a wide range of factors at the bottom of the economic behaviour of migrant entrepreneurs, and they increasingly consider that migrants might profit in business from sustaing their social ties with the country of their origin. Looking at Polish migrant entrepreneurs in eastern German regions bordering to Poland we plead for a relational perspective which considers migrants’ business activities in relation to the patterns of trans-border residential mobility and complex social and economic transformations in Polish and German border regions.

The article regards the public debate focusing on the assessment of the political transformation andthe model of modernisation implemented in Poland after 1989. In recent years, the conservative and right-wingcriticism, which focused on pro-Western modernisation and the liberal discourse of transformational success,is more and more often accompanied with self-criticising statements uttered by the former liberal leaders ofthe democratic transformation and with appeals for a radical retribution of the past which are put forward bythe young generation of Polish intellectuals. On the basis of the analysis of the public discourse between 2013and 2017, the author differentiates between the retribution and reckoning dimensions of the liberal and leftistdiscourse, reconstructing its interpretative and argumentative structures. The discourse of ‘being disappointedwith the transformation’ is considered a symptom of the condition of public debate in Poland.

Postfoucauldian discourse analysis is a vigorously developing approach to discourse studies focusing on the analysis of power, discourse, knowledge and social practice. This comprises studies deriving from Michel Foucault’s thought, reinterpreting it, however, with the aim at application to an analysis of empirical data, also from the field of pedagogy and education. The purpose of this paper is to present main concepts and categories of postfoucauldian discourse analysis (e.g. enunciation, discursive formation, discursive practice, procedures for the control of discourse, dispositive, regime of truth) and guidelines for conducting research on the example of an analysis of chosen public texts concerning the debate on liquidation of middle schools in Poland as a result of the reform of education carried out by Law and Justice’ government.
