Opis:
Amyloidosis, a serious and widespread disease with a genetic background , manifests itself through the formation of dangerous fibrils in various organs. Apart from the polluted environment and an unhealthy lifestyle, genetic factors may accelerate this process leading in some cases to lethal damages to the body. Recently, a growing interest in amyloidogenic protein research has been observed. Transthyretin (TTR) is a tetrameric protein that transports thyroid hormone thyroxine and retinol binding protein in plasma and the cerebral fluid. Sometimes TTR breaks apart and forms fibrils. Several single point mutations, having de stabilizing impact on the TTR complex, are involved in the amyloidogenic TTR cascade. Problems with the TTR tetramer stability and conformational space characteristics of the protein have not been addressed computationally before. We present selected results of our molecular dynamics (MD, ∼ 2000ns) and steered MD simulations ( SMD ) of three variants of TTR : Wild Type ( WT ), V 30 M and L 55 P . SMD has been used to enforce the dissociation of TTR . Conformational spaces of WT TTR and its amyloidogenic variants have been investigated using a novel “ One Place One Conformation ” ( OPOC ) algorithm based on a graph technique called Petrinet (PN) formalism. While the PN approach alone does not permit a direct identification of protein regions with reduced stability, it gives quite a useful tool for an effective compari son of complex protein energy landscapes explored during classical and/or SMD steered molecular dynamics simulations.

Opis:
We present a novel approach to vision-based localization of electric city buses for assisted docking to a charging station. The method assumes that the charging station is a known object, and employs a monocular camera system for positioning upon carefully selected point features detected on the charging station. While the pose is estimated using a geometric method and taking advantage of the known structure of the feature points, the detection of keypoints themselves and the initial recognition of the charging station are accomplished using neural network models. We propose two novel neural network architectures for the estimation of keypoints. Extensive experiments presented in the paper made it possible to select the MRHKN architecture as the one that outperforms state-of-the-art keypoint detectors in the task considered, and offers the best performance with respect to the estimated translation and rotation of the bus with a low-cost hardware setup and minimal passive markers on the charging station.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to formulate physically well founded yield condition for initially anisotropic solids revealing the asymmetry of elastic range. The initial anisotropy occurs in material primarily due to thermo-mechanical pre-processing and plastic deformation during the manufacturing processes. Therefore, materials in the “as-received” state become usually anisotropic. After short account of the known limit criteria for anisotropic solids and discussion of mathematical preliminaries the energy-based criterion for orthotropic materials was formulated and confronted with experimental data and numerical predictions of other theories. Finally, possible simplifications are discussed and certain model of isotropic material with yield condition accounting for a correction of shear strength due to initial anisotropy is presented. The experimental verification is provided and the comparison with existing approach based on the transformed-tensor method is discussed.

Opis:
Pathological conditions of a male urethra, including fibrosis, have a mechanical background along the entire length of the urethra. They may be caused by excessive deformation of the urethra locally or globally. The condition of prolonged overload causes abnormal tissue remodelling and, consequently, the formation of a thick layer of scar tissue differentiated from the connective tissue of the urethra. This tissue, which has higher mechanical properties, is not highly deformable and therefore, causes a decrease in the diameter of the urethra, which results in conditions that disturb the natural flow of urine. In this paper, it was decided to determine the deformation conditions in the proximal part of the urethra. The study was conducted in three main stages. Transverse sections of the animal urethral tissues were prepared in order to examine mechanical properties and perform histological examinations. On the basis of these examinations, material models which fitted best for the experimental results were sought. Material constants of the Mooney-Rivlin material model with the best fit ratio were determined for further research. On the basis of histological photographs, a geometrical and numerical model of the urethra was developed. The urethra was tested in a flat state of deformation. The strain and stress fields of the Caucha tensor were examined. The methodology of testing the dynamics of the urine flow in the highly deformable urethra was proposed. This is important for the analysis of the influence of at excessive pressure on pathological tissue remodelling leading to fibrosis.

Opis:
Introduction. The article describes the process of converting a large multi-specialized hospital into one dedicated to COVID-19 patients, and present established standards of work organization in all the wards and training system of the medical and supporting staff. The several weeks pandemic of the COVID-19 disease has forced the healthcare systems of numerous countries to adjust their resources to the care of the growing number of COVID-19 patients. Managers were presented with the challenge of protecting the healthcare workers from transmission of the disease within medical institutions, and issues concerning the physical and psychological depletion of personnel. Materials and method. Based on analyses of the structure and work processes in Central Clinical Hospital (CCH) reconstructive strategic plan was developed. It included: division of existing wards into observation and isolation wards; installing locks; weekly plan for supplying personal protection equipment (PPE); designating new access to the hospital and communication routes; training of medical and supporting staff. The plan was implemented from the first days of conversion of the hospital. Results. The wards of the CCH were converted for observation and isolation, and each one was fitted with sanitary locks. There was a big improvement in the supply of PPE for the medical staff. Separation of the ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ parts of the CCH were attained, and widespread intensive training not only protected personnel against infections, but also diminished unrest which was discernable at the beginning of conversion. Conclusions. The transformation efforts will ultimately be appraised at the end of the epidemic, but the data looks encouraging. Two weeks after conversion, the testing of hospital Staff was started and by the end of April, 459 tests were had been conducted, of which only 11 were positive.

Opis:
Introduction. Trauma is the third cause of death among the general population in Poland, and the first in people aged 1–44 years. Trauma centers are hospitals dedicated to treating patients with multiple organ injuries, in a complex way that endeavours to ensure a lower mortality rate, shorter hospital stay and better outcomes if the patients are transferred to such a center. Worldwide, there are many models on how to treat a trauma patient, but them to be qualified for the procedure, the selection of potential patients is crucial. Objective. The aim of the study was to compare the Polish model for qualification to a trauma center and American Guidelines for Field Triage. Materials and method. Retrospective analysis of medical documentation recorded between 1 January 2014 – 31 December 2014 was undertaken. The study concerned trauma patients admitted to the Emergency Department of the Regional Trauma Center at the Copernicus Memorial Hospital in Łódź, Poland. Inclusion criterion was initial diagnosis ‘multiple-organ injury’ among patients transported by the Emergency Medical Service (EMS). Results. In the period indicated, 3,173 patients were admitted to the Emergency Department at the Copernicus Memorial Hospital. From among them, 159 patients were included in the study. Only 13.2% of the patients fulfilled the Polish Qualification Criteria to Trauma Center in comparison to 87.4% who fulfilled the American Guidelines for Field Triage. Conclusions. Polish qualification criteria do not consider the large group of patients with severe injuries (ISS>15), but indicate patients with minimal chance of survival. Polish criteria do not consider the mechanism of injury, which is a relevant predictive indicator of severe or extremely severe injuries (ISS>15). Further studies should be undertaken to improve the qualification and treatment of trauma patients in Poland.

Opis:
This article presents the research results on impact of the method of polycrystalline graphene layers separation from the growth substrate on the obtained carbon material quality. The studies were carried out on graphene sheets obtained by metallurgical method on a liquid metal substrate (HSMG® graphene). The graphene was separated using chemical etching method or the electrochemical delamination method, by separating by means of electrolysis. During electrolysis, hydrogen is emitted on a graphene-covered of cathode (metal growth substrate) as a result of the voltage applied. The graphene layer breaks away from metallic substrate by gas accumulation between them. The results from these separation processes were evaluated by means of different tools, such as SEM, TEM and AFM microscopy as well as Raman Spectroscopy. In summary, the majority of analyses indicate that the graphene obtained as a result of hydrogen delamination possesses higher purity, smaller size and number of defects, its surface is smooth and less developed after the transfer process to the target substrate.

Opis:
In the last 20 years, a new meshless computational method has been developed that is called peridynamics. The method is based on the parallelized code. The subject of the study is the deformation of open-cell copper foams under dynamic compression. The computational model of virtual cellular material is considered. The skeleton structure of such a virtual cellular material can be rescaled according to requirements. The material of the skeleton is assumed as the oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper. The OFHC copper powder can be applied in additive manufacturing to produce the open-cell multifunctional structures, e. g., crush resistant heat exchangers, heat capacitors, etc. In considered peridynamic computations the foam skeleton is described with the use of an elastic-plastic model with isotropic hardening. The dynamic process of compression and crushing with different impact velocities is simulated.
