Opis:
One of the ways to reduce the water consumption by plants while maintaining their proper quality is to use substances that limit excessive transpiration. Three preparations at following concentrations: Moisturin (10%), Root-Zone (4.5%) and Vapor Gard (1%), were used in the experiment. Moisturin and Vapor Gard were applied in the form of a single spray, and Root-Zone as a single irrigation in mid July. The aim of the research was to assess the effect of several anti-transpirants on some biometric features of the ‘Tardiva’ panicled hydrangea depending on the frequency of irrigation. The following parameters were measured: area, perimeter, width and length of leaf blade, length and width of inflorescences, and the diameter of shoots. Treatment of H. paniculata cv. ‘Tardiva’ with Root-Zone and Moisturin anti-transpirants with a single irrigation every other day allows to reduce the water consumption and obtain shrubs of a quality comparable with plants irrigated twice a day. The use of Moisturin with a twice daily irrigation positively affected the length and width of inflorescences.

Opis:
Three-year studies (2014–2016) were conducted in Lublin in the south-east Poland. The objects of research were the plants of ten canna cultivars: ‘Aida’, ‘America’, ‘Botanica’, ‘Cherry Red’, ‘La Boheme’, ‘Lucifer’, ‘Picasso’, ‘Robert Kemp’, ‘President’ and ‘Wyoming’. Observations were carried out each year in October. Plants with symptoms of stem and root rot, leaves yellowing and wilt were noticed on the investigated plantations. The plants were studied with regard to photosynthetic activity and also by disease index for all cultivars and statistical analysis was carried out upon them. The effect of disease index on photosynthetic intensity and transpiration was determined after the calculation of Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Infected plants were collected for mycological analysis. The results of mycological analysis showed that canna plants were colonized by Fusarium spp., Sclerotinia spp. and Alternaria spp. Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium avenaceum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum predominated among pathogenic species. The best health status and the lowest number of colonies were noticed for plants of cv. ‘Botanica’. The infection of canna leaves by pathogenic fungi has negatively affected the intensity of photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance and sub-stomatal CO2 concentration and it was largely related to the degree of infestation of specified varieties of canna. The photosynthesis process was limited especially in ‘La Boheme’, ‘Picasso’, ‘Cherry Red’ and ‘President’ cultivars, which were infected most frequently by pathogenic fungi. It was confirmed by negative Pearson’s coefficient.

Opis:
The experiment studied the effect of various mulching terms of ‘Foxtrot’ tulips with wheat straw in combination with spraying of plantations with herbicides using various doses and different amounts of working liquid. The mulch was laid out just after planting and after the soil had frozen. The experiment included combinations, in which the mulch was left until the end of the growing season or removed in spring. Spraying with single (linuron 675 g·ha–1 + lenacyl 1000 g·ha–1) or double herbicide dose (linuron 1350 g·ha–1 + lenacyl 2000 g·ha–1) was made before covering the soil with mulch and also on mulch – two weeks after planting the bulbs, or in the spring after thawing the soil. Volumes of 300 dm3 and 600 dm3 of working liquid were used for spraying. Tulips covered with mulch bloomed 2–3 days later and formed longer shoots as compared to non-mulched ones. The highest yield of marketable bulbs and the first-selection ones was obtained from tulips mulched immediately after planting and sprayed 2 weeks later with herbicides used in a single dose of 600 dm3 of a working liquid. Mulching of tulips after soil freezing and removal of mulch in spring adversely affects the number and weight of commercial bulbs. The lowest yield was obtained in combinations, in which the mulch was not used. The use of additional nitrogen fertilization before laying out the mulch did not affect the yield of tulips. Herbicides can be used both before mulching and after covering the plantation with mulch. It is not necessary to increase the dose of the agent and the amount of water.

Opis:
Striving to intensify horticultural production, new and more effective bio-preparations are being sought to stimulate plant growth and development. Bio-algeen S90 is a natural agent based on sea algae, the high biological activity of which results from the high content of natural growth regulators. The aim of the study was to verify the influence of Bio-algeen S90 on the growth, morphological characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence of Rosa multiflora seedlings. The bio-preparation was applied one, two and three times at concentrations: 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 mg.dm−3. Following parameters were measured to evaluate the response of plants to the bio-preparation: F0 – initial fluorescence, Fm – maximal fluorescence in the dark-adapted state, Fv/Fm – maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII. All concentrations of the bio-preparation and frequency of its application stimulated the number of shoots in a bush, the length of shoots and the diameter of the root crown of plants intended for budding. The most beneficial was the two-fold bio-preparation application at a concentration of 0.4 mg.dm–3. Bio-algeen also positively influenced the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The highest mean F0 and Fm values were recorded with the two-fold preparation treatment. There was no significant effect of the bio-preparation on the Fv/Fm index, which was within the range of 0.75–0.66.

Opis:
Mandevilla sanderi is an important commercial ornamental pot plant. Traditional vegetative propagation is limited due to the low rate, therefore there is a need to develop an alternative, more efficient method. There is an interest in development of micropropagation technology for the species, as it allows to obtain a lot of offsprings in a relatively short time. The aim of the present work was to estimate an influence of explants type and position on regeneration of Mandevilla sanderi in tissue culture. Four different types of explants (leafy shoot tips, decapitated leafy shoot tips, defoliated shoot tips, decapitated and defoliated shoot tips) were used in the experiment, which were placed on the media vertically, while defoliated shoot tips were placed horizontally or vertically upside down. The explants were cultivated on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1 mg·dm–3 benzyladenine (BA) and 0.5 mg·dm–3 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). It was noted that both explants orientation and positioning, influenced the multiplication rate. Defoliated shoot tips placed horizontally were characterized by higher multiplication rate (6.8) in comparison to upside down vertical positioning (3.2). It was also observed that removal of shoot apex improved axillary branching, while defoliation of shoots placed in a normal position reduced multiplication rate.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to evaluate the influence of cytokinins on in vitro propagated dahlia and their consequent effect on acclimatization. Plant material consisted of shoot tips and nodes. Among the three cytokinins, benzyladenine, kinetin and 2-isopentenyl-adenine, only BA effectively stimulated the shoot multiplication from axiliary buds. The highest multiplication rate was obtained from nodes in the presence of 0.25– 0.5 mg·dm–3 BA. Higher concentrations shortened the internodes and decreased the leaf blades and growth of callus. 1 mg·dm–3 of KIN and 2iP positively influenced the shoot growth and size of leaves. Gibberellic acid (GA3) used with BA increased the number of auxillary shoots. The best quality shoots and the highest multiplication rate were obtained when 2 mg·dm–3 BA was used with 5 mg·dm–3 GA3. Cytokinins affected the rooting and acclimatization ex vitro. Dahlia shoots multiplicated in the presence of 1 mg·dm–3 KIN or 2iP rooted faster in the soil and 100% survived in field, while those from 1 mg·dm–3 BA media rooted slowly, had shorter shoots and only 60% of them survived. Plants bloomed after 11–12 weeks in the field. Dahlia plants that had been multiplicated in the presence of KIN had larger diameter and fresh weight in the field. BA and 2iP positively influenced the flower diameter, length of flower stalk and a number of the first-order shoots.

Opis:
The research material consisted of tulip plants of ‘Leen van der Mark’ cv. The effect of two preparations was evaluated: Sunspray 850 EC and Sunspray Ultra-Fine, in which the active substance is refined paraffinbased mineral oil. Preparations were applied at three concentrations: 1, 1.5, and 2%. Research plots were sprayed three times every 7 days. The first treatment was performed at the turn of the second and third decade of April. Starting from the beginning of May, observations of plant colonization by aphids were conducted every 14 days. The observations were terminated at the end of June. It was found that spraying using mineral oils Sunspray 850 EC and Sunspray Ultra-Fine of tulip ‘Leen van der Mark’ significantly affect the degree of virus infection and infection due to disease-causing pathogens in relation to the untreated plants. Plants sprayed with mineral oil at the lowest concentration (1%) were in better health condition and were less attractive to aphids. Increasing the concentration of oil and the number of treatments intensified the phytotoxic reaction of tulips manifested as chlorosis with varying intensity. They were not, however, apparent effect on plant growth and development. The chlorophyll content (expressed as greenness index) in the tulip leaves treated with mineral oil was lower as compared to untreated leaves, when plants were sprayed three times using Sunspray Ultra-Fine oil at a concentration of 2%.

Identification of cultivars is essential both in breeding and to settle cultivar disputes. The purpose of the study has been to examine cultivar identities based on absorption spectra of plant pigments and to confirm a genetic stability with SCoT and RAPD molecular markers in new Polish lines of Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Spectral analysis of pigments extracted from plant inflorescences in quinoa gives an opportunity to confirm the cultivar identity and identification of ‘Faro’ and ‘Titicaca’ cultivars and their new lines. Spectral analysis is an effective method of confirming cultivar identity and it should be used in practice for the identification of cultivars or cultivars lines in Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Analysis of molecular markers indicated by RAPD as well as SCoT technique revealed a high genetic stability of the derivative lines of ‘Faro’ and ‘Titicaca’, while variation was detected in plants representing original cultivars: banding pattern different than predominant was present in three plants of ‘Titicaca’ (genetic distnaces from 7.5% to 55.9%) and in a single plant of ‘Faro’(genetic distance 61.2% as indicated by SCoT technique).

The experiment assess the effectiveness of two mineral oils: Sunspray 850 EC (85% mineral oil) and Sunspray Ultra-Fine (98.8% mineral oil) on tulip ‘Leen van der Mark’ fields. Tulip plants were sprayed once a week for three weeks. Mineral oils were applied at concentrations of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%. The oil preparations did not negatively affect the length of flower shoot and tepals of tulips grown in field. No phytotoxic symptoms were observed on leaves, however their color was altered. In all combinations protected using oils, the number of plants with virus symptoms on petals was lower than for control. No decrease in the commercial and the first choice bulb yields due to the mineral oils application were recorded. Mineral oils applied at concentration up to 2.0% had no negative contribution on the quality of produced tulip flowers. Despite of the selection made in the field, from 60 to 73% plants showed virus symptoms in control combination during plant forcing. Efficiency of oils in reducing the spread of viruses depended on the year of study and oil type. The best effects were achieved using Sunspray 850 EC at 1.5% concentration (26% virus-infected plants). The oil preparations, despite of high efficiency in reducing the virus spread, did not guarantee a full protection in the field in any year of study.

Opis:
In modern greenhouse cultivations using the shoot bending method, the architecture of rose shrub is obtained by bending of primary stem, forming and suitable cutting of flower shoots and simultaneously bending of low-valuable stems. The studies performed in 2010–2012 indicated that the bending of stems of rose cv. ‘Red House’ increase the sprouting of high quality flower shoots, and parameters of cut flower cultivated with both in traditional and shoot bending method were similar. The used rootstock has significant effect on quantity and quality of yield in unheated foil tunnel. The shrubs budded on R. multiflora are characterized by higher yielding in comparison to R. canina Schmid’s Ideal.

Opis:
Salvia farinacea Benth. 'Blue Victory' was cultivated from seedlings and by sowing of seeds directly into the ground. Four sowing terms: March 15th-16th and 29th- 30th in a greenhouse (cultivation from seedlings) and April 20th-22nd and May 12th-14th (direct seeding to the ground) and three types of plant density: 16, 12 and 8 plants per m2, were used. It was concluded that cultivation from seedlings was more beneficial than direct sowing because the plants start flowering earlier, are higher by approx. 20% and produce longer inflorescence stems and inflorescences. Both ways of cultivation ensures obtaining of flowering plants until the end of September. However, delay of sowing causes lower quality of plant evaluated by the number and length of inflorescence shoots, height and diameter of plants and fresh weight of the aboveground part. Cultivation density does not affect morphological traits and plants meets the requirements for flowerbed plant in all studied combinations.
Szałwię omączoną (Salvia farinacea Benth.) 'Blue Victory' uprawiano z rozsady i siewu nasion bezpośrednio do gruntu. Oba sposoby uprawy zapewniają uzyskanie kwitnących roślin do końca września, jednak opóźnienie siewu nasion powoduje obniżenie jakości roślin ocenianej liczbą i długością pędów kwiatostanowych, wysokością i średnicą roślin oraz świeżą masą części nadziemnej. Gęstość uprawy nie ma wpływu na cechy morfologiczne, a rośliny spełniają wymagania rośliny rabatowej we wszystkich badanych kombinacjach.
