Opis:
Purpose: Otosclerosis is a metabolic bone disease of the otic capsule that can cause the stapes fixation, resulting in conductive hearing loss or, in a profound sensorineural deafness threshold. Surgery is one of the possible treatments for the otosclerosis. To repair small focus of otosclerosis in the anterior crus of the stapes, in 1960, Hough suggested the implementation of a technique in which part of the anterior crus is fractured and the stapes turned. As a result, the posterior crus of the stapes is the only connection with the inner ear. In this work, the outcome of Hough’s surgical technique was simulated. Methods: Based on computerized images, a finite element model of middle ear ossicles and tympanic membrane was created, as well as a model where the stapes has changed. The discretization of the tridimensional solid model was made using the ABAQUS software. The mechanical properties used were taken from the literature and adequate boundary conditions were applied. Results: The results obtained with the Hough technique simulation were compared with a representative model of the normal ear, taking into account the displacements obtained on the central part of the stapes footplate and the maximum principal stress in the stapes crus. Conclusions: The results obtained are closer to the normal ear model, therefore Hough technique stands out as a good option to correct small focus of otosclerosis.

Objective: To establish reference charts for fetal biometric parameters in a non-selected risk population from Uberaba, Southeast of Brazil. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed among 5656 non-selected risk singleton pregnant women between 14 and 41 weeks of gestation. The ultrasound exams were performed during routine visits of second and third trimesters. Biparietal diameter (BPD) was measured at the level of the thalami and cavum septi pellucidi. Head circumference (HC) was calculated by the following formula: HC = 1.62*(BPD + occipital frontal diameter, OFD). Abdominal circumference (AC) was measured using the following formula: AC = (anteroposterior diameter + transverse abdominal diameter) × 1.57. Femur diaphysis length (FDL) was obtained in the longest axis of femur without including the distal femoral epiphysis. The estimated fetal weight (EFW) was obtained by the Hadlock formula. Polynomial regressions were performed to obtain the best-fit model for each fetal biometric parameter as the function of gestational age (GA). Results: The mean, standard deviations (SD), minimum and maximum of BPD (cm), HC (cm), AC (cm), FDL (cm) and EFW (g) were 6.9 ± 1.9 (2.3 – 10.5), 24.51 ± 6.61 (9.1 – 36.4), 22.8 ± 7.3 (7.5 – 41.1), 4.9 ± 1.6 (1.2 – 8.1) and 1365 ± 1019 (103 – 4777), respectively. Second-degree polynomial regressions between the evaluated parameters and GA resulted in the following formulas: BPD = –4.044 + 0.540 × GA – 0.0049 × GA² (R² = 0.97); HC= –15.420 + 2.024 GA – 0.0199 × GA² (R² = 0.98); AC = –9.579 + 1.329 × GA – 0.0055 × GA² (R² = 0.97); FDL = –3.778 + 0.416 × GA – 0.0035 × GA² (R² = 0.98) and EFW = 916 – 123 × GA + 4.70 × GA² (R² = 0.96); respectively. Conclusion: Reference charts for the fetal biometric parameters in a non-selected risk population from Uberaba, Southeast of Brazil, were established.
Rozmiar płodu oraz trajektorie jego rozwoju są waż- nymi wskaźnikami zdrowia płodu, a najważniejszym standardem jest prenatalne badanie ultrasonograficzne. Zaburzenia rozwoju płodu zazwyczaj identyfikuje się na podstawie rozbieżności pomiędzy faktycznymi a oczekiwanymi miarami biometrycznymi dla określonego wieku ciążowego(1). Rutynowe badanie USG, bez opcji dopplerowskiej, w 3. trymestrze zwiększa stopień wykrywalności zarodków ma- łych jak na wiek ciążowy (small for gestational age, SGA) z 46 do 80% oraz zarodków dużych jak na wiek ciążowy (large for gestational age, LGA) z 36 do 91%, jak udowodniono w badaniach randomizowanych(2). W późnym 3. trymestrze (34.–37. tydzień) USG znacznie zwiększa stopień wykrywalności SGA i LGA (odpowiednio do 75,2% i 63,2%)(3). Krótkoterminowe wyniki płodu SGA i LGA kojarzone są z porażeniem mózgowym, hipoglikemią, hiperbilirubinemią, nadkrwistością lub dystocją(4,5). Wyniki długoterminowe u tych płodów kojarzone są z wysokim ryzykiem ciśnienia tętniczego, cukrzycy i choroby wieńcowej(6). Iron aluminides are iron-aluminum alloys that have excellent resistance to oxidation at high temperatures with low density, high resistance/weight ratio and a low manufacturing cost. Due to its characteristics, these alloys are presented as an option to replace stainless steels in certain applications. This works intends report the casting process and subsequent analyses involving microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of two Fe-Al-C alloys (Fe-11wt%Al and Fe-25wt%Al, containing 0.31-0.37%C), which were prepared in an induction furnace and poured in a permanent mold. Samples of these alloys were characterized and presented elevated hardness values of 37 HRC (alloy Fe-11wt%Al) and 49.6HRC (alloy Fe-25wt%Al) and microstructure with aluminides type Fe3Al and FeAl and also carbides type K. The Fe-11wt%Al alloy exhibited superior resistance to uniform corrosion, although both Fe-Al-C alloys exhibited significantly higher corrosion rates compared to a binary iron aluminide in 0.5M H2SO4 containing naturally dissolved oxygen.

For a single GaAs/AlAs/GaAs type II pseudodirect double quantum well, as well as for superlattices it was predicted that the oscillator strength of the lowest optical transition has a periodic dependence on the number of AlAs monolayers. The oscillator strength depends on the coupling between theΓ and X electron states. We use samples containing a single GaAs/AlAs/GaAs double quantum well with thickness gradient to show experimental evidence of this effect. The results concerning theΓ-X coupling are obtained from the study of the ratio of photoluminescence intensities of the zero-phonon line and the phonon replica and from their time decay. They show the monolayer dependence of the Γ-X mixing potential. We extend the model describing the Γ-X coupling for ideal interfaces in the frame of the envelope approximation to the case of non-abrupt interfaces and exciton localization. The amplitude of variation of the radiative recombination time due to the Γ-X mixing is well reproduced within this model.

Pure and Ni (2 at.%) doped cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles have been synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method at room temperature. Effect of Ni doping on CdS compound semiconductors has been analyzed using X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman and optical absorption studies. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the structure of the obtained nanoparticles to be single-phase zinc blende with the diffractions from (111), (220) and (311) planes. Energy dispersive spectroscopy study confirmed the presence of Ni in the CdS lattice. The average particle size obtained from the transmission electron microscopy studies are in agreement with the crystallite size calculated from X-ray diffraction data. The optical studies exhibited a clear red shift of absorption edge as a function of Ni doping.

This paper presents an overview of scanning-gate microscopy applied to the imaging of electron transport through buried semiconductor nanostructures. After a brief description of the technique and of its possible artifacts, we give a summary of some of its most instructive achievements found in the literature and we present an updated review of our own research. It focuses on the imaging of GaInAs-based quantum rings both in the low magnetic field Aharonov-Bohm regime and in the high-field quantum Hall regime. In all of the given examples, we emphasize how a local-probe approach is able to shed new, or complementary, light on transport phenomena which are usually studied by means of macroscopic conductance measurements.

Gamma-ray tomography experiments have been carried out to detect spatial patterns in the porosity, in a 0.27 m diameter packed steel column using a first generation computed tomography (CT) system. The CT scanner consists of a NaI(Tl) detector 5.08 cm in diameter, and an encapsulated 137Cs (3.7 GBq) radioactive source, located opposite to the center of the detector. The detector and the source, mounted on a fixed support and the column, can rotated and dislocate by two stepping motors controlled through a microprocessor. Different sizes of stainless steel Raschig rings (12.6, 37.9 and 76 mm) have been examined. The primary objective of this work is to detect spatial patterns and statistical information on porosity variation in packed distillation columns. Horizontal scans, at different vertical positions of the packed bed were made for each size of Raschig rings. Radial porosity variation within the packed bed has been determined. This study has demonstrated that the porosity and its spatial distribution in a metallic packed column can be measured with adequate spatial resolution using the gamma-ray tomography technique. After validation of this first generation CT, the turntable design to rotate and dislocate the 60Co or 137Cs sealed gamma-ray sources and multidetector array for the third generation industrial computed tomography was also developed.
