    We sometimes hear opinions that sign language is not a real or a natural language like English or Polish. In this paper, the views that sign language is not a real or a natural language are considered to be mistaken. The aim of this article, therefore, is to provide evidence in support of the thesis that sign language is as real and as natural a language as spoken languages, such as English or Polish.

    Opis:
    The aim of this paper is to provide an exemplification of selected, consonantal features of Polish-accented English on the basis of a biographical interview conducted with a prominent Polish politician, Donald Tusk. Typical examples of Polish-accented English, such as final obstruent devoicing, plosive insertion after /ŋ/, lack of linking /r/ or various sound substitutions, are presented in the paper. The paper finishes with concluding remarks which briefly recapitulate its main points and suggest further analyses within the field of Polish-accented English.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest egzemplifikacja wybranych, spółgłoskowych cech polskiej angielszczyzny zebranych na podstawie wywiadu przeprowadzonego z czołowym polskim politykiem – Donaldem Tuskiem. W artykule przedstawiono takie cechy polskiej angielszczyzny jak np. ubezdźwięcznianie końcowych spółgłosek, wymawianie spółgłosek zwartych miękkopodniebiennych po /ŋ/, brak /r/ łączącego czy zastąpienia angielskich dźwięków dźwiękami polskimi. Artykuł zamykają uwagi końcowe podsumowujące jego treść oraz podające propozycje dalszych badań w obrębie polskiej angielszczyzny.

    The paper looks at the phenomenon of linking /r/ in RP and aims to find out what Polish phoneticians say the realization of linking /r/ in RP is on the basis of their books. During the inspection of the material it has transpired that it is not easy to find what the phonetic value of linking /r/ is. This is largely due to the inconsistencies among the scholars, some of whom say that it is the alveolar tap and some that it is the post-alveolar approximant that is the usual variant used for the linking context. The author concludes by recommending further research in this field.

    This special issue of Lublin Studies in Modern Languages and Literature entitled “The /r/ sound in language” is a collection of papers tied together not only by their shared theme, but also by the fact that their authors were the participants of the conference on the /r/ sound in language, held on May 27th, 2017 at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland. The conference was organized by the Division of Applied Linguistics MCSU and included a wide variety of presentations not only from the fields of phonetics and phonology, but also from other areas such as speech-language pathology or philosophy of language. The conference featured keynote addresses delivered by distinguished guests: Anna Bloch-Rozmej, Bożydar Kaczmarek, Jolanta Szpyra-Kozłowska and Tomasz Woźniak. It was a truly interdisciplinary meeting which brought closer together not only scholars but also languages that were discussed: English, Polish, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Irish and Danish.
