Home and its attributes as designata of the homeland in Tsvetaeva’s poetry occur in various pictures. These are among other things: home-reminiscence and home-dream. The first case con- cerns Russia before emigration. The second home is a metaphor of the return. The existence in exile, involving the fact of physical and spiritual alienation, entails the way of perceiving oneself. Tsvetaeva believed in the possibility of finding the way home, but it never arose.

Opis:
The subject of the analysis is the Nadezhda Teffi (Buczynska, borne Lokhvicka, 1872–1952) journalistic publicatios and the emigration prose. She spent more than thirty years in exile in Paris. The author focuses on the issues of linguistic identity of Russian emigration literature, with particular emphasis on the cultural context. The conducted analysis proves for that the representatives of the first wave of Russian emigration the mother tongue had a great importance. In addition to the communication function, he served two basic functions: information – as a way of creating and disseminating knowledge, values, traditions, etc., and integrating that reflected the emotional attitude to language. That is why Russian emigrants, although they knew foreign languages, mainly French and German, remained faithful to their homeland. At the same time, however, the works of emigrants were saturated with references to foreign languages.

Since the first years before the post-revolutionary emigration („the first wave”), the problem of the special assignment given by history appeared. Authors of the emigration literature understood its mission differently, however, they did agree on this one point: the principle of artistic freedom is the underlying reason for the emigrants’ literature. Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

This article recalls the circumstances of the first edition of the novel by Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago, in Polish translation, which appeared in 1959 in volume XLIV of the Biblioteka ‟Kultury” series, published by the Paris Literary Institute. Reconstruction of the history of this publishing initiative in the context of the political situation is possible thanks to historical sources preserved in the Paris and Warsaw archives, publications in periodicals, memoirs and epistolary culture. The circumstances in which the typescript was imported to Poland and in which the Literary Institute obtained a license for a Polish translation, the choice of translator, and Jerzy Giedroyc and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s correspondence are discussed. An important source of information is the lively correspondence between Maria Dąbrowska and Jerzy Stempowski, the son of a publicist and social activist, and Mason Stanisław Stempowski, a longtime life partner of the writer. The fragments of epistolary culture discussed here allow a better understanding of these outstanding individuals of the twentieth century. The content of the correspondence analyzed also allows us to reconstruct many interesting facts from the field of translating Russian literature into Polish, as well as the complex situation of Polish-Russian relations in the post-war period.

Suicide is, for centuries, a subject of particular interest in various fields, including philosophy, psychology and sociology. The author of this paper takes the “suicide and literature”, in order to examine selected examples of Russian literature. The analysis has highlighted the importance of a variety of typological models of suicides in literary works, as well as the determinants of suicidal behavior of Russian writers. Taken considerations include the spiritual, creative, social and socio- political aspects.

This article deals with the specifics of the language and the translational difficulties of Teffi (Nadezhda Lochwicka), one of the most recognized figures of pre-revolutionary Russia, poet, columnist and author of humorous stories. The author verifies the thesis essence on the material the novel’s title from the collection Demonic woman and her Polish variant in the translation of Julian Tuwim. Evaluating the choice validity of translator equivalents from the standpoint of the author’s individual style, the ideologicaltheatrical and the stylistic aspects were taken into account.

Olsztyn is an important center of emigrant-related research in Poland. The first works in this field were written at the beginning of the 1990s century. Currently, the results of research concerning the history of emigration literature are presented in the scientific series “The Luminaries of Russian Emigration”, “Theory and Practice of Translation”, “Between Words – Between the Worlds” and the scientific journal “Acta Polono-Ruthenica”.In 2018, at the Institute of Eastern Slavic Studies, UWM initiated a statutory subject Emigran-tion studies. Interpretation – Reception – Translation, which aims at conducting research focused on the description of history and heritage issues of cultural Russian emigration that can be assigned to such thematic areas as: history of the Russian literary process, issues of interpretation of the lit-erary text, Polish-Russian literary relations and literary translation. The essential focus the team is interdisciplinary research. The subject of the team’s research focuses on the most important aspects of emigration-related research, including the history of emigration, fate, the status of the emigrants and their spiritual, religious and political life.The author discusses the history, current state and perspective of Olsztyn’s emigration research, with particular emphasis on their international dimension.

Nadezhda Teffi (former Buczynska, born as Lochwicka, 1872-1952) - poet and novelist, one of the most interesting characters in Russian literature of the first half of the twentieth century. In 1920 Teffi left Russia supplying the same community of thousands of Russian immigrants. In Paris, still accompanied by the opinion of eminent satirist, but a poetic works can trace many aspects of the Teffi creative attitude, and especially reflective and nostalgic nature of the emigration work. The experience of exile provoked to think about the country, the world and herself in this world. Similar sentiments reflect the poems included in the books of poetry: Шамрам. Песни Востока (Songs of the East, Berlin, 1923), Passiflora (Berlin 1923) and in the poems published in collective volumes and anthologies. The article analyses the concept of death in the lyrics of Teffi. Semantical structure of this concept includes both objective senses and individual imaginations of the author.

In 1921-1923 Berlin was a centre of Russian emigration. Many poets and writers from Russia, like Maksim Gorki, Aleksy Remizow, Andriej Bieły, Ilja Erenburg, Aleksy Tołstoj, Władysław Chodasiewicz, Borys Pasternak, and for a short time also Marina Cwietajewa and Siergiej Jesienin, connected their life with this city. It was just in Berlin where was working one of the most interesting and the most intriguing writer of XX century (1922-1937) - Vladimir Nabokov. These period was characterized for him not only by happy moments (first love, marriage, birth of son), but also by tragic ones (death offather). His stay in Berlin marked out really important stage in creativity of Nabokov. It was theplace of his debut in the pages of Berlin’s newspaper “Руль” in 1921, in which he published his first poems under the pseudonym Sirin. In Berlin Nabokov wrote his first story and first novel. Itwas where he achieved his fame and formed his unique style of writing. Nabokov’s emigrant prose from 20’s constitutes an extraordinary guidebook to Berlin. In his art pieces he recreated the topography of Berlin by using architectural codes. Most often he related the code of home to a closed, domestic and peaceful circle. It is a circle tight in the meaning of space, but profound in the meaning of sensations. The lack of real home was a reason to lookingfor surrogate and it effected disorientation in the world in which poet had no place. The city hasa role of open, then foreign and hostile space. Here for the most part we can see the code in the shape of street or houses in city. This kind of code used by Nabokov, but also by other emigrantpoets, creates a feeling of disharmony, artificiality and unnaturalness.

In Senegal, where 94 per cent of the society are Muslims, the position of women differs from the most Islamic countries. The causes of this characteristic phenomenon are on the history, the religion, the philosophy and the pragmatism of Senegal. The fact that this country was for a very long time under different cultural and religious influences makes its people open-minded. Women participate in every field of activities. The main decisions in order to improve the situation of women, the equality of rights in the society, were taken since the Senegal's independence in 1960. That's why a Muslim woman in Senegal is able to carry out an active professional and social life, with keeping on her religious identity. There for the Senegalese society shows that Islam and modernity can exist in harmony. The Senegalese case shows also that Islam in Africa does not destroy native African culture.

This article’s topic is the analysis of the theme of sleep and ways of his linguistic representation in Nadezhda Teffi’s poetry. The author distinguishes various updates of the selected motif, divided them according to their meaning and thematic scope and pointed out their importance in the poetic achievements of the Russian emigrant. The subject of the analysis is the context of direct nominations of the lexeme, its derivates, semantic words and antonyms, appearing in the debut volume of poems Seven Fires (1910) and in Poetry Poems published in Exile: Passiflora Shamram. Songs of the East (1923). The research concept adopted by the author remains in line with the communication style of the text, whose tasks cover various aspects of the analysis of the literary text perceived as a form of communication reflecting both the stylistic standard and the individual style of the author.

This article draws attention to the issue of translating dramatic texts in the context of contemporary translation practices and to its essential role in the construction of the international cultural community. The status of the theater translator and specific linguistic or cultural problems are investigated based on the example of Polish translations of contemporary Russian playwright Yevgeni Grishkovetz’s work. The collaboration between the translator and the theatre is described as well as the factors affecting the final shape of the stage text and the difficulties involved in translating the works of the aforementioned author. An attempt is also made to examine the thin line between translation and adaptation. The analyzed material suggests that, rather than opting for the philological fidelity to the original, the translators desired to ensure the playwright’s works a “timeless” life on stage historically and artistically.

Translation of Phraseological Compounds with the Lexeme of Devil in the Polish Versions of the Mikhail Bulgakov’s Novel The Master and Margarita

Opis:
The fantastical and devilish qualities of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov created a need for the adequate means of expression. Therefore, the phraseological units are the most representative group, as they belong to the more colloquial part of language, and have a more familiar stylistic tone. The units with the words “chort” or “devil” are the most significant, therefore they were analysed in depth from the point of view of the translation theory. To exemplify the aforementioned phenomenon, the author refers to two sources: the canonical translation of The Master and Margarita by Irena Lewandowska and Witold Dąbrowski, which is still present in the consciousness of the Polish reader, and the newer version authored by Andrzej Drawicz. The comparative analysis of the selected material indicates that the authors of both translations preferred to use the phraseological units which differed in structure or the lexical composition from their Russian counterparts. However, the juxtaposed “translation equivalents” indicate the similarities in which Polish and Russian language capture our reality.

Visual poetical text came into existence as a connection of two types of activity - the poetical (verbal) one and the visual (graphic) one. It composes a varied phenomenon, which unites poetry, painting, graphic arts, fine arts and photography together. That dependence on each other was understood differently by particular artists in distinct periods of history. Russian literature also has its rich history of visual poetry. The first trials, which were started by Symeon of Polotsk in the 17th century, were continued by Gavrila Derzhavin, Alexei Apuchtin, Erl Martov, as well as others. This new and productive period of visual poetry was connected with the vanguard movement from the beginning of the 20th century, which spread across Europe. The biggest contribution into the development of this literary genre in Russia, not only in a practical matter, but also in a theoretic one, brought in futurists and constructivists, for whom the form became an essence, and a word became an image. The poetry of Vasily Kamensky (1884-1961) had a special place among different examples of experimental word-image Russian vanguard poetry. He is known as a Russian futurist, and a poem-experimenter. His poems prove that visual poetic graphic arts, can be recognized as a dominant force in the creating of and illustration of texts. This process can be done with a basic level of meaning in the writing and illustration of the text, however, this is purely linguistical.

This paper analyzes problems involved in the Polish translation of proper names contained in Boris Pasternak’s novel Doctor Zhivago. Empirical material was collected from two Polish translations published in book form: by Jerzy Stempowski (Paris: Instytut Literacki 1959) and by Ewa Rojewska-Olejarczuk (Warsaw: PIW 1990). The study aimed to analyze translatorial equivalents taking into account the following criteria: consistency with the named object, informativeness of the name, and retaining the cultural ambience. The following research methods were applied: descriptive, com-parative analysis as well as functional and stylistic analysis. The comparative analysis focused on the adequacy of the applied translation methods.

W centrum uwagi badawczej Autorki pozostaje koncept смех w rosyjskiej literaturze emigracyjnej. Celem artykułu jest analiza danego konceptu w prozie wspomnieniowej Nadieżdy Teffi, pisarki pierwszej fali emigracji rosyjskiej. Przedmiot niniejszej analizy stanowi leksyka wyekscerpowana z tomów Wspomnienia (1933) oraz Moja kronika (2015). Analiza została ukierunkowana na wyodrębnienie semantycznej struktury konceptu oraz sposobów jego lingwistycznego wyrażenia w tekście literackim. W procesie analizy odwołaliśmy się do metodologii zaproponowanej przez Josifa Sternina, co pozwoliło wyróżnić w strukturze konceptów różnorodne jednostki mentalne autorskiego obrazu świata, werbalizowane w tekstach literackich (sensy i wyobrażenia obiektywne oraz indywidualno-autorskie). Ponadto w badaniu wykorzystano metodę opisową oraz analizę funkcjonalno-stylistyczną. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy lingwistycznej możemy wnioskować, że koncept смех jest szeroko reprezentowany w prozie wspomnieniowej Teffi. Indywidualno-autorskie znaczenia reprezentujące peryferie analizowanego konceptu mają różną konotację. Uczucia i emocje wyrażane za pomocą śmiechu w świecie przedstawionym są zarówno pozytywne, negatywne, jak i neutralne. Częstotliwości użycia jednostek leksykalnych oraz różnorodność ich aktualizacji świadczą o tym, że koncept СМЕХ zajmuje ważne miejsce w językowym obrazie świata Teffi.
The focus of this research is the concept of Laughter in Russian émigré literature. The particular aim of this article is to analyse this concept in the memoirs of Nadezhda Teffi, one of the writers from the first wave of Russian emigration. The subject of this analysis is the lexis taken from the volumes Memoirs (1933) and My Chronicle (2015). The analysis focuses on distinguishing the semantic structure of the concept of Laughter, and the ways of its linguistic expression in the literary text. During the process of analysis, we refer to the methodology proposed by Josif Sternin which made it possible to distinguish, in the structure of concepts, various mental units of the author’s image of the world as verbalised in literary texts (objective and individual-author meanings and images). Moreover, this study uses a descriptive method and a functional and stylistic analysis. Based on the linguistic analysis carried out, we conclude that the concept of Laughter is widely represented in Teffi’s memoirs. The individual-author’s meanings representing the periphery of the concept analysed have a different connotation. The feelings and emotions expressed through laughter in the depicted world are positive, negative and neutral. The frequency of use of the lexical units, and the variety of their updating, prove that the concept of Laughter has an important place in Teffi’s linguistic worldview.
