Opis:
The problem of significantly reduced drug use concerns particularly the infections caused by multi-resistant pathogens, especially Gram-negative bacteria. In this regard, interest is increasing in the known for nearly 50 years, but now frequently forgotten antibiotic – fosfomycin. Fosfomycin possesses high effectiveness for multidrug-resistant bacteria, comprising of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL), Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPC); commonly, the pandrug-resistant (PDR) and the extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains, especially from Enterobacteriaceae family. Because of facilitated distribution into inflamed tissues and a very broad range of in vitro bactericidal activity, fosfomycin may have various applications in the treatment of many kinds of bacterial infections, including acute uncomplicated infections of the urinary bladder or complicated urinary tract infections, urinary tract sepsis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis and chronic lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis, the great majority caused by multi-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, and in the therapy eradicating multidrug-resistant Helicobacter pylori. Fosfomycin may limit the toxicity of other antibiotics and play a protective role in the process of bacterial resistance development during the therapy. Combinations of different antimicrobials enable the use of forgotten antibiotics in commonly occurring infections, although they are still completely incurable.

Opis:
Quantitative determination of polysaccharides in Ganoderma lucidum fruit bodies from different sawdust cultivation substrates and their antibacterial activity was done. Thirty six samples were analyzed. Four strains of Ganoderma lucidum (GL01, GL02, GL03 and GL04) were cultivated on the growth substrates of three different sawdust types: birch (Bo), maple (Kl) or alder (Ol) amended with wheat bran in three different concentrations: 10, 20 and 30% (w/w). Even though the richest in polysaccharides was GL01 strain, the highest yields of the polysaccharides were determined in GL04Kl3 sample and was 112.82 mg/g of dry weight. The antibacterial activity of polysaccharides was determined in vitro using micro-dilution broth method. The panel of eight reference bacterial strains was used. All the polysaccharide samples tested showed the broad spectrum and the moderate antibacterial activity. Micrococcus luteus ATCC 10240 strain was the most sensitive with MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) = 0.63 − 1.25 mg/mL.

Opis:
Objectives. The present study sought to identify firefighters’ rated physical demands for the most frequently occurring work tasks and to determine if the ratings differed between full-time and part-time firefighters to help create a basis for the development of physical employment tests for firefighters. Methods. An extensive questionnaire was completed by 125 and 68 firefighters in 2000 and 2010, respectively. The data were analysed with the Mann–Whitney U test and binominal test and ranked on the basis of the responses in each category. Results. Significant differences were seen between the full- and part-time firefighters. The work tasks rated as the most physically strenuous in terms of aerobic fitness, muscle strength, work posture and body control by most respondents were smoke diving upstairs (carrying a hose), victim rescue in different ways, carrying a stretcher over terrain and pulling a hose. Conclusions. Physically strenuous work tasks should be included in the end-point performance variables used to select physical performance tests for firefighters. The part-time firefighters with no experience in several of the work tasks suggests that work-related exercises are important if both groups of firefighters are expected to do similar work.

Opis:
Spring development in the hydrolittoral zone was investigated at five wave-sheltered and five wave-exposed sites on four occasions from late March to late May (every third week). The number of species was higher at the sheltered locations and increased significantly over time. The difference in community structure was significant: over 95% of the Bray-Curtis dissimilarities were due to the biomass of only eleven taxa, and the total Bray-Curtis dissimilarity between exposed and sheltered sites was 75%. Macroalgae made up 70–80% of the total biomass and was dominated by filamentous species. In contrast to previous studies, macroalgal biomass was higher at the exposed sites, which may be due to the fact that this was a spring study, unlike previous studies, which were conducted during summer.
