Opis:
W celu optymalizacji leczenia schizofrenii proponowanych jest wiele rozwiązań. Do jednego z nich należy zastosowanie biodegradowalnych, implantowanych systemów uwalniających leki. W niniejszej pracy badano za pomocą mikroskopii sił atomowych zmiany powierzchni matryc otrzymanych z poli(L-laktydo-koglikolidu) (PLAGA) i rysperydonu przed i po dwóch tygodniach degradacji. Analizowano także wpływ degradacji na zmiany ubytku masy matryc polimerowych. Wyniki wskazują na duże możliwości matryc PLAGA do inkorporowania i pułapkowania rysperydonu. Po dwóch tygodniach stwierdzono stabilność matryc (nie uległy one gwałtownej i niekontrolowanej degradacji). Matryce otrzymane z PLAGA posiadają właściwości powierzchniowe odpowiednie dla zastosowania jako biodegradowalne systemy o kontrolowanym uwalnianiu rysperydonu.
Various solutions are proposed to optimize the therapy of schizophrenia. One of them is the application of biodegradable implantable drug delivery systems. In this work, surface changes of matrices composed of poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLAGA) and risperidone before and after two weeks of degradation were determined by atomic force microscopy. The influence of degradation on weight loss of matrices was also observed. The results suggest that PLAGA matrices present great potential for incorporation and trapping of risperidone. After two weeks of the studies, the matrices were stable and were not subjected to rapid and uncontrolled degradation. PLAGA matrices have surface properties useful for designing of biodegradable system of controlled risperidone release.

The Stajnia Cave is one of the most important archaeological sites due to the finds of the first remains of Neanderthals in Poland, and several tens of thousands of flint artefacts from the Middle Palaeolithic. Based on geological, geochemical, palaeobotanical, palaeozoological, archaeological and isotope analyses, coupled with absolute age determinations (OSL, U-Th and C14), 15 lithostratigraphic layers were distinguished and palaeoenvironmental conditions during the sedimentation of these beds were determined. The cave loams accumulated through weathering, aeolian and fluvial processes. Their age may be correlated with an interval from the Early Glacial to the Late Pleniglacial of the Visulian (Weichselian) Glaciation. Archaeological relics related to the Neanderthals have been discovered in layer D with an absolute age of about 52,000–45,000 years BP and correlated with MIS 3 – the Middle Plenivistulian (Interplenivistulian). Climate oscillations in the Vistulian are reflected by the type of the sediments and their physical-chemical features, allowing determining warmer interstadial and colder stadial periods. Generally, the climate was cold, characteristic of tundra areas with a typical vegetation and fauna, and with the mean temperature of the warmest month not exceeding 12°C. Based on multi-proxy studies it can be concluded that from layer E1 upwards, the climate conditions became progressively drier. At that time, the climate was cold with continental features enhancing tundra domination. This conclusion is confirmed by palaeontological investigations and the record of stable oxygen isotopes in the teeth of reindeer. The studies have also indicated seasonal migration of reindeer on the tundra that surrounded the cave. Probably, short-term slight climate warmings occurred during the Middle Plenivistulian (Interplenivistulian).

Introduction: New opportunities in the labour market, competition in services and globalization have contributed to the increase in load factors in the psychosocial work environment. Availability, readiness to help, work with the sick, the suffering patient – night shifts, overtime, workaholic (as a new form of addiction), and bullying – are becoming more pronounced causes of stress, fatigue and burnout in medicine. Thus, difficult working conditions are largely the cause of unhealthy lifestyles in the medical professions and foster the development of various types of addiction and physical illness. The negative effects of psychosocial factors – in the form of immune disorders, increased incidence of mental and somatic diseases, and metabolic and hormonal disorders – more often cause increase absence through sickness and the shortening of working life. Objective: The main aim of the presented study was to provide results concerning the health state of employees of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences (PUMS), and also to analyze relations between selected psychosocial risks factors and the state of health of PUMS employees. Material and methods: The results of research conducted in 2009–2010 which covered 2,468 employees of the PUMS and the results of studies using an anonymous own questionnaire survey, evaluating exposure to psychosocial factors, which included the 1,096th members of staff of the PUMS. Results: There was a clear effect of psychosocial risk factors for health workers. The greatest burden of these factors was observed among workers with higher education, mostly doctors. This occupational group also worked in several places of work more often than other employees of the university. These workers often complained of chronic fatigue, recurrent respiratory infections, hypertension, sleep disorders, neurotic disorders and depression. The complaints quite often diagnosed were immune disease, allergies, skin diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and disorders of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, which clearly intensified under stress. The clearest negative impact of psychosocial factors on the health of the workers were observed in those a with higher education, employed at several jobs, and complained about poor work organization. Conclusions: 1) It is necessary to implement prevention programs for the staff of the PUMS, aimed at the primary and secondary negative impact of psychosocial factors. 2) Psychological counseling is advisable for employees. 3) It is essential that the issue of voice training, and interpersonal communication techniques to teach and control the schedule of classes, in order to reduce the workload, and encourage physical activity and other forms of relaxation. 4) It is advisable to periodically check on the work conditions and organization of work to help eliminate stressors in the work environment.

Fundament krystaliczny północno-wschodniej Polski występuje na głębokości od około 230 m do kilku km, składa się z presvekofeno-karelskich masywów granitoidowych (mazowiecki, dobrzyński i pomorski), svekofeno-karelskich kompleksów metamorficzno-fałdowych (podlaski, ciechanowski i kaszubski) oraz gotyjskiego kompleksu mazurskiego. Pod względem złożowym najważniejsze znaczenie mają kompleksy strukturalno-tektoniczne występujące do głębokości 1000 m. Są to kompleksy mazurski i podlaski, ciągnące się szerokim pasem wzdłuż północno-wschodniej i wschodniej granicy kraju. Ważne znaczenie metalogeniczne ma strefa kontaktowa kompleksu mazurskiego z kompleksami ciechanowskim, mazowieckim i podlaskim, nazwana mazursko-mohylewską strefą aktywizacji tektoniczno-magmowej. Znajduje się w niej szereg intruzji ze złożami i przejawami mineralizacji kruszcowej. W podłożu krystalicznym północno-wschodniej Polski wydzielono obszary metalogeniczne o regionalnym zasięgu, wśród których występują mniejsze jednostki zwane strefami metalogenicznymi. Wyniki badań geofizycznych posłużyły do tworzenia modelu budowy geologicznej pod kątem koncentracji rud metali, wyznaczenia granic stref metalogenicznych oraz określenia perspektyw złożowych. Pierwotna mineralizacja Fe—Ti—V jest związana z intruzjami zasadowymi, ultrazasodowo-alkalicznymi, metamorficznymi i suprakrustalnymi skałami kompleksu podlaskiego. W skałach zasadowych w intruzji suwalskiej stwierdzono śladowe ilości metali szlachetnych (Ag, Au i Pt), związane z siarczkami i magnetytem. W obrębie mazursko-mohylewskiej strefy aktywizacji tektoniczno-magmowej stwierdzono: w intruzji Tajna — karbonatyty, w strefie Wigier — marmury krzemianowe (kalcyfiry) oraz w intruzji Ełku — skarbonatyzowane skały alkaliczne. Wymienione strefy metalogeniczne zawierają także mineralizację siarczkową i TR (pierwiastki ziem rzadkich). W intruzjach Tajna, Ełku i Sejn stwierdzono także cienkie post-tektoniczne żyłki z przejawami mineralizacji polimetalicznej.
The crystalline basement of northeastern Poland occurs at a depth from about 230 m to several km and consists of Presvekofenno-Karelian granitoid massifs (Mazovian, Dobrzyń, Pomeranian), Svekofenno-Karelian metamorphic-folded zones (Podlasie, Ciechanów, Kaszuby) and Masurian Gothian Complex. Considering ore deposits the most important are Podlasie and Masurian complexes. They are situated along the eastern and northeastern border of Poland. A contact zone between Masurian Complex and Ciechanów, Mazovian and Podlasie complexes called Masurian-Mohylev zone of tectonic-igneous activity is very important. The Masurian-Mohylev zone contains some platform and basic intrusions with ore deposits and traces of mineralization. In the crystalline basement of northeastern Poland great metallogenic areas including smaller metallogenic units called metallogenic zones were distinguished. Geophysical investigations contributed to making of a model of geological structure in regard to ore deposits. Results of geophysical investigations were helpful while defining the boundary of metallogenic zones. Primary minerallization of Fe—Ti—V is connected with basic, ultrabasic-alkaline intrusions, metamorphic and supracrustal rocks, which appear in Podlasie Complex. Traces of the noble metals (Au, Ag, Pt) connected with sulphides and magnetite were detected in the Suwałki intrusion. Within the Masurian-Mohylev zone of tectonic-igneous activity veins of carbonatites (Tajno intrusion), calciphyres (Wigry unit) and carbonatized rocks (Ełk intrusion) occur. All mentioned metallogenic zones contain sulphides mineralization and REE (Rare Earth Elements). In the Sejny and Wigry intrusions, posttectonic veins with traces of polimetalic mineralization occur.

Tills in fluvioglacial cone of Sucha Woda Valley near Toporowa Cyrhla and Niżnia Palenica Pańszczykowa were recognized during mapping Tatra Mountains in scale 1 : 10 000. Tills with big boulders occur outside maximum range of Würm Glaciation end moraines and probably were accumulated by glacier of Riss Glaciation. Grain size composition, petrographical content (grains 5–10 mm) and compositions of heavy minerals (grains 0.1–0.25 mm) were investigated in tills. Dusty and clay fraction prevails (50–70%) above sandy and gravel fraction in these sediments. Gravel of granite without sandstone predominates in samples from Toporowa Cyrhla and gravels of sandstone with granite prevail in deposits of Niżnia Palenica Pańszczykowa. Granite in tills deposits occur in upper part of Sucha Woda Valley near Hala Gąsienicowa. Sandstone occur in middle and lower part of valley. Different petrographical content of samples from Toporowa Cyrhla and Niżnia Palenica Pańszczykowa could indicate various glaciers accumulated tills or various age of investigated sediments. Non-resistant minerals and magnetite prevail among heavy minerals. These investigations suggest glacial origin of these deposits and delimit bigger range of glacial tills by this day.

Introduction. An adequate mode of nutrition is among the most important environmental factors affecting the development of Man and maintenance of a good health status. An improper selection of nutrients and irregular consumption of meals may lead to overweight and obesity. Objective. The characteristics of health behaviours of the examined population of schoolchildren, with consideration of nutrition and body weight disorders. A comparison of the opinions of schoolchildren and their parents concerning health behaviours. Development of guidelines for educational programmes carried out in the place of residence of the population of schoolchildren and their parents. Materials and method. The survey covered a randomised group of schoolchildren attending elementary and secondary schools in the Kalisz Province and province of the city of Kalisz. The study was conducted in May and June 2009, in a randomly selected representative group of 1,100 boys and girls from classes V and VI of elementary schools, and 1,100 secondary school adolescents aged 16–19 and their parents. The studies of schoolchildren attending elementary and secondary schools were compared with the all-Polish studies of junior high school adolescents in the school year 2006–2007. Results. The respondents most often consumed 3–4 meals; however, as many as 26% of junior high school adolescents and 27% of secondary school adolescents admitted that they consume only one meal daily. The schoolchildren show inadequate nutritional habits concerning an insufficient consumption of fruits, vegetables and fish, in favour of high calorific meals and sweet snacks and drinks. Parents improperly assess the body weight of their children and perceive them as slimmer, which is not confirmed by the BMI value for age and gender. Conclusions. Systematic monitoring and analysis of changes in the health behaviours of adolescents should be a basis for planning health education and promotion programmes. Educational programmes concerning various aspects of health should be implemented in an organized and complementary way, directed not only at schools, but also at entire families and local communities. Knowledge, beliefs, skills and attitudes towards health acquired during the period of adolescence decide about life style in adulthood.

Various methods of xenogeneic tissues stabilization have been proposed for the purpose of preparing many tissue-derived biomaterials. One of the most important treatments that may lead to obtaining the good-quality tissue biomaterials seems to be decellularization of such tissues. This process may contribute to the reduction of the most frequent failures resulting from the tissues stabilization. The aim of this work was to determine nanostructure of trypsin-treated bovine pericardium, using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The treatment of bovine pericardium with trypsin in EDTA solution resulted in non significant changes in tissue’s morphology. Demonstrated AFM studies of these tissues revealed no failures on the fibers’ surface in the nanoscale. Thus, our results confirm the expec-tation that decellularization may be considered as one of the most promising methods of the allogeneic and xenogeneic tissues stabilization.

Despite the disadvantages of glutaraldehyde (GA)-stabilization of tissues, it is the method most often used for xenogeneic tissues preparation. Nowadays, partial elimination of drawbacks of this method is achieved by using GA in the mixture with other crosslinking reagents, which completes the stabilization effects and acts synergistically. The aim of this work was to determine microstructure and nanostructure of porcine pericardium stabilized by GA and tannic acid (TA). The microstructure was examined by optical microscopy and the nanostructure by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Different results on the level of micro- and nanostructure were observed. No essential changes in the tissue morphology after crosslinking with GA and TA were observed under optical microscope, but significant morphological differences were revealed in AFM studies.

Introduction. Adequate levels of physical activity throughout an individual’s life ensure an optimal state of health. Only 30% of adolescents and 10% of adults perform sufficient physical activity to facilitate proper physical, psychological/mental and emotional development. Objective. Determining physical activity behaviour in children and adolescents through surveying the opinions of school pupils and parents, in order to lend support for optimised educational programmes designed to promote healthy lifestyle behaviour, as well as establishing consistent answers. Materials and Methods. A randomised survey was conducted on two groups of n=1100 pupil subjects, each attending elementary or secondary school, with the former in Classes 5 and 6, whereas the latter were aged between 16–19 years old; in both instances parents were also included in the survey. All subjects came from the Kalisz District in western-central Poland, and were divided into those living in the city of Kalisz and those in the surrounding rural areas. Results. It was found that 87%, 96% and 89% of elementary, middle and secondary school pupils, respectively, participated in Physical Education (PE) lessons. The numbers of pupils who daily, or almost daily, spent time on a computer, were 52%, 60% and 70%, respectively, for elementary, middle and secondary schools, and likewise 70%, 62% and 48% for watching TV. Conclusions; It is vital that education programmes with a focus on a healthy lifestyle are introduced and targeted at teenagers in order to promote physical activity during the crucial time of the body’s development. The period of maturing into adulthood is particularly crucial for acquiring the right knowledge, convictions, skills and attitudes that help shape a pro-healthy lifestyle in later years.

Opis:
The production of rapeseed oil requires a lot of energy. Before being pressed, seeds are conditioned, i.e. heated up to the process temperature for the whole mass. Then, as a result of pressing the extracted oil has a higher temperature compared to the ambient temperature. The objective of the study was to assess the application of heat pumps to reduce the energy consumption of the vegetable oil production process. The article analyses the results of the industrial experiment in which a heat pump was employed to cool down oil and heat up rapeseeds before pressing. As part of B+R project No INNOTECHK2/IN2/5/181835/NCBR/13, a prototype system was constructed with a capacity of 1.5 Mg of oil per hour. The research shows that the return on investment in the heat pump is maximum 2 months. Profit from heating seeds with heat obtained from oil cooling is about PLN 760,000 per annum in the analysed case.
Produkcja oleju rzepakowego wymaga dużych nakładów energii. Przed tłoczeniem nasiona są poddawane kondycjonowaniu, czyli podgrzewaniu w całej masie do temperatury procesowej. Następnie na skutek tłoczenia pozyskiwany jest olej o temperaturze wyższej niż temperatura otoczenia. Celem badań była ocena zastosowania pompy ciepła do obniżenia energochłonności procesu produkcji oleju roślinnego. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki doświadczenia wykonane w skali przemysłowej, gdzie zastosowano pompę ciepła do jednoczesnego schładzania oleju i grzania nasion rzepaku przed tłoczeniem. W ramach realizacji projektu B+R nr umowy INNOTECH-K2/IN2/5/181835/NCBR/13 zbudowano instalację prototypową o wydajności 1,5 Mg oleju na godzinę. Z wykonanych badań wynika, że zwrot inwestycji w pompę ciepła to okres nie dłuższy niż 2 miesiące. Zysk z podgrzewania nasion ciepłem pozyskanym ze schładzania oleju to około 760 tys. PLN rocznie w badanym przypadku.

A new borehole in Rożce (SW Mazovian Lowland) drilled in 2012, combined with a wide variety of research methods (palaeomagnetism, palynological analysis, studies of plant macroremains and textural features of deposits) shed new light on the age and stratigraphic position of the Early Pleistocene deposits, formerly assigned as the Lower Pleistocene. The study focuses on the deposits from 50.7-104.0 m depth, between glacial till of the Nidanian Glaciation (ca. 0.9 Ma) and the Poznań Clays (ca. 5.322 Ma). The deposits situated directly underneath the till (50.7-60.2 m) are related to the Nidanian Glaciation and show a reversed polarity and correlate with the end of the Matuyama Epoch. The deposits from 60.2-104.0 m depth were accumulated during the Early Pliocene, i.e. approximately 5.332-4.6 million years ago. They appear to correlate with the middle part of the Gilbert Palaeomagnetic Epoch and thus they are considerably older than previously thought. The cored section indicates a stratigraphic gap of about 3.5 Ma from the Lower Pliocene to the first advance of the Scandinavian ice sheets into Poland, which are thought to have occurred in the early Middle Pleistocene. The analysed deposits accumulated under variable climatic conditions showing two periods with significant aridity alternated with two periods of increased humidity. Deposits of the arid periods contain no pollen, butaeolian sand quartz grains are found. During periods of more humid climate the area was covered by various types of mixed forest.
